Former and current member of 10,000 Maniacs, John & Mary will play Chautauqua County’s unique Night Lights at The Heron this Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 9:15 p.m. Located in Panama, NY, Night Lights is a one-mile walk through a forest transformed with creative and interactive lighting. The eco-tourism attraction features entertainment on their Tiger Maple Stage in the middle of the woods, creating an incredible environment.

Skyrocketing colors will decorate the night in lights Sunday, September 4 throughout the Bemus Bay and Westfield area for the Light the Lakes event. For Bemus alone, the event draws between 5,000 to 10,000 people each year, which produces a $6 million to $7 million impact to the area.

The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony recently received a grant from the Rotary Club of Jamestown. The strings players of the Youth Symphony will begin rehearsals on September 17 for the opening concert of the season planned for Sunday evening, November 20 at SS. This annual bash celebrates local red and white wines, brews and blues with free music in the park and throughout the village. Activities for the whole family, vendors and the Farmer’s Market round out the festivities! This year’s headliner artist performing free in the Barker Commons Gazebo on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m., will be “The Sauce Boss,” Bill Wharton, and his blues band. Bill Wharton (Sauce Boss) has cooked gumbo on stage for over 175,000 for free. He mixes his own spicy original music--Florida Slide Guitar Blues--and adds his famous Liquid Summer hot sauce right into every night’s cooking demonstration of his own gumbo recipe. It’s a multi-sensory soul shouting picnic of rock and roll brotherhood. And at the end of the night, everybody eats.

Vocalist Rebecca Kilgore is dedi-cated to preserving what has been called “The Great American Song Book, ” featuring songs by masters like George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Rodgers and Hart. She is amongst the many talents that will perform during the Jazz festival at Chautauqua.

Music lovers have the opportunity to experience some of the world’s most renowned Jazz musicians while experiencing a taste of Victorian style luxury at the 14th annual Jazz at Chautauqua this September. The festival, which runs from Sept. 16 to 18, is held in the dining room of the Athenaeum Hotel located along the shore of Lake Chautauqua on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution. Jazz at Chautauqua has developed into one of the foremost jazz festivals in the northeast, and will feature over 30 of the best traditional jazz musicians from around the country, and even Australia. You may recall a hit song from the 1960’s by Arthur Conley called “Sweet Soul Music,” and it’s famous line “if you like good music”; transfer ‘Soul’ into ‘Blues’, and this masterpiece perfectly describes the upcoming fun-filled musical weekend in Fredonia. The Village of Fredonia is gearing up for their annual Red, White, and Blues Festival on Friday, September 9th and Saturday, September 10th. The annual bash celebrates local red and white wines, brews, and of course the blues. And the music is free. Christine Burdick, chairman of the event, is doing the honors this year in making the weekend a reality. She said everything is ready to go, “Just about as ready as we can get,” thanks to a lot of organizing work. The action starts Friday night on Prospect Street at the Liberty Café and the Beaver Club. Both will have exciting blues bands and great food. Most of the weekend’s activities take place on Saturday. Music in the Fredonia village park begins at 11 a.m. and continues through the early evening. You can also

Skyrocketing colors will decorate the night in lights Sunday, September 4 throughout the Bemus Bay and Westfield area. Once the clock strikes 7:30 p.m., the fourth annual “Light the Lakes” begins anew as the Boogie Wonder Band rocks the floating stage, located next to the Italian Fisherman in Bemus Point, playing disco throwbacks for all to enjoy. Homeowners surrounding Bemus Bay have commemorative flares in their yard ready to light up, and at 9:20 p.m. next Sunday they will simultaneously be lit creating a “Ring of Fire,” said Dan Dalpra, organizer and owner of the Italian Fisherman. Then at 9:31 p.m. the action takes to the sky as fireworks blast off in a synchronized fashion from seven different locations: the Overlook, Bemus Point Stow Ferry, Booty Bay, Long Point, two floating

barges and Westfield. Dalpra said the main detonator may be set off by a guest celebrity who will remained unnamed. During the display, airplanes will be flying overhead recording the entire thing. In past years, Dalpra and others have tried to have NASA try to see the show from space but because of timing, this proved to be impossible. However, this event is still considered one of the largest firework displays in North America. Since last year, the event has expanded in certain ways and shrunk in others. Dalpra said that before the event took place across many different towns such as Bemus Bay, Jamestown and Westfield, but instead the firework extravaganza now takes place mostly at Bemus Bay and Westfield. “Because of financial times, individual towns couldn’t afford to

Dunkirk Music FestivalCultural District 2nd Annual Three-Day Event August 26-28, 2011

The Dunkirk Cultural District is planning the 2nd Annual Festival at the Dunkirk Light House again this year. The festival is expanding to include the weekend of August 26th, this will give the Dunkirk Cultural District (The Adams Art Gallery, The Dunkirk Historical Museum and the Dunkirk Light House) an opportunity to share information with the public about these great cultural gems in northern Chautauqua county as well as an opportunity to generate revenue to keep the “Culturals” of Dunkirk viable and alive to serve the public other times of the year also. Cultural activities draw people from other parts of the country and the world, last year this concert drew tourism from Buffalo, Florida, PA and Ohio. Increased tourism helps support local businesses. This year the Cultural District is planning a three-day festival and we have already received inquiries from other states asking for directions and concert information. The Dunkirk Cultural District was formed as a result of decreased government funding available, in response to this creative and innovative

solutions needed to be found to keep the doors open, the heat on and the programs available to the public. The City of Dunkirk may be small in comparison to other cities but the cultural viability is very much alive. The Adams Art Gallery hosts art shows year round, small intimate concerts and has a dance studio conduct dance classes to name a few projects ongoing. The Dunkirk Historical Museum is actually a very vibrant museum not only looking at past history but current history in the making with a lively folk arts program featuring dancing, music and puppet shows. The Dunkirk Light House is always updating and maintaining the beautiful grounds on the shores of Lake Erie as well as hosting a great archeological site and light house tours. Last year the festival was only on Friday night and was a hit with the energetic band “The Town Pants” as the headlining band, many other local bands such as “Cloud Called 9” from Westfield NY and “Three Dollar Bill” a family folk group from Forestville NY also had an opportunity to play for

the public. The Cultural District is able to produce this festival at no door cost to the public with generous donations from both the public and the private sector. It is an important mission of these groups to make this festival available to everyone. The Cultural District is hoping to generate donations at the door from anyone who is able, as well as selling food, beverages and beer to generate revenue. This year the festival is also offering sites for artists or vendors to setup spaces on the light house lawn, if interested please contact us adams.art@live.com . National Event Kicks Off in Findley Lake, September 11 The Saint Bernard Club of America will kick off their National event with a Saint Bernard parade in Findley Lake , NY on September 11, 2011. Many members of the Saint Bernard Club of America will be arriving from all over the country to attend

Rhythm Revival Retreat Founding Member of Rusted Root to Hold Session Labor Day Weekend

Award winning teacher and founding member of the multi platinum selling band Rusted Root Jim Donovan returns to Sherman to host the 2nd annual Great Rhythm Revival Retreat on Labor Day weekend September 2, 3 and 4 on the site of the popular Great Blue Heron Music Festival 2361 Wait Corners Rd. to use the power of rhythm, drumming and dance as way to relieve stress, stimulate creativity and enrich their lives. Former and current member of 10,000 Maniacs, John & Mary will play Chautauqua County’s unique Night Lights at The Heron this Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 9:15 p.m. Located in Panama, NY, Night Lights is a one-mile walk through a forest transformed with creative and interactive lighting. The eco-tourism attraction features entertainment on their Tiger Maple Stage in the middle of the woods, creating an incredible environment. Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo have created five full-length albums in their 20+ years musical partnership. Lombardo was one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed 10,000 Maniacs; a Jamestown rock band that saw major rock n’ roll success during its ongoing 30-year career. With the exception of short stint, Ms. Ramsey has been the lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs since Natalie Merchant’s departure from the group in 1993. Farmer’s Market Youth DayFree Event this Friday Includes Games and Prizes Downtown Jamestown

Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation will be hosting its 7th Annual Farmer’s Market Youth Day on this Friday, August 26, 2011. This free event will take place from 11:00am-3:00pm during the weekly farmer’s market at 119-121 W Third Street. A variety of activities will be available for free to the local community. The event will be held rain or shine, with activities moving into the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center in the event of rain. West Third Street between Washington Street and Cherry Street will be closed from 8am through 4pm for this event, along with part of Foundry Alley. All vehicles should use Fourth Street or Second Street as an alternative route to reach their destinations. “We invite all of our community youth to come downtown this Friday and enjoy a free day of activities in conjunction with the weekly farmers market,” said Tiffani Conti, DJDC Special Projects Manager. “This is a great event for our local youth. The activities we bring in help promote a healthy lifestyle

and to educate the downtown community about our local agricultural community,” added Conti. The Soil Conservation Service will have their agricultural display and milking cow for those interesting in learning how to milk a cow. There will be a corn box with tractors and rocking horses for the kids to play on. Returning to the Farmers Market Youth Day for the fifth year is the Masonic ID Safety Program, available for toddlers, teens, and seniors. The mission of the Child ID Program is to aid in the safe recovery of a lost or missing child or senior citizen. This program is free of charge and will be set up during the event. The Jamestown Area YMCA will be providing “In It to Win It” games from 12pm-1pm with an appearance by their mascot, the Y-Guy. A free magic show provided by Mike Baron from 1-2pm. Mike has been performing magic for over 40 years. His show ranges from full stage shows with birds and bunnies to close-up magic. Tableside magic is his specialty.

Our very own Jamestown Jammers baseball team mascot, Bubba Grape the Baseball Ape, will be walking around to meet everyone and will be available for photo opportunities. Along with the Hamburgler from McDonald’s distributing Free Parfait coupons. Flippin’ Out Bounce Houses will have an inflatable slide available for kids to enjoy. Rides are $1 for 4 rides or $5 for an all day pass. All proceeds benefit local veterans in a variety of ways including handmade flag boxes. DJDC will be assembling free goodie bags for the first 200 youth day patrons. Businesses and organizations are welcome to include trinkets of any kind in each goodie. Items are to be dropped off at the DJDC offices by 5pm Wednesday or contact DJDC at 664-2477, ext 226. DJDC is looking for additional organizations and businesses to participate in the youth day event by providing a free activity or informational booth. 4H groups are also invited to bring their groups, animals, and displays. There will be two new activities this year at the Farmers Market Youth Day – Kids Eat Local Challenge and the Jamestown Pediatrics 1K Kids Run. The Kids Eat Local Challenge is open to all local youth. They will receive a participation sheet during the Farmers Market Youth Day that will allow them to participate in four to ten different activities involving the use of local produce. The challenge allows kids to learn about fresh foods and where they come from. Three prizes will be awarded at WIC Day at the Market on September 16th. Kid’s age kindergarten through fifth grade can participate in the Jamestown Pediatrics 1K Kids Run. The run will be held on Third Street from Washington Street to Prendergast Avenue. Dunkirk, N.Y. – Chautauqua Opportunities for Development, Inc. (CODI) and Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. (COI) are working together to offer an informative workshop for budding and established entrepreneurs. “Small Business Essentials” is a 10-week course covering all issues involved in starting a business and making it successful. In Dunkirk, the course begins September 13th and runs every Tuesday evening until November 15th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. located at 17 West Courtney St. For Jamestown, the course begins September 14th and runs every Wednesday evening until November 16th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Laughlin Community Action Center. The interactive workshop covers all aspects of getting a new business up and running including creating a business plan, financial

planning, filing permits, marketing, communications, legal issues, insurance and professionalism in business. It is suitable for both the prospective entrepreneur and for those who have been in business for awhile and want to review important business essentials. “In this workshop, our Business Development Specialist, Carol Ford, will explore what it takes for a business to be successful and also help establish individual determination to see if the prospective business owner(s) have the correct balance of determination and drive to make their business idea(s) come alive,” Robin Smith, COI Community Development Manager said. “The decision to become self-employed is a great responsibility. Therefore, we designed this interactive, step-by-step course, with real world applications to help micro enterprise participants gain an

understanding of what elements are important in a business plan such as: identifying product/service, choosing a business structure, identifying site needs, government regulations, pricing strategy, sales strategy, financing strategy, industry analysis, market analysis, competitive comparison, resources and tools that are useful with a small business start-up and, above all, techniques to remaining proactive. Ultimately, the prospective business owner(s) will have a completed business plan by the end of the course. The course is $125 and includes the cost of the workbook. Space is limited and those interested are encouraged to register early by calling the CODI offices at 661-9430 by noon on Wednesday, September 7th. . The course is partially funded by the Chautauqua Microenterprise Loan Fund Program.

Ironmen Take to the RinkTraining Camp for NAHL’s Newest Team Began this Week in Jamestown

The NAHL’s newest team, the Jamestown Ironmen, hit the ice this Tuesday to begin training camp. Training Camp will be run by Head Coach Dan Daikawa and his staff consisting of Assistant Coach Yugi Iwamoto and Goalie Coach Seth Wolfe. Coach Daikawa played collegiate hockey at the University of Miami from 1991-1993. He then played 11 years professionally in Japan and throughout Europe. After playing, he coached the Miami of Ohio’s club hockey team and he also served as the University’s Assistant Director of Programming at the Gaggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. Assistant Coach Yugi Iwamoto, a native of Japan; played 20 years in the Japanese Professional Hockey League after he graduated high school. Goalie Coach Seth Wolfe, originally from Pittsburgh, played for one year at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. He also played under Head Coach Dan Daikawa for the University of Miami’s Club Hockey Team for two years. Coach Wolfe also spent time in Nashville working with the Predators goalie coach Mitch Korn. Camp begins on August 23, 2011 and will take place on DFT Communications Arena A at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. Training Camp is scheduled daily from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and will run until their season opens on September 7, 2011 in Chicago, IL against the Chicago Hitmen.

Practices are open to the public and also to all media. Head Coach Dan Daikawa will be available for interviews after practices. “All of our players are working hard and are excited to be here,” explained Ironmen Head Coach Dan Daikawa. “Most of our players have been here through the weekend and they have been anxious to hit the ice and get to work.” The players have been in and out of the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena this past weekend as the Arena hosted its annual Summer Sizzle Adult Hockey Tournament. Training camp will resume on Wednesday August 23 and the Ironmen will practice for three days is a row with every fourth

day off. Their daily schedule will have them on the ice from 9 am – 12pm followed by a weight room workout. “We got an amazing response from the community to our need for host families, and all of our players will have a home this season,” said Daikawa. Tonight, the Ironmen players that are new to the area will get an opportunity to meet their host families at a team dinner being held at Roberto’s in Jamestown. “Our players and coaching staff are very excited to meet all of our host families tonight,” said Daikawa. “Players that are away from home can’t wait to meet their hosts and see what their new homes will be like.” Practices are open to the media and public.

Cancer Society Walk“Making Strides Against Cancer” Takes Place October 16, Jamestown

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational walk that raises awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research programs, as well as local patient and family service programs. Last year, more than 700 people participated in the event, which raised $65,000. This year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event will be held on Sunday, October 16th on the Jamestown Community College Campus in Jamestown.. Other activities going on the same day include the Taste of Fredonia in the park, where people get to sample foods from area restaurants. This will go from about lunchtime until the food is gone. Then at 4 o’clock, the Sauce Boss returns, as Bill Wharton makes a Cajun-style appearance. He’ll be cooking up a giant pot of gumbo and he will have all the necessary ingredients at his disposal. Burdick said, “He always attracts a crowd. Everyone in the audience gets a free bowl of gumbo.” Bon appetite! Don’t forget to make a stop at the Farmer’s Market, which opens at 9 a.m. Burdick notes

that the music in the park is free. Tickets for the Taste of Fredonia can be purchased on site. Last year’s Red, White, and Blues festival proved to be a great success. “There was a large crowd for the Sauce Boss and a lot of activities in the park. The Bemus Point Midget Football Cheerleaders had a Car Wash/Bake Sale in honor of Hayley Clark! Hayley is a 2nd grader at Bemus Point Elementary School that suffered a stroke earlier this year. The money raised from the sale went to Hayley. She is also making a donation to the Charity of her choice!!
