There may be no process that plays a greater role in the symptomatic state and response to treatment in the chiropractic practice than that of inflammation. The older theory of the inflammatory process assumed that it was a state that primarily “burns itself out”. While emerging science has replaced that concept with the knowledge that the process is more one of transitioning from the inflammatory state to a pro-resolving/anti-inflammato-ry state, clinical practice has been slow to change management strategies. There is now good evidence that the common prac-tice of blocking inflammatory drivers such as the COX enzymes actually prevents this transition of the pro-resolving/anti-inflamma-tory state. The ongoing or longer-term use of these COX enzyme-inhibiting agents has been termed “resolution toxic” and they con-tribute to progressive degeneration. The role of inflammation in neuromusculo-skeletal disorders and most chronic disease is increasingly important. Changing lifestyle patterns and population aging disturb the pro/anti-inflammatory balance. This course examines in detail the temporal relationship of the pro and anti-inflammatory states and

SATURDAY KEYNOTEProgress in Neuroscience:A Chiropractor’s Dream

Dr. Heidi Haavik, a chiropractor and PhD-trained neurophysiologist, is one of the most popular chiropractic speakers in the world today. Director of Research at the New Zea-land College of Chiropractic, Dr. Haavik is best known for her ground-breaking research on the impact of chiropractic adjustments on the brain and central nervous system. What is becoming clear from scientific studies is that spinal dysfunction negatively impacts brain function, and that chiropractic adjust-ments can reverse this. One particular part of the brain that we now know we impact when we adjust the spine is the prefrontal cortex. This literally is the Chiropractor’s Dream, be-cause the prefrontal cortex is vital for one’s intelligence, movement control, pain pro-cessing, mental health, immune system and inflammation (thus most chronic diseases)! In this hour Dr. Haavik will present an amaz-ing overview of the most current chiropractic neuroscience. She will also review the “three pillars” of an Evidence Based Practice model, what it looks like in a chiropractic setting, and how the most recent chiropractic neurosci-ence fits into this model.

all of the factors involved in preventing and triggering this important transition. C-19 & its Effects on Your PracticeDrs. Dean and Jen DePice will equip you with tangible tools to empower yourself to dispel myths, evaluate evidence and grow through the pandemic by sharing and applying mean-ingful information out in your community. By participating in this virtual forum, you will experience solidarity and master strategies that heal “the most common pathology seen in caring for patients [which] is not heart dis-ease and diabetes but loneliness.” (Former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy)Chiropractic is in Dr. Jen DePice’s heart. Trained as an exercise physiologist from Wake Forest University, she was led to chi-ropractic by her mom just as she was to start a Masters in Physical Therapy. Chiropractic for her is all about the principles of above, down, inside out. She has loved everything about spending the past 20 years adjusting in practice with Dr. Dean. She even adjusted up until the delivery dates of their three children with all the births at home and the last under water. Dr. Jen loves bringing chiropractic to life in patients’ lives -- and helping you to do the same! Dr. DePice has practiced chiropractic since 1987. His college majors in chemistry and bi-ology, combined with his lifelong experience and knowledge of chiropractic, have shaped a doctor who pursues knowledge with a bal-anced focus on the practical application of science and philosophy on patient outcomes. Building team driven practices, cash practic-es and lifetime care are all cornerstones of TLC coaching. Dr. DePice excels at under-standing and inspiring patients and doctors alike with his clear approach.

ing the number of years they are able to be active and do what they love. He specializes in working with athletes and aiding them in injury risk management, rehabilitation, and sports performance.

This course teaches Chiropractic techniques for the feet, ankles, TMJ and some upper cervical. To this end, anatomy, common clin-ical conditions, and discernable patterns of subluxation are covered. The importance of the feet for whole-body stability is one of the core concepts of the class material. When the arches of the feet have problems resulting in them being too flat or too high, the body undergoes stress patterns, and a multitude of clinical ailments may occur. This class teaches the student how to analyze the patient, look for subluxation patterns, treat them, and help their patients with home and lifestyle care. It involves hands-on examina-tion/evaluation, adjusting, and exercise pro-cedures throughout the course.Ever since Dr. Kevin graduated from Palmer West in 1996 as Valedictorian of his class and a recipient of a “Clinical Excellence Award”, he has been striving to achieve and main-tain the highest standards for his practice. In 2004, the Contra Costa Sun Newspaper vot-ed Dr. Kevin the best Chiropractor in Lam-orinda. In 2008, and again in 2009, KRON 4 Television nominated Dr. Kevin for “The Best of The Bay” in the Chiropractic category.

Evidence-Based Chiropractic Practice Rocks!

Drs. Heidi Haavik and Monika Buerg-er team up to present the true meaning of Evidence-Based Chiropractic Practice by walking you through the Science, Applica-tion and Communication of topics relevant to the chiropractic profession. This will in-clude making clinical decisions with indi-vidual patients by discussing the current research evidence on the topics relevant to their health concerns, discussing your own clinical experience on this same topic, and discussing your patient’s own wishes and wants. Making clinical decisions according to these three equally important ‘pillars’ is true evidence-based chiropractic practice. Dr. Haavik will share with you the research evidence, Dr. Buerger will share with you the relevant clinical experience, and together they will help you effectively communicate this with the patient. They will also give you clinical pearls for how to find out what is important to your patient for optimal com-pliance and outcomes. Doctors Heidi and Monika will go through several practice rele-vant topics, such as how the brain perceives sensory information, how the spine impacts this, and how this may present in patients of all ages walking into your office every day. They will also cover the negative impact of stress and trauma on health and wellbeing and the importance of the microbiome in the neurobiology of disease and development.

Ms. Hudson recognizes that your doctor’s dual responsibility of being a business own-er and chiropractor can leave the doctor – and you - feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and falling behind. Costs are going up. Re-imbursements are down for certain services. Challenges with billing, coding, and compli-ance are never-ending. Implementing five simple steps in your office can help your practice and your team become more effi-cient, improve workplace satisfaction, and stop wasting time on the things that don’t have a positive impact on your practice.Patient-centered care and patient engage-ment are the central components of a mod-ern-day chiropractic office. In her second session, Ms. Hudson recognizes that while the concept of “patient engagement” may not be new, what is new is the significant role that technology is having on patient en-gagement. We are living in a connected and engaged society. The Internet allows us to get what we want on-demand at our finger-tips. Patients and consumers have started placing these same expectations on health-care.Kristi Hudson is the Director of Special Proj-ects for ChiroHealthUSA and Administrator for the ChiroHealthUSA Foxworth Family Scholarship. She helps educate chiroprac-tors and their staff on compliance issues related to faulty financial policies. She has been a guest lecturer for events hosted by Breakthrough Coaching, KMC University, Physician’s Business Solutions, and the Stu-dent ACA. She enjoys working with state as-sociations, ChiroCongress, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, and the Clinical Compass to provide educational awareness on changes within the profession. Since 2012, she has facilitated and managed one of the largest-running weekly webinar se-ries within the profession.
