We have new directors

Dave and Matt contrib-

by honouring their ser-

I am particularly thankful

All of you are aware of

the recent changes in

our club. This has been

an intense period of ac-

tivity as a result of those

changes. I am pleased to

report that our team has

made significant progress

Moving forward, there are

two major priorities which I

and your executive are focus-

ing on. The first is club activi-

ties and the second, our posi-

tion on the breeding regula-

tions.

CLUB ACTIVIES

Primarily this is about commu-

nication and the enjoyment of

our DK’s either in hunting or

testing situations. Sharing

those experiences through

participation promotes new

friendships. That strengthens

club bonds and ensures abso-

lute success in the future. I

am certain we can do that.

BREED ISSUES

We have our position on that.

It’s a simple position. We are

DK, we breed DK to DK.

That is why we are here. It’s

what we do and our position

is not negotiable. What oth-

ers do we can not control

but through reasoned debate

and well thought out re-

sponses we can influence the

final decision. The decision

makers are the DKV and in

that regard I will be in Fulda

to present our opinion in

person.

Membership renewals are

the life of our club. I urge all

of you to make this a prior-

ity. Renewals are going well

to date and as an incentive

the late fee is waived.

My best to you all for the

future. I owe my best ef-

forts because of the support

given to me. I promise that

to you.

Vice-President

Director of Testing

Greetings and congratulations to all of those members that tested dogs this past fall! The club

hosted five tests with a total of 19 dogs tested. The VCDKK Test Results are included in this

newsletter.

In addition the club hosted three Zuchtshau’s with thirteen dogs being evaluated for conforma-

tion. The club hosted its first VGP in Union, MO with three dogs being tested, all receiving a pass-

ing score.

This falls testing included a very special AZP performance by Karre Leishman and his DK Flocke

vom Kronsberg. Flocke received a 4H (Excellent) rating in nose, search and pointing. Congratula-

tions to Karre and Flocke!

For those of you who tested in Solms/AZP this fall, I encourage you to continue training and test

your DK in the (VGP) utility test. Training and testing for VGP will be a very challenging and re-

warding experience for both you and your dog.

A special thank you to the Test Coordinators, Judges, Test Hosts, and everyone else who helped

make the fall tests happen. Your commitment and dedication to the DKV and JGHV testing sys-

tems is very much appreciated.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are thinking about hosting a test in 2008. This

includes both spring and fall tests. If you have any questions about tests or the testing system, feel

free to contact me.

It is an honor to have been asked to serve as your Vice-President until formal elections are held.

Happy New Year!

P A G E 8

T H E “ V E R S A - T E L L ”

Greetings fellow Hunters,

As many of you already know, in October Matt Oaks decided to pass on the baton and step down from his position

as VCDKK Secretary/Treasurer. Matt has been a dedicated servant to the Deutsch Kurzhaar and both the VCDKK

and the NADKC for more years than he would probably want me to mention.

Over the years, Matt has offered impeccable leadership, unparalleled knowledge and improved upon everything he

has touched with respect to the Deutsch Kurzhaar. He has offered training expertise and encouragement to un-

countable DK handlers including me.

Matt continues to support the VCDKK and the Kurzhaar and will also continue to judge our tests and participate in

DK events. If you have an opportunity to speak with Matt, you should take a second to thank him for all he does and

has done for the DK.

In order to fill our clubs immediate need for a Secretary/Treasurer I have volunteered my help in an effort to keep

things moving along smoothly with respect to club finances.

I’m pleased to report that we have finalized our 2008 operating budget and have ended 2007 in the black.

So that the transition is seamless Vanita Skinner has stepped up to take over my responsibilities for the News Letter.

I am confident that Vanita will do a great job at it. Remember in order for us to have a great News Letter we need

your participation too.

We are still in the process of getting the kinks out of the website software and we have made some progress over

the last month. We know this is the main pipeline for providing you information and our intention is to do a better

job at it in the coming year.

I hope some of you will step up and offer your help as we move forward in 2008. There is a lot to do and too few to

do it the way we would all like it done; so please give us a hand if you can. Suggestions are always welcome but help

is nice too.

For your review, I have provided a spread sheet that indicates what our approximate revenues and expenses were in

2007. The spreadsheet also indicates our current cash on hand at the close of 2007.

If you have any questions regarding the information in the spread sheet or the budget for the upcoming year or just

want to talk dog or hunting, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Good Hunting,

Gary W. Fleming

Zuchtwart Report

I would like to wish a Happy New Year to all of you. I hope all of our members have enjoyed some good times with their

DK’s pursuing and hunting game.

Our fledging club got off the ground in the last year due the hard work and dedication of many.

I personally would like to thank all involved in making our litters, training days, and tests happen.

I anticipate that with the unique dedication, energy and vision of our members our club will continue to grow

and prosper to promote, protect and foster the DK and the German testing system in North America.

Within the past year I am proud to announce we have had our club’s first litter, had members register kennel

names with the DKV and processed JGHV hunting certificates for our members.

The first litter bred for VCDKK was breeder Alfred “Fritz” Hartkopf “A” litter kennel von East River of Perrysburg,

Ohio USA. Congratulations to Fritz on producing the first litter for our new club.

I would also like to congratulate Jorg Kaltenegger on his “B” King’s Crossing Litter (our club’s 2nd litter regis-

tered) and wish all members good luck with their puppies.

I hope the breeders have informed the puppy owners about the DK system, our club, and will strongly support,

and encourage them to train, and test their pups in the German testing system.

VCDKK is proud to announce 3 new kennels named, as mentioned earlier von East River Alfred “Fritz” Hart-

kopf of Perrysburg, Ohio USA, vom Sturmland Gary Fleming of Tallahassee, FL USA and vom Feuersteinfluss Shane Cook

of Meridianville, AL USA. At this time, we await approval from the DKV Zuchtbuchstelle for Karre Leishman’s request

for his new kennel name. Good luck and best wishes for your new kennels!

It is my hope in the future that more VCDKK members test their DKs and achieve breeding status, so that we

can begin to establish new DK bloodlines within our club.

The VCDKK encourages our breeders to place their puppies with prospective hunting/ testing homes. It is im-

portant to remember the DK is first and foremost a hunting dog, and placing pups in hands of ethical hunters should be

of utmost importance to the breeder.

In closing I would like to mention that all breeding questions and or concerns might be directed to my office. I

will do my best to address any questions and/or concerns, along with handling the processing of your HD x-rays and HN

(Hartenachweis) requests.

Please check with me prior to submitting request for applicable forms and current costs. The Euro dictates VCDKK's

current fees, and it is always possible for fees to change.

I wish you much success in training, testing, hunting and in breeding with your DK’s.

waidmannsheil und Kurzhaar voran,

Tom Skinner

VCDKK HIP CERTIFICATION

Information, which must be permanently marked on radiograph:

Name of dog: ___________________________________________

Tattoo number: ___________________________________________

Date of birth (day.month.year): ___________________________________________

Date of x-ray (day.month.year): ___________________________________________

Desirable information to include: owner's name; clinic logo

Correct radiograph:

A. Includes entire pelvis and stifles (knees)

B. Note that femurs (thigh bones) are parallel, and that patellae (knee caps, b) are centered over the joint, indicating correct

positioning of the dog.

C. Note that openings (one large, two small) in the pelvis are symmetrical in shape, indicating correct rotational placement

of the dog.

D. Note that right and left markers are placed in the radiograph, for reference.

E. Note that the identification information (example below) is permanently placed on the radiograph.

See next page……..

T H E “ V E R S A - T E L L ”

P A G E 1 0

(Radiograph procedure, continued)

Concerning the radiograph procedure:

1. If your dog is in heat, consider delaying the radiographic procedure. During the estrus (heat) cycle, pelvic ligaments

may be somewhat relaxed, which could possibly result in a diagnosis of hip dysplasia in a dog, which is actually normal. (This

has happened recently, and radiographs were re-submitted at a later date and the dog was found to be HD-free)

2. EXPECT your dog to be sedated. You cannot obtain quality radiographs without sedation. There are reversible seda-

tives available, and the dog can walk out of the clinic 15 minutes after the procedure is completed.

3. Before you present your dog for the procedure, take him out for a walk, so he can empty his bowels before the radio-

graphs are taken. A better radiograph will be the result.

4. Print this form out, fill in the required information yourself, and present it to your veterinarian, so that there will be no

question as to the requirements for the radiograph, and so that the dates will be entered in the proper (European) fashion.

5. Review the radiograph with your veterinarian before you leave (hopefully, before the sedation is reversed), to ensure

that everything is as it should be.

Mail radiograph, ORIGINAL ahnentafel, and check or money order (made out to VCDKK) to:
