Key words: Incidental Vocabulary Learning through Reading, Vocabulary.

Vocabulary is sum of list or collection words arranged by alphabetical order

to produce sentences. Vocabulary mastery is one of importance components of

language that support the people to master the language. One of the strategies in

teaching vocabulary is incidental vocabulary learning through reading.

The objectives of the research is to find out wheater or not there is a

significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students

of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught

by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading.

The design of of this research is experimental research by using one group

pre test and post test design.This experiment is applied to the eight grade students

of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus and the sample is the students of VIIIC. In this research,

the writer gives the students a pre test then continue by implementation of

teaching vocabulary by using incidenral vocabulary learning through reading.

The result of this research can be seen from the pre test and post test result.

The pre test result of the mean is 75.1 and standard deviation is 8.89. it means that

the vovabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in

academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using incidental vocabulary

learning through reading is low. Meanwhile, on the post test result the mean is

88.7 and standard deviation is 8.5. So, the result of the vocabulary mastery after

being taught by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading of the eighth

grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 is good. The

hypothesis is accepted in the level of significance 0.05 (5%) is 2.042 and the

degree of freedom (N-1) = 31 shows that there is significant difference between

the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in

academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using incidental

vocabulary learning through reading. The result of t0 (8.67) is higher than t-table

(2.042). Therefore, it can be conclude that the Null Hypothesis is rejected, while

the alternative hypothesis of the research is accepted.

From the result above, the writer suggest for the teachers can use incidental

vocabulary learning as one of alternative strategy to teach vocabulary. For

students can master the vocabulary using incidental vocabulary learning through

reading. And the last for the further researchers, they can do incidental vocabulary

learning not only through reading but also through listening or video.

Kata Kunci: Pembelajaran Kosakata secara Spontan melalui Membaca,

Kosakata.

Kosakata adalah jumlah daftar atau koleksi kata yang disusun oleh huruf

alfabet untuk menghasilkan kalimat. Penguasaan kosakata adalah salah satu

komponen penting dalam bahasa yang mendukung orang untuk menguasai bahasa

tersebut. Salah satu strategi dalam pengajaran kosakata adalah pembelajaran

kosakata secara spontan melalui membaca.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan ada atau tidaknya

perbedaan yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosakata pada siswa kelas delapan

SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus tahun ajaran 2011/2012 sebelum dan sesudah diajar

menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata secara spontan melalui membaca.

Rancangan penelitian ini adalah penelitian experimen dengan

menggunakan satu kelompok pre test dan post test. Penilitian ini diterapkan untuk

siswa kelas delapan SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus dengan sempel kelas VIIIC. Dalam

penelitian ini, penulis memberikan pre test kepada siswa, kemudian dilanjutkan

dengan pelaksanaan pengajaran kosakata menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata

secara spontan melalui membaca dan langkah yang terakhir memberikan post tes.

Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat dilihat dari hasil pre test dan post test. Hasil

pre test, nilai rata-rata (mean) = 75.1 dan stantar deviasi = 8.89. Ini berarti bahwa

penguasaan kosakata sebelum diajar menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata secara

spontan melalui membaca pada siswa kelas delapan SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus tahun

pelajaran 2011/2012 adalah rendah. Sementara itu, pada hasil post test, nilai rata-

rata (mean) = 88.7 dan standar deviasi = 8.5. Jadi, hasil dari penguasaan kosakata

sesudah diajar menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata secara spontan melalui

membaca pada siswa kelas delapan SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus tahun pelajaran

2011/2012 adalah baik. Hipotesis pada tingkat signifikan 0.05 (5%) = 2.042 dan

tingkat kebebasan (N-1) = 31, menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan antara

penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas delapan SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus tahun pelajaran

2011/2012 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata

secara spontan melalui membaca. Hasil to (8.67) lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (2.042).

Dapat dikatakan bahwa null hipotesis ditolak, dan alternatif hipotesis diterima.

Dari hasil di atas penulis menyarankan untuk para guru agar dapat

menggunakan pembelajaran kosakata secara spontan melalui membaca sebagai

salah satu strategi untuk mengajar materi kosakata. Untuk siswa-siswa dapat

menguasai kosakata dengan menggunakan pemeblajaran kosakata secara spontan

melalui membaca. Dan yang terakhir, untuk peneliti selanjutnya, mereka dapat
