Sue Schlanbusch Support fromher and all my family, given selflessly, encouraged me to move out of my comfortzone to answer God's call. Much has been

accomplished during these three years, andI can say humbly and in great gratitudethat the three visions I received have been

accomplished.

1) Our debt-free new National Office

Suite, The Margaret J. FranklinCenter in Woodstock, Georgia.

2) The position of a Spiritual FormationLeader on the National Council, assuring a process for continuallearning in each chapter.

3) The restructuring of the NationalCouncil, after 115 years, to better meetthe needs of our membership.

My prayer continues for each of us thatwe may stand firm in the knowledge that wehave been marked as Christ's own at our

baptism. With that seal we should never beafraid to take His loving message of salvation, peace and joy anywhere, reconciling all Hispeople to Him and to one another. This is theministry given to His followers.

The proposed amendment to Article III, Section C (3) has been rescinded by the NationalCouncil because it was determined that it was in conflict with other articles in the bylaws.See page 10 in the Spring issue of The Royal Cross.

One Solitary Cife

j / e was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasantJ I woman. He grew up in another obscure village, where/ He worked in a carpenter shop until He was 30. Then

for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never had afamily or owned a home. He never set foot inside a big city. Henever traveled 200 miles from the place where He was born. Henever wrote a book or held an office. He did none of these thingsthat usually accompany greatness.

While He was still a young man, the tide of popular opinionturned against Him. His friends deserted Him. He was turnedover to His enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. Hewas nailed to a cross between two thieves. While He was dying. His executioners gambled for the only piece ofproperty He had—His coat. When He was dead. He was taken down and laid in aborrowed grave.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today He is thecentral figure for much of the human race. All the armies thatever marched and all the navies that ever sailed have not affectedthe life of man upon earth as powerfully as this "One Solitary Life."

This is a very brief biography of JESUS, the One Daughters call King andfollow as Lord. His life is the model of prayer and service from which we drawour motto:

"I am but one; but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can dosomething. What I can do, I ought to do. WHiat I ought to do, by thegrace of God, I will do. Lord, what will you have me do?"

<Su)nma%ij <^£.jioxt oj- of c^iA/iaia^ 31 2000The National Council of the Order of the

Daughters of the King met March 31 throughApril 4, 2000, at the site of our TriennialRetreat, the Renaissance Hotel in Denver,Colorado. A half-day meeting of the ExecutiveBoard and a day-long meeting of the StrategicPlanning Group preceded the Coimcil meeting.Additionally, one day was devoted to Triennialand the Council was joined by many womenfrom Colorado who will he hostessing andhelping in countless ways.

Early in the business session was adiscussion of the election process for NationalCouncil and of new National officers. These

are discernment processes (nonpolitical) andselection (not election) of officers and cormcil

members. Once the Triennial delegates selectthe new council, they select officers in aprayerful manner. Anyone eligible to serve ina position is asked to stand (unless there is apersonal discernment that the position couldnot be served) and, after prayer, each newlyelected council member writes the name of

the person she feels God is calling to thatparticular position; one position at a time, beginning with president, then first vicepresident, second vice president, secretaryand treasurer.

The following are nominees for Council2000-2003: Pam Boyette, Joyce Broome, JoanDalrymple, Ginger Dougherty, Marti Fagley,Carol Gaskill, Leigh Hartman, SharonLundgren, Jean Marani, Joan Millard, GracePeyton, Tory Riihimaki, Gerry Sweeting, PatTilley, Deborah Tischler, Barbara Tobin, andBarbara Ward. Please pray for these womenwilling to serve the Order at this time.

Council named our new offices The

Margaret J. Franklin Center, National Officeof the Order of the Daughters of the King. The new telephone number is 770-517-8552,and the fax number is 770-517-8066. The

new address will be used exclusively byTriennial's end.

The proposed bylaw amendment Section3, C (3) as published in The Royal Cross wasrescinded. A standing historical commissionwas established, accepting the proposal ofConnie Haas, within the constraints of theArchives budget. Self-Denial and Master'sFund grants, recommended from respectivecommittees, were approved.

To further support the establishment ofaffiliate structures. Council accepted a recommendation that would allow the appointedAffiliate Representative to invite anotherAffiliate Daughter (with seat, no vote) toCoimcil meetings.

The Order will have a booth at the

General Convention (Deborah Tischler andMarti Fagley are coordinators) and SueSchlanbusch and Kathleen Nyhuis have beenasked to do clown liturgy workshops and willserve as delegates to the ECW Triennial.

Strategic Planning, addressing the Order'sneed to "Intentionally: affirm our vows andstrengthen chapters for the next Triennium,"presented structural changes for Council. Thenumber of council members would not change, but positions would be based upon functionsuch as funds' development, spiritual formation, structural communication, leadershipdevelopment. Junior Daughters, Daughters-at-Large, International, Chapter Development,Membership, and Publication Liaison.

Following discussion and prayer, theproposal was amended to include a councilrepresentative for each of the funds and wasaccepted for use by the next Council.

Reflections...

We asked the members of National Council who are retiring and the eight provincial presidentswho sit on Council representing the various geographical areas of the Church to give us somethoughts on their time served.

Retiring Council Members

KATHLEEN NYHUIS

Province VIII, 1991-1994; Junior Daughters 1994-1997;Secretary 1997-2000

When I look back over my nine years of service at thenational level, I am overwhelmed at the history we havemade and how we have grown both outwardly and individually, Serving as Province VIII Presiding Daughter underNational President Ehzabeth Hart, I was terribly impressedby the spiritual depth and genuine servanthood of myCouncil sisters. Other than the Provincial work (first tripwas to Hawaii for a Province meeting and to institute thesecond chapter in the Islands, later to Alaska to institutethe Order there, and on and on . . .), I was honored to workon Barriers, Bumps, and Bridges (the "isms" evident in theOrder and what we might do to build bridges among allDaughters). During this time the Order expanded intoAfidca! We were blessed to connect with otu" Lakota brothers

and sisters and their deep spirituality through BishopCraig Anderson.

The next Triennium brought great joy for me in workingwith Jimiors and the Executive Board. Not only did I travelacross the country to meet and encourage our youngestmembers, but also I visited Honduras with PresidentLaurie Ann Herman to institute the first Jiinior chapterand the second Daughters' chapter there at the Cathedral.Having Juniors present at the Triennial was a special treatfor all. Importeint exploration of expanding membershipwas done: international membership thrived; however, expansion into other denominations beyond affiliate membership was set aside by the Triennial business session.

This Triennium brought strong, creative leadershipforms under President Sue Schlanbusch. Internationalgrowth exploded, a concentrated pastoral approach wasgiven to membership issues, our connection to the work ofthe women of the Chm-ch remained steady and encouraging, and fhiits of many years of work were harvested. Whileserving as Secretary and as convener of Strategic Pljinning, the Order was called "back to the basics" of affirming ourindividual vows and ahead to new office suites and new

considerations for the Council structure.

It has been time consuming, tiring, and frustrating, which speaks of the struggles of growth as an Order andas an individual. It has been exciting, productive, andfulfilling which speaks of the joy of being used by God. Iam but one and I am humbled and honored to have been

of use to the Order. Our Lord has blessed the Order andme during these past nine years, and it has been myintention to bless the Lord and to work for His sake.

NANCY WYANT

Province VIII, 1994-1996; TYeasurer 1996-2000During the six years I served as a national council

member, I grew up spiritually. The projects we worked sohard on seem minute when compared with the wonderfulrelationships that developed as a result of serving together. The exposure to women of prayer and service from somany geographical regions helped me gain new imder-standing of the Lord's presence in my own life. As a result,my spirituality was expanded and I found the Lord allover again in the hearts and homes of my sisters inChrist. With many thanks for your trust and confidence.

WANDA SINCLAIR

Daughters-at-Large 1991-2000I thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve as a

member of the National Council of Daughters of the Kingfor the past nine years. The experience has given me opportunities for spiritual growth by being a part of a diverseand multi-talented group of dedicated and committedleaders in DOK and from the wise and Godly counsel of ourNational Chaplain. My experience also gave me greaterappreciation of "Community" that is offered through theOrder, as we share in the struggles, challenges, victoriesand joys with one another. I personally experienced muchstrength from the "Community" when I dealt with familydeaths and personal illness. We explored and dealt withold and new issues to help Daughters of the King beinstruments of God's work and peace in our own environments and the world.

I have seen our membership grow by leaps andbounds in this country and the development and growth ofour International Chapters through encouragement andsupport by our National Council of DOK.

I was a part of the historic council that voted topurchase property to establish the National Headquartersfor our National Office in Woodstock, Georgia. In our115-year history, we had never "owned" our own property,so this was a bold and com-ageous step for all of us,believing God was leading us into this venture.

As DAL Chair, I encouraged the appointment ofDiocesan DAL chairmen to help keep all DAL informedand included in DOK Assemblies. It is my dream thatevery Diocese have a DAL chairman to correspond withevery DAL in her Diocese, which is the "grass roots" leveland inclusion of DALs in community. I have encouragedDAL members, through articles in The Royal Cross andthrough personal correspondence, to stay linked to thecommunity and to "bloom where you are planted." We areall blessed to be a blessing, and each of us possessesspecial gifts, skills, and talents for the extension of Christ'sKingdom on earth.

In love and for His sake.

Evangelism 1985-1988; First Vice President 1988-1991;Master's Fund 1997-2000

As I complete my third and final term on the NationalCouncil and look back over my three terms of office, onething is clear. Each time I have been elected to serve onthe National Coimcil has been a time of major change inmy life. I was first elected in 1985 and served rmder EthylRipley as Evangelism Chairman. I married Don Brownthe following spring and moved from California toPennsylvania. That triennial the Order played catch upwith the Holy Spirit as He led a group of Roman Catholicwomen to form the first Roman Catholic Affiliate Chapterbefore we changed the bylaws to permit the formation ofaffiliate chapters.

Elected again in 1988,1 served as first vice president\mder Whitty Bohmer. During that triennial, Don and Imoved to Namibia and I completed my term as a "nonresident" vice president. Shortly after my election to my

Reflections...current term of office serving xmder Sue Schlanbusch, Donand I moved from California to Scotland, and once againI was a "non-resident" Council member. Praise God for

reasonable air fares from Glasgow to the United States. This triennial the excitement centered aroimd the purchaseof a National Office. Serving as Master's Fund Chairmanhas been a somce of both joy and sadness. Joy, as I was ableto become acquainted with our wonderful Master's Fimdrecipients through "snail" mail and e-mail; sadness as Ihad to write to many deserving women to tell them theirrequest for a grant had been denied due to a lack of funds.

Serving on the National Council has been both a joyand a challenge, and I thank my sister Council memberswho have allowed me to serve even when I served from a

distance.

JEAN HICKS

Province V, 1991-1994; Evangelism 1994-1997;Service 1997-2000

What can I say in looking back at nine years except"thanks for the memories." And what do I know about

you? You are awesome and a wonder!

Province Presidents

JO MELOON

Province I, 1997-2000I am very happy to have been the representative to

the National Council of the Order of the Daughters of theKing from Province I. These three years have been excitingones filled with growth, not only in numbers of membersand chapters, but in the times I met my Lord, Jesus Christ,in these members and chapters.

His Daughters' work throughout the province fromthe top of New Hampshire to the coast of Maine, from theBerkshires of Massachusetts to Narragansett Bay ofRhode Island, and to the Connecticut shores of LongIsland Sound is exemplary of doing unto others what Hewould have us do. Their evangelism and prayer chains arestrong, their financial giving is faithful, and their serviceprojects are ingenious and interesting. I am so blessed andhappy to be representing them for the next triennium.

I offer my sincere thanks to and for the NationalOffice (Linda, Sharon, Dorothy, Louise, Micki, and all ofthe new employees) for listening to my needs, offeringadvice, and gentling me with their soft Southern voices.

The officers and members of National Coimcil are

certainly those of God's chosen. They were my sisters aswell as Daughters—a family with all of the differentpersonalities, ideas, thinking, and depths of spiritualstrengths. They will be my Mends forever.

CAROL GASKILL

Province II, 1997-2000As I sit at my computer (Praise the Lord, I am slowly

moving into the foture) listening to Pachelbel Forever bythe Sea (a CD that I picked up in Denver at the NationalCoimcil Meeting in April), I hear the sounds of the seaand birds, the beautiful melodies and God's peace fills mysoul and body with overflowing love. It is the love that Ihave received from all the Daughters of Province II, intheir prayers and words of encouragement, that has madethis journey a rewarding one. It is sharing in their joy fora new Daughter or a new chapter. It is sharing in theirsorrow for the death of a Daughter, the resignation of aDaughter, or a chapter disbandment. It is the sharedprayer lists, minutes of assemblies, and newsletters. Most

of all, it is the love of understanding the difficulty inreaching me—no answering machine and no e-mail. Thereis hope for the future—think of the computer as a first step.

And to my Sisters and Brother on Council, I thankyou for your patience and tutelage. I will ever be gratefulfor your wisdom, your laughter, and for raising the bar inleadership. Thank you. I am getting better.

It J. BRAGG

Province III, 1994-2000When asked to give reflections for serving on National

Council, I had to stop and think back to the beginning. Iwas excited, wondering what was expected for serving, nervous about being on National Council and the fact thatI was meeting new people. Looking back, I believe everyonewas at the same place. My first year was about buildinga community, waiting on the Lord and loving my fellowsisters. After six years, I am still building communities, waiting on the the Lord and loving my fellow sisters. Isn'tbeing a Daughter all about that?

I now know that God chooses you to be on Council. All He wants is a willing vessel. I have also learned thatserving on National Council is all WORK. I had thoughtthat the ladies serving on Council were having a ballshopping. Was I in for a rude awakening! Serving onCouncil is being accountable to every Daughter in yourprovince as well as those in the Order. During my sixyears, every decision made was in the best interest of theOrder and for "all" and not about "self." After each meetingI could rest my head and know that I served, I was willing, and the Order is God's Order. The sooner realized, thesooner we can experience God's joy and peace as we serveHim, for His sake!

What was special to me about serving on NationalCouncil was having prayer partners. I am going to missgetting a new one! However, I will take it upon myself topray for the new Council and they can know that we arein community as prayer partners. I do thank God for thesix special persons He gave me as prayer partners to praydaily for, and I also know there are many others out thereprajdng. It is my hope that none of them will stop prayingfor me, especially, since I am not standing for NationalCouncil 2000-2003.

JEANMARANI

Province IV, 1997-2000The Fourth Province has been truly blessed by our

Lord. There has been continual growth in new and reactivated Senior and Junior chapters. Established chaptershave received a steady flow of new members. Although wehave had chapters disband because of the age of members, their health problems, or because members have moved toanother location, the growth pattern has continued. Thecrowning event was the institution on March 25, 2000, ofthe Diocese of Louisiana as the 20th diocesan assembly ina province of 20 dioceses. No further assembling required!

The ebb and flow of members within the province is areflection of life's cycles. Thus we have learned how Godprovides for changing conditions. I am grateful for ourgrowth and what it has taught me about being a Daughter.

An exciting facet of growth within the Fourth Provincehas come through evidence of the deep love for the Orderby our Daughters-at-Large. Many of them have moved toa parish without a chapter. Once established, these DALshave set about creating a chapter and drawing womeninto the Order. I have also found women, long inactive.

THE ROYAL CROSS Page 7

Page 8: The T^yal Cross€¦ · Tilley, Deborah Tischler, Barbara Tobin, and Barbara Ward. Please pray for these women willing to serve the Order at this time. Council named our new offices

who have not returned their crosses. Rather, they havekept them for the day when another person began achapter and they coiild step forward. Once a Daughter, always a Daughter at heart.

My faith has deepened as I listened and learnedthrough the anointed teaching of oiu: chaplains andpriests. Ladies, we are truly blessed by these committedmen and women. And I have never met a clergy personwho did not extol the joys of having an active chapter ofDaughters in the parish.

Daughters have stepped forward to carry the Order toCuba, Honduras, Uruguay, Kenya, Puerto Rico, theDominican Republic, Brazil, and other areas. Many havegone as short-term missionaries, members of a Mercy Shipteam, or a parish work force. Others have been "senders,"giving to Self-Denial or the project itself. All have prayed. The Decade of Evangelism has been strong in Province IV.

Throughout the triennium we have worshiped andstudied together at two yearly Kanuga Assemblies, thedioceses have all held at least one assembly and mosthave had a retreat as well. Chapter activities are richreservoirs of study, prayer, quiet days, service, projects, but above all, strongholds of prayer. Do we have need togrow in faith and practice? Yes, and we know how becausewe are Daughters of the King, living for His sake.

CHERYL WOiTGEN

Province V, 1997-2000The past three years of service to the women of

Province V through the Order as Province President havepresented me with countless opportunities to grow closerto our Lord and Savior. I have had the great opportimityto worship in wonderful chmrches, gardens, missions, andlibraries. I have been challenged to offer support for myfaith, which served to strengthen my faith. I have foundcordiality and kindness all over the country. I have alsobeen reminded that no matter what we pin over ourhearts we are sinners. Redeemed sinners, but sinnersnonetheless. Learning to deal appropriately with peopleduring trying occasions is a continuing lesson.

I am thankful for the pleasures and pains of serviceas Province V Representative. I am a better Daughterthan I was three years ago, and I am challenged to growso I may serve Him more fully each and every day.

MARY AGNES GRISSOM

Province VI, 1991-2000As I sit overlooking a field of wildflowers, reflecting

on my nine years as Provincial Representative of theProvince of Lakes, Mountains and Plains known asProvince VI, I am filled with great joy and gratitude.Province VI covers a massive area of unsettled land andhas given me tremendous times of fellowship and prayeras I have traveled by van with my sisters aroxmd the eightdioceses (Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, Iowa, Nebraska,North Dakota, South Dakota, and Colorado) which constitute our province. The vast variety and beauty of God'screation and landscape have touched my life immensely. But even more so has the vast variety and beauty of God'speople whom I have met in my travels for the Order.

I am humbled to have been allowed by God to serve inthis capacity in this particular time when the Order isgrowing and flourishing in our province. It is a blessing toget to see firsthand (Jod's calling women to band together inprayer through the vows of the Order. What a privilege ithas been to sit with my sisters at the Niobr£u*a Convocations

in the summer on the various Lakota Dakota Reservations

and to travel the inner city of Minneapolis with the youngpeople to honor those who work while we sleep. It hasbeen exciting to see the hunger of women to pray and thento see them being given a community to share that hungerwith and to form new chapters or revive former chapters.

It has been a great source of joy to witness the chaptersspringing up like the wildflowers—some from seed that arehome grown, and some begun by Daughters trsmsplantedfrom areas far away. Some chapters are in remote areas, far from the bustle of the big city, while others are in themiddle of the bustle. Each has been called and planted byGod and shaped to do His will where she is planted ortransplanted to pray, serve, and evangelize.

It is with a sense of awe and humility that I pass thisposition on to those who will follow after me to be giventhe chance to be blessed as I have been blessed. What an

awesome close to my time in office that it should climaxwith being the hosting province for the Daughters'Triennial 2000 in Denver.

I pray for God to continue to grow Daughters in Hisfields, particularly here in Province VI, that we might be aplanting to do our part to spread His Kingdom.

Province VIII, 1997-2000As outgoing province president, I am honored to

report that Province VII has lived "Revival" during thepast three years. Chapters have had charters restored andtwo diocesan assemblies have been restored: Diocese of

Northwest Texas and the Diocese of Arkansas. Junior

Daughters of the King have grown across the province tomore than 20 chapters! Total Senior and Junior DOKmembership is over 4,300. Our Provincial Assembly inFebruary had a record attendance of 180, and we dedicated25 percent of our budget to missions. We have made historyby forming the first Diocesan Assembly of Roman CatholicDOK in Houston, Texas, on June 17, 2000. The Gloiy BoimdSingers will lead our Denver Triennial worship and music. Thanks be to God for His blessings on our province!

Province VIII, 1996-2000The Order in Province VIII has been blessed with

amazing growth. Chapters are growing and new chaptersare forming. Women and girls are seeking more opportunities to gather together to share the stories of God's presencein their lives and to pray. The prayers and service ofDaughters of the King encourage and strengthen themission of the whole church.

It has been a great honor and privilege to representthe Order in this beautiful province of the nine westernstates including Alaska and Hawaii. The Daughters I havevisited throughout our province have inspired me. Wehave shared in glorious retreats and assemblies and havewitnessed together the power of God's presence in ourlives. I thank God for the opportunity to serve, and I prayfor the leaders who will be our lamplighters for the nextTriennium that by their faith the Good News of Jesus willbe told and the kingdom of God will grow.

"Glory to God whose power working in us can doinfinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to Himfrom generation to generation in the chimch and in ChristJesus forever and ever." Ephesians 3:20, 21

junior Daughters^ fter the hype by the world (and some Christians)J^of some kind of terror or disaster to befall us atthe turn of the millennium, we give God the gloryfor the smooth transition into the year 2000. Therealization is that there are changes to come, but wehave a pre-prepared plan in Jesus Christ. We, theOrder of the Daughters of the King, have receivedthe Great Commission, "Go ye into all the world andpreach the gospel to every creature," Mark 16:15; andthe call to pray, "Praying always with all prayer andsupplication in the Spirit, and watching thereuntowith all perseverance and supplication for all saints,"Ephesians 6:18.

When I think of the Junior Daughter chaptersand how they have grown in numbers in the pastthree years, I can only hope and pray that we, theSenior Daughters, have taken our call and commission to heart for Jiinior Daughters. The mission fieldis literally in our back yard because evangelismbegins at home. Therefore, as we form new Juniorchapters, let us become cognizant of the fact that wecan follow up on our Great Commission in our homes,in our churches, in our schools, and in our workplaces—all of which can be observed by our yovmgpeople, the walking, breathing, human sponges. What we expect them to get we must be able to give.

In the past three years I have attended JuniorDaughters Candlelight Services, Admissions,Gatherings, Assemblies, and Holy Innocents DayServices, where Junior Daughters were invited andwelcomed. There is no doubt that the chapters whoparticipate in the opportunity to congregate arestrengthening their evangelism wings by startingand sharing on their own.

All of our Junior Daughters are fgmtastic girls andwe want to give to them the skills and determinationto be a witness for Christ. There is a tremendous

pressure on our children today from the world. Wedo not need to put any more on them, but we needto give them tools to live by. Let us evangelize ourchildren. Let us encourage and support them, remembering them as a significant part of our GreatCommission. As we grow in relationship with ourSavior, let us grow in relationship with our childrenand Junior Daughters. Our Lord will give us boththe opportunity and the inner strength to be Hiswitness at home and abroad.

(cM'£ £an (DuxMany of you know of Morgan Mitchell, the little

boy on our DDK Evangelism Video who received aheart transplant August, 1995, at Texas Children'sHospital. Following a routine heart biopsy it wasdetermined that Morgan had developed coronaryartery disease and would need a second heart transplant. After months of many prayers nationwide,Morgan received a perfectly matched heart onSeptember 6 at Texas Children's Hospital.

In February of this year Morgan had anotherbiopsy of his heart, and the result was very good.Currently he is pla3dng sports at school. He will beseven years old on June 9 and the Make a WishFoundation is sending Morgan and his family toDisney World for a week.

Morgan's family, friends, and prayer warriorscontinue to pray confidently that the Lord is healinghim according to His will.

We are called to have that kind of faith in the

Lord when we pray. The Lord keeps His promises.

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "yes" in Christ. And through him the"Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.

—II Corinthians 1:20

As we pray for the sick who come across our path, pray with confidence the words of James 5:14-16. Isany one of you sick? He should call the elders of thechurch to pray over him and anoint him with oil inthe name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faithwill make the sick person well; the Lord will raisehim up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and prayfor each other so that you may be healed. The prayerof a righteous man is powerful and effective.

We give thanks and praise for the miracle of anew heart for Morgan and continue to pray for hiscontinual and uncomplicated healing. We give thanksfor the family whose child's heart gave life to Morgan.

A Citany of ServiceThe following litany was written by 95 Daughters in the Diocese of Colorado after an all-day presentation

on Service by Jean Hicks, national Service Chair. A big "thank you" goes to Julie Wahtola who served as editor.Jesus has given us the blueprint for Christian Service in Matthew 25:37-40.

A Litany of Service

I was hungry ...You nourished me since I was in my mother's womb .. . You called me by name and nourished me through thesacrament of Baptism . . . You supplied my needs through the love and guidance of parents, family, friends, teachers, and clergy . .. You feed me with your Body and Blood . . . You strengthened and encouraged me withChristian community. Help me to feed others as You have fed me.

Lord, hear our prayer.

I was thirsty ...to know You, and You gave me the Word ... for someone to listen, and You had ears to hear ... for acceptance, and You called me by name ... for forgiveness, and You gave me new life ... to be loved, and You sent your Sonto walk with me ... for hope, and You gave me your promises ... for wisdom, and You led me ... for healing, and You touched me. Help us through your Holy Spirit to satisfy the thirsts of others.

Lord, hear our prayer.

I was a stranger...and when I fussed in church, you blessed me . .. and I looked strange, but you accepted me .. . and when I

was homeless, you invited me in . . . and when I visited your chiirch, you invited me to coffee . .. and I wasestranged, and you embraced me .. . and you smiled, and I felt love .. . and you spoke to me and I felt comfort.. . and as I grew strange with age you honored me. Lord, in whatsoever guise You come to us a stranger, maywe respond to your needs.

Lord, hear our prayer.

I was naked ...

Lord, open our eyes to the nakedness around and within us . . . enable us to open our hearts to those whoare physically naked .. . teach us to cover those who through shame have felt naked ... empower us to so loveYou that we can clothe our neighbors with dignity and love .. . clothe us with your Spirit that we may be acovering to others in their nakedness.

Lord, hear our prayer.

I was sick ..,

and you laid your healing hands on me ... I was sick, £ind you prayed for me ... I was sick, and you werepresent and listened to me ... I was sick, and you cared for my personal needs ... I was sick, and you gave mestrength to endure ... I was sick of mind, and you soothed me ... I was sick with grief, and you helped me toforgive ... I was sick, and you gave me the grace to know when to ask for help. There are so many ways toreach out to those who are sick in body, mind, and spirit; show us. Lord, what You would have us do.

Lord, hear our prayer.

I was in prison ...Lord, open our eyes, hearts, and spirits to recognize the prisons that hold ourselves and others captive . ..make us aware of and sensitive to how we are bound by pain, isolation, loneliness, addictions, depression, pride, possessions, fear, and all imagined limitations .. . free us from the lack of faith that imprisons us. May we notturn aside or neglect to visit whenever we see You imprisoned.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine ...Thank you. Lord, for seeing Christ in me .. . help me to see Christ in others . . . help all Daughters to recognizeYou in all our opportunities to. be of service . . . help us to be Christ to others by being honest enough to let themknow when we are hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, or in prison and by being humble enough to receivetheir service. Not our will, but thine be done.

Lord, hear our prayer. May we always serve For His Sake.

Speaking through his prophet Isaiah, our God assures us that He does hear our prayer:

Before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear. (Isaiah 65:4)

We encourage persons whohave responded to the callof our Lord to serve in His

vineyard. Consider their cost.If we mean what we pray for, more funds need to come in to

the Master's Fund to enable

the Order to fund all of the

appropriate requests that comein. In 1999 we funded 21 out of

40 applications.The harvest is great—the

workers are few. Let us bless

those who respond to the callwith our prayers and moreadequate resources.

In 1998 the amount of

scholarships awarded, includingthe grants to Provinces, wasapproximately $32,000. Withsome 17,000 Daughters in ourOrder this averaged out to$1.68 per year per member. Allapplications received then werefunded.

This past year with 18,000members in the Order the

funds received amoimted to

$24,400. This averages out to$1.38 per year per member. Wewere imable to fund all of the

requests (21 of 40).Oiu" prayers are a vital

support for our recipients andthey value the prayers verymuch. Occasional notes of

c::^ . . .After taking part in the Assembly of the

Northwest, Nancy Wyant, Kathleen and AndyNyhuis, Leigh Hartman, Sally Nichols and Iflew to Fairbanks, Alaska. We arrived onSunday, May 21 at 11:40 p.m. to the open armsof Shirley Gordon (Bishop Gordon's widow) andGinny Doctor, Diocesan Missionary. It was warmand much like dusk in the lower 48 states. This

trip was to bring our work as Daughters of theKing to as many of the bush villages as possible.

The first two days we acclimated to the timechange, etc. and traveled to North Pole, Alaska,to visit St. Jude's Church and, of course, Santa'sHouse. We were able to meet with the parishsecretary and the assistant priest at St. Jude's.Both days we were in Fairbanks we began bymeeting with Bishop MacDonald and his stafffor a Disciples Gospel based Bible study, whichis a simple daily study within a short worshipservice, used in every parish in Alaska. I highlyrecommend it. (It can be obtained at the NationalChurch Center in New York.)

On Wednesday Nancy, Leigh, Sally andShirley Gordon left Fairbanks in the rain forthe North Slope villages of Kivillna and Ft.Hope. Kathleen, Andy and I left for Ft. Yukon,a native village north of the Arctic Circle. Ourhousing in both areas was somewhat primitivebut the people were all, without exception, warmand welcoming. We all felt that their conditionsat all levels were valid missionary fields. Theyhave heard and know the Gospel and couldteach us much in that light I am sure, but theirlifestyle conditions drastically need our concernand support. Because we live in homes andcities with ready access to resources, it is hardto believe that people who share our country

can subsist on so little. Our help is particularlyneeded in this missionary field as well asabroad. These truly are our neighbors.

We clowned and spent three hours teachingand appl5dng makeup in Ft.Yukon, sharedprayer, praise and Eucharist in the log church ^there. A priest couple with two small boys—one 15 months and the other 10-days-old—serve that parish. In Ninana we clowned andcelebrated with Bishop Mark at a Eucharist, followed by a party and lots of sharing. TheNorth Slope group experienced similar events. i

Throughout the trip the native people visitedwith Shirley Gordon whom they still admireand love from her years of ministry in theirmidst. God is so present in the vastness of thisawesome 50th state. I feel blessed and humbled

to have been a part of this team.Four new chapters should be borne of these

efforts. We will need to have loving chaptersadopt these new sisters and pay their initiationfee. If your heart is moved to this ministry ofgifting, please contact me.

Jrom the executive DirectorWhat glad tidings I bring! The purchase of

the Margaret J. Franklin Center on Friday,February 11, 2000, began a new chapter for theOrder. After having been in a variety of settingsover the past 115 years, the Order crossed overinto new territory with the purchase of fouroffice suites in Weatherstone Office Park in

Woodstock, Georgia. Three imits are connectedwith interior doors so that the administrative

offices encompass 1,988 square feet and thechapel/large meeting room, which includes anarthex, has its own 994 square feet. Thefourth office of 994 square feet is currently onthe market to be leased until such a time as the

Order will need additional space for growth.Approaching a significant anniversary with

the Order, I am reflecting on how this and othertransitions affect oixr journey together. ShortlyI will celebrate my tenth anniversary with theOrder of the Daughters of the King.

Interestingly, I've learned that the onlything that is constant is change! Change can bedifficult but it is a necessary part of our livestogether. It can bring wonderful new opportunities as it brings new people into the circles ofour lives. Daily I experience the perseveranceand dedication of women with a constant

mission—^that of prayer, service, and sharingthe good news of Christ Jesus. While we enjoyrich traditions together, we are opening ourhearts to welcome new people and new gifts.Change makes all that happen.

So to those who feel that they have beenDaughters long enough to have had tea withMargaret J. Franklin in 1885 and to those whotook the vow of prayer and service just lastweek, I bid you welcome! Come and see yourbeautiful new home in Weatherstone. We'd love

to see your face at our door.

Linda

Jrom the editor's DeskLast year it became evident that the workload

of our Executive Director, Linda Patterson, hadexpanded beyond human limits. With the Order'sgrowth necessitating additional staff and thepurchase of office space, Linda's responsibilitiesincreased significantly. It was the decision of theNational Council to relieve some of the pressureby moving the editorial oversight of The RoyalCross out of the National Office. In the Fall, asPublic Relations Chairman, I assumed the role ofeditor of the magazine.

It has been a wonderful learning experiencefor me. It has also been frustrating because weare not able to publish all the articles that yousend, especially the notices of new chapters andnew Daughters. Because the number of chaptersis growing dramatically on a weekly basis, wesimply do not have room to print the informationon these chapters in a quarterly pubHcation of 16pages. We researched the cost of adding pages toeach current issue as well as publishing TheRoyal Cross more frequently so that we couldaccommodate the volume of chapter information. We regret that the cost of either alternative isprohibitive given our current dues structure.

THE ROYAL CROSS

Several months ago it was decided that it wouldbe helpful to have a statement of editorial policyfor The Royal Cross. The Editorial Board draftedsuch a policy for the magazine and presented it tothe National Council at their meeting in April. Itwas accepted as follows:

"The Royal Cross is the official publication ofthe Order of the Daughters of the King, an Order inthe Episcopal Church dedicated to prayer, service andevangelism. It is the editorial policy of The RoyalCross to publish information which promotes thepurpose of the Order and is of interest to our generalreadership. The decision to publish submitted itemsis at the discretion of the Editor; items in questionwill be reviewed by the Editorial Board. We encourage the communication of local news throughchapter, diocesan and provincial newsletters."

Thank you for being faithful readers of The RoyalCross. I welcome your comments on the magazine.

Almighty God, we give you thanks for redeeming us through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Bythe power of The Holy Spirit illumine our hearts through your grace and power so that others maysee in us the quality of life inspired by your grace. Give us vision to see the salvation offered to usthrough the death and resurrection of Jesus, and to accept with grateful hearts what Jesus hasalready done for us. Through the power of The Holy Spirit, strengthen us to embrace the movementof God, in and through our lives today, bringing us courage now, and hope in the future throughOur Lord's promise of eternal life. Help us through prayer, participation in the sacraments, thestudy of scripture, and in our interactions with others, to express personal repentance, and discoverthe power of redemption. Forgive us, heal us, restore us, revive us, and bring us to wholeness wherewe may daily accept the grace of the love of God already there for us. We ask these things throughJesus Christ Our Lord to whom with You and The Holy Spirit be all honor now and forever. Amen.
