Dear Readers,

Happy New Year to you all! On the ‘coldest night of 2017 so far’ I couldn’t clear the frozen snow off my windscreen so I never made it to the December Parish Council meeting, so no PC minutes I’m afraid. You can get the official minutes from www.minsterworthparishcouncil.org.uk.

HISTORICAL SNIPPETTS AROUND MINSTERWORTH

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked why Minsterworth is such a long strung-out village. Undoubtedly, the presence of the A48 main road has influenced development (the road was turnpiked in 1726), but the explanation goes back much further – at least to Anglo Saxon times.

The Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086, describes the lands controlled by Anglo Saxon lords before the Normans took control and it provides us with a good idea of what the area we now think of as Minsterworth looked like. According to Domesday, the area of Minsterworth comprised three separate manorial estates each with its own community, two small ones known as Murcott and Dunny and the third larger one un-named but identifiable by analysis as Minsterworth. Thus we have a picture of three separate hamlets or communities under different manorial lords. This situation continued through much of the medieval period with all three estates being held by the abbey of St Peter’s Gloucester but under the over- lordship of the Crown and then of the Duchy of Lancaster. By the 13th century a parish church was set up to serve this collection of settlements and this too will have had the effect of bring them closer together, with the church at its centre. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the lands of Minsterworth were redistributed or sold off by the Crown to wealthy new owners and we begin to see the development of a single manor of Minsterworth. Its centre and manor house was probably near to the church, very likely where Tithe Cottage now stands. By 1757 when Sir Charles Barow acquired the rights to the manor and set up his grand residence at Hygrove, Minsterworth was effectively a single manor estate and a consolidated settlement stretching from Murcott in the north-east down to Dunny in the west. Minsterworth Village Hall

So what have we been up to...

Since the Village Hall AGM in the Church on Tuesday 20th June what on earth has the new committee been up to – you’ve gone very quiet?

Well, after putting on the fete at Hygrove in record time we have been dealing with various regulatory issues & getting to grips with the bank’s ‘safeguarding’ process. This gets in the way of business & seems like one more obstacle to take up time & adds no value but we were just unlucky to be chosen at random. I’m sure the bank really is safeguarding donors’ assets. Lets hope we miss the next one!

Meanwhile we’ve been fortunate to receive a number of generous donations, making use of the government’s extra 25% of Gift Aid. And Brian has taken a lot of bookings for hiring of the Hall too. So our finances are looking much better than they were, but we know that something unexpected could well come our way as it did for the previous committee.

We will open up the Hall on Saturday 18th January (see p. 3) for villagers to meet up in daylight after the festive season. We also plan to have a fete at our own village hall & grounds, date TBC. We will have a programme of events for 2018, but really we need to get on with applying for grants to renovate the Hall and bring it up to date – especially the kitchen! The Whist Drive There was the feeling of Christmas for the December whist drive with a well decorated tree in the fireplace and decorations around the hall. The burning question on everyone’s lips was “how did they get that tree into the Hall?” Thanks are due to the Hall committee who obviously spent quite a time making it all look so festive. There were prizes of chocolates, biscuits, wine, groceries etc chosen by the lucky winners of both the whist and the raffle. Thanks are due to all those who kindly gave prizes which reflected in the proceeds being more than usual - £115. As always thank you too, for the kitchen helpers, and those who set up and put away the tables and chairs.

The next monthly whist drive will be on Monday 1st January at Minsterworth Village Hall, 7.30pm. New players are always welcome.

Severn Bore ramping up?

Given to looking up Severn Bore times as I am I checked to see if the 2018

times were out yet and they are.

I can report that for the most part the prospects continue to be rather

uninspiring but there will be a 4* morning bore in February and in March

4* morning bores on the 1st

weekend, so expect lots of excited people

coming to Minsterworth to view.

Night time 4* bores in August, September and October but all mid-week.

So we’re on the upward part of that cycle. Will we see 5* bores in 2019 or

is that too soon? Probably.

For those new to the village it’s worth taking the time to watch a bore.

They can be slightly later than predicted so go early & accept that you may

have a long wait. They’re not exactly exciting but the rise in river level

after the wave has passed never fails to impress me. The bank by

Minsterworth church is one of the best places to view from so you might

as well have a look – since you’re here.

An evening with Dame Janet Trotter DBE, Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire

Saturday 28th February 2018 Minsterworth Village Hall from 7.30pm

Dame Janet helped found the University of Gloucestershire in 2001and became its first Vice-Chancellor. In 2010 she was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. So what exactly is a Lord Lieutenant? What is their function? How did the office originate? Those who have heard her speak before know that Janet is an excellent, interesting and entertaining speaker. We are looking forward to another fun evening. All are welcome.
