Chapter 1

My name: Lee Jua

Age : 14

Blood Type : B

Birthday : 2002. 07. 11

Nationality : ...

“Nationality, nationality, nationality” I repeated this

word over and over again. What is my nationality? Where

am I from? The more I thought about this, the more severe

headache I had. Is there an answer? Which country do I

belong to? The place where I live or the one where I was

born? Then my mom’s word came to my mind. “North Korea

and South Korea are the same country.” So I wrote down

‘Korea Peninsula’ in the application form. A teacher saw this

and laughed. He changed ‘Korea Peninsula’ to ‘South Korea.’

Even he changed what I wrote without asking me, I did not

feel bad. And I walked to my classroom. I was thinking

about what to do, then I had already reached my classroom.

Suddenly the teacher said to me “Introduce yourself to your

new friends.” I was quite embarrassed but I thought I had

to introduce myself. “Hello? I’m Lee Jua and I’m 14 years

old.” Strangely, when I told about myself, there was a

momentary stir in the class.

One of the classmates asked me, “Where are you

from?” Then, I noticed my intonation was quite different from

other classmates. I studied South Korean intonation very hard,

but I couldn’t change it. My homeroom teacher said calmly to

the class, “She is from a rural area, so everything would be

strange to her. Please help her, everyone.” But many

classmates knew that it was not true. I felt as if I were a

sinner. The teacher looked like he knows my mind, telling

me where my seat is. He added that the classmates are all

kind and nice. As I sat down, one of my classmates named

‘Lee Hee Jung’ came up to me. I was not sure but I felt

like there is a something in common between she and me.

While I was thinking this, she came to me and said,

“Hey, Because of you, our country is becoming restless. How

can we trust the people from your country?” The other

friends all looked at me and agreed with her. I wanted to

say confidently that it was not what I did, but the

government did. Why should I be blamed? But l didn't have

enough confidence to say so.

It was time for Lunch. I wanted to eat lunch alone

but Lee Hee Jung’s group did not leave me alone. When I

was sitting at the corner of the table and started to eat, five

of them were coming to me.

“Hey, Jua. Didn’t you bring your lunch box?”

“No, no. It’s Gwakbab1). They call it Gwakbab.”

“Can a North Korea girl eat this kind of good cuisine? Isn’t

it too much for you?”

“Jua, who came from North Korea, became rich!”

“Your people pick up and eat food on the ground. Ha Ha”

Lee Hee Jung suddenly picked some food that somebody

had left on the cafeteria tile and threw it to me. “This is for

you.”

I dropped my spoon and wept. ‘Is this place worth to

leave the country where my father and younger brother live?’

I must have stayed in North Korea if I had known that I

would be bullied here. It would be better if the cafeteria

door was locked. I wished no one cared about me. I noticed

I was nothing but ugly duckling in this country.

Chapter 2

Today will be the day when my daughter Jua went to

school for the first time. I hoped the students were going to

be nice to her well. I was also worried if she failed to

adjust in the new environment.

Jua knocked the door making a strong thump sound. I

felt anxious because I was not sure whether she looks glad

or sad.

“Okay, I am on my way!” My daughter had a such

social personality that she would mingle with other friends. I

opened the door with some positive expectations. “I’m

home” I noticed something bad happened to her. She looked

gloomy and depressed.

Before telling her that I was worried about her, I

found out that she dragged her shoes on the floor again. I

had no choice but to scold her for it. I could not afford to

buy new shoes everytime she broke an old one. “I told you

not to drag your shoes on the floor. You should spare your

things. There is no difference between the living in the

South Korea and in the North Korea.”

Jua reacted to my statement angrily. “Mom. Please!!

We are not living in the North anymore. We should live up

to the standard of the South Korea. It doesn't matter if I

drag my shoes and throw away things. We can just buy new

things at the store. You are always saying you need to save,

save, and save without buying me anything. I’m going

crazy.” Today, she was much more sensitive. I felt bad

about my daughter who didn’t understand my situation and

reacted more angrily. “You think you need to be careful in

choosing language before your mother.” The conflict between

me and my daughter made me feel down and exhausted

more than ever. The harder the life in the South korea got,

the more vivid the memories I spent with my husband got.

Actually, living here was much better than the

previous life in the North. The problem is that the life is

getting harder. At least, in North Korea, I didn’t have any

problem with my daughter and I could stay with my

husband. I murmured faintly. “Stop thinking in a negative

way.” I needed to find some ways to solve this problem

step by step.

Chapter 3

"Why did you make up so heavy? you will get 2

points off for make up"

Mr. Jung scolded me in front of the class. I was so

ashamed because I became an example of the punishment of

make up. I talked to her while staring at her. "What's the

matter, can't I do whatever I want on my face? whatever..."

Mr. Jung looked confused. I used to get trouble, but it

was not a big deal to me. Also, by showing others that I try

to defy to teacher, I thought others might be scared of me.

During break time, I and my friends fixed our make

up at restroom to look more white. As I started to fix my

make up, Kim Gayoung told me with the door half open

"Lee Heejeong, teacher told me that you should come to

teache’s office. O Sumin, one of my friend, said while

curling her hair with a curling iron. "Oh my word, Are you

in trouble again?" Other friends joked around, but I knew

that it was such a serious problem.

"we will go with you, hey guys, pick up all our stuff

let's go down with her." Kim Gayoung was already in the

restroom and O Sumin, Han Nagyeong, and Lee Songeun

was picking up all our stuffs. However I was a little bit

shocked and worried about that if I got caught that I am a

bully. "Guys, wait a minute, I'll go alone." I stammered as I

was puzzled at that situation and I ran down real quick to

office. I felt other friends looked me like a weird person.

As I was just standing in front of the door of office,

teacher glanced at me and said "Are you here?, come in.

Oh, why are you so sweaty, sit here, give me a minute" She

went to the shelf brought a file to me.

I leafed through the file. "Hanging around Camp?" I

was just refused to go to the camp, as I thought teacher

think that I have no friend at all.

"Mrs. Jung, I am not interested..."

"How's your mother, Is she doing good?, There is a camp

about hanging around with different people hold in the city

hall, I prefer you to join that camp and I hope you to work

harder during school day." She cared me a lot, but I felt

angry that she is just sympathizing me.

"Oh my.. wow" Somebody whispered at the back of

the office door. I sensed that something is going wrong so I

dashed out the office and ran toward to my classroom.

When I reached at classroom unlike normal day, I could

realize that my classroom is different from other time. My

classroom was very noisy and classmates was talking

something behind my back. As I walked into the classroom,

bunch of boys came to me and made fun of me such as

"Oh, here comes the gook." "hey, slit" and also girls laughed

at me. I was about to cry so I needed my friends to ask

what to do. At least they might be my side. But I once

again shocked that my best friends, Han Nagyeong, Kim

Gayoung and Lee Songeun were the main culprit whose

making fun of me.

Next day, I came to school with no energy, not expect

anyone to greet with me. I didn't do make up either. My

face was much darker than others.

Chapter 4

I’ve never thought that Heejeong, who has bothered

me, is from a multicultral family. Suddenly I remembered

the time when I first met her. I felt a feeling of familiarity

with her. I didn't know why. But now I understand that's

because we are in the same situation. Then why has she

bothered me? At that moment, I heard screaming somewhere

near me, so I went there. I saw Heejeong’s friends harass

Heejeong.

One of Heejeong’s friends said "You are so funny.

You are also a member of muticultural family. But you

made fun of Jua because she is a member of a muticutural

family?" Heejeong said, "I am so sorry."

One of Heejeong’s friend slapped Heejeong on the

cheek. Everybody looked at them. At that moment, I

screamed. "Stop! What's wrong with a member of

multicultural family and a North Korean defector. Why are

you discriminating against them? Why?"

In a minute, I regretted what I had said. They might

bother me again. But thanks God the bell rang. I was

worried about next break time. But thanks God again my

homeroom teacher called me to his office.

He said "Jua, It seems that you've had a really hard

time. Why don't you tell your friends the situations of North

Korea and your difficulties? Then they will understand you

better and you will have a better school life with them.

Would you please introduce North Korea to your friends?"

I don't want to. Why do I have to do that? Actually it was

better when I was in North Korea. Was it a good choice to

escape from North Korea? But anyway I can't go back to

North Korea. So I have to get over all the difficulties. I

decide to introduce North Korea to my classmates as my

teacher asked me to.

A few days later, finally the day I had to give a

presentation in front of my classmates came.

Though I had prepared a lot, I was so nervous. I

wondered if this presentation would made them understand

me better? Anyway I stand in front of them.

"I am going to talk about North Korea which I come

from. Nowadays we think North Korea is bad because of

nuclear test, the possibility of provocation etc. But that is

not because ordinary people of North Korea are bad but

because a ruler, a dictator is bad. Most people of North

Korea are exploited and groaning under the oppression of

the dictator, Kim Jeongeun. If they are not obedient or lead

the life of religion or contact the culture of South Korea,

they should work at the offender institute all day long. If

they found anyone or any members of his family trial to

escape from North Korea, the rest of the family execute

them who try to escape. To save us, my dad, my dad

stayed behind. The number of Kotjebi is increasing. Tens of

thousands of people about my age are starving to death.

Sadly speaking, we take their clothes because we don't have

anything to wear. Maybe my dad is looking for something in

the trash can for my younger brother who is sick. Please

just hate North Korea which made us live miserably not the

people in North Korea. We can't help it. People in North

Korea respect the people and culture of South Korea and

know that they are better than those of North Korea, though

the dictator of North Korea says that the people in South

Korea are poor and the culture of South Korea is not good.

So please respect the people and culture of North Korea. I

think we should respect each other.

After I evaded surveillance network, crossed mountains

and rivers, did a lot of things avoiding being seen by the

public officers of North Korea, finally I arrived here in

South Korea.

Yesterday I fought with my mom. She lived for more

than 40 years in North Korea. I just lived there for only

14 years and now I lived here in South Korea. We have

different values. I hated my mom because she didn't

understand me. I didn't want to tell her my situation that I

was isolated by other peers. But now I understand her. She

had lived in North Korea for a long time. So she didn't

understand the way of life in same way in South Korea. We

promised to try to understand each other.

As you know Heejeong and I are different from you

in many ways such as accents, customs, appearances etc.

However, I ask you to recognize differences between us and

try to understand each other better. Please treat the people

who are from North Korea or multicultural families like the

people around you in South Korea. It will take time but

let's do our best.”

At that moment I was so sad remembering the time I

had experienced. I said in my mind "It was so difficult for

me to come to South Korea after enduring all the hardship.

However, do I have to live like this here in South Korea?"

Thinking of my situation, I was so sad and I cried. I tried

to stop crying but I couldn't. I managed to finish the

presentation. When I finished the presentation, all the

students started to applaud against my expectations. I was

so surprised.

- Two days later-

After the presentation, my life was not the same as

before. Heejeong and her friends including Sumin, Nagyeong

and Gayoung who have harrassed me are all my close

friends.

“Hey Lee Heejeong, Lee Jua! Hurry up!!”

“If you don't, I leave earlier than you”

Accepting teacher Jung's suggestion, I gave a presentation.

As the result I could have good friends. I am so happy to

be a close friend with Heejeong. After going thorough one

of the difficult time of our school life, I and my friends

realized one important thing. That is all of us are Koreans

who love this country from the bottom of our heart.

Epilogue

Dear Dad Daddy! It's me. How are you? I am doing great here in South Korea. At first time I couldn't adjust myself, and had a hard time living here. But I am okay now. They had strong prejudice against people like me who are from North Korea or Multicutural families. When I open my mind and try to be frank with them, they understand me. Thanks to my honestness, I have good relations with all the people around me here in South Korea. Don't worry about me. Mom and I are really worried about you, dad. I miss you a lot. I hope you are doing well. I want to see you here in South Korea someday in the near future. I love you!

“국적 국적 국적” 입으로 계속 되뇌어 보았다. 나의 국적은 어디일까. 나는 어느 나라 사람일까 생각하면 할수록 머리만 아픈 것 같다. 답이 있기는 한 걸까. 내가 살고 있는 곳과 태어난 곳 어디가 내 국적일까 그러다 엄마의 말씀이 생각났다. 지난번에 엄마가 조선인민민주주의공화국과 남한은 같은 나라라고, 그래서 자랑스럽

게 썼다. ‘한반도’

입학원서를 내자 선생님께서는 웃으시면서 한국으로 바꾸셨다. 내가 쓴 것을 바꾸었지만 그렇다고 기분이 나쁘지도 않았다. 그 후 배정된 반으로 걸어갔다. 어떻게 해야 할까 여러 생각이 교차하자 어느새 반에 도착해 있었다.

선생님께서 소개를 하라고 했다. 갑자기 소개를 하라니! 당황스럽기는 했지만 무슨 말이라도 해야 할 것 같았다. “안녕하세요? 저는 이주아입니다. 저는 14살입니다.” 그런데 이상하게도 내가 말을 하자 친구들이 모두 술렁였다. 무슨 이유이지 모르겠다. 그러자 친구가 결정타를 날린다. “너 어디에서 왔냐?” 비아냥거리는 말투. 그러고 보니 나와 친구들의 말투가 다르다는 것을 느끼게 되었다. 아무리 교육을 받아도 억양은 바꿀 수 없나보다. 그러자 선생님께서는 차분한 말투로 “주아는 지방에서 와서 좀 낯설단다. 많이 도와주도록 해라.”

하지만 그것이 거짓말이라는 것을 친구들은 직감적으로 아는 것 같았다. 친구들이 다시 한 번 술렁이기 시작했다. 꼭 내가 죄인인 것처럼 느껴졌다. 선생님께서는 나의 마음을 아셨는지 자리를 알려주며 잘 대해 줄 것이라고 말해주셨다. 하지만 나는 잘 대해주지 않을 것이라는 것을 직감으로 알 수 있었다.

자리로 돌아오자 어떤 아이가 나에게 다가왔다. ‘이희정’ . 그 친구 무엇인가 모르게 나는 동질감을 느낄 수 있었다. 그런 생각도 잠시 그 아이가 나에게 말을 건다 “야 , 너 때문에 우리나라가 이렇게 불안해서 되겠냐? 우리나라 공격하는 너네 나라 사람을 어떻게 믿냐?” 다른 친구들 모두가 나를 쳐다보며 동조하는 것을 느꼈다. 내가 그러고 싶어서 그런 거냐고 정부가 하는 건데 내가 잘못한 거냐고 자신 있게 말하고 싶었지만 난 자신이 없었다.

점심시간이 다가왔다. 나는 혼자 먹고 싶었지만 이희정네 무리가 나를 가만히 두지 않았다. 내가 식탁 구석에 앉아 한 술 뜨려고 할 때, 다섯명 무리가 가까이 왔다.

“야, 주아야. 니 도시락 안 싸와?”

“아니지 아니지, 곽 . 밥. 얘네는 도시락 곽밥이라 그러잖아.”

“북한 여자애가 남한에 와서 이렇게 좋은 밥 먹어도 되는거야? 완전 사치부리는거 아냐? ”

“탈북한 이주아, 남한 와서 신분 상승!!!”

“니네 땅바닥에서 뭐 주워먹는다매. 크큭.” 이희정은 마지막을 장식하며 급식실 타일에 누가 흘린 반찬을 주워 내 옆에 던져 놓고는 무리를 이끌고 사라졌다.

나는 숟가락을 떨어뜨리고 작게 흐느꼈다. ‘내가 여기를 아빠랑 남동생도 두고 올 만큼 가치가 있는 곳인가..? 내가 어떻게 탈북했는데.. 내가 몇 번의 죽을 고비를 넘기며 도착한 나라 남한에서,

괴롭힘을 당할 바엔 어떻게든 북한에서 버티는 건데...’

급식실의 문이 차라리 잠겨버렸으면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 차라리 나에게 아무도 관심을 갖지 않았으면 했다. 나는 그저 그들에게 한 마리 미운오리새끼였을 뿐이다.

Chapter 2

오늘은 내 딸 주아가 처음으로 이곳 학교에 등교하는 날이다.

여기 애들이 잘해줘야 할텐데……. 애가 적응을 못하면 어쩌나.

‘쿵쿵쿵’ 주아가 문을 두드린다. 아이가 웃는 얼굴일지 우는 얼굴일지 몰라 불안하다.

“응~ 열어줄게!” 우리 주아라면 성격도 좋아 아이들과 잘 어울렸을 것이다. 난 내심 기대를 하고 문을 열어주었다.

“학교 다녀왔습니다.” 가슴이 쿵 내려앉았다. 이게 웬일, 주아는 풀이 죽어 시무룩해 있었다. 그런데 주아가 또 신발을 질질 끌고 들어오는 것이었다. 안 그래도 힘든 집안 살림인데 말이다. 그러니 내가 말을 안 할 수가 없다.

“내가 신발 질질 끌고 다니지 말랬지! 물건을 아껴 써야지 남한

에 왔다고 달라질 거 없잖아!”

그러자 내말을 듣던 주아가 성을 낸다. “아 쫌, 엄마도 이제 남한 왔으니까 남한인처럼 행동해야지 창피해 죽겠어 신발 좀 끌고 다니고 물건 좀 낭비하면 어때 물건 잘 사주지도 않으면서 짜증나!” 오늘따라 딸이 더 예민하게 받아들인다. 물건을 안사주고 싶어서 안사주는 것도 아닌데 이런 엄마의 마음을 몰라주는 딸이 실망스러워 나도 모르게 말이 막 나왔다. “뭐가 어쩌고 어째 엄마한테 함부로 말하지 진짜 얘가 못하는 말이 없어!” 딸에게 미안한 마음과 실망한 마음이 함께 들이닥쳐 너무 힘들었다. 점점 더 남한에서의 생활이 힘들어 질수록 북한에서 남편과의 추억이 생각난다.

사실 생활은 많이 좋아졌다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 마음고생이 더 심해지는 것이 문제다. 적어도 북한에 있을 때는 딸과 싸우지도 않았고, 남편과 떨어져 지내지도 않았다. 아니다라고 자꾸 생각하면 뭐하나 어떻게든 풀어나가는 것이 상책이다.

Chapter 3

“너 왜 이렇게 화장 진하게 했니? 화장은 벌점 2점인거 몰라?”

정 선생님이 나를 아이들 앞에 세워놓고 혼냈다. 반 애들 앞인데, 내 체면에 가만히 있을 수는 없었다. 나는 모두에게 두려움의 대상이 되어야 하기 때문이다. 나는 눈을 부릅뜨고 선생님을 똑바로 쳐다보며 말했다.

“제 얼굴인데 마음대로 못해요? 벌점 주려면 주던가……. ”

정 선생님의 얼굴에 당황한 기색이 역력했다. 이렇게 혼나는 일은 매일 밥 먹듯이 일어나는 일이었고, 이렇게 선생님한테 대드는 나를 보고 애들이 나를 무서워 할 거라고 나는 생각했다.

쉬는 시간, 나는 내 무리 애들과 함께 화장실에 들어가 화장을 고쳤다. 내 피부를 더 하얗게 만들어야 하기 때문이다.

막 거울을 보고 화장품 뚜껑을 열려고 할 때였다. “야, 이희정!　

너 선생님이 교무실로 내려오래.” 김가영이 화장실 문을 반 쯤 열고 말했다.

“이희정 니 또 혼나냐? 크크” 오수민이 고데기로 앞머리를 말며 웃었다. 내 패거리는 오수민의 말에 다들 웃었지만, 나는 선생님이 나를 따로 부르는 데에는 그렇게 가벼운 문제 때문이 아니란 걸 직감했다.

“같이 내려가 줄게. 야 니들 짐챙겨.” 김가영은 어느새 화장실로 들어와 오수민과 한나경, 이송은의 화장품을 정리해 주고 있었다. 나는 그 몇 초 동안 머리가 비어 멍해 있었다.

“야, 야 잠시만..! 나 혼자 내..려갈게..!” 나는 당황해서 말을 더듬었다. 이렇게 들키는 건가? 나는 재빨리 틴트를 치마 주머니에 넣고 교무실을 향해 계단을 뛰어 내려갔다. 숨이 찼다. 뒤에서 애들이 ‘쟤　이상하다’ ‘쟤랑 놀지 말자’ ‘쟤 뭐 숨기는 거 있나봐’

하고 내게 쏘아대는 것만 같았다.

“희정이 왔니? 들어와라.” 문 앞에서 가만히 서있자 교무실 안에서 정 선생님이 나를 불렀다. “너 왜 이렇게 땀에 젖었니? 일단 여기 앉아 있어.” 정 선생님은 나를 한 번 쳐다보더니 교무실 한켠에 서 있는 책장에서 파일을 하나 꺼내왔다.

‘어울림... 캠프..?’ 나는 파일을 받아 들고 내용을 읽어 내려가기 시작했다. 아무래도 선생님이 내가 애들이랑 어울리지 못한다고생각하나 보다. 나는 거절하려던 참이었다. “쌤, 저 이런거 필요 없…….”

“어머니는 잘 계시니? 이번에 시청에서 이런 캠프 한다더라. 가서 다른 다문화 친구들도 만나보고. 선생님은 희정이가 꼭 가서 학교생활 더 열심히 했으면 한다.” 선생님은 나를 챙겨줬지만, 나는 그게 나를 동정해서 하는 말 같았고 나는 충분히 이런거 없어도 충분히 잘 지내고 있었다. 무엇보다 선생님이 나에 대해 공개된 곳에서 대화를 나누는 것이 창피하고 부끄러웠다. 나는 적당히 거절하고 나오려고 했다.

“헐, 대~박..” 누군가 작게 소리쳤다. 나는 뭔가 잘못 돌아가고 있음을 느껴 바로 교무실을 뛰쳐나갔다.

내가 교실에 겨우 도착했을 때에 교실은 완전 난장판 었다. 교실문을 열고 들어서자마자 남자애들 무리는 “필리핀 왔다.” 며 낄낄 거렸고 여자아이들은 “사와디캅~ 희정이 왔어?” 라며 비웃었다. 나는 울음이 턱까지 차올랐고 내 무리로 가서 어떻게 대책을 세워야겠다고 생각했다. 적어도 걔네들은 내 편에 서 줄 것이다. 하지만 나는 다시 한 번 경악했다. 나를 놀리던 아이들의 중심엔 한나경과 김가영, 이송은 그리고 오수민이 있었기 때문이다.

다음날, 나는 학교에 터덜터덜 걸어왔다. 어느 누구의 인사도 기대하지 않고 내 자리로 돌아갔다. 화장도 하지 않았다. 남들에 비해 새까만 내 얼굴 그대로였다.

Chapter 4.

하늘이 두 쪽 나도 일어날 수 없을 거라고 생각했던 일이 일어났다. 아니 사실 한 번도 생각해본 적도 없는 일이였다. 나를 괴롭혔던 희정이가 다문화 가정이라니. 이 사실을 알자 처음 희정이를 만났을 때가 생각났다. 왠지 모를 친근한 마음이 생긴 이유를 지금에서야 알 수 있게 된 것이다. 어떻게 그럴 수 있을까 또 왜 나를 괴롭힌 것일까 여러 가지 생각이 오고갔다. 그 때 어디선가 비명소리가 들렸고, 생각을 접은 후 비명소리가 난 곳으로 돌아보았다. 거기에는 희정이의 패거리가 있었다. 그런데 그 아이들이 괴롭히는 친구는 다름 아닌 희정이였다.

“야, 너 진짜 웃기다. 너도 다문화면서 주아가 뭐가 어쩌고 어째? 와 진짜 꼴 보기 싫어 ”

“미안해 그럴 생각은 없었어.”

그러자 짝 소리가 나며 정적이 흘렀다. 모두가 그쪽을 바라보았고, 나는 순간 생각할 겨를도 없이 소리쳤다.

“그만해! 다문화면 어떻고 탈북자면 어때 다 같은 사람인데! 왜 너희들은 차별하는 건데 왜!”

그 후 나는 후회했다. 곧 나한테도 비난이 쏟아지겠지, 이제야 벗어났는데 또 당하겠지. 다행히도 그 때 종이 울렸다.

하지만 다음 쉬는 시간을 생각하니 또다시 막막해졌다. 그런데 놀랍게도 또 운의 연속이었다. 선생님께서 나를 부르신 것이다. 그렇

게 정샘을 만나자 또다시 이상한 말을 듣게 되었다.

“주아야 네가 요즘 많이 힘들어 하는 것 같아. 그래서 네가 북한의 상황과, 너의 힘든 점 이런 것들에 대해 이야기 해주면 아이들도 너를 이해해서 더 나은 학교생활을 하게 될 것 같아. 그래서 네가 북한을 소개해 보는 것은 어때?”

속으로 하지 말아야지라고 생각했다. 내가 왜 내 나라를 왜! 그렇게 생각해 보니 북한에서 살았을 때가 더 나았다는 생각이 머리를 스쳤다. 분명히 나는 한국에 오고 싶었는데 내가 죽도록 바랐던 건데 내가 죽도록 바랐던 것이 이런 것이었다니... 집으로 돌아와 다시 한 번 생각해 보았다. 내가 왜 여기서 살고 있는 건지 정말 좋은 선택이었던 것인지. 하지만 곧 깨달았다. 되돌릴 수 없다는 것을, 그러니까 내가 극복해야 한다는 것을 느꼈다. 그 후 속는 셈 치고 선생님의 계획을 따라보기로 했다.

그 후 시간이 흘러 드디어 발표하는 시간이 왔다. 물론 준비를 하기는 했지만 그 어느 때보다도 떨렸다. 아이들이 어떻게 반응해 줄까 어떻게 해야 할까 정말 효과가 있을까 여러 생각이 오고갔다.

그렇게 교탁에 섰다.

“나는 지금부터 북한에 대해서 얘기를 하려고 해. 때론 요즘 도발이니 전쟁이니 하며 북한에 대한 인식이 나빠지고 있지만 그건 모두 윗사람들의 잘못된 정치와 독재자 때문이야. 우리는 김정은의 이기적인 독재에 혹사를 당하며 신음 속에 하루하루를 살아가고 있어. 조금이라도 정치에 순종하지 않거나, 종교생활, 혹은 남한 문화를 접하게 되면 교화소에서 매일같이 노동하고, 혹시라도 탈북을 시도했거나 가족이 탈북했다는 사실이 적발이 되면 사형을 당하게 돼. 우리 아빠는, 우리 아빠는…. 아빠는 나와 엄마만이라도 살라고 기꺼이 남아 계셨어. 그리고, 꽃제비도 날마다 늘어나고 기아 속에 아사하는 내 또래 친구들도 많아. 하지만 우리는 그 아이들의 나머지 옷가지를 뺏어 입을 정도로 치열하게 생존해. 아마 북한에

남아있는 우리 아빠도 아픈 내 동생을 위해 쓰레기통을 뒤지고 계실지도 몰라. 이렇게 우리를 살게 만든 북한은 미워하되, 무고한 북한 사람들을 미워하지 말아줘. 우리는 어떠한 윗사람들의 정치에도 선택권이 없어. 우리 북한 사람들은 남한의 문화를 존중해. 북한의 모든 매체가 남한은 북한보다 못산다고 말들 하지만 우리는 남한이 뛰어나고 또 좋은 사람들도 많다는 걸 알고 있어. 그러니 너희들도 우리 북한사람들과 우리 고유의 문화를 존중해 주었으면 좋겠어. 서로서로 존중해 줄 필요가 있다고 생각해. 나는 북한의 감시망을 뚫고 산을 넘고, 강을 건너고, 몰래 정부의 눈을 피해 한 것들이 수없이 많아. 그리고 도착한 곳이 바로 이곳, 남한이야. 나는 어제 엄마랑 싸웠어. 북한에서 40년을 넘게 살아오신 엄마, 이제 겨우 14년 살고 남한에서 교육을 받고 지금 이 학교에 다니고 있는 나는 가치관이 너무나 달랐어. 내 말을 이해해주지 않는 엄마가 너무 싫었고, 딸이 따돌림 당한다는 이야기를 하고 싶지 않았어. 하지만 지금은 이해해. 엄마와 나는 생각이 달랐고, 엄마는 북한에서 오래 살아오셨으니까 서로 조금씩이나마 맞춰가기로 했어.

희정이나 나나 너희들과 생긴 것, 억양, 습관 등 하나부터 열까지 다 다르지만 차이를 인정하고 어울려 지내주었으면 좋겠어. 탈북자와 다문화가정 사람들을 겉모습은 다를지라도 같은 한국 사람과 똑같이 대우해 주었으면 해, 얘들아. 처음부터 다 맞춰갈 수는 없지만 우리 노력하자.”

이 말을 하는 순간 너무나 치열하게 건너온 그 때가 생각나서 너무나 슬펐다. 우리 때문에 아직도 북한에 살고 있는 아빠. 그리

고 내 남동생 주형이도. 아빠와 떨어지면서도 그 위험을 감수하면서도 온 한국에서 나는 이렇게 밖에 살 수 없다는 것이 너무나 슬펐다. 여기까지 생각이 닿자 눈물이 자꾸만 흘렸다. 친구들이 이상하게 볼 것 같아 눈물을 감추려고 했지만 자꾸만 흐르는 눈물을 멎지 않았다. 내가 왜 눈물을 흘리고 있는지 나도 모르고 있었다.

그 후 겨우겨우 하려 했던 말을 추스려 발표를 마쳤다. 순간 박수소리가 터져 나왔다. 전혀 예상하지 못한 일이여서 그런지 너무나 놀랐다.

-이틀 후-

연설을 끝마치고 너무나 많은 것들이 바뀌고 새로워졌다. 특히 나를 집중적으로 괴롭히던 희정이네 무리. 또 그런 희정이를 놀리고 비꼬던 수민이, 나경이, 가영이. 그 아이들 모두 지금은 나와 친하다.

“야! 이희정, 이주아! 빨리와!!”

“안 오면 떼놓고 감 수고”

연설을 해보라는 정샘의 말에 용기를 얻어 발표했고, 이렇게 좋은 애들이 내 친구들이 되었다. 희정이와 마음을 터놓는 친구가 되었다. 가장 험난한 청소년기의 시간이 보내면서, 나와 친구들은 중요한 한 가지를 알게 되었다. 그것은 우리 모두가 한국이라는 나라를 마음 속 깊이 사랑하는 한국인이라는 사실이다.

에필로그

아빠에게 아빠 저 주아예요. 잘 지내고 계시죠? 저는 한국에서 잘 지내고 있어요. 잠시 힘들기도 했지만 이제는 괜찮아요. 처음에는 적응하기 정말 힘들었어요. 한국은 의외로 우리에 대한 편견 같은 것들이 심하더라고요... 제가 왜 여기에 오려했는지, 그렇게 힘들게 들어와서 이런 대우나 받고 있는지. 이런 생각 참 많이 했어요. 회의감도 들고... 근데 솔직하게 말하니까 친구들도 제 말을 들어주더라고요. 덕분에 지금은 정말 잘 지내고 있어요. 요즘은 아빠가 많이 보고 싶어요. 저는 밥도 잘 먹고 잘 지내니까 제 걱정은 하지 마세요. 아빠가 정말 걱정 되요. 그곳에서 아프진 않은지. 밥은 잘 드시고 계신지……. 잘 지내실 거라고 믿을게요. 빨리 남한으로 와 주실 거죠? 사랑해요~
