At the Victoria University of Manchesterall staff were invited to attend anafternoon tea party in a huge marquee inthe main quad with the Vice-ChancellorProfessor Sir Martin Harris on 7September.

On 8 September In a Day of Celebrationat UMIST, a marching band kicked offthe day’s events which included anauction, human table football and abucking bronco.

Staff on each campus celebrated their respective universities withindividual celebrations earlier this month as the countdown clockticks down to the merger on 1 October.

On both days special ceremonies were held atwhich honorary degrees were conferred onuniversity figures who had made a significantcontribution to the institutions over the yearsincluding Project Unity.This included the Vice-Chancellors of UMIST and VUM who receivedhonorary degrees from both universities attwo separate ceremonies.

The President-designate Professor Alan Gilbert was among the firstmembers of staff to pick up their new ID cards. Now all current staffon both campuses are being urged to collect theirs at special issuingevents being held from 29 September to 1 October.

vCJD test set togo to market

Researchers at the University who have been working to find a test to diagnose vCJD the human form of mad cowdisease, (BSE) have now taken the next step towards its commercialisation following successful trials.

Current UMIST staff should go to theEntrance Hall in the Main Building, SackvilleStreet and current VUM staff should go tothe Whitworth Hall, Oxford Road.

The events will run from 9.15am-5pm andstaff can turn up at any time on any day.Their old swipe cards will be swapped for

the new ones bearing the new Universitylogo and these will work in all accesscontrol and library systems on bothcampuses.

All staff will receive a blue ID card and thedefault validity period on all ID cards is setto five years, regardless of contract length.

Dr Pomfrett, said:”By diagnosing thedisease early enough and with the righttherapy, it is hoped that the disease canbe cured and ultimately eradicated.

“Although demand is expected to beworldwide, the largest market initiallywill be in the US where – unlike the UK –BSE is still a major problem in cattle and alive test is urgently needed.”

Manchester Innovation Limited – theuniversity’s incubator- is now taking thenext steps towards validation andcommercialisation of the testingequipment which is currently inprototype form, but it is hoped to releaseit onto the market next year.

As reported previously in This Week NextWeek, the team, based in the Departmentof Anaesthesia at Manchester RoyalInfirmary, have been refining the live testsince 2002 with Department of Healthfunding. The heart rate variabilitymonitor used for the current study wasinvented by one of the team, Dr. ChrisPomfrett and was originally developed in1991 to determine the depth of sedationin patients having surgery.

The new technology is used to detectheart irregularities which can suggest theearly stages of the disease in bothhumans and cattle. They are currently theonly team working on a live test for both,and recently published a paper in the

Veterinary Record demonstratingdetection of early signs of BSE in cattleincubating the disease, months beforeclassic symptoms were visible.

Although much research has been carriedout on the diagnosis of vCJD, the only teststhat are currently available are biopsies,which involve an anaesthetic, surgery anda stay in hospital. This new test is simpleand inexpensive and could be used by a GPor at home. Crucially, it could also be usedon blood donors, before they give blood.Research published by another group inThe Lancet last month, reveals that bloodcan still be infected with vCJD and goundetected, with the potential to pass onthe disease to recipients.

Twenty five of Europe’s top aerospaceengineering students took part in aworkshop hosted by the Victoria Universityof Manchester and BAe systems and sawtheir ideas tested by a jet pilot on the Schoolof Engineering’s flight simulator (pictured).

The EUROAVIA Design Workshop offersstudents the valuable opportunity towork in a multinational environment andget an insight into their future careers.

Their mission was to design an airbornesearch and rescue system over the threeweeks with the support and advice of

academics and industry specialists,culminating on the final day with apresentation of their design solutions toa panel of senior aerospace professionals.

EUROAVIA is the European Association ofAerospace Students and aims to getprofessionals and students in theindustry to interact with one another.

The workshop participants were selectedby entering EUROAVIA’s annual DesignCompetition held earlier this year whichrequired them to submit an essay on anaerospace topic.

The Queen’s Award for EnterprisePromotion will go to outstandingindividuals who promote entrepreneurship,from fostering novel methods of mentoringyoung business people to outstandingleadership in promoting entrepreneurshipas a career option.

Up to 10 Awards will be given annually

for enterprise champions and a possiblesingle Lifetime Achievement Award to anindividual judged to have made a trulyoutstanding contribution in this field.

People must be nominated for the Award,for instance by colleagues, associates orbeneficiaries of their work. The closingdate is 31 October.

SiteManager, the Content ManagementSystem (CMS) purchased for the singleUniversity, will be delivering asignificant web presence for the launchdate of 1 October and the developmentof many School, Service and Intranetsites is well under way.

A successful Open Forum was held by theCMS Project on 9 August wheredemonstrations were given of theoperationally diverse sites of the School ofEducation and Careers (part of Business,Careers and Community Division in theExternal Relations Directorate).

A new system which will allow non-technical staff to easily update University web pages and give usersaccess to a range of centrally-approved stored information on subjects such as student life andaccommodation, is making significant progress.

ORS Awards Scheme 2004

The combined total of Overseas Research Students (ORS) awards made tostudents from both universities was 65 this year, placing the singleUniversity in third place, behind Oxford and Cambridge, in terms of thenumbers of awards received.

Research

Academics from both universities were among more than 500 leadingmodern biologists from around the world who met in Manchester at thebeginning of the month to learn more about the latest developments inpost-genome science at the `Genome to Systems’ conference.

InternationalGenome Gathering

The conference was organised by theConsortium of Post-genome Science, across institutional initiative in the NorthWest, founded to acceleratedevelopments in this evolving researchfield. The conference covered a widerange of topics in genomics and

proteomics, from basic research to thecommercialisation of new technologies.

Among the speakers were ProfessorsSteve Oliver who gave a plenary speech;and Di Donnai from NoWGEN and fromUMIST: Professors John McCarthy,Douglas Kell and Simon Gaskell.

The awards are made annually, on acompetitive basis, to internationalpostgraduate research students ofoutstanding merit and potential. TheScheme was set up by the Secretary ofState for Education and Science in 1979to attract high quality students to theUK to undertake research. It isadministered by Universities UK onbehalf of the Department for Educationand Skills (DfES).

ORS awards offer international studentsthe opportunity to carry out a broad rangeof research at well-established UKacademic institutions of worldwiderecognition. ORS students make a valuablecontribution, not only to the Britishresearch base, but also to the economic,scientific, educational and other aspectsof life in their home countries.

The awards provide funding to pay thedifference between the internationalstudent fees and the home/EU student

fees charged by the academic institutionthat the student attends.

A new Centre for drug misuse information and research has beendeveloped from the former Drug Misuse Research Unit (DMRU) withinthe School of Epidemiology & Health Sciences.

A team of scientists in Manchester are hoping that a drug currently usedto treat high blood pressure could also successfully keep the brittle bonedisease, osteoporosis, at bay.

New National DrugEvidence Centre

Dr Daniela Riccardi, a senior lecturer inmolecular physiology in the School ofBiological Sciences, will be testing thetheory that drugs called thiazidediuretics, taken by elderly people withhigh blood pressure, can also increase theformation of new bone.

Dr Riccardi, and her colleague DrHoward Carter, a lecturer in dentalscience at the University, have beenawarded almost £90,000 over two yearsby the Arthritis Research Campaign, tocarry out the work.

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects onein three women, and one in 10 men overthe age of 50, and is particularly prevalentin post-menopausal women. Existingdrugs to re-build lost bone, althougheffective, all have side-effects.

"In addition, the drugs that are mostcommonly used to reduce high bloodpressure in elderly people, called loopdiuretics, generally make the bonesthinner," explained Dr Riccardi. "Wehave found that another class ofdiuretics, the thiazides, can lower blood

pressure and at the same time increasethe formation of new bone.

"Our purpose with this research is tounderstand the short and long-termeffects of these drugs on preventing boneloss, and to identify what gives the drugstheir protective effect."

The Manchester study will provideimportant information for doctors whotreat older patients with high bloodpressure and osteoporosis, and could meanthat patients need to take fewer drugs.

DrugTesting

Headed by Dr Michael Donmall, theNational Drug Evidence Centre (NDEC),will be responsible for the nationaltreatment analyses that are used by policymakers and Government strategists.

In recent years the Drug MisuseResearch Unit (DMRU) has led a numberof innovative investigations includingmajor studies on the outcome ofwaiting lists and the effectiveness ofcriminal justice and treatmentinterventions. It has also pioneered drug

treatment monitoring across the UKand Europe.

As well as continuing research activitiesand European/ United Nations priorities,NDEC will carry out work for theDepartment of Health’s NationalTreatment Agency (NTA) that willinclude investigations of treatmentengagement, effectiveness andretention, and the development of aNational Data Library.

Dr Donmall said:”Our new centralUniversity location will enable active linksto be developed and sustained with otherrelated departments within the Universitysuch as Epidemiology & Health Sciences,National Primary Care Centre, North WestCentre for Bio-Health Informatics,Psychiatry and Social Policy), facilitating ITcapability and encouraging seed-bedresearch and development initiatives.”

NDEC will be based at the ManchesterScience Park from October.

In separate celebrations, VUM staff wereinvited to attend an informal afternoontea party held in two sessions in a hugemarquee in the main quad with theVice-Chancellor Professor Sir MartinHarris and senior staff who met stafffrom a wide range of departments.

The UMIST Day of Celebration on 8September, was attended by well over1200 members of staff, past and present.

The events ranged from a buckingbronco to a nostalgic tour of the campus.

There were clowns, street artists,human table football and refreshmentsincluding a commemorative UMISTbeer. A highlight of the day was anauction of UMIST memorabiliaincluding ceremonial gowns whichraised more than £800 for UMIST’scharities – the Wood Street mission and

the Student Association’s charity, MarieCurie Cancer Care.

Guests were also able to view some rare andunseen documents as well as photographscharting UMIST through the ages in a specialexhibition in the Entrance Hall, put togetherby local Fine Arts student Rachael Smith.

Both days’ celebrations culminated inspecial Honorary Degree ceremonies forkey university figures, see page 16.

As the two universities prepareto come together, staff on eachcampustook the opportunity tocelebrate the individualinstitutions and theirachievements over the years –that’s 180 years at UMIST and153 years at the VictoriaUniversity of Manchester.

and was rejected by them all. Nothingdaunted, he went off climbing in the Alps- and picking up his mail one day in aremote poste restante in Switzerland, hefound a surprise late offer from themedical school at Aberdeen.

“It occurred to me that a six-year degreecourse meant six long summer vacations– and lots of time for climbing,” he says.“And Aberdeen was so close to the hills…”You can see what a pull those mountainswere – and still are.

So, Medicine it was. But even then hemanaged to squeeze in an intercalateddegree in Physiology and Physics on theway to his MB ChB. The six-year courseturned into seven – and he managed tofit in all those mountains, withexpeditions to Greenland, and the HinduKush, twice driving all the way toAfghanistan to climb.

He graduated in 1969, did his house jobsand completed his registration as amedical practitioner, and went on to doPhD work with Hans Kosterlitz, Professor ofPharmacology, who was a world authorityon the effects of morphine and opiatedrugs.“It was very exciting,” he says.“Hediscovered enkephalin, the first of theendorphins, and we were definingexperimentally the opiate receptor. He wasinspirational – and encouraging. I spentmost of my PhD work on finding out whatmorphine did to individual nerve cells

Now he is taking on the dual challenge ofbeing a Vice-President of this Universityand Dean of the research-driven Facultyof Life Sciences. Another mountain toclimb, another opportunity to aim for thepeak. And his no-nonsense approach iswell-grounded in academic andcommercial nous. “Entrepreneurship is animportant part of research,” he says.

His work has been centred around thequantitative understanding of drug andtransmitter action at the level of singlecells and single molecules, primarily bybiophysical and molecular biologicalapproaches. It has brought himinternational recognition, several prizesand awards, including Fellowships of theRoyal Society and of the Royal College ofPhysicians. And there’s the clue – he is byinclination a scientist who sort of strayedinto medicine, and a medic who turnedagain to his first love of Physics.

“It goes right back to school,” he says. “Iwas always interested in science,particularly Physics, but there wasparental pressure for me to be a doctor.”And he traces the inspiration of Physicsback to old “Nuffer” – more properly MrHoward Morris, Physics master at HeathGrammar School, Halifax. “He had amajor influence on me,” says Alan. “Somuch so, that I was all set to do Physics atCambridge.” Dutifully though, he appliedto do Medicine at three other places –

taken from the wall of the intestine. Theyprovided an accessible model before wewere able to use brain cells.”

He got his PhD in 1973, and after a year asa hospital registrar decided to seek acareer in research – and a phone call fromChicago changed his life. As luck wouldhave it, whilst doing his PhD he had spenta couple of summers learning how tomake microelectrode recordings at LoyolaUniversity in Chicago – and he got a calloffering him a job there. And that wasthe start of a distinguished academiccareer in the USA spanning 18 years.

Now, it’s strange how luck, allied to talentof course, shapes our lives: a phone callout of the blue (it happened again later),a chance meeting, the accident of timing.He arrived at Loyola, as AssistantProfessor of Pharmacology in 1975, to fillthe shoes of a distinguished Japanesephysiologist – and Alan inherited his laband his NIH grant. He enjoyed six happyand productive years there, beforemoving to MIT to become Professor ofNeuropharmacology, in the Departmentof Applied Biological Sciences.

Six years on, another invitation – to joinand help to establish a new researchinstitute, the now famous VollumInstitute of at the Oregon HealthSciences at Portland, Oregon. And Fateagain took a hand. The outstandingmolecular endocrinologist Ed Herbert,

Vice-Chancellor of the University ofSheffield to return to the UK and set up anew Institute of Molecular Physiology. Itwas enough to bring him back home toYorkshire. His wife, Annmarie Surprenant,also a top scientist, came to a Chair inCell Physiology, and he set aboutrecruiting a high-profile team. “I believein hiring the best possible people – andgiving them their heads,” he says.

That was in 1998. Now, six years on (is itjust chance that this six-year itch seemsto recur?), he is taking on anotherchallenge. “I realised that big things werehappening here and to be part of it is veryexciting,” he says. “I really believe that wecan build on the considerable foundationsyet also take the unique opportunityprovided by a new University. We havesome very distinguished researchers here,and we need a few more. When we geteverybody working together, there is nolimit to what we can achieve.”

His vision for the Faculty is a seamless,open-plan organisation, with no Schoolsand no departments, but with connectingsections, grouping people by theirinterests in the whole into three areas:Molecules to Cells; Cells to Tissues; andTissues to Organisms.

He will, of course, continue his ownresearch, bringing his own team and his£1million Wellcome grant. You wouldhardly expect otherwise of a man whoseextensive publications deal with drug andneurotransmitter receptors, structure andfunction of ion channels, the physiologyof the autonomic (particularly enteric)nervous system, pain mechanisms,psychoactive drugs and mental illness. Heis also President of the PhysiologicalSociety and Editor-in-Chief of the BritishJournal of Pharmacology.

But what about those other mountains?Worry not. Even as we speak, he is on thepoint of taking off for the Dolomites withhis younger son, eleven-year-old Adrian.

first Director of the Institute, diedsuddenly – and Alan played a key role insustaining the momentum of thefledgling institute.

“By this time, we were beginning work onopioid peptides and otherneurotransmitters, and had moved fromworking with neurons in the gut to neuronsin the brain,” he says.“We were looking atnerves involved in addictive behaviour andthe work was going extremely well. It wasalso a wonderful place to live – and veryhandy for the mountains.”

Significantly, with the influence of ayoung colleague, John Adelman, hisinterest shifted from the cellular to themolecular. They were the first to cloneseveral membrane proteins thatfunctioned as ion channels, and thusdeduce how the protein structure wasdetermining the channel function.

But then came another call – this time toleave academe and move into industry. “Ihad been consulting for Glaxo and Icouldn’t resist the opportunity to work inthe industry,” he says. “And the fact thatthe job was based in Geneva was quite abonus.” After those six summersclimbing in the Alps as a student, healready knew Switzerland very well. AsPrincipal Scientist at the GenevaBiomedical Research Institute, a divisionof GlaxoWellcome R&D, he led work ondrug action in nerve cells – and managed“a small, but very well-resourced, researchteam”. The team identified the molecularbasis of P2X family of receptors, which arenow key drug targets in alleviating painand inflammation.

It all came to an end in 1998, when thecompany restructured itself. The GenevaInstitute was one of the casualties. “Fromthe point of view of the management, Isaw the sense of the closure,” he says.“But it was a sad end and a lot of goodresearch-active people lost their jobs.”

So, there he was, in Geneva, out of a job,but not short of offers, in academe andindustry. Then another phone call – withan irresistible offer from Gareth Roberts,

Agreement. The pay and grading reformwould still have taken place in bothinstitutions if the universities had notbeen coming together. The impact ofUnity has been to provide an impetus tointroduce the reform sooner rather thanlater if possible because of the need forharmonisation of staff terms andconditions.

It is recognised that current pay andgrading schemes in the sector are over-complex, with little consistency in payranges between different staff groups.There is therefore no consistentframework against which equal pay forwork of equal value can be measured. Forthat reason, neither are the objectives ofopenness, transparency and fairness, northe need to recognise and rewardcontribution across all staff groups, ableto be fully promoted. The objective of anew pay and grading structure is topromote all these issues and ensure thatthe University is as flexible andcompetitive as it can be in this regard,given budgetary constraints.

Pay and grading reform is thereforeessential for the needs of the Universityin the achievement of its vision. The aimis that it will provide a much better toolfor the recruitment, retention and rewardof staff, and at the same time provide thelevel of transparency, fairness andflexibility that current arrangements lack.

3. Why is it desirable that harmonisationof pay and grading be implemented assoon as practicable?

The universities have different pay andgrading schemes for some categories ofstaff and different grade criteria for mostcategories. To simply transfer these tothe new institution would compoundthe current difficulties associated withpay and grading schemes in bothinstitutions and mean that there was notransparency or fairness in the pay andgrade attached to a post. As there willbe many new posts, and many in whichthe content changes considerably, theuse of existing arrangements wouldbecome even more problematic.

With effect from 1 October 2004, and insome cases significantly earlier than this,many staff will begin to work side by

side with colleagues who are paid moreor less than they are, with differentconditions of employment, whilstcarrying out identical roles. This willhighlight the inequities of existingstructures and remain a cause ofdiscontent as long as it is allowed tocontinue. For this reason alone, it isessential that a new harmonised pay andgrading structure is implemented soonerrather than later.

Furthermore, the national agreement tocreate new pay and grading structuresgives the new University a uniqueopportunity to design a reward strategythat enables it to work towards theambitious objective of becoming an“employer of choice” and to recruit andretain the best staff. This will, over time,provide real improvements to the rewardpackage for many staff.

Because of the scale of the exercise, itwill not be possible to implement theharmonisation of pay and grading by 1October 2004, although we are workinghard with the trade unions to bring earlybenefits of harmonisation to staff fromboth existing universities.

4. What progress has been made in theintroduction of a new pay and gradingscheme?

The University and the trades unionshave agreed to use the Higher EducationRole Analysis (HERA) job evaluationscheme to assess the size and relativitiesof posts in the new institution. Gradingarrangements for academic and relatedstaff will be in accordance with thenationally agreed Memorandum ofUnderstanding. Discussions are takingplace about the precise means by whichposts can begin to be assessed. TheUniversity is also examining the meansby which the new national 51-point payscale will be used in relation to grades,incremental scales, progressionarrangements and a generalreward/remuneration policy. To effectthis it is necessary to develop jobdescriptions for most posts in the newstructure, to develop and cost the variousoptions, and to consult with the tradeunions before this work can becompleted. In the meantime, the

The Unity project represents a timelyopportunity for us to introduce a newpay and grading system that is fair,transparent and represents best practicein our sector. This will be a key benefit ofthe Unity project and enable theUniversity to take a big step forwardtowards becoming an employer of choicein the higher education sector.

The design and implementation of thenew pay and grading structure willnecessarily take time, but we arecommitted to trying to bring the benefitsto all our staff as soon as practicable. Thispaper sets out in more detail thebackground to the new pay and gradingstructure and the implications for thetransfer of staff process.

2. Background

The Dearing (1997) and Bett (1999)Reports into Higher Education identifiedantiquated pay structures as a majorobstacle to achieving equal pay for workof equal value and to breaking downunjustifiable barriers between thevarious staff groups in the sectornationally. There are many arrangementscovering different groups of staff acrossthe sector and this is reflected in currentarrangements at the Victoria Universityof Manchester (VUM) and UMIST.

A national Framework Agreement for paystructure modernisation has been drawnup between all Higher Education tradeunions and employers. The Frameworkprovides a single national pay spine andscope for locally negotiated variations topay and grading structures attached tothe spine, to meet the differingcircumstances of individual institutions.Whilst this Framework will not be thecomplete solution to acknowledged payproblems in the sector, both universitiesare already committed to modernisingtheir pay structures and to addressingsome of the most obvious causes of payinequity across the institutions.

In addition, and in common with otheruniversities, Manchester and UMIST arealready receiving earmarked monies fromHEFCE to assist in investigating the reformof pay and grading and to implementother aspects integral to the Framework

appointment of staff to posts in the newstructure cannot be delayed if theUniversity is to be operational by 1October 2004.

5. Why will new posts in the University befilled without any indication of theassociated grading?

It has been decided that there will be noinformation released at all relating tograding for jobs in the new University atthis time and one of the purposes of thiscommunication is to explain therationale for this approach.

Three possible options were consideredregarding information that could beattached to future posts to indicate thegrades and/or associated level of pay:

• A grade on a new grading structure

• A grade based upon current gradesused in either VUM or UMIST

• An indicative salary range

5.1 Advertising new posts - with a gradeon a new grading structure

Members of the Project Unity JointUniversity Steering Group are currentlyholding discussions about the means ofdeveloping and introducing a newmethod of job grading (This Groupcomprises Personnel/HR and trade unionrepresentatives from both institutions). Itis therefore impossible to indicate agrade and an associated pay range atpresent. The University and trade unionrepresentatives are working to ensurethat a new grading scheme, and themeans by which it can be developed andintroduced, is agreed as soon as possible.

5.2 - with a grade based upon currentgrades used in VUM and/or UMIST

As explained in 3 above, this option is notfeasible because:

For continuing posts

• Where we do use the same gradingschemes, the existing universities havedifferent means of conductinggrading.

• For some categories of staff we useentirely different grading schemes.

For new or changed posts

• There would be no reasonable

justification for using grades orprocess from one University inpreference to the other

For all posts

• There would still be a need to move toa new harmonised pay and gradingscheme, so staff would still move to adifferent grade within a very shortspace of time.

5.3 - with an indicative salary range

In accordance with the nationalFramework Agreement for the HigherEducation sector, the University is aimingto use a 51-point pay spine as the basis ofthe pay to be attached to a new gradingscheme. This would involve indicating asalary range for a post on the new payspine, and the work required to achievethis will take some time. As yet, there isno new grade or grading schemeunderpinning the rate of pay, andtherefore we cannot provide anyaccurate salary indications.

However, recognising the need, for staffto have some indication as to what levelring-fenced and new posts are likely tobe in the structure, there will be anindication for such posts of theminimum and maximum salary range

which is likely to be offered, based on aconsideration of existing rates of pay.This will still not give a final indication offuture relativities, since the rangeindicated may be significantly widerthan the grade that is eventuallydetermined. This should, however, atleast allow staff to recognise someequivalence and draw comparisons withexisting grades.

University representatives are workinghard to ensure that the means by whichjob evaluation and associated pay gradescan be introduced are agreed at theearliest opportunity. In the meantime, wecan assure colleagues that their pay willbe protected in accordance with a policythat will be agreed with the trade unions.In addition, the job description, personspecification and the job’s place in theorganisation structure will help staffconsider their suitability for, and interestin a particular post. As soon as we are in aposition to tell you more in respect of thepay and grading to be attached to yournew job we will let you know.

Sir Martin came to VUM in 1992 fromthe University of Essex where he wasVice-Chancellor from 1987. Prior tothat he had been an academic atSalford University becoming Professorof Romance Linguistics and then Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Sir Martin wasknighted in 2000.

Professor Garside FREng has been at UMISTsince 1982 when he was appointedProfessor of Chemical Engineering. Sincethen, he has twice served as Head ofDepartment, as well as serving as VicePrincipal from 1985-87, and Pro ViceChancellor with responsibility for AcademicDevelopment from 1997. He was appointedPrincipal and Vice Chancellor in 2000.

At the VUM ceremony, Sir Martin waspresented by Christopher Kenyon formerPro Chancellor, who said in hiscitation:“….you will be remembered in theannals for the role that you have played,and that only you could have played, inbringing together two great institutions,each with its own proud traditions anddistinguished achievements, to form thenew University of Manchester with itsexhilarating potential for the future.”

Professor Garside’s citation, presented byProfessor David Gordon said: “He causedthe institution to examine its particularstrengths, and to think through the waysin which these might be preserved andenhanced for the future. His thinkingwas precisely in tune with that of theVictoria University of Manchester. Theoutcome is the new University that willcome into being on 1 October.”

Professor Sir Martin Harris, Vice-Chancellorof the Victoria University of Manchesterand Professor John Garside, UMIST Vice-Chancellor and Principal received honorarydegrees from both universities at the twoseparate ceremonies. They were bothmade Doctor of Laws by VUM and Doctorof Letters by UMIST.

Famous scientists, politicians and even celebrities have had building and streets named in their honour,but few can claim to have had a planet named after them. But for UMIST student Michael Oates that is exactlywhat has happened.

In honour of his discoveries, fellowastronomer Sebastian Hönig hasdonated a Minor Planet, also known asan asteroid, to Michael and aptly namedit ‘Michael Oates’.

Michael, an MSc EnvironmentalManagement & Technology student, is anamateur astronomer and a member ofthe Manchester Astronomical Societywhich meets at UMIST’s GodleeObservatory every week.

Over the last four years, Michael hasdiscovered an incredible 143 comets - aworld record - but has never had onenamed after him. The reason for this isthe way Michael makes his discoveries.

Michael’s planet is approximately fivekilometres in diameter, about a quarter ofthe size of Halley’s Comet. Asked if heplans to continue searching for comets,he says: “Definitely. Every comet I discoveris as exciting as the first.”

The Higher Education Funding Councilfor England (HEFCE) and the CareersResearch and Advisory Centre (CRAC)have announced the second round ofthe Higher Education Active CommunityFund (HEACF) Student VolunteeringAwards which is now open for entries.

The scheme aims to reward studentand staff volunteers who have shownsignificant commitment to or successin activities funded or initiated by theHigher Education Funding Council forEngland (HEFCE). The Awards also aim torecognise outstanding projects that havemet the objectives of the HEACF.

This year marks the launch of the Awardsfor higher education staff who, as part ofthe objectives of the HEACF, are activelyencouraged to participate in volunteeringprojects, building relationships betweenHEIs and their local communities.

UniLife caught up with Gemma duringthe 48-hour makeover in Hazel Grove.She said: “The first I knew about it waswhen Textiles lecturer Delia Vazquezsent me a note saying that thisparticular production company werelooking for students. I sent someexamples of my work and soon after

that they asked me to get involved.

“I’ve been tasked with designing andmaking new curtains for the property.The idea is that we give a facelift tothe front of the house, giving it morekerb appeal, so the curtains are animportant element.”

Looking Back

The Entrance Hall,UMIST

Sixty years ago UMIST’s EntranceHall was reserved for only thegrandest of occasions, andlooking at this picture it is easyto see why.

With its huge black and white marble floor,impressive red stone pillars, and intricatestain glass windows stretching the lengthof the room, this was one of the mostimpressive venues in the City. But whatreally set the room off were the statueswhich once lined each side of the room.

You will notice six white statues on eachside of the room leading up to a lone

statue at the top of the stairs. Each one isstood on a large black plinth looking intothe centre of the room.

The exact date these statues wereremoved from the Entrance Hall is notknown, but rumour has it thatstudent’s attempts to make their owncreative ‘additions’ to these statues ispartly to blame!

When Ken joined the service in 1983 he wasissued with a flashlight, a pushbike andsent out on patrol. There were no cameras,computers or complex communicationssystems to lend a helping hand.

“ When I first came here it was very mucha night watchman’s job. You went outchecked doors and windows, you had anold six-volt torch and very old-fashionedcommunications. The service at that timewas in its infancy and it has since comeon dramatically,” says Ken.

Nowadays things are very different. TheUniversity operates a complex network ofmore than 100 CCTV cameras across thecampus, security staff wear armouredvests, and pushbikes have long beenreplaced by patrol cars.

Ken is at the heart of the operation and isone of four Senior Security Supervisors,who in shifts share responsibility forsecurity across the main campus and theUniversity-owned halls of residence inVictoria Park and Fallowfield.

Over the years he’s come up against ahost of characters and situations. He’seven dealt with fires and car crashes oncampus, but that’s never put him offdoing the job.

“ The University is a city within a city andwe encounter every form of problem frombreak-ins to cycle thefts,” he says.

“ What attracted me to the job is thefact that it’s not a nine to five. You don’tknow from day-to-day what you aregoing to encounter. It might beunpleasant, or pleasant, but that’s whatmakes it interesting. Every shift is afresh canvas.”

On a typical shift Ken is in charge of 15security officers. He is also responsiblefor the control room, located in thedepths of the Precinct Shopping Centre,which is where CCTV footage ismonitored and the team’scommunications network is housed.

His shifts alternate between night andday, with him working three days on

and three days off, and when he’s notmonitoring the control room he’s outon patrol.

“We are very much out on the streets. It isimportant that people do see us, and thatif somebody has a problem they feel theycan approach us. We are there to deterpeople from committing crime, but we arealso there to give information and advice.”

There’s also a lighter side to Ken’s job, andwhen he’s not out catching criminalsyou’ll often find him at the University’sVIP events – providing security of course.He’s covered events for Charles andDiana, Gordon Brown and The HighCommissioner of India, but ask him whathe loves most about his job and it is notmeeting celebrities, but where he works.

“ I love the University. People used to saythat I wore the t-shirt, and I do.”
