-- by Jennifer Steger, Josh Howie, and Erin Boit

Community Living, Trillium Works!, and Family Services have all held Stakeholder PATH celebrations in the past few months. Consumers that Trillium supports, members of the management team, staff, parents, guardians, and case managers were on hand to celebrate the achievements outlined in their perspective PATHs. Community Living celebrated their PATH on May 11th with a room full of stakeholders sharing stories and celebrations. Family Services had their six-month celebration on April 27th and had many accomplishments to share with the group. Trillium Works! held a Stakeholders PATH Celebration on February, 17th 2011, which marked one year since the PATH had been completed. Trillium Works!, continues to make great strides towards completing everything that was detailed on their PATH. Picnic! The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation

Facilities (CARF) is a non-profit international accrediting agency we hired to evaluate our services. The survey began on May 23rd and included: visiting each of our residential homes, interviewing a variety of our stakeholders, reviewing agency practices and other activities that demonstrated our agency’s conformance to the CARF standards. Although we are waiting for the final accreditation decision from CARF, we were proud to receive feedback indicating our conformance to their standards as well as identified strengths of the agency. CARF has always been a vehicle for our agency to ensure person centered innovative practices, accountability and improvement. We appreciate everyone who participated in the CARF survey process; we thank you for your time!

Karaoke Time!Barbara Carlson is a busy lady and one of her favorite

activities occurs the third Friday of every month. After having dinner with her boyfriend, Barb heads down to the VFW for an evening of karaoke. She frequently practices a number of her favorite 50s and 60s hits while riding in the car. She is almost always willing to belt out a couple tunes while preparing dinner or making her lunch for the next day.

Barb says her favorites are tunes by the Beach Boys, Herman’s Hermits, the Monkees and, of course, Elvis Presley. While Barb usually steals the show with her solo numbers, she has been known to do a duet or two.

If you ever get a chance to stop by the VFW on the third Friday of the month, you’ll be treated to some great entertainment. Sorry, Barb doesn’t have a CD out at this time. . . but the year isn’t over yet.

“Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys, of course!” -Barb Carlson, when asked what her favorite song to perform is.

The Trillium Task Force had a very active few months. In March, Christine Rogers shared her knowledge of American Sign Language with the group. The presentation included learning the ASL alphabet and various signs for food (to coordinate with the potluck). During the presentation, there were many opportunities to practice the signs. In April, members of the Trillium Task Force designed

Easter decorations for Viewcrest. The residents of Viewcrest were delighted to see the creative and lively springtime art. May was a busy month for TTF! To help the environment

and the community, trash was collected along Brighton Beach. It was a cold day in May, but everyone worked hard to rid the park of litter and garbage. Also in May, we welcomed Mohamed Jalloh, who gave a presentation on his native culture in West Africa. He shared great stories and brought in many pictures, currency, and other objects. If you have a talent, skill or topic of interest that you would like to present to members of Trillium Task Force, please contact Vicky Galarowicz, Jen Hurst, Erin Boit or Tanya Karsiko. – by Jennifer Hurst and Vicky Galarowicz

Trillium Works! in action -- by Sharon Noland

Megan Helmer and Kate Wallin have created a Mentorship Program

within Hermantown Schools this school year. Once a week they go in to talk to and work with kids on closing the gap between people with disabilities and people without disabilities; inclusion for all. They use playing cards from the Ungame to generate discussion topics. (Sometimes the discussions get pretty wild!) This year they also worked with some students in Special Education that will be transitioning to the high school for the upcoming school year. Megan and Kate use their experiences in life and school to relate to the kids and hope to help ease some of their fears and doubts. Next year the ladies plan to incorporate Carlton Schools into their Mentorship Program. They also would like to work with younger kids, hoping to talk about the topic of bullying with them. Their hope is that starting at an earlier age may help prevent bullying and teasing in the future. The kids Megan and Kate have worked with this year really appreciated the ladies coming in every week. They got many “thank yous” on their last day and also were asked to stop in and “say hi” to the students transitioning to the high school next year.

The health beat-- by Cindy Sanders

Dehydration-Dehydration is a condition that occurs

when your body loses fluids that exceed the amount that are taken in. We lose water every day in the form of water vapor as we exhale water in our sweat, urine, and stool. When we lose too much water, our bodies may become out of balance or dehydrated.

Common causes of dehydration are: fever, heat exposure, vomiting and diarrhea.

The signs and symptoms of dehydration vary in degree. They include increased thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, confusion, sluggishness, inability to sweat and decreased urine output or concentrated urine (deep dark amber in color).

If you become dehydrated try to take fluids in the following ways: Sip small amounts of water, drink electrolyte-containing drinks. (ex: Pedialyte or sports drinks), suck on ice chips or popsicles made from juices, or sip through a straw.

If you have any of the following symptoms, make sure you call your physician: increased or constant vomiting for more than a day, fever over 101°F, diarrhea for more than 2 days, weight loss, decreased urine production, confusion or weakness.

You have heard that prevention is the best policy. Well, this is very true in this situation. To prevent dehydration from happening take extra water to all

activities, avoid exercise and exposure during hot and humid days, avoid alcohol consumption, (alcohol increases water loss), and wear light-colored loose-fitting clothing if you are outdoors.

Recently, Carrie Ferguson and Tracy Olson went to Do North Pizzeria in Hermantown for dinner. When they arrived, they were greeted by very friendly staff, especially their waitress, who was nice and helpful. Tracy ordered a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese. Tracy said “It was so good that I ate five slices and brought the rest home to eat later! I also had a Pepsi which was very good.” Carrie recalled her experience saying, “I had a very tasty chicken alfredo pizza and orange pop for dinner. It was the best restaurant experience I have ever had!” Both girls are looking forward to visiting Do North again and would recommend it to everyone!

Big Mamma’s: Like Father Like Son – Big mamma is back! This time he has back up, his teenage step son Trent. FBI agent, Malcom Turner, and Trent go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murderer posing as Big Mamma. -- BRango – Johnny Depp is the lead voice in this movie about a lizard named Rango that finds himself in a new town called dirt. He is there trying to uncover the mystery of the town’s drought. He fights off a hawk and an evil rattle snake to protect the town’s people; in the end he finds the source of water to save the people of dirt. I really liked the movie. I thought it was really cute and I enjoy Rango saving the town. -- AAfrican Cat – African Cats showed the lives of cheetahs and lions in Kenya, Africa. My favorite animal was Sita, a mother cheetah, who was raising three cubs to be independent. I really like when the cubs were learning to fight to defend themselves. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone that loves cats. -- A+

Sucker Punch – A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility. Emily Browning acted and sang very cool! -- A-Red Riding Hood – Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure. -- BUnknown – A man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one, not even his wife, believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. Great suspense film with a twist! -- A+

CPR for the Health Care Professional Coming in August-In listening to the training buzz around Trillium we have heard

several employees express an interest in being able to utilize our training curriculum to further their education with a CPR training for the Health Care Professional. In response to this interest we have developed just that, a CPR Training for the Health Care Professional that satisfies the requirements of higher education and Health Care Professions. Currently students are required to pay for this training through The American Red Cross or St. Luke’s Hospital. Nursing students, Occupational Therapists, Medical students, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, X-ray Technicians and the like will be able to receive Continuing Education Units and become certified in CPR free of charge if they are a Trillium Employee. The training will also be offered to the greater community for a nominal cost in the future. The training will be making its debut training August 11, 2011.

Our facilitators have received more extensive education to facilitate this training and the material is more specialized to meet the education requirements for individuals in the health care field. This is a stand-alone CPR training that is not coupled with our first aid training. Those employees interested in taking this training will also need to go through our first aid training to satisfy Trillium’s licensing requirements. We are limited to how many people we can train so get signed up soon as possible if you are interested in attending this training.

My Trillium Story, featuring Collin Maurer and Jenna Gilbert.

Congratulations!Congratulations to the following graduates:

Ivy Winter graduated from St. Scholastica with a BA in Social Sciences with an emphasis on Psychology.Vicky Galarowicz graduated with honors from the College of St. Scholastica with a degree in Organizational Behavior.Becky Pittner graduated from the University of Phoenix with a masters in Health Administration.Brook Wilkerling graduated from UWS with a concentration in Wellness and Fitness Management with a minor in Health.Laura Melde graduated from UMD with a degree in Physical Education.Porsche Peak graduated from St. Scholastica with a degree in Social Science.

Jenna & Collin

Jenna Gilbert has filled many roles during her time at Trillium Services and has developed many

relationships along the way. One of those special relationships was made with Collin Maurer during the time she has been working at Lavaque.

Collin has had a number of roles in Trillium as well. Initially Collin received support in his

family home and later moved to Jackson Estates. Once the Lavaque home was built and open, he became part of the fun that happens there on a daily basis. Collin made it clear early on that Jenna is a special person in his life.

As time went on, Jenna noticed that Collin created a number of attractive art pieces. The two worked

to display Collin’s art in his bedroom and in his home. They picked out some eye catching pieces and framed them for anyone who visits the home to appreciate. When Jenna comes in to work, Collin is eager to greet her and the two spend some time catching up on what has gone on since they last saw each other. Together they have built a relationship that doesn’t need a lot of words to be understood.
