Radical Reformers

• 100s of Protestant sects developed, some more radical than others

– Anabaptists• Rejected infant baptism

– Baptists, Quakers, Mennonites and Amish can trace their ancestry back to the Anabaptists

English Reformation

• John Wycliffe was calling for reform back in the early 1300s

• By 1520 English clergy debated the idea of reform, however it was not the work of religious leaders but was the job of King Henry VIII

• His marriage was an attempt to unite Spain and England

The Wives of Henry VIII

I spy an attractive lady – in-waiting called Anne Boleyn. If only I could

marry her instead. Will the Pope give me a

divorce?

The Church is very rich. I need money for my

luxurious court. If only I could get my hands on it.

The new Protestant ideas are spreading

in Germany. Princes there are reforming their churches and

throwing out the Catholic Church.

Some people in England like the new Protestant ideas. They believe that the Bible should be in English not Latin.

Henry VIII and the English Reformation

• Henry VIII stood firmly against the Protestant Revolt

• In 1527 Henry wanted to end his marriage with Catharine of Aragon because she only produced one child, Mary– Henry wanted a boy– Henry asked the pope to annul the marriage

and his request was refused

Break with Rome

• With the help of the British Parliament Henry passed the Act of Supremacy which made Henry not the Pope the head of the Church in England

• Those who opposed Henry were tried for treason– Sir Thomas More was executed and later became a

Saint for his stand against Henry VIII

Catherine of Aragon

• Born in Spain• Had been married to Henry’s

brother Arthur who died• Married Henry in 1509• She had six children but only

one survived – a daughter, Mary

• Henry divorced Catherine as he had fallen in love with her lady in waiting

Mary I (Bloody Mary)Queen of England 1553-1558

• Marries Philip II of Spain

• Tires to bring Catholicsim back into England

• Has no children and dies in 1558

Anne Boleyn

• Born in England• Had two children but

only one survived, a daughter, Elizabeth

• Anne was arrested for being unfaithful to Henry

• She was beheaded

Elizabeth IQueen of England 1558-1603

• Never Marries

• Known as the Virgin Queen

• Seen as one of the greatest Queens in English History

Jane Seymour

• Born in England• Jane was betrothed to

Henry within 24 hrs of Anne’s death

• She had one child, a son, Edward

• Jane died two weeks after giving birth

Edward VIKing of England 1547-1553

• Takes over the throne when his father dies– He was 9 years of age– Dies of TB

Anne of Cleves

• Born in Germany• Henry had a painting of

her but when he met her he thought she was ugly

• They married but did not live together

• They had no children• Henry divorced her

Catherine Howard

• Born in England• She was the lady in

waiting for Anne• She was very attractive• There were no children• Henry heard rumours she

was being unfaithful• She was beheaded

Catherine Parr

• Born in England• She had been married

twice before• They had no children• Henry married her to

look after him in his old age

• She outlived him as Henry died in 1547
