WHAT ARE THE UTILITY PROGRAMS?Utility program is a type of system software. It is used to analyze, maintain and configure computer system.

For instance Cleanup of Disks, Detecting and Removing of viruses and spies, restoring files and space analyses are some functions of Utility Programs

These Programs are classified as described under:

(A)Utility Programs which are included with Windows Operating System(B)Utility Programs that are not installed by default in Windows Operating

System

Some Utility Programs are given below:

1-ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS:These programs are widely used to remove viruses. At first they scan the storage media and find out the threats. After that by the help of special commands viruses are deleted form storage disks. These programs are very useful to safe precious data from losses.

Norton Anti-Virus, PC Clean, Nod32, Dr. Web and eSafe are some popular Virus Removers.

2-PERSONAL FIREWALL:This utility program is used to protect a computer which is connected to internet, from hackers. Mostly DSL or Cable-Modem users use it.

Examples: McAfee Personal Firewall and Windows Firewall

3-SPYWARE REMOVER Spy ware are programs collect personal information about a user or the computer information such as username, password, E-mail address, credit card number etc., and send it to the internet and the spyware removers are removes these spyware programs.

Microsoft Windows Anti-spyware 2005 Beta and PestPatrol are the examples of spyware Removers.

4-INTERNET FILTERSInternet filters are used to block an undesirable content on the Internet. The contents which are blocked by internet filters are may be a virus and advertisements etc.

5-FILE MANAGER:File manager is used to arrange and manage files on the disks. It is included with Microsoft windows and it is upgraded in every version of windows.

6-FILE COMPRESSIONThese programs are used to compress a file. After compression the size of file is reduced and many files are collected in such a way that the resultant of the files will also be a file(not a folder)

WinRAR and WinZip are the examples of File compressors.

7-BACKUPBackup utility is installed in every version of M S windows. This utility restores the files by creating back-up of the files to be restored. It is very helpful to recover essential files and data.

8-CD/DVD BURNINGThis utility is used to writing the CD-R’s or Recordable DVD’s. Text, graphics, audio and video is written with the help of burning programs.

9-SEARCH UTILITY:This program locates the files and folders or even people. It can search a file when a phrase or words are given in search box by the user.

10-IMAGE VIEWERImage viewer displays, edits and prints the image files including pictures and photos. It also sorts the images.

This utility also enables Album view or slide view to see photos or pictures.

11-DISK SCANNER:

Disk scanner reads error to optimize the use of computer system. It repairs the errors which are the cause of stopping the programs. It starts system memory to check and correct errors.

12-DIAGNOSTIC UTILITY:The diagnostic utility is used to explain, recognize and analyze hardware/software faults in computer system

13-DISK DEFRAGMENTER:Disk defragmenter is used to rearrange the fragments of files. It stores the file fragments next to each other. System speed is increase due to Defragmentation.

14-SCREEN SAVERS:It is used to show a moving image or blank screen when the mouse or keyboard are not used for a certain time when the computer is on. A password can also be set in screen sever tab.
