SCHOOL NURSING PROGRAM

There has been a change of date for the school nurse visit. The School Nurse will visit Prep children next week on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd June (not the following Monday and Tuesday as previously stated).

STUDENT ABSENCE AND EARLY PICK-UP PROCEDURE

Student Absence If your child is absent from school for whatever reason, this must be communicated to the school by 10:00am that day. Please either call the school office or send through an Absentee Form via Skoolbag App. If you email your child’s class teacher, please CC Vanessa or Kathy in the office. Students arriving late will need to be signed in via the iPad located in the office. Early Pick-Up If your child needs to be picked up early from school, we ask that you let their class teacher know beforehand as a courtesy. Please sign your child out via the iPad and a staff member will ring the classroom for your child to come to the office. We understand that some early pick-ups are arranged last minute and so there might not be a chance to notify the teacher in advance. In these cases, please contact the school office as soon as practicable.

JAR COLLECTION FOR FAMILY FUN FAIR

We are still collecting jars for our Jam and Preserve Stall at the School Fair. There is a collection box in the office for all jars. Please make sure they are clean with labels removed. Thank you to everyone who has dropped off jars.

SCHOOL ENHANCEMENT SESSIONS

All our families are encouraged to participate in our Enhancement Sessions as they are a terrific way to not only assist our school but also network and make connections with other families. The school enhancement fee of $200 will be discounted if two or more sessions are attended. If you intend on attending our Enhancement Sessions, you may exclude the $200 fee from your annual school fee and levy total. Naturally, if by the end of the year you have not attended the working bee session/s as intended, this will remain on your account. Some families have indicated that they are happy to attend the Enhancement Sessions without claiming the $200 discount. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code MA4ZT to register for a session. Upcoming School Enhancement Sessions in 2017:

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,

Sacrament of Eucharist Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June are the beginning of the First Eucharist celebrations. Thank you to Gail Ryan, Erin Nagel, Ruth and the Year Four teachers who have prepared the students so well. We look forward to sharing this momentous occasion with the children and their families. Our prayers are with the students and their families as they draw closer to receiving Jesus through the pinnacle of Sacraments, the Eucharist.

New Learning Centre The students and teachers have settled in well in the new learning centre. Although it has taken some time to ensure the facilities are fully complete, the students and teachers have been patient and embraced new ways of working. The 1/2 and 3/4 classes have worked together on Eucharist preparation and prayer time. We look forward to experiencing even greater collaboration as the years roll on. Please encourage your child to think of a name for our new building. A formal Opening and Blessing will take place in October when the Archbishop is available.

Liturgical Sculpture We are very excited to have commissioned a beautiful religious sculpture to complete Stage 1 of the Masterplan. This religious piece is the most important aspect of our build as it tangibly demonstrates to everyone who we are and what we stand for as a Catholic school. To see works completed by Orchard Design, please visit www.orcharddesign.com.au. As part of this building project we are seeking donations to the School Building Fund. These donations will free up funds which will allow us to pay for the liturgical sculpture. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. All families and parishioners who make a donation will have their name etched on a plaque to commemorate your generosity and support of St Michael’s Parish School.

New and Sibling Enrolments for 2018 Just a reminder to any families who may be enrolling for Prep 2018, enrolment forms were due on Friday 12th May 2017. The form is still available at the office and on the school website. Sibling interviews will take place next term.

2018 Enrolments If you are contemplating or have already arranged for your child/children to leave the school at the end of 2017 (Year 6s excepted), please let me know immediately as we have Prep enrolments wishing to attend and I am currently organising places and considering staffing for 2018 and need to know numbers. I understand it seems early but it will really assist me to make a more accurate assessment of the enrolment situation.

School Vision We are delighted to share our new school vision with you, our community;

St Michael’s Parish School: A safe community of animated learners enlightened by faith in God.

This statement encapsulates everything that we believe in and strive for and is for all members of our community; students, staff and parents. To provide you with greater understanding, the theological definition of ‘animated learners’ means that; ‘Catholic Education seeks a deeper type of engagement; that which animates learners- that is when students become fully alive, filled with the Holy Spirit, and inspired into action through the learning process.’ We are all learners; students, staff and parents.

Photos of our Wonderful New Facilities Thank you to Marc Grist who has photographed our new building and spaces. We are extremely grateful. These amazing photos are displayed on our website under Our School > Grounds and Facilities. Marc then worked with the 1/2 level in a STEM activity to enable our students to photograph and learn about marketing.

Family Fun Fair: Sunday 3rd December Presently the Fair committee and I meet once a month. All systems are go for Sunday 3rd December. Please remember to support our school and Fair through the Scout’s raffle. Please purchase the tickets or ask your friends and family to buy the tickets as it is a convenient and supportive way to provide the necessary funds for the Fair whilst also going in the draw for some incredible prizes. Our first gold coin donation Dress Up Day is on Friday 30th June. The theme is ‘Olympic Sport’. The money raised will go towards rides at the Fair. More information can be found on page 14.

School Grant Thank you to Joanna Slykerman who wrote in to Momentum Energy Junior Landcare Powerful Youth Projects Grants 2017 to receive a grant of $1000 and was successful. This grant will go towards the dry river bed. We are so fortunate to have such supportive parents in our community.

New Digital Platforms Over the past couple of months, we have been trialling different types of iPad visitor registration systems in the office. So far we have found the iPad to be a more convenient and efficient alternative to the traditional sign in/out books, particularly for students arriving late or leaving early. If you are a parent helper, you are reminded to sign in at the office before heading to the classroom. Although a familiar face, it is extremely important for the safety of everyone that we have a record of all visitors on the premises. Visitors, including parents and contractors, are required to wear a Visitor lanyard at all times whilst on school grounds. Our Flexibuzz trial is drawing to a close. Thank you to those parents who downloaded the app and have been using the Absentee eForm for their child/ren. Experiencing these new platforms through a trial period is a necessity because it gives us an opportunity to test their efficacies and to determine whether or not they meet the needs of our families. At this stage, we have not made a decision to switch from Skoolbag to Flexibuzz. We have also started looking into the services of CareMonkey which is a secure platform for parents to keep their child/ren’s medical information up to date and to sign permission forms. I will inform families should we go ahead with a CareMonkey trial or commit to any of the aforementioned systems. If you have any queries regarding the communicative devices used at St Michael’s, please do not hesitate to contact Vanessa in the office at [email protected].

Excellence in Professional Practice Last Friday, Erin and I met at Catholic Education Melbourne with our collective members; St Francis Xavier Box Hill, Gennezano College and St Kevin’s Templestowe. Our work is centred around ‘Leading a Process of Collaborative Inquiry to Build a Bridge from Data Collection to Improved Student Learning Outcomes’. The design of this Collective opportunity is based upon Dr Lyn Sharratt’s work on pedagogically focused leadership (click here for a short article that provides an overview of this work) and we have been fortunate to have Lyn come to Australia to work with our leaders at St Michael’s as part of this Collective. We are currently collecting evidence about our performance and development culture. On Monday 19th June, Erin (Maths Leader), Leanne (Literacy Leader), Laurina (Performance & Development Culture Leader) and I will attend a Master class with Lyn Sharratt. Our aspirations are to be a leading school that continually provides excellence in learning and teaching for improved outcomes for our students.

Catholic School Funding Please read the letter from Steve Elder further in the newsletter on page 16, regarding funding for Catholic schools. I am hoping to meet with Kelly O’Dwyer in the next few weeks to discuss the Government’s Gonski 2.0 educational funding plan and the effect that this legislation will have on Catholic schools. DEPUTY’S NEWS

Parent Reading Forums

It was wonderful to see all the parents who attended our Parent Reading Forums on Tuesday and Wednesday. We had a total of 26 new volunteers who are willing to assist in classrooms. I thank Leanne Gibbs our Literacy Leader, the Prep Teachers and Year 1/2 Teachers for all the work they prepared for these sessions. We look forward to seeing more helpers in our classrooms and welcome any offers of assistance. Please forward any Working With Children Check cards and Volunteer Application forms to the office. Also, seeing as we have had a few queries, I would like to clarify that although you are asked to provide a referee list, you will always be notified beforehand should they need to be contacted.

Electives

This Friday is our last electives session for this term. It has been fantastic observing and taking part in these sessions. They offer our students the opportunity to follow a passion, work in multi-aged groups and develop skills from hands on tasks. I congratulate all teachers for their work in preparing these great opportunities for the students and thank the parent volunteers that we have each fortnight who assist the learning. These sessions could not run without the parent support.

First Eucharist Masses Best wishes to all children who are celebrating the Sacrament of First Eucharist this and next weekend. We will have you in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you to all involved for your endless work during the children’s preparation, it really does take a community to prepare for such events.

Mini Vinnies News A letter went home earlier this week calling for assistance at the First Eucharist Masses. If your child would like to help serve morning tea / supper after Mass or assist the choir with singing, please return the form by tomorrow or email me. This is a wonderful opportunity for the members of the Mini Vinnies Team to offer community service and to support the children celebrating the Sacrament.

Feast of the Sacred Heart On Friday 23rd June the whole school will be attending Mass at 10:00am. On this day we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is a time for us to reflect on God’s love for us. A love so great that He gave us Jesus, his only Son. We use the Feast of the Sacred Heart to remember the poor and suffering, as Jesus loves everyone in a most special way. All parents and caregivers are invited to join us at Mass. As a way of helping others, all children are invited to donate canned food that will be passed onto the St Vincent de Paul Society so that they are able to assist local families who are in need. Please send the cans to the classroom with your child. All items are thoroughly appreciated.

STUDENT WELLBEING UPDATE On Tuesday 30th May St Michael's hosted a Caritas Leadership Day to explore what it means to be Stewards of God's Creation. The Year Six students who attended included Adele B, Bailea H, Ella J, Charlotte J, Isabella P, Alex A, Felix, Harrison E, Poojanie N, Jimmy G and Danaan R. They enjoyed working with fifty other Year Six students from St Benedict's, St Dominic's, St Christopher's and Holy Family. It was fabulous to see all students collaborating on a common goal and taking action to make a difference to our World. Thank you to Charlotte, Poojanie and Jimmy who wrote reflections about the day. At our Caritas Leadership Day we had 3 ladies come in from the Caritas foundation to talk to us about the environment. We did activities and listened to them talk about how to save our earth. At the end of the day we each wrote a pledge about caring for the environment. We had pledges saying how people will make an effort to put things in the right bin, saving paper and lots more. The main message they got across was to save our earth because it is the only one we have. Charlotte J It was a surprise that morning when I was told I was going to a leadership day in the hub, I learnt so much about how we can be sustainable and about the little things we can do to contribute to helping this world. I know my family have now started using recyclable bags. Everyone there was so polite and friendly. I am definitely hoping for more opportunities like this. Jimmy G On the leadership day, all of us really learnt a lot about our world and what we can do to prevent this world of ours from all the bad things like pollution, deforestation, and climate change. We learnt that things like climate change badly affects the third world countries. This is bad because the third world countries don’t have much and if the little amount they have is destroyed the population numbers will slowly die down. This is not good so we all have to do our part to help our world. Poojanie N Jo Mannix Student Wellbeing Leader & Student Services / Prep LJ Teacher [email protected]

PE UPDATE

Junior Hoop Time On Friday 2nd June four teams from St Michael’s travelled to Nunawading Stadium to compete in the Glen Iris District Junior Hoop Time event. It was a great day where all students had the opportunity to showcase their fantastic basketball skills. All competed with passion and enthusiasm and there were a number of very close games. The B Girls team deserve a special mention, making it through to the grand final where they were victorious. Thank you to Mandy S, Helen M, the Sport Leaders and parents for helping support students on the day.

Division Cross Country

On Thursday the eighth of June, Will N, Amelie M, Abbey V, Alex A, Mia K and Emily G competed in the Boroondara Division Cross Country. These six students all came in the top ten at the Glen Iris District competition in May, then went on to compete at Ruffy Park Lake in Doncaster. Will ran 2km, and came 16th. An incredible effort for his first time! Abbey and Amelie ran 3km, and did a great job. Abbey came a fantastic fourth, and will soon be competing in the Regional competition. Amelie had a great run, and came 36th. Alex came 18th in his 3km run, and had an amazing finish! Mia and I also ran 3km. Mia came 18th as well, and I came 23rd! The course was very hilly, and tough, and everyone did an amazing job. It was a great day! Emily G (5/6 L)

LIBRARY NEWS

Student Outcome, Curriculum, Assessment, Reporting, Principles, and Pedagogy

The 3/4s shared their learning about the Passover meal with their 1/2 buddies yesterday. They all brought food to share and retold stories and discussed their links with the Eucharist meal Jesus had with his disciples.

All library books need to be returned by tomorrow. There is no borrowing over these school holidays and most classes have had their last library session.

We have had a great term in the library and a big thank you to 3/4 GK for sharing the space so generously. Next term the library will be very busy with classes having the use of the whole space and for slightly longer sessions. Also, we will be celebrating Book Week in August with this year’s theme being “Escape to Everywhere”. There is so much to look forward to next term!

If you still have books our on loan, please return them to you classroom teacher ASAP. Thank you for your continued support in maintaining our fantastic library collection.

Government funding cuts to students with disability Today, over 10,000 students with disability are educated in Catholic schools across Victoria.

Government funding support is critical for our schools to meet the individual needs of these. In 2011, the Gonski Review recognised this when it recommended that students with disability be funded through a loading that should be matched to the needs of each individual student. Until this measure could be established, the Gonski Panel recommended that all students with disability were funded at the same rate.

While all students with disability receive the same loading from the Australian Government, within Catholic education, we differentiate the funding support provided to students based on our own assessment of each student’s needs. This system is considered to work well.

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) trial was established to come up with a standardised definition of students with disability that could be used to compare spending and support in all states and territories.

The collection relies on surveys filled out by school principals and teachers, not assessment by medical professionals.

Under the NCCD there has been a significant increase in the number of students considered to have a disability. Initial analysis of the NCCD showed that some schools were over estimating the needs of some students with disability. In addition, as students are only counted in the NCCD if they are receiving an ‘adjustment’ for a disability, it appears this is favouring the wealthier schools which can afford to make individual adjustments to meet all the needs of their students.

School leaders and disability support groups, including Autism Support Australia, have said that the data is unreliable. Even the Education Minister said in December that the NCCD was flawed and that ‘This data … hasn't come to a credible landing point just yet.’

So, why is this important?

On 2 May, the Turnbull Government announced that it will use NCCD from next year to determine how students with disability will be funded by the Australian Government.

This might have been all right, if the total amount of federal funding available to students with disability was to grow, but this will not be the case for Catholic education.

Under the Government’s proposal, more students will be classified as having a disability but, in most cases, they will attract less funding to Catholic education.

This means that most students who are currently funded for their disability will receive less money from the government.

Based on the current data, the total funding provided to Catholic school students with disability will be 17% lower over the next 10 years.

It beggars belief that some of the nation’s students who are in most need of funding support are going to be disadvantaged because of the Turnbull Government’s decision to use a funding calculation for students with disability which its own Education Minister says is not credible.
