The Viking Age

Where did they come from?
• The Vikings came to Ireland over one thousand years ago.
• They came from Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Battle of Clontarf • The Battle of Clontarf
took place on 23rd of April 1014. The battle was
between Brian Boru and the Vikings. It ended in a rout of the Maél Mórdas forces, along with the death of one of his men : Brian had been killed by some norsemen.
The Irish won the battle in the end .
Women's clothes
• Viking women wore a long dress to the ankles with an apron over it.
• They wore brooches to keep the apron up.
• They made there clothes from wool and linen.
Men's clothes
• Men wore tunics and trousers.• Their clothes were fastened by brooches
and belts.• They also made their clothes from wool
and linen.
Longships
• The Vikings were truly the lords of the sea.
• They sailed all over Europe in longships.
• They were long, narrow, graceful, light, wooden ships.

Weapons
• All Vikings carried weapons.
• They had spears, bows and arrows, knives, axes and swords.
• They wore helmets and chain mail for protection.
Vikings houses
• Viking houses were built out of blocks, stones or wood.• The houses were long and box shaped with a thatched
roof.• Most houses had just one room but rich peoples houses
had a hall, a kitchen a bedroom and a large family room.
