THE VEILED
Prologue
O believers! Fear Allah as He should be feared and die not but as true Muslims.
O mankind! Have fear of your Lord, the One who created you from a single soul,
from that soul He created its mate, and through them He spread countless men and
women. Fear Allah, the One in whose name you demand your rights from one another
and the ties of relationship; surely Allah is watching you very closely.
O believers! Fear Allah and always say the right thing; He will bless your works
and forgive your sins - for he that obeys Allah and His Rasool, has indeed achieved
the highest achievement.

I seek refuge in Allah, from shaytan, the accursed, in the name of Allah, the
Beneficent, the Merciful. All adorations and thanks are due to Allah, who destined us
conscious Muslims, without which we would not have been among those who know
their duties and responsibilities to the Creator.
He whom Allah guides is rightly guided; but he whom He lets go astray, you will
find no guardian to lead him to the Right Way.
I seek the choicest of all benedictions on the noble soul of our prophet and master
Muhammad (SAW), members of his household, companions and all those who follow
the path of rectitude till the day of reckoning.
Introduction
The veiled, in the context of this talk, refers to those who are willingly oblivious of the
laws of Allah (SWT). They rejected Allahs directives and relied on other than this for
guidance. In the Quraan 7: 30;
To one group He has guided while the other group deserved to be left in error due to
their own choice; for they took the shayaatin (evil ones) for their protectors instead of
Allah yet they think that they are guided. The Prophet, regarding this, in a Hadith
states;
All people go out in the morning and sell themselves, and some of them free
themselves while some others destroy themselves. And in the two Sahihs:

As for those among you who are among the people of happiness, they will be
facilitated to perform the deeds of the people of happiness. As for those who are
among the miserable, they will be facilitated to commit the deeds of the miserable.
(Bukhari and Muslim).
And in the Quraan 2: 6-7, Allah says;
In fact, as for those who reject faith; it is the same, whether you warn them or youdon't, they will not believe. Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, their eyes
are covered, and there is a grievous punishment for them. Al-Qurtubi said, "The
Ummah has agreed that Allah has described Himself with sealing and closing the
hearts of the disbelievers, as a punishment for their disbelief. Similarly, Allah said
(Quraan 4:155),
...Nay, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief''. He then
mentioned the Hadith about changing the hearts, in which the Prophet supplicated;
O You Who changes the hearts, make our hearts firm on Your religion.
To espouse the concept of veil to this talk, as conceived by the organisers, Allah
(SWT) says in the Quraan 36: 8-9;
7/30/2019 The Veiled
4/11
We have put yokes round their necks right up to their chins so their heads are raised
up. And We have put a barrier in front of them and a barrier behind them, and then We
have covered (veiled) them over so they cannot see. It is the same for them whether
you warn them or warn them not, they will not believe.
To the quote And We have put a barrier before them, Mujahid said it means
between them and the truth. And a barrier behind them, i.e. between them and the
truth so they are confused. Qatadah said, "They move from one form of misguidance
to another.''
And We have covered them up, means We have blinded their eyes to the truth.'
So that they cannot see. Meaning, they cannot benefit from goodness or be guided
to it. Allah placed this barrier between them and Islam and Iman, so that they will
never reach it,'' and he recited:
-
Truly, those, against whom the Word (wrath) of your Lord has been justified, will notbelieve, Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment.
(Quraan 10:96-97).
Characteristics of the Veiled Ones
* As for these veiled ones, their characteristic is that they worship Allah, as it were, at
convenience. Allah says regarding them in Quraan 22:11;
7/30/2019 The Veiled
5/11
There are some people who worship Allah standing on the verge of faith (half faith
and half disbelief). When such a person is blessed with good fortune he is content; but
if he encounters a trial he turns back headlong; thus losing both this world and the
Hereafter, which is a clear-cut loss.
* These people are also characterised by utmost disbelieved in Allah; they opined that
their freedom can not be mortgaged for belief in Allah. They feel they should be free to
express their freedom by listening to their own wishes. Allah says regarding them in
Quraan 25: 43-44:
Have you ever seen the one who has taken his own desires as his god? Would you
take the responsibility of guiding him? Or do you think that most of them listen or try to
understand? They are nothing but animals - nay, they are even further off track!Ibn Kathir said for such a person, it means whatever he admires and sees as good in
his own desires becomes his religion and hence his way; just like Allah says in
Quraan 35:8;
Is he, to whom the evil of his deeds is made fair seeming; so that he considers it as
good. Verily, Allah sends astray whom he wills They are worse than grazing cattle.
Cattle only do what they were created to do, but these people were created to worship
Allah Alone, but they worship others with Him, even though evidence has been
established against them and Messengers have been sent to them.
* Another characteristic of these people is that when they claim to be part of the
believers, they practice selective obedience. In essence, they only do what Allah
command believers to do when it suits their purposes; they single themselves out from
injunctions they do not like. Regarding that Allah says in Quraan 2: 85;
7/30/2019 The Veiled
6/11
Do you believe in a part of your Holy Book and reject the rest? So what other
punishment do such people among you, who behave like this, deserve, than disgrace
in this world and to be driven to grievous punishment on the Day of Judgment? Allah
is not unaware of what you do.Then, there are people who despise those who have sincere believe in Allah and even
discourage others from believing. Regarding them Allah says in Quraan 2: 13;
When it is said to them: Believe as the others believe they sarcastically ask: Should
we believe like fools? Be aware! They are the fools, if only they could understand.
Ibn Kathir said when Allah told them "Believe as the people believe'', it meant `Believe
just as the believers believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers,
Resurrection after death, Paradise and Hellfire, etc. And obey Allah and His
Messenger by heeding the commandments and avoiding the prohibitions.' Yet they
answer by saying, "Shall we believe as the fools have believed'' referring to theCompanions of the Messenger of Allah as fools. This is the same Tafsir given by Abu
Al-`Aliyah in his Tafsir, with a chain of narration to Ibn `Abbas, Ibn Mas`ud and other
Companions. They said, "Us and them having the same status, following the same
path, while they are fools?!''
Some of them claim to obey Allahs injunctions but not that of the Rasool (SAW).
Hence, they distinguished between Allah and his Apostle in terms of what or who to
follow. Allah said about them in Quraan 4: 150-151;
7/30/2019 The Veiled
7/11
Those who deny Allah and his Rasool and those who intend to draw a line between
Allah and His Rasools saying: "We believe in some, and reject the rest" - desiring to
take a middle way between belief and unbelief - these are the real unbelievers and
We have prepared for such unbelievers a humiliating punishment.
Here, Allah threatens those who disbelieve in Him and in His Messengers, who
differentiate between Allah and His Messengers regarding faith. They believe in some
Prophets and reject others, following their desires, lusts and the practices of their
forefathers. They do not follow any proof for such distinction, because there is no such
proof. Rather, they follow their lusts and prejudices.
Some would not follow what they consider Sunnah. To them Allah says in Quraan
4:115;
Anyone who is
hostile to the
Rasool after
guidance has
been plainly conveyed to him and follows a path other than that of the believers, We
shall leave him in the path he has chosen and cast him into Hell; which is an evil
refuge.
Ibn Kathir comments that this refers to those who intentionally take a path other than
the path of the Law revealed to the Messenger, after the truth has been made clear,
apparent and plain. And follows other than the believers' way refers to a type of
conduct that is closely related to contradicting the Messenger. This contradiction could

be in the form of contradicting a text of the Qur'an or Sunnah or contradicting what the
Ummah of Muhammad has agreed on. The Ummah of Muhammad is immune from
error when they all agree on something, a miracle that serves to increase their honour,
due to the greatness of their Prophet. There are many authentic Hadiths on this
subject. Allah warned against the evil of contradicting the Prophet and his Ummah.
We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell --- what an evil
destination meaning, when one goes on this self-chosen path, We will punish him by
making the evil path appear good in his heart, and will beautify it for him so that he is
tempted further.
Allah said elsewhere;
Then leave Me Alone with such as belie this Quraan. We shall punish them gradually
from directions they perceive not, and also
So when they turned away (from the path of Allah), Allah turned their hearts away
The Way of the Believers
Allah does not leave us in darkness regarding the way expected of the believers. In
the Quraan 30: 30;

Therefore, stand firm in your devotion to the upright faith - the nature made by Allah,
the one on which mankind is created - and the laws of Nature ordained by Allah
cannot be changed. That is the standard of true faith, but most among mankind do not
know. Turn in repentance to Him, fear Him, establish Salah (regular five times daily
prayers) and do not be of the mushrikin. Those who divide their religion into sects and
become separate groups, each group rejoicing in its own circle.
"The Messenger of Allah said:
No child is born except in a state of Fitrah, then his parents make him a Jew or aChristian or a Zoroastrian, just as each animal produces a perfect animal like itself --
do you see any among them that are born mutilated. Then the narrator (Abu
Hurayrah) recited this Ayah;
Allah's Fitrah with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Allah's
Khalq, that is the straight religion''. This was also recorded by Muslim.
The following constitutes what makes a good believer according to the listed Hadiths;
A. Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five
(principles):
1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is
Allah's Apostle.
2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly.
3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .
4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.
Transmitted by Bukhari (Volume 1, Book 2, Number 7)
B. Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts).
And Haya (This term "Haya" covers a large number of concepts which are to be
taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and
compunction etc.) is a part of faith." (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 8)
7/30/2019 The Veiled
10/11
C. Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "A Muslim is the one who avoids
harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one
who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden." (Bukhari Volume 1, Book
2, Number 9). In a similar circumstance, Abu Musa narrated: Some people asked
Allah's Apostle, "Whose Islam is the best? (i.e. Who is a good Muslim)?" He (SAW)
replied, "One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands."
D. Narrated Anas: The Prophet (SAW) said, "None of you will have faith till he wishes
for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2,
Number 12).
E. Narrated Anas: The Prophet (SAW) said, "Whoever possesses the following three
qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle (SAW) becomes dearer than anything
else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.
3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the
fire."
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 15.
Conclusion
Allah says in Quraan 57: 7;
for those of you who believe and spend in charity shall be richly rewarded. What is
the matter with you that you do not believe in Allah, whereas the Rasool is inviting you
to believe in your Rabb, Who has indeed taken your covenant, if you are true men of
faith?
Allah encourages having faith and spending in acts of obedience. When he says "what
prevents you from believing, while the Messenger is among you calling you to faith
and bringing forward clear proofs and evidences that affirm the truth of what he
brought you''.
The Messenger of Allah asked his Companions,
7/30/2019 The Veiled
11/11
Who do you consider among the believers as having the most amazing faith. They
said, "The angels.'' He said,
And what prevents them from believing when they are with their Lord They said,
"Then the Prophets.'' He said,
What prevents them from believing when the revelation comes down to them. They
said, "Then us.'' He said,
What prevents you from believing, when I am amongst you. Actually, the believers
who have the most amazing faith, are some people who will come after you; they will
find pages that they will believe in. This is explaining Allah's statement in Surat Al-
Baqarah, which extolled the place of believers in the unseen.
Those who believe in the Ghayb (unseen). (Quraan 2:3)
Allah expects that everyone should conform to real faith. And should not be
haphazard in their focus of belief as displayed by the veiled ones.
Finally, Allah says in Quraan 18: 110;
Tell them (O Muhammad): "I am but a human being like you; the revelation is sent to
me to declare that your God is One God; therefore, whoever hopes to meet his Rabb,
let him do good deeds and join no other deity in the worship of his Rabb."
