Germantown Presbyterian Church is pleased to announce Jay Howell as the new Associate Pastor.
After dozens of resumes were reviewed by the Associate Pastor Nomination Committee, it was decided that Jay would be a great fit for the GPC family.
In June, after much prayer, the committee extended an offer to Jay Howell and he accepted!
All of the members of the commit-tee are very excited about Jay. They feel that he will quickly become a tremendous spiritual leader for the congregation.
Jay brings many skills and talents with him to GPC.
Petals and Prayers invites members and ministries to help themselves to small arrangements of flowers in the cooler of the flower room.
These small vases are made up weekly, either Sunday af-ternoon or Monday, to be taken to those in need.

The main purpose of light is to help people see better. Churches are called to help people see God bet-ter, and we are accomplishing this in our church in several ways. Our number one priority is worship. Worship in the Reformed Tradition (of which Presbyterians are a part) places its emphasis on the character of God: His loving nature, His judgment, His mercy and His holiness. These are extolled in one way or another in our service each week through music, prayer and preaching.
Another primary way people see God is through our caring and compassionate ministries. The reality of life in our world is that people suffer; when we respond compassionately as Jesus did, we help people see Him. People suffer the consequences of sin (their own and others), and we respond with the same mercy that God shows all sinners. We view everyone as a sinner for whom Christ died, and God’s love poured out in Christ is the only remedy for human sin and the suffering that results. People suffer from illnesses, injuries, and broken relationships – and our church offers love in each situation. By being the Christian compassionate community, we are offering light into people’s dark worlds so that they can see God.
We also offer light through our education program. All of us are disciples, which means that we are constantly listening to and studying Christ’s instructions for our lives. Our adult education program is un-dergoing a significant overhaul in anticipation of this coming fall. We are creating a vision for adult learning that will help all of us find places to grow closer to Christ as we follow Him week after week. The first disciples were constantly asking Jesus what He meant by His parables, and as He explained He also talked about how they applied to their lives in very practical ways. We hope more and more people will see God through our education offerings as we all grow in discipleship.
This is an exciting time to be part of GPC, and I thank God for all of you who are such a light to me and to the whole church as we look to God for all aspects of our lives.
A Note from the Pastor
Germantown Presbyterian will continue its mission to the homeless as host church July 29th – August 5th for the Memphis Interfaith Hospitality Network (MIHN). The network provides homeless families with safe and comfortable surroundings, placing several each week in the shelter and care of a participating congregation. It is the only emergency housing program in the Memphis area that allows families to stay together. Our church has been part of the network for many years, hosting one to four families and up to 14 people three times during the year. The most recent visit was in April; in addition to the host week this month, GPC will provide hospitality again for a week in mid-November. Our guests will arrive Sunday afternoon, July 29th. Weekdays they will prepare their breakfast and bag lunches, then leave by 6:30 a.m. via MIHN van or personal transpor-tation for the day-site at First Baptist Church. Some family members are employed and will go to their jobs. Others will spend each day searching for employment, looking for housing, receiving counseling and working on issues pertaining to their situation, returning to GPC by 6 p.m. The Saturday schedule is less structured and the families will move to the next church shelter after lunch on Sunday, August 5th. The mission is coordinated by a team but relies on the generosity of time and resources from dozens of volunteers.
How GPC becomes “Home” for a Week: Former classrooms and offices on the level above Warren Hall become sleeping and family rooms for the MIHN guests. GPC coordinators stock each family’s quar-ters with a lamp, fan, mattress pads and bed linens, alarm clocks and miscellaneous personal products. The MIHN trailer carries 16 folding beds and pil-lows. Hosts will unload, take to the elevator and push those items down the hallways to the guest rooms. The procedure reverses the following Sunday. GPC provides pack ‘n’ play cribs for infants and toddlers. The two second floor rest rooms near the youth lounge each have showers. The MIHN team adds bath mats, baskets of toiletries and stacks of bath towels and wash cloths. Meals are prepared and served from Warren Hall kitchen. Dinners are served in Warren Hall. Families have access to the washer, dryer and laundry supplies in the preschool level below the activities center. Guests are invited to use the youth lounge for televi-sion watching or the living room in the sleeping room hall to relax.
Here are ways to support and participate:• Please welcome guests on arrival Sunday, July 29th at 1:30 p.m., and help move their possessions to guest rooms.• Donate breakfast and lunch items—shopping from an assigned list—to be used during the week and deliver items to GPC by 11 a.m. Sunday, July 29th.• Provide dinner, to be delivered to GPC no later than 6 p.m. and, if possible, remain as evening hosts until 9 p.m. GPC members and their families are encouraged to join the MIHN guests for the meal. Lunches for Saturday and Sunday, August 4th and 5th, are also needed, by 11:30 a.m. each date.• Stay overnight from 9 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. • Be a daytime host, in two hour segments, on Saturday, August 4th, and Sunday morning, August 5th.• Bid farewell to guests on Sunday, August 5th, helping load possessions in the MIHN trailer, driving to the next host church and helping with transfer of personal items and beds.
Here’s how to volunteer:• We are using volunteerspot.com for our master sign-up list. We will invite you via e-mail to volunteer spot and you can sign up for a spot if you are available to help, or would like to volunteer. • Contact Sharon Goldsworthy at [email protected] or 754-2149.• Complete the green sheet distributed at worship on Sunday mornings during July.• Connect with friends from fellowship groups, church school classes or organizations to partner for dinners or other assignments.
As a church, we strive to help people see God better and more clearly each day. How great would it be for everyone to see our church’s programs and automatically respond with appreciation for God. How great would it be for everyone to see an outreach program of GPC and say, “God must be so good and powerful.” If the end result of all we do is that people see, understand, and love God more – then we have succeeded wildly as a church. The world judges by different criteria. The world judges success first by profit, numbers, growth, and competi-tive wins. Don’t get me wrong, I am for all of these; but for a church they are a result of faithfulness and not the first criteria by which we measure success. I do believe that: if we are faithful, if our worship is theologically sound, if our programs are biblically based, and if our compassion mirrors that of Jesus - then we will also be financially sound, our numbers will grow and our church will be blessed. But most important of all, people will see that we love and serve the God of history who is working redemption in the world and among His people.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Everyone is cordially invited to a Farewell Reception Sunday, July 29th at noon in Warren Hall to express gratitude to Assistant Pastor Rev. Kaul as she completes her ministry at GPC. Hired by interim pastor Charlie Webster, Norlita has served the Lord by serving our congregation for the past 18 months. She has ministered in many faithful ways, including leading worship, teaching and visiting the sick and homebound. Norlita’s kind heart, gentle spirit, com-passion and her many other talents will be missed.
A love gift will be collected to present to Norlita to show her GPC’s deep appreciation. If you want to participate in this offering, please send or bring your money to the office or put it in the offering plate on Sunday morning. If a check is written, it should be made out to GPC with “Norlita Love Gift” on the memo line. All are invited to wish Rev. Norlita Kaul our very best as she follows God’s lead in her life.

Homeruns for
HungerHomeruns for Hunger update – In April, the Redbirds hit 9 homeruns, and in May they hit 11 for a total of 20 so far.
Remember – you can pledge any amount, anything from 5 cents to $500 or more. The choice is yours. You can sign up for one game or all of them. The money will be donated at the end of the season to MIFA, the food bank or the soup kitchen. Upcoming Online Changes to GPCAs most of you know, GPC is going through many digital transitions to make our online GPC commu-nity stronger. We are converting to a new website platform Monday, July 9th that will be easier and more efficient for you to use. There will be a survey you can take evaluating the website - so that we can make adjustments as needed. We will keep you constantly informed on this matter through e-mail updates.

Welcome New Members
Bill moved to Memphis in May of 2011 from Indianapolis to be close to his son and his family. Bill received a BS de-gree from East Tennessee State University and a MS degree from UT – Knoxville. The Powell family moved to Memphis in January from Atlanta. Kevin and Sharon attended the University of Alabama. Brook, who is in the eighth grade, and Kristen, who is in the fourth grade, attend Harding Academy. Kevin’s special interest is choir. This family enjoys boat-ing, camping and canoeing. Judy is originally from Blytheville, AR. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, she moved to Memphis. Judy has two grown sons, one daughter in-law and four grandchildren. Her interests include needlepoint, calligraphy, scrimshaw, bridge, making jewelry and having fun with her family. She also has the travel bug and took a trip to Greece in June. Judy says that she is a Trey Thomas groupie. Whenever he sings a solo, Judy is here to sit with Trey’s mother, Agnes. Judy can be reached at 8462 Lansingwood Cove, Germantown, TN 38139, 901-753-3708.
The Spanglers moved to Memphis in August 2011 from Arizona. Bobbie Ann attended Albuquerque Technical Voca-tional Institute and Steven attended Muskingum University. Steven is a music teacher with Memphis City Schools and plays a number of instruments, including bass guitar, tuba, violin, and cello and Bobbie Ann likes to work with children. Madison attends Germantown Elementary Prekindergarten and plays soccer for GPC. The Spanglers can be reached at 3591 Eagle Trace, #301, Memphis, TN 38125, 901-574-8561.
Several months ago, the Fairfield Bay News ran an article asking for residents and readers to contribute to a Backpack Ministry for Shirley Elementary School students. From that article, approximately 20 new back-packs were donated by FFB residents. A great BIG thanks goes to each of those who donated !
Recently, another donation was made; from the Memphis Grizzlies’ Head Coach’s charity organization, Lionel Hollins Charity. This time, 60 backpacks were donated to Shirley Elementary School students. These came from an overage from a “Bowling for Backpacks” event conducted in Memphis by the Lionel Hollins Charity.
Upon donation, the Principal of Shirley Elementary, Randy Roberson (pictured above), asked, “Do you know how many kids, and their families, will be so positively effected by this gift?”
Jenni Lewis (also pictured), Secretary at Shirley Elementary, and the coordinator of this program, was excited by the donations. Both were extremely appreciative!
We now have approximately 25 backpacks donated by GPC church and its members. We are at approximately 235 total backpacks given to a school of about three-hundred (300) students in total.
Donations do not have to be made at any given time, but can be made all year long. Just bring backpacks (new or used) to the church office; we will get them to the right person or place.
Again, a big thanks to the GPC community and the FFB residents, who have, or will, participate in this program. The students, administration and faculty at Shirley Elementary GREATLY appreciate all efforts to support them.

On Sunday, June 17th the Session of German-town Presbyterian Church was proud to dedi-cate the library in honor of Rev. Dr. Ernest H. Mellor’s years of faithful service to the church.
Dr. Mellor served GPC as a senior pastor from June 1963 to June 1973. He established the Pastoral Counseling Center of Greater Memphis in 1973 and retired there in 1995. He served as an interim pastor for various churches in the Memphis Presbytery before returning to GPC to serve as Parish Associate from 1995 to 2005.
This is the only time you’ll see Bobby out of a suit...Ribbon Cutting for the Bobby Lanier Farm Park, Germantown.
Will Jones and Dick Goughnour had a great and insightful time at the Stephen Ministry Train-ing Conference in Orlando last month.

Join Us! Coming Up: All women of the church and their guests, teach-ers, or mothers who need a break - please meet in

The guest speaker will be Dr. Joe Donaho who will be speaking to us on the details of the Memorial Garden planned for the courtyard of our church. Dr. Joe is always a favorite speaker, so come early for a good seat! A delicious salad lunch will be
served by Alinda Fahrenkopf ’s circle.
Please continue your support of our local mis-sions by bringing your Johnson Auxiliary dona-tions and Project Outreach school donations.
The food needed for Project Outreach the month of July is canned fruit and jello. The bins are lo-
cated in the AC.
Women interested in joining a Circle of the Presbyterian Women are encouraged to contact the church office. New circles are being formed for the new year, and we want you to be a part! PW Circles meet the first Tuesday of the month at the church. If you are not available during the day, there is an evening Circle. Most meetings last one hour. PW serves several missions in our area and abroad through collection efforts. We have a year-long Bible Study taught by able Bible Leaders. There is no homework each month, although study guides are provided and they are a very interesting read. We offer a time for prayer requests, and Circles bond in this small group fellowship for two years.
Please consider being a part of this vital and caring ministry! The PW purpose, clearly stated, reads:

to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,to support the mission of the church worldwide,

A BIG THANK you to the Chancel Choir for their work and leadership in worship over the past church year. They are not only talented but dedicated. They rehearse weekly, sing every Sunday and strive to maintain qual-ity in the music they present in leading the GPC congregation in worship through music. Each summer they take a break for several weeks.
This summer the Chancel Choir will take five Sundays off, July 8th to August 5th. On August 12th, the ladies in the choir will invite other ladies of GPC to join them for our annual Women of the Church Sunday. We will all meet at 9:50 a.m. in the choir room to rehearse and prepare for worship. Mark this date on your calendar and plan to sing with the Women of the Church on Sunday August 12th.
FAMILY Choir August 5thSunday August 5th will be Family Choir Sunday. We invite entire families to join us in the choir loft and lead our congregation in worship. Mothers, fathers, children and grandparents are welcome. Whether a family of two or ten you are invited and encouraged to sing in the choir on this special Sunday. We will meet in the sanctuary choir loft beginning at 10:20 a.m. Come even if you go to Sunday School and arrive late. We will rehearse songs you know and love to sing; we will make a joyful noise unto the Lord. We had family choir Sunday several years ago and have had numerous requests to bring it back. It will return August 5th; we look forward to seeing you there.
We welcome and ENCOURAGE YOU to join Chancel Choir. Speak to Jerold, Carolyn or any choir member about joining the choir. We sing for the last time before our summer break Sunday July 1st; plan to join us. Women interested in joining a Circle of the Presbyterian Women are encouraged to contact the church office. New circles are being formed for the new year, and we want you to be a part! PW Circles meet the first Tuesday of the month at the church. If you are not available during the day, there is an evening Circle. Most meetings last one hour. PW serves several missions in our area and abroad through collection efforts. We have a year-long Bible Study taught by able Bible Leaders. There is no homework each month, although study guides are provided and they are a very interesting read. We offer a time for prayer requests, and Circles bond in this small group fellowship for two years.

A BIG THANK you to the Chancel Choir for their work and leadership in worship over the past church year. They are not only talented but dedicated. They rehearse weekly, sing every Sunday and strive to maintain qual-ity in the music they present in leading the GPC congregation in worship through music. Each summer they take a break for several weeks.
This summer the Chancel Choir will take five Sundays off, July 8th to August 5th. On August 12th, the ladies in the choir will invite other ladies of GPC to join them for our annual Women of the Church Sunday. We will all meet at 9:50 a.m. in the choir room to rehearse and prepare for worship. Mark this date on your calendar and plan to sing with the Women of the Church on Sunday August 12th.
FAMILY Choir August 5thSunday August 5th will be Family Choir Sunday. We invite entire families to join us in the choir loft and lead our congregation in worship. Mothers, fathers, children and grandparents are welcome. Whether a family of two or ten you are invited and encouraged to sing in the choir on this special Sunday. We will meet in the sanctuary choir loft beginning at 10:20 a.m. Come even if you go to Sunday School and arrive late. We will rehearse songs you know and love to sing; we will make a joyful noise unto the Lord. We had family choir Sunday several years ago and have had numerous requests to bring it back. It will return August 5th; we look forward to seeing you there.

On Sunday, June 17th the Session of German-town Presbyterian Church was proud to dedi-cate the library in honor of Rev. Dr. Ernest H. Mellor’s years of faithful service to the church.
Dr. Mellor served GPC as a senior pastor from June 1963 to June 1973. He established the Pastoral Counseling Center of Greater Memphis in 1973 and retired there in 1995. He served as an interim pastor for various churches in the Memphis Presbytery before returning to GPC to serve as Parish Associate from 1995 to 2005.

Judy is originally from Blytheville, AR. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, she moved to Memphis. Judy has two grown sons, one daughter in-law and four grandchildren. Her interests include needlepoint, calligraphy, scrimshaw, bridge, making jewelry and having fun with her family. She also has the travel bug and took a trip to Greece in June. The Spanglers moved to Memphis in August 2011 from Arizona. Bobbie Ann attended Albuquerque Technical Voca-tional Institute and Steven attended Muskingum University. Steven is a music teacher with Memphis City Schools and plays a number of instruments, including bass guitar, tuba, violin, and cello and Bobbie Ann likes to work with children. Several months ago, the Fairfield Bay News ran an article asking for residents and readers to contribute to a Backpack Ministry for Shirley Elementary School students. From that article, approximately 20 new back-packs were donated by FFB residents. A great BIG thanks goes to each of those who donated !
Recently, another donation was made; from the Memphis Grizzlies’ Head Coach’s charity organization, Lionel Hollins Charity. This time, 60 backpacks were donated to Shirley Elementary School students. These came from an overage from a “Bowling for Backpacks” event conducted in Memphis by the Lionel Hollins Charity.
Upon donation, the Principal of Shirley Elementary, Randy Roberson (pictured above), asked, “Do you know how many kids, and their families, will be so positively effected by this gift?”
Jenni Lewis (also pictured), Secretary at Shirley Elementary, and the coordinator of this program, was excited by the donations. Both were extremely appreciative!
We now have approximately 25 backpacks donated by GPC church and its members. We are at approximately 235 total backpacks given to a school of about three-hundred (300) students in total.
Donations do not have to be made at any given time, but can be made all year long. Just bring backpacks (new or used) to the church office; we will get them to the right person or place.
Again, a big thanks to the GPC community and the FFB residents, who have, or will, participate in this program. The students, administration and faculty at Shirley Elementary GREATLY appreciate all efforts to support them.

Norlita’s kind heart, gentle spirit, com-passion and her many other talents will be missed.

The main purpose of light is to help people see better. Churches are called to help people see God bet-ter, and we are accomplishing this in our church in several ways. Our number one priority is worship. Worship in the Reformed Tradition (of which Presbyterians are a part) places its emphasis on the character of God: His loving nature, His judgment, His mercy and His holiness. These are extolled in one way or another in our service each week through music, prayer and preaching.
Another primary way people see God is through our caring and compassionate ministries. The reality of life in our world is that people suffer; when we respond compassionately as Jesus did, we help people see Him. People suffer the consequences of sin (their own and others), and we respond with the same mercy that God shows all sinners. We view everyone as a sinner for whom Christ died, and God’s love poured out in Christ is the only remedy for human sin and the suffering that results. People suffer from illnesses, injuries, and broken relationships – and our church offers love in each situation. By being the Christian compassionate community, we are offering light into people’s dark worlds so that they can see God.
We also offer light through our education program. All of us are disciples, which means that we are constantly listening to and studying Christ’s instructions for our lives. Our adult education program is un-dergoing a significant overhaul in anticipation of this coming fall. We are creating a vision for adult learning that will help all of us find places to grow closer to Christ as we follow Him week after week. The first disciples were constantly asking Jesus what He meant by His parables, and as He explained He also talked about how they applied to their lives in very practical ways. We hope more and more people will see God through our education offerings as we all grow in discipleship.
This is an exciting time to be part of GPC, and I thank God for all of you who are such a light to me and to the whole church as we look to God for all aspects of our lives.
A Note from the Pastor
Germantown Presbyterian will continue its mission to the homeless as host church July 29th – August 5th for the Memphis Interfaith Hospitality Network (MIHN). The network provides homeless families with safe and comfortable surroundings, placing several each week in the shelter and care of a participating congregation. It is the only emergency housing program in the Memphis area that allows families to stay together. Our church has been part of the network for many years, hosting one to four families and up to 14 people three times during the year. The most recent visit was in April; in addition to the host week this month, GPC will provide hospitality again for a week in mid-November. Our guests will arrive Sunday afternoon, July 29th. Weekdays they will prepare their breakfast and bag lunches, then leave by 6:30 a.m. via MIHN van or personal transpor-tation for the day-site at First Baptist Church. Some family members are employed and will go to their jobs. Others will spend each day searching for employment, looking for housing, receiving counseling and working on issues pertaining to their situation, returning to GPC by 6 p.m. The Saturday schedule is less structured and the families will move to the next church shelter after lunch on Sunday, August 5th. The mission is coordinated by a team but relies on the generosity of time and resources from dozens of volunteers.
How GPC becomes “Home” for a Week: Former classrooms and offices on the level above Warren Hall become sleeping and family rooms for the MIHN guests. GPC coordinators stock each family’s quar-ters with a lamp, fan, mattress pads and bed linens, alarm clocks and miscellaneous personal products. The MIHN trailer carries 16 folding beds and pil-lows. Hosts will unload, take to the elevator and push those items down the hallways to the guest rooms. The procedure reverses the following Sunday. GPC provides pack ‘n’ play cribs for infants and toddlers. The two second floor rest rooms near the youth lounge each have showers. The MIHN team adds bath mats, baskets of toiletries and stacks of bath towels and wash cloths. Meals are prepared and served from Warren Hall kitchen. Dinners are served in Warren Hall. Families have access to the washer, dryer and laundry supplies in the preschool level below the activities center. Guests are invited to use the youth lounge for televi-sion watching or the living room in the sleeping room hall to relax.
Here are ways to support and participate:• Please welcome guests on arrival Sunday, July 29th at 1:30 p.m., and help move their possessions to guest rooms.• Donate breakfast and lunch items—shopping from an assigned list—to be used during the week and deliver items to GPC by 11 a.m. Sunday, July 29th.• Provide dinner, to be delivered to GPC no later than 6 p.m. and, if possible, remain as evening hosts until 9 p.m. GPC members and their families are encouraged to join the MIHN guests for the meal. Lunches for Saturday and Sunday, August 4th and 5th, are also needed, by 11:30 a.m. each date.• Stay overnight from 9 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. • Be a daytime host, in two hour segments, on Saturday, August 4th, and Sunday morning, August 5th.• Bid farewell to guests on Sunday, August 5th, helping load possessions in the MIHN trailer, driving to the next host church and helping with transfer of personal items and beds.

As a church, we strive to help people see God better and more clearly each day. How great would it be for everyone to see our church’s programs and automatically respond with appreciation for God. How great would it be for everyone to see an outreach program of GPC and say, “God must be so good and powerful.” If the end result of all we do is that people see, understand, and love God more – then we have succeeded wildly as a church. The world judges by different criteria. The world judges success first by profit, numbers, growth, and competi-tive wins. Don’t get me wrong, I am for all of these; but for a church they are a result of faithfulness and not the first criteria by which we measure success. I do believe that: if we are faithful, if our worship is theologically sound, if our programs are biblically based, and if our compassion mirrors that of Jesus - then we will also be financially sound, our numbers will grow and our church will be blessed. But most important of all, people will see that we love and serve the God of history who is working redemption in the world and among His people.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Germantown Presbyterian Church is pleased to announce Jay Howell as the new Associate Pastor.
After dozens of resumes were reviewed by the Associate Pastor Nomination Committee, it was decided that Jay would be a great fit for the GPC family.
In June, after much prayer, the committee extended an offer to Jay Howell and he accepted!
All of the members of the commit-tee are very excited about Jay. They feel that he will quickly become a tremendous spiritual leader for the congregation.
Jay brings many skills and talents with him to GPC.
Petals and Prayers invites members and ministries to help themselves to small arrangements of flowers in the cooler of the flower room.
These small vases are made up weekly, either Sunday af-ternoon or Monday, to be taken to those in need.

The Vine is GPC’s newsletter for publicizing church events and com-municating the important aspects of church life. The Vine is now be-
ing published once a month. It will be mailed on the last Wednesday
of each month so that the month’s following events can be known. However, we will only continue mailing The Vine to those who
request it. Please come by the of-fice to fill out a form if you haven’t already. Also, articles for The Vine
are due the 3rd Monday of each month. Please e-mail articles to
[email protected]. He is a thoughtful communicator with a good sense of humor. He is very excited about getting to know all of you.
