Distinguished Service Award British Columbia Dental Association

Wa Sham (Sam) Cheung

In presenting Dr. Cheung with this award, the BC Dental Association praised him for having

“dedicated himself to the oral health of BC children” and having been extensively involved in

organized dentistry throughout his 30-year career, serving as President of both the BC Society of

Pediatric Dentists and the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

“Dr. Cheung has made significant contributions as an educator, serving as a clinical faculty

member at UBC and more recently as the coordinator of an oral pathology module for specialist

trainees. An examiner at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada for 10 years, he has worked

tirelessly to revamp the pediatric dentistry examination. Dr. Cheung is known for his selfless

dedication to patients, students, the profession and the specialty of pediatric dentistry.”

Award for Teaching Excellence in Engineering and Geoscience Education

Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.

Robert Millar

Professor Millar attained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from Queensland University, and a

M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. from UBC. He is a past recipient of the Killam Teaching Prize (2006-07) and

was recognized with an Outstanding Professor Award for seven consecutive years by UBC civil

engineering students.

The Award for Teaching Excellence in Engineering and Geoscience Education is the highest

teaching award for engineering educators in the province. In presenting this award to Professor

Millar, the APEGBC described him as “an engaging educator who strives to continually improve

all aspects of his courses” and “a caring and dedicated mentor” who “ fosters a comfortable

learning environment that stimulates interaction and encourages questions”.

Dr. Millar’s research interests include Mine Water Management, River Bank Stability, Hydraulics, and Instream Habitat Restoration, as well as Energy, Climate Change and Sustainability.

Joan Bottorff

Fellow American Academy of Nursing (FAAN)

Dr. Joan Bottorff has been elected Fellow of the American Academy of Nurses. This is a rare and exceptional honor to receive as a Canadian nurse which recognizes Dr. Bottorff’s extensive achievements in nursing research. The American Academy of Nursing's approximately 1,890 Fellows are largely the United States’ most accomplished nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research. Dr. Bottorff’s research interests include: Social contexts of health behaviour, Cancer prevention and screening, Tobacco control, Women's health, Risk perception and risk communication, Predictive testing and Pallative care. She is Chair in Health Promotion & Cancer Prevention and an Affiliate Scientist for the BC Cancer Prevention Agency. Her current research focuses on building a collaborative framework for cancer prevention. With nearly $1 million in funding from the Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. Bottorff will spearhead a multi-sector team of researchers and health professionals from the Canadian Cancer Society – BC & Yukon Division, BC Cancer Agency and Northern Health in a project aimed at reducing the incidence of cancer in northern British Columbia. Dr. Bottorff is a UBC Distinguished University Scholar and she completed her PhD in Nursing at the University of Alberta in 2002.

Prof. Sumaila has been appointed to the 2nd Johan Hjort Chair in Marine Economics and Management by the Nordic Centre of Excellence (NorMER – University of Oslo), recognizing his contributions to the field of ocean and fisheries economics, management and policy. The Johan Hjort Chairs are internationally recognized researchers who have been selected to honor for their contribution to marine science.

Gardner is being honoured for creating a website called diastemas.net, and fostering collaboration, learning and exchange among dental students across three continents.

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, honouring Dr. Sweet as an exceptional Canadian for his achievements and significant contributions to fellow citizens, to communities and to the country.

In March, the College of Dental Surgeons of BC recognized Dr. Sweet with the Honorured Member Award for his enourmous contribution to dentistry on a provincial, national and international level. He is credited with inventing the process for extracting DNA from teeth or bones for body identification.
