This is it, folks – the last weekend of August. I’m seeing some early reds and yellows starting to color up the green forest canopy of our surrounding hillsides. No doubt a direct result of some cooler evenings – feels good, doesn’t it? It won’t be long before we’re awash in spectacular color and all sorts of autumn activities will be here before you know it. But lets not call it the end of summer yet! This weekend there is plenty of fun to be had: from the Beach Boys and

Bill Cosby at the Chautauqua Institution, Fox 103.1 FM Rocking the Docks at the Lakeview in Mayville, and the Diva Show Band at the Floating Stage next to the Italian Fisherman in Bemus Point. Next weekend has a summer finale blast off with the annual Light the Lakes celebration. So, dear readers, when you live and play in this corner of the Southern Tier, being bored is simply not an option - there’s always something fun to do! Enjoy! JZ

Dunkirk Music FestivalCultural District 2nd Annual Three-Day Event August 26-28, 2011

The Dunkirk Cultural District is planning the 2nd Annual Festival at the Dunkirk Light House again this year. The festival is expanding to include the weekend of August 26th, this will give the Dunkirk Cultural District (The Adams Art Gallery, The Dunkirk Historical Museum and the Dunkirk Light House) an opportunity to share information with the public about these great cultural gems in northern Chautauqua county as well as an opportunity to generate revenue to keep the “Culturals” of Dunkirk viable and alive to serve the public other times of the year also. Cultural activities draw people from other parts of the country and the world, last year this concert drew tourism from Buffalo, Florida, PA and Ohio. Increased tourism helps support local businesses. This year the Cultural District is planning a three-day festival and we have already received inquiries from other states asking for directions and concert information. The Dunkirk Cultural District was formed as a result of decreased government funding available, in response to this creative and innovative

solutions needed to be found to keep the doors open, the heat on and the programs available to the public. The City of Dunkirk may be small in comparison to other cities but the cultural viability is very much alive. The Adams Art Gallery hosts art shows year round, small intimate concerts and has a dance studio conduct dance classes to name a few projects ongoing. The Dunkirk Historical Museum is actually a very vibrant museum not only looking at past history but current history in the making with a lively folk arts program featuring dancing, music and puppet shows. The Dunkirk Light House is always updating and maintaining the beautiful grounds on the shores of Lake Erie as well as hosting a great archeological site and light house tours. Last year the festival was only on Friday night and was a hit with the energetic band “The Town Pants” as the headlining band, many other local bands such as “Cloud Called 9” from Westfield NY and “Three Dollar Bill” a family folk group from Forestville NY also had an opportunity to play for

the public. The Cultural District is able to produce this festival at no door cost to the public with generous donations from both the public and the private sector. It is an important mission of these groups to make this festival available to everyone. French Maestro in FredoniaWorld-Renowned Classical Guitarist Vists SUNY September 25 & 26

French maestro Roland Dy-ens brings his unparalleled classical guitar performance to SUNY Fredonia September 25, 2011.

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music welcomes world renowned classical guitarist, Roland Dyens, for a recital on Sunday, September 25 at 4pm in Rosch Recital Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. $15 general/$10 students. Tickets available at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office: 716-673-3501 or online at www.fredonia.edu/tickets. Known for his unfailing open-minded playing and improvisational openings, this French maestro is considered to be the “crème de la crème” of composers/arrangers/guitarists. Dyens is hailed for his ability to seamlessly blend all forms of music into each and every one of his programs. His stage presence, improvised openings and unique relationship with the listeners, undeniably position him at the forefront of guitar performance. SUNY Fredonia guitar professor, James Piorkowski, commented on the upcoming performance:“I am thrilled that this true one-of-a-kind musician will be returning to our campus. Maestro Dyens is arguably the one guitarist who is unrivaled in the combined skills of improvisation, composition, arranging and performing. To those in the know, Roland is unparalleled in his field, and I mean this globally.” Always transformative events, Roland Dyens’ concerts unfold as personal experiences of emotional awakening for the audience. Inspired by the

musical unity demonstrated in his concerts, audience members will often later use the impact of the artist’s virtuosity and creativity to guide their own perception of music and, more broadly, their lives as well. For those who are unfamiliar with the contours and nuances of classical guitar performance, one often witnesses an inspirational discovery of the instrument and its musical potential, not to mention the pleasure it gives the audience. “I like to call Roland ‘the poet of the guitar,’” said Mr. Piorkowski, “because of his delightful creativity, his sublime nuanced expression and his artistic transparency. It’s exquisite poetry on six strings.” Roland Dyens has a sensitive and colorful approach to the guitar. For a long time now, his music has been an integral part of the instrument’s repertoire, placing him at the heart of a select group of contemporary guitarist/composers who enjoy such a privileged position. His compositions and arrangements are widely performed and highly acclaimed throughout the world. They provide a new breath of life for the guitar as this player and composer never ceases to challenge the limitations of his instrument. “My advice?” added Mr. Piorkowski, “Whatever you do, don’t miss the Fredonia recital of this Parisian wonder.” The growing number of participants and auditors in Roland Dyens’ master classes is surely due to the depth of

his approach which is rich in innovative themes. With a keen sense of quality and emotional strength, his natural ability to communicate with younger generations of guitarists transforms the formality of a master class into a joyful encounter. In addition to the afternoon recital, Dyens will give a free master class at Fredonia on Monday, September 26 at 2pm in Rosch Recital Hall. Roland Dyens, who was quoted as saying that his 2009 visit to SUNY Fredonia was one of his “top three experiences as both a performer and teacher in the USA so far,” teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. My name is Joann Wellman...

To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

Hello! My Name is Joann Wellman and I am from Lakewood, NY. I am happily married to Michael Wellman and we have two beautiful chil-dren together. Our son, Jason, is currently living in Virginia Beach, VA while our daughter, Rachel is entering her senior year at Penn State University. I love to cook and entertain my family. catch the Blues during the afternoon hours at various establishments, including the White Inn, the East Side Grill, Lil Magill’s, and Muldoon’s. The music continues into the evening at DeJohn’s, 41 West, Muldoon’s, Valentine’s, and at Ellicottville Brewing Company West. The entire village will be devoted to the Blues for the day! Concerning the entertainment, Burdick said about twenty Blues bands will be involved.

Other activities going on the same day include the Taste of Fredonia in the park, where people get to sample foods from area restaurants. This will go from about lunchtime until the food is gone. Then at 4 o’clock, the Sauce Boss returns, as Bill Wharton makes a Cajun-style appearance. He’ll be cooking up a giant pot of gumbo and he will have all the necessary ingredients at his disposal. Burdick said, “He always attracts a crowd. Everyone in the audience gets a free bowl of gumbo.” Bon appetite! Don’t forget to make a stop at the Farmer’s Market, which opens at 9 a.m. Burdick notes

that the music in the park is free. Tickets for the Taste of Fredonia can be purchased on site. Last year’s Red, White, and Blues festival proved to be a great success. “There was a large crowd for the Sauce Boss and a lot of activities in the park. So I’m hoping for the same results.” Burdick would like to thank Robert Basil Chevrolet on Main Street and The Beaver Club on Prospect Street for being major sponsors. She also thanks all the volunteers and area businesses who donated their time and talents. You can find out more about the weekend by going on line and google “Festivals Fredonia.”

hours live music celebrating the great jazz composers of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. The hotel will host musical sets throughout the afternoon beginning on the 16th, and will have morning, afternoon and night shows on the 17th, and a brunch show on the 18th. Shows will include solo, duet, trio, band and vocal formats, featuring the likes of Dan Barrett, Rebecca Kilgore, and The Faux Frenchmen. Jazz impresario Joe Boughton originally established the event at Conneaut Lake in Ohio, and the event The Allegheny Jazz Society

originally presented the festival that is now under the sponsorship of the Chautauqua Institution The Athenaeum Hotel has hosted the festival, with sponsorship from the Chautauqua Institution, for the last 14 years. Many celebrities and dignitaries have stayed at the Athenaeum Hotel, including Thomas Edison, Amelia Earhart, Robert Kennedy, and ten U.S. Presidents beginning with Ulysses S. Grant. The Athenaeum, which was founded in 1881, was one of the first hotels to feature electric lights, and is now listed on the National Historic Register. The Chautauqua Institution, founded by Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent in 1874, is a not-for-profit educational

center covering 750 acres with about 7,500 persons residing at the facilities during a nine-week season. Over 142,000 scheduled public events take place at the institution, and over 8,000 students study art, music, dance, theater, writing skills, and various special interests during the year. For more information, call the Athenaeum Hotel at 1-800-821-1881, or email at [email protected]. Tickets for the jazz festival start at $110 per person for a single event or $300 per person for the weekend. do it this year,” Dalpra said. “But we’re hoping they come back next year.” Before the show, the winning ticket for the Camero Convertible donated by Shuts Auto Group will be selected. (All summer long tickets for

the raffle have been selling for $10, raising money for a new emergency room at the WCA hospital in Jamestown, N.Y. The winner can choose between the car on the floating dock or $30,000 cash.) For Bemus alone, the event draws between 5,000 to 10,000 people each year, which produces a $6 million to $7 million impact to the area, Dalpra said. However, the night won’t

be the only time to have some fun: in Westfield a festival will be in high gear to celebrate Labor Day weekend and Light the Lakes. More information can be found at Ilovenylakes.com and bemusbaypops.com. “The show is a fabulous, high-energy family event,” Dalpra said. “Little kids and seniors alike will love the display.”
