I developed and implemented one of the first successful industrial adaptive control schemes in the world in 1976. This system, controlling TiO2 rotary kilns was still in operation as of July 1990. It had maintained good performance despite dramatic operational changes such as a 60% increase in production rate. I have since upgraded the system to my Laguerre-based methodology.

From 1989 to 1999, I held the senior Paprican/NSERC Industrial Chair in Industrial Process Control. I work closely with Paprican, pulp and appear companies, and suppliers. Over the last 20 years, I have implemented adaptive control schemes on various pulp and paper processes in Canada. Among those, a Kamyr digester chip level controller stayed in operation for 4 years, after which the digester was put out of commission. A more recent algorithm (developed with a Paprican colleague) has been applied to eight different Kamyr digesters since 1988, and is now commercialized worldwide by MoDo-Chemetics. Our Laguerre-based adaptive controller controlled a bleach plant for about a year with great success. Then, Universal Dynamics, a Vancouver-based consulting firm picked up on this development, and is now marketing it as BrainWave. Many successful applications have now been reported, both in Canada and in the US. To my knowledge, this is the first commercial “general-purpose” adaptive controller to be developed in Canada, and one of the few commercially available in the world. It is used successfully for control of lime kilns, beer brewing kettles, glass furnaces, batch reactors, etc. In June 1996, it was awarded the BC Technology Industries Association Award for Excellence in Product Innovation. This controller was featured in the Technology issue of IEEE Spectrum in January 1998. In Houston in October 1998, it was awarded the ISA President Award for Innovation. In October 1999, our Partnership was awarded a 1999 NSERC Synergy Award. We now have developed a multivariable version, also commercialized by Universal Dynamics. Our work on Laguerre functions played a part in generating a renewed interest among control theoreticians in the use of orthonormal functions in system identification.

Work on paper machine estimation and control has led to the commercialization by Honeywell of a profile estimation algorithm and more recently of a novel cross-directional control robust tuning scheme based on two-dimensional loop-shaping. The latter is now commercialized as the Intellimap software. In October 2002, Intellimap was recognized by an NSERC Synergy Award and in December 2002 by an IEEE Control Systems Technology Award. Over the years, Honeywell has hired four MASc students, and three PhD students from my research group. They constitute the core of the development team at the Honeywell Centre of Excellence in CD control, based in North Vancouver. Still with Honeywell, we developed an adaptive coating system, contributed toward the development of the next generation of CD controllers based on model-predictive control, and more recently, completed an NSERC Strategic Grant to develop truly autonomous CD controllers.

My early work on the use of wavelets for paper machine data analysis was incorporated in the Profile Analysis Toolbox commercialized by Profigard. Newer versions have been developed and the resulting WavePlot toolbox has been implemented in the CANFOR Prince George Paper mill. Recent work on adaptive control of chip refiner motor load has led to a US patent, and has been hailed as the first reported industrial application of dual adaptive control. My work, in collaboration with the late Chemical Engineering Professor Chad Bennington, on the dynamics of macromixing shed new light on the design of mixing chests for the pulp and paper industry.

In 2001, after over 20 years of research in process control, I became interested in biomedical engineering. In 2002, together with Dr Ansermino and colleagues from the Department of Anesthesia, we founded a research group devoted to increasing patient safety through enhanced clinical monitoring and the application of advanced signal processing and control technology. The research of the Electrical and Computer Engineering in Medicine (ECEM) group has resulted in a number of exciting developments. We have been very successful in grant competitions while our research has garnered several awards at conferences, and most recently the 2010 NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering.

1. We have led the development of a novel method for estimating anesthetic depth using wavelet analysis of the electroencephalogram. The new, patented index is capable of differentiating between an awake “baseline” state and the state of hypnosis. It has been successfully tested in a number of patients undergoing surgery. The main advantage of this new index is that it leads the BIS index (the commercially dominant method) by about 30

Page 8: THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA - …med-fom-clone-pt.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2013/09/Full-CV... · Web viewR.J. VanFleet, G.E. Stewart (2006), “A Setpoint Generation Tool for

seconds and has a more consistent and predictable dynamic behaviour. Two US patents have been issued and a licensing agreement has been signed with Cleveland Medical Devices. Over 25 units are currently being used in clinical trials in North America and Europe. The resulting NeuroSense monitor recently obtained CE marking and is now distributed in Europe and Canada.

2. I have led the development of sophisticated algorithms to detect changes in physiological signals, based on our new concept of context-sensitive monitoring. Those algorithms have the ability to adapt automatically to patient characteristics and have the potential to increase patient safety by alerting clinicians of impending changes in physiological parameters. For robustness against artifacts, we have developed a novel, award-winning algorithm for detection of electrocautery, as well as an elegantly simple sensor fusion method for heart rate monitoring.

3. To implement our algorithms, we have developed iAssist, a flexible extensible software platform to integrate those algorithms with clinical monitors. The thesis describing this work was recently recognized by the 2008 WAGS/UMI Innovation in Technology Award and has led to collaboration with Dräger Medical Systems.

4. We have been developing a vibrotactile display that conveys changes in physiological signals to the clinician using the sense of touch. In a human patient simulation facility, the display aided in significantly speeding up the administration of life-saving therapy in an intraoperative emergency.

5. We have developed a neuromuscular blockade advisory system (NMBAS) based on adaptive control technology. This system has been successfully tested in clinical trials and is our steppingstone toward the development of closed-loop control of anesthesia through fully automated drug delivery. More recently, we have developed iControl, a software platform for closed-loop control of anesthesia currently that was recently tested on adults at Foch Hospital in France, on children at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver and currently on adults at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. This work has attracted the attention of GE Healthcare.

6. Recently, my research group has developed the Phone Oximeter, a smartphone-based pulse oximeter for respiratory disease and management in the developing world, the idea being to make pulse oximetry universally available. Already this development has been recognized by a number of grants in Global Health, e.g. a Grand Challenges Canada grant and a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (B&MGF) grant on prevention and detection of pre-eclampsia; a CIDA grant on prevention and management of sepsis. We are currently extending the capabilities of our Phone Oximeter. This work has led to the creation of a startup company, LionsGate Technology. The key intellectual property (IP) has been protected and a US Patent issued on February 17, 2015 (US Patent No. 8,958, 859 B2) and the company has raised in excess of $2M that includes private equity investments and a $1M contribution from Grand Challenges Canada. The Phone Oximeter™ was showcased at the United Nations General Assembly as one of 10 Global Health Innovations to Save Lives Now. In May 2014, it was demonstrated to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), at the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Summit in Toronto. This has attracted media's attention (Globe and Mail, CTV, GlobalTV, CBC Radio-Canada, Vancouver Sun, etc.). In February 2015, the commercial version, known as Kenek Edge received Health Canada certification as a Class II Medical Device. As part of my sabbatical, I spent three months at STIAS as an invited Fellow to further the technology. As a result, I am co-supervising a Stellenbosch University MASc student working on motion artifacts in pulse oximetry. Finally, the technology has been integrated in a large clinical trial involving 80,000 patients in four countries (Nigeria, Mozambique, Pakistan, India) under the umbrella of the B&MGF project on pre-eclampsia (PI: Dr P. von Dadelszen).

7. My project Kidscan/MobileKids sponsored by the Peter Wall Solutions Initiative has attracted the attention of the media (GlobalTV, CKNW, CBC, Vancouver Sun). The main purpose of this project is to involve a youth advisory group (KidsCan) in the development of a mobile game (MobileKids Monster Manor) that encourages physical activity in children. This work is performed in collaboration with Vancouver-based companies Ayogo and Kineteks,

8. Following our initial study performed with Matt Yedlin in 2009 that established the Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit located near Apt in France as an ideal location for performing high resolution electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements, I conducted a novel series of experiments at LSBB in collaboration with Dr. John Steeves of ICORD. Our EEG work is playing a important role in the upcoming upgrade of LSBB and key to the fact that UBC is considering becoming a “co-tutelle” (co-managing) institution of LSBB. Negotiations between UBC and CNRS to that effect should be concluded in June with Dr John Hepburn’s visit to LSBB. As a result, over the next few years, I am planning to establish and lead a world-class EEG laboratory at LSBB in collaboration of several French laboratories.
