AnotherareaofsafetyconcernfortheMillsneighborhoodistherecentnumberofdaytimeburglariesonLaCarmanDrive,SalconCliffDrive,TanakLaneandHitcherBendinthepast2months.AustinPoliceDepartmentvisitedwiththeNewVillagesHOAinNovemberandcitedtwocarburglariesintheFall,butourneighborhoodhadbeenquietforthemostpart.Thingshavechangeddrastically,especiallywith the graffiti that popped up at the school mid-late January. We allmustbeproactiveandneverhesitatetocall9-1-1whenweseesomething suspicious. APD and Travis County Sheriff’s Office can’t respondtowhattheydon’tknowabout.

The City ofAustin and theTexasAgriLife Extension are continuing their new campaignthat asksAustinites to avoid using weed and feed products. Over45,000poundsofatrazine,aweedkillingchemical,aresoldeachyearinAustininpopularfertilizer-plus-herbicideproducts.Muchofthechemicalthatisnotusedbythelawnistravelingtoourcreeksandgroundwater.Theresultisthatweareseeingthechemicalmuchmoreoftenandatmoremonitoringsitesthanwehaveinthepast. While the levels of the chemical detected are fortunately stilllow, theCityofAustinand theAgriLifeExtensionare launchinganeweducationalprogramtokeepAustin’swaterclean.ThroughGrowGreen,theirearth-wiselandscapingprogram,theyareaskinghomeownerscity-widetotakeactionnowandavoidusingweedandfeedproducts. During my childhood, we entertained ourselves with ourimaginations,boardgamesandbyplayingoutside.Computerswere,comparedtonow,large,expensivemachinesfoundonlyinabusinesssetting.Allofthathaschangedduringthepastthirtyyearswiththeinventionofpersonalcomputersandthesubsequentcommoditizationof them and the Internet over the past fifteen years. Today’s generation ofchildrenisbornintoaworldfullofcomputers,andexposuretothemtypicallybeginsathomeataveryearlyage.ManychildrenarealreadyhighlyskilledintheiruseandtheuseoftheInternetbythetimetheybeginelementaryschool.Yetwithoutsafeguardsinplace,ourchildrenareatrisk. Accordingtothemostrecentpublishedestimates,approximately12%ofallwebsitesarepornographyorrelatedtopornographyand79%ofunwantedyouthexposuretopornographyoccursinthehomeEquallydisturbingaretwoothertrends:onlinebullyingandtherise
oftheonlinechildpredator.Itisestimatedthat9%ofchildrenarebulliedorharassedonline–whetheronasocialnetworkingwebsite,suchasMySpace,orviae-mail.Itisalsoestimatedthat13%ofchildren were sexually solicited in 2005, with 4% of these beingreferredtoas“aggressivesolicitations”,inwhichsolicitorsmadeorattempted to make offline contact with youth .
