welcome to the October edition of The Villager Magazine.Winter is just around the corner, as temperatures dip, leaves on thetrees turn brown and Saturday evenings are dedicated to Strictlyand X Factor. We will soon be shopping for Christmas, planningwhat to do for New Year and grumbling over our phone bills, ask-ing ourselves why it mattered so much that our favourite act won?

We all get an extra hour in bed on Sunday 25 October as theclocks move backwards one hour.

Saturday 31st is Halloween. Thought to be the one night of theyear when ghosts, witches and fairies are especially active, thespookiest thing we are likely to see however is trick or treaters somake sure you have stocked up with sweets to give them. Doyou remember the film Kes? Its 40 years since the acclaimed novelbecame a classic of British cinema. Enter our competition and youcould win tickets to see the new production which brings BarryHines haunting story of adolescence to the stage at the GrandTheatre.

If you enjoy eating out and saving money we have a great newoffer for you (see page 12). The new Villager dining out club cardis now available and could save you pounds, check it out. With the party season in the not too distant future, and Christmas just 10 weeks away, it is never too early to start thinking about how you can lose weight before the festive period.Christmas comes but once a year, a time to eat, drink and be merry, and for those of us who have been watching our waistlines throughout the year, the temptation to overindulge on both food and alcohol in pursuit of the Christmas spirit is all too real. Research shows that the average person gains between YHDQGWHQSRXQGVEHWZHHQ1RYHPEHUand January. So you may ask what hope do we have in reaching a healthier weight before Christmas and maintaining it over the festive season? The answer lies in starting your weight-loss journey now, setting goals and rewards that will spur you on to your main goal - your ideal weight, and a healthier life.If you have a weight-loss goal to reach by Christmas, then the LighterLife Programme might be the solution for you. Designed for people who are one stone or more overweight, it uses a nutritionally balanced approach to weight loss and weight management, along with group counselling sessions to help you make lasting changes, set realistic goals and change your mindset when it comes to food. All of which will help you reach your goal quickly in time for Christmas and stay on track over the festive season.

Val Charles from Brierley Hill knows all about Christmas excess and after losing nearly 4 stone in just 3 months on the LighterLife Programme, she is looking on track to her second slim Christmas. After seeing my summer holiday photos I just knew I had to do something about my weight problem, she said. I have always dreaded the end of year parties and wearing the inevitable shapeless clothes that covered me up.This year I am actually looking forward to wearing my new little black dress and I am not stressed at all about how I going look at this years festive get-togethers. Instead I am imagining just how pleasantly surprised my family and friends will be when they see me again, especially those who I havent seen since last Christmas. They may not even recognise the new slim and healthy me, she continued. One of the many reasons why people choose LighterLife is the speed at which they are able to lose weight, says Sarah Field, the LighterLife Counsellor for Stourbridge. Many of my clients have tried most diets and slimming clubs on the market and have been frustrated at the slow rate of weight loss, lost motivation and have just given up.She summed up: On the LighterLife Programme however, as the results

are effective and clients are able to see results from week one, this provides them with the motivation to continue on the programme in order to reach their target weight.7R QG RXW PRUH DERXW /LJKWHU/LIHprogramme or to book a free appointment call Sarah on 01384 374544 or visit www.lighterlife.com

  • The predominantly wet summer means thatlawns have more moss in them than usualat this time of year. Last year, I invested ina lawn scarifier. It is a German machine, very well made but a bit of a brute! Givenhalf a chance, I'm sure it would dig the lawnup completely. Taking advantage of thedrier conditions in September, I put my ma-chine to work, and within minutes, piles ofmoss and dead grass thatch were buildingup on my lawn. It seems a harsh treatment, but I know the lawn will be all the better forit. My green bin was full in no time, but withall that rubbish cleared from the grass, I ap-plied an autumn lawn food to give it a muchneeded a boost. With no real rain forecast,I watered the feed in last weekend so I cannow look forward to a decent lawn throughthe winter months. You may have noticed how the leaves frommany trees are beginning to fall early thisautumn. In large part, this is probably downto the exceptionally dry end to the summer, but it does make the garden look rather un-tidy. We can however recycle these by mix-ing them with any soft garden prunings, and putting them in the compost bin. Wellmade compost is a very valuable material, and I can never get too much of it. Letshope that before too many more fall off, weget some nice autumn tints on our shrubsand trees for us all to enjoy

t looks like September will turn out to beone of the driest months of the year, certainly in our partof the country. The absence of any signifi-cant wind or rain has allowed summer bed-ding, tubs and hanging baskets to continueflowering right into the beginning of au-tumn. In fact my Pulsar Geraniums lookedbetter at the end of September than theyhave done all summer. This can create a bitof a dilemma. I would really like to bepulling them out now, and getting on withplanting pansies, wallflowers and springbulbs, but it does seem a shame to takeeverything out when they are still lookingso good.By early October, I usually plan to be plant-ing up my tubs and borders so that all mynew plantings can become well establishedbefore the weather turns cold and wet. Thesoil is still warm now and experience hasshown that leaving it much later will resulta poorer display next spring. In gardening,it is always better to work with the seasons, and not leave things too late. Daffodil bulbscertainly need planting as soon as possiblebecause they naturally form new roots veryearly in the autumn. The winter flowering pansy has now be-come universally popular for autumn bed-ding, but in recent years, many strainsappear to have become more susceptible toa disease called 'downy mildew'. Unlike theubiquitous powdery mildew, this disease ef-fects the underside of leaves with a pinky-grey mould, and often by the time it isnoticed, the damage is done. It is also verydifficult to control. Not all pansy strains arebadly effected, but I prefer to plant thenewer strains of the smaller flowered violaslike the 'Patiola' or the 'Sorbet' varieties,What the flowers lack in size, they certainlymake up for in quantity, and with better dis-ease resistance, they are excellent value formoney.

How do I know when its time? The circumstances through which an animalwill come to the end of its life are varied.Maybe they are old and have been slowingdown for some time. Sometimes, more trag-ically, it can be very fast, an injury fromwhich they will never recover or a suddendecline in health that was not expected. Tryasking yourself these questions if you areconfused;Does your pet get up to greet you in themorning and when you come home, or dothey stay in their bed, uninterested in yourpresence? Are they still keen to eat their food and lookforward to meals or do they have to betempted to eat?Are they able to get up and about, to dotheir toilet and enjoy the sunshine, or arethey unable or unwilling to move them-selves?Are they interested in their own comfort? Will they find a comfortable spot to lie in, orwill they just flop down wherever they are?Animals for whom life has become a trial areoften uninterested in their surroundings, their owners or themselves. It is a clich butit is true, when the time comes for a pet youhave known for a long time, you do knowthat you are doing the right thing.

How is it done? Most people will bring their pet to the vets, but a few prefer the vet to come out to theirhomes. Remember it will be more expensiveto call the vet out and they may not be ableto come at a time of your choosing. If youcome to the surgery, always let the recep-tionist know why you are coming. A good re-ceptionist will book you in at the beginningor end of a clinic, so you will not have to waittoo long.

    FINALGOODBYESeuthanasia in pets

The vet will ask you to sign a permissionform and they will bring a nurse in to helpthem hold your pet. If you want to stay youwill be able to hold their head and talk tothem, if you do not wish to stay, simply letthe vet know, they will give you a few min-utes to say goodbye in private. When an an-imal is put to sleep, an injection is given intoone of its veins. This travels directly to theheart and the brain, stopping them both. Itworks within seconds. All your pet will feelis the prick of the needle, and then the feel-ing is exactly the same as going to sleep intheir basket.

Take as long as you need to say goodbye,do not feel like you have to leave straightaway, vets know this is difficult time and willunderstand. Do not forget to take your petscollar and lead if you wish. You will thenhave to decide what you wish to do withyour pets body. In general there are threeoptions; you can take them home to bury, let the vets look after them and the body willbe cremated, or you can have the ashes re-turned to you, although this will be more ex-pensive.

Coming to the end of your pets life and hav-ing them put to sleep is never easy, thereare important decisions to make with re-spect to whether you wish to stay with them, who would like to be there, where you wouldlike it done and what to do with their body.Try to think things through before it comesto the day, as then you will be able to grievewithout distractions. Very rarely do animalsdie on their own and without suffering. Eu-thanasia is a blessing and one of the mostimportant things you will ever do for yourpet.

If you have any questions about this or any otherpet related subject, you should contact your vet.Cat is the resident vet for PetStreet.co.uk, an on-line social networking site for pet lovers

There comes a time in every animal ownerslife when you have to make some very diffi-cult decisions and say your final goodbyesto a beloved pet. Although it can be dis-tressing, it is important to think about yourpets final day, how you would like it to goand what you would like to do with theirbody.
