Jessica Cecil, like many of us, struggled as a college student. She
was not sure if she would be able to go to college and her parents
did not know much about college which made it harder for her.
She struggled to pay her bills, work, take classes and balancing
personal and work related ties. She attended school at her local
community college and then she transferred and got her bache-
lors degree in psychology. Jessica knew while working as a gradu-
ate assistant in career services at a university that she loved helping
students and answering student’s questions, and that is why she con-
tinued to work in education. She later completed two masters in Student Affairs in Higher Educa-
tion and Organizational Leadership at Western Kentucky University. She is currently working on
her third M.A. in Psychology at Union College also in Kentucky. Jessica previously served as direc-
tor of TRiO at Owensboro Community and Technical College from 2015 to 2017, where they
served 140 students each year. She stated that LCC has so many opportunities for students to con-
nect with different programs, activities, guest speakers and develop professionally. TRiO offers
many opportunities for students to participate such as cultural field trips, four—year institution
visitations and financial workshops. Jessica’s experiences have helped her to share and teach stu-
dents what she has learned. Jessica stated, “TRiO is an amazing program that offers support to
students who need it. The staff of TRiO SSS at LCC are enthusiastic, passionate, and love what they
do. It is wonderful to be a part of such a great team and get to work with such cool students.”

Student Success Stories
Success comes with many struggles and tribulations and that is what TRiO students went though and ways they overcome and made their successful journey.
We asked three questions and found her answers very inspirational.
This is Daniela B’s story.
Questions:
1. What are the struggles that brought you here and got to where you are today?
2. How has TRIO helped you keep on track to reach your goals?
3. Tips for students?
Interview:
1. “The first time I went to school at LCC I was just 18, and I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up but it was the thing to do. At the time I wanted to go into Auto Mechanics because I could use my hands better than my brain and told myself that is all I would ever be able to do. I eventually dropped out because of a knee injury, and an awesome paying job. Then, like it often does, life hap-pened, I got married, had kids, things were hard, and it went from hard to unbearable. After I picked up the pieces from my divorce I knew I had to do something with my life. After a lot of prayer and trusting this is the path I was supposed to take, I came back to LCC. Not only did I come back, I brought purpose with me. After two short years I am looking at graduation and transferring to a 4 year university! I will be getting at least a minimum of my masters in Communication Disorder, but working toward aPhD.
2. When I came back to LCC. I thought I was going to do amazing! Wrong! After my first semester of struggles I sought out TRiO. I remembered being in TRiO during my first time at school, but never uti-lizing them. I walked in and who do I see, Vernicka Tyson. She had left and returned. I knew I was where I was supposed to be when I saw her. Vernicka helped me make a MAP for my time at LCC. The tutors are amazing people who want to see you succeed. All of TRiO had been so helpful, and sup-portive I couldn’t picture being at LCC without them.
3. The tutors are free! USE THEM! If you have questions, ask! Stay connected with your advisor to make sure you stay on track. Don’t make excuses! Get your school work done. You chose to be here, make the time you need to succeed.

The Interview
Duane Detrich is tutor in the Learning Commons and TRiO. Duane loves to work with stu-
dents and, most importantly he says that he learns a lot of new things from the students.
He states that he always tries to make the connection that every class you take applies to
your career. He has been tutoring at LCC for five years. Duane has been involved with TRiO
since the mid 90’s. He says, ”I am committed to the philosophy of what TRiO does and how
it serves the students.” His passion for helping students has been inspired by the impact of
what TRiO has on students success.
Duane says, “Education is a key that can unlock many doors. It isn’t just what you learn in
the classrooms, which is only a small part of education.” Is important that we realize that
education is not what starts at classrooms and ends there. When we step out of the class-
room, what we learn goes far beyond the “book
learning”. We learn lessons in every aspect of
life. Duane ends with saying, “We center how to
communicate across cultural groups, we learn to
embrace and celebrate our diversity, and we
learn to overcome challenges.
We truly appreciate such a great tutor with
strong passion to help others be among us.

Cultural Events
Cultural events are great opportunities for TRiO students to
take advantage of, observe, and reflect upon. Cultural
events help students to have a better understanding of
what they want to do in the future with a closer look.
Popular EVENTS:
-University Visits: give students opportunities to ask questions,
look around campus, hear current student stories, financial
workshops, and more!
-Business Etiquette Dinner: cost $20, but if you are a TRiO student
it is free! The event allows students to learn the core principles
when attending a business dinner . Colleges have their own
booths for answering questions about majors, housing, jobs, etc.
