From the Pastor I’m sitting down to write the sermon outline for July 1. Although all seems lost in the reading from Lamenta-tions, there is still of glimmer of hope...faith that God will not forsake the people forever. Jesus demonstrates God’s healing presence when the woman who has been

suffering a flow of blood for twelve years is healed when she touch-es the hem of Jesus’ robe.

There are so many throughout the world who need to hear these stories of hope and healing. Their conditions are as bad or, perhaps, even worse. Political unrest throughout the world. Personal issues of homelessness, abuse, addictions, hunger. Environmental issues of pollution of air, water, and land. Climate change brought on by the burning of fossil fuels. “Isms”: racism, sexism, classism, and ableism, to name a few. My list of unfavorable situations is far from complete.

The Theology of the Cross reminds us that God is in the midst of these situations. God has not abandoned us. God is with us in the struggles we face as well as in the times we rejoice. The Theology of the Cross reminds us that God stronger than anything, including death.

Thanks be to God!

God’s Work, Our Hands Twice a year our members prepare a potluck meal for

our neighbors who live at the Century II Apartments. Thirty-one residents were served on June 24.

Residents were treated to delicious homemade food with plenty for leftovers. Table decorations were provided by the kids who attended VBS this year. Residents were reminded that God loves them and that they are welcome at the table.

Thank you to all who provided food and those who served it as we did God’s work with our hands.

VBS Augustana’s Vacation Bible School was

held June 11-14. Ten of our young people and three guests enjoyed hearing stories about Jesus and meals.

One of the craft projects involved making paper quilt squares emphasizing the theme of the evening. The four squares said: “I thank God for you.” “Love your neighbor as your-self.” “Live together in harmony.” “Welcome each other.”

These squares were attached to poster

board to make the “quilt” and the kids got to take them home after worship on June 17. They did a really nice job!

Each evening we received an offering des-ignated to go to the Society of St. Andrew (www.endhunger.org). Since 1979, Society of St. Andrew has distributed more than 2.42 billion servings of food, reaching all 48 contig-uous United States and the District of Colum-bia. Each year more than 30,000 volunteers, both people who are in need and people who have plenty, come together to glean fruits and vegetables in fields and orchards or to bag already harvested produce.

The result of all those volunteers pitch-ing in is that healthy food reaching hungry people at a cost of about 3¢ a serving. Every year, Society of St. Andrew volunteers help put 82-100 million servings of food on the tables of their neighbors in need!

We collected $50!!! With this offering, the Society of St. Andrew can prepare and share 1667 meals to feed hungry people!

Thank you, VBS families, for your gener-osity!

Liturgical Commemorations in July Sunday, July 1. Catherine Winkworth, died 1878; John Mason Neale, died 1866; hymn translators. Neale was an English priest who specialized in the translation of Latin and Greek hymns into English.

Winkworth lived in Manchester, England, and devoted herself to translating German hymns. Almost all Eng-lish-speaking hymnals include many of their translations.

Tuesday, July 3. Thomas, Apostle. Though frequently remembered as "doubting Thomas," this apostle also demonstrated a willingness to suf-

fer and die with Jesus (John 11:16), and finally claimed the risen Christ as "my Lord and my God!" By tradi-tion, he later worked as a missionary in India. Long commemorated on December 21, Thomas's celebration is moved to July 3 in agreement with ecumenical calendars.

Friday, July 6. Jan Hus, martyr, died 1415. Hus was a Bohemian (present-day Czech Republic) priest who spoke against abuses in the church, and

was seen by Martin Luther as his predecessor in the reforming movement. He was found guilty of heresy by a council of the church, and burned at the stake.

Wednesday, July 11. Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino, died around 540. Benedict is known as the father of the Western monastic movement. Educated in Rome, he went to live as

a hermit, and eventually gathered a community of monks around him. He wrote a rule for living in monaster-ies that is used by Benedictines and adapted by others.

Thursday, July 12. Nathan Söderblom, Bishop of Uppsala, died 1931. A winner of the Nobel Prize for peace for his efforts to unite peoples after the First World War, Söderblom

also called attention to the revival of early church worship principles, and helped to lay the groundwork for the World Council of Churches.

Tuesday, July 17. Bartolomé de Las Casas, missionary to the Indies, died 1566. A native of Spain, Las Casas first came to the Western hemisphere while serving in the military. Granted a

large estate with indigenous slaves, he freed them after he was ordained a priest. He worked in the Caribbe-an and Central America to improve the lives of the native peoples.

Sunday, July 22. Mary Magdalene, Apostle. Sometimes called "the apostle to the apostles" because she told them of her encounter with the risen Lord,

Mary was a woman of Galilee who followed Jesus throughout his ministry. She was present at Jesus' crucifix-ion and his burial.

Monday, July 23. Birgitta of Sweden, renewer of the church, died 1373. Birgitta married at age thirteen and had four daughters. Widowed at age thirty-eight, she gave all that she

owned to the poor, and founded a community of monks and nuns led by a woman. Her work is continued to-day by the Society of St. Birgitta.

Wednesday, July 25. James, Apostle. James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee, fishermen by trade before their call from Jesus. He

was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, and his death is the only one recorded in scripture (Acts 12:1-2).

Saturday, July 28. Johann Sebastian Bach, died 1750; Heinrich Schütz, died 1672; George Frederick Han-del, died 1759; musicians.

These three German-born musicians have done much to enrich the life of the church. Schütz was an early master who focused on settings of biblical texts. Bach wrote over 300 cantatas along with works for organ and instrumental pieces, and has been called the "fifth evangelist" for the way he proclaimed the gospel in music. Handel's great work, Messiah, is a setting of scriptural texts.

Sunday, July 29. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany. Friends of Jesus, Mary and Martha are remembered for the hospitality of their home that they offered

him—Martha focused on serving their guest, and Mary on listening to him. Their brother Lazarus was raised from the dead as a sign of the greater resurrection to come.

Sunday, July 29. Olaf, King of Norway, martyr, died 1030. Considered the patron saint of Norway, Olaf went from a life of piracy to becoming Christian and declaring

himself king of Norway. He revised the laws and tried to administer them fairly. Driven from Norway in a re-bellion, he was killed in battle trying to regain his kingdom.

Worship Helper Stewardship Each Sunday there are a handful of

people who are noticed as being wor-ship leaders, but it takes many more to help a worship service happen. Some of these people might not see their work as a ministry, but it is. It is also worship stewardship...taking care of things hav-ing to do with worship.

People are welcomed with smiling faces in the narthex by the ushers and greeters. Acolytes, an assisting min-ister, the pastor, and communion as-sistants are visible leaders and help-ers to the worship experience. The choir, organist, and pianist play very important roles in supporting our musical worship. The technical assistants pro-vide the visual tools for the various parts of the liturgy on the screen. The Altar Guild has already done the setup for the sacraments and is ready to clean up after worship.

We can use more people in each of these groups to assist with the ongo-ing worship at Augustana. Is there one or more of these positions that inter-est you? We’d be glad to have more helpers.

Thank you.

Ushers for July Tom Peterson (Captain), Chris Liberto, Darold Sea, Martin Sea.

Augustana Memorial Garden Currently there are three members or family of members whose ashes were put into the Augustana Memorial Garden in the south-east corner of the east parking lot. We are allowed to do this accord-ing to Sioux City policy as long as we inter ashes only; not boxes, urns, or bags. To that end we have established the following Memori-al Garden Policy:

Memorial Garden Policy Augustana Lutheran Church of Sioux City, Iowa has established a memorial garden on the church’s premises to serve as a place for the interment of the ash remains of members of the church or their immediate family. Interment shall mean the burying of ashes (ashes cannot be buried in any type of container) in the Memorial Garden located on the southeast end of the east parking lot. At the option of the appropriate authority requesting the interment of the ashes, a nameplate may be attached to the memorial plaque lo-cated in the east entrance to the church building. The cost for the engraving of this nameplate will be the responsibility of the appropri-ate authority requesting interment. No separate memorial markers may be placed in the Memorial Garden. If for some unforeseen reason the congregation dissolves its proper-ty or moves from 600 Court Street, Sioux City, Iowa, the congrega-tion bears no responsibility for subsequent maintenance of the me-morial garden and memorial plaque. Now therefore it is agreed: Interment Authority Church ____________________________________ ___________________________________ Name (printed) President (printed) ____________________________________ ___________________________________ Signature Signature-President Congregation Council Augustana Lutheran Church,

Sioux City, Iowa ____________________________________ Person being interred (if different from above authority) Date: ______________________ Date: ______________________ Let the office know if you have any questions or would like a copy of this policy. Completed forms will be filed in the office until the appropriate time. It is highly recommended that anyone considering this, would no-tify family members of your wishes. In this same vein, forms are also available for people to fill out regarding favorite scripture, hymns, and other details in funeral planning.
