From our Vicar Last year was a year of celebration for us at St Thomas’s.

We celebrated our 80th birthday, and this year, moving

the decimal point one place to the right, another

anniversary is celebrated.

In 1215 King John sealed the Magna Carta ‘for the honour

of God and the exaltation of Holy Church and the reform

of the realm’ at Runnymede. This most famous of all

documents set in motion some of the key tenants of the English people.

Perhaps the most famous clause within it is the right to be tried in front of

one’s peers. This clause alone serves as a constant reminder of Magna

Carta’s place in our lives as successive governments seek to find all kinds of

pretexts to short-cut this cumbersome entry.

Perhaps less well known is the very first clause of Magna Carta which says,

‘We have granted to God, and by this our present Charter have confirmed,

for Us and our Heirs for ever, that the Church of England shall be free, and

shall have all her whole Rights and Liberties inviolable.’

This clause, reaffirming the moral autonomy of the Church in England, can

be, and has been, seen as a licence to revolt. However, far more positively it

is seen as a re-statement that at the start of all things there is God and His

Church.

The Church of England by its unique nature and position in the civic life

offers something quite profound. The Church of England is not some

strange fringe movement, but rather something whose voice is there to be

heard. Its independence from civic influence ensures that it also has a

prophetic role in the life of the nation which should, and does, elevate it

beyond the Tory Party at prayer.

As we begin a new year at St Thomas’s we do so conscious of the past and

our rich heritage which includes everything from the prayers of the faithful

within our walls to the political machinations of the clergy and nobility

gathered at Runnymede.

We should celebrate that God has given us a unique chance to share the

good news not as outsiders but as friends.

May we throughout 2015 be that prophetic and loving voice that Magna

Carta intended and our Lord ordained. Pray for our politicians, for those

charged with administering justice in this year of the General Election, so

that the past is not simply the home of the nostalgic, but the citadel of the

just.

Your friend and priest

Fr. Robert

Parish News The Parish News is once again dominated at this time of year

by a sense of joy, ‘Oh yes it is!’ This year’s Panto was bigger

and better than last year and that is due to the huge efforts of

the actors and behind-the-scenes volunteers.

The after-show party had the St Thomas’s equivalent of the Oscars and

what was particularly pleasing was the number of times the phrase, ‘in his/

her first Panto’ was used. This show saw lots of ‘first-timers’ and the feeling

of esprit de corps grew and grew over the period.

We were blest with sell-outs for all four performances, and I fear ticket

touts may be a feature in 2016! Of course those who don the grease-paint

and costumes deserve great thanks, but it wouldn’t have been possible

without an amazing production and directorial team.

Talking to the parents of our young people what is apparent is that this was

more than a show for them, it was a formative experience which gave them

a glimpse of the very best that church can be. The wonderful mixture of age

and experience, some faith and none, meant that St Thomas’s lived the

gospel. Every Sunday at the 8am Book of Common Prayer Eucharist I say,

‘Let your light so shine before all men that they may see your good works

and glorify your Father which is in heaven’. In a strange and wonderful way

Aladdin seems to have done just that.

The other key news item is that on 1st February we will be having a

Confirmation Eucharist with the Bishop of Willesden at 10am. Please come

along and bring family and friends to support our candidates. Please pray for:

Gordon, Janet, Matthew, Sam, Caragh, Rose, Martha, Celia and Elice as they

prepare to receive this wonderful sacrament and their first holy

communion. As you pray for them please also think about how you can

serve the Church here in Hanwell.

In other news our 50+ group meets for a bring and share lunch on 4th

February at 12.30pm in the Church Hall. We are aiming to plan events for

the year so please come along with ideas.

A reminder that Ash Wednesday is on 18th February. The season begins

with a Mass including the imposition of ashes at 7.30pm. Please do come

along, and give last year’s palm crosses to Fr. Robert before that date.

Lent will, of course, have the usual devotions, so please keep an eye out and

support them for the good of all the Church, and your interior life.

Have a very blessed 2015 and holy Lent.

First Woman Bishop

arrives in the Church of England The Rt Revd Libby Lane became the first woman to be consecrated as a

bishop in the Church of England on Monday, January 26. At a York Minster

service presided over by the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of

York, Libby became the 8th Bishop of Stockport, a suffragan (assistant) bish-

op in the Diocese of Chester.

Speaking at Stockport Town Hall, when her appointment was first an-

nounced on 17 December 2014, Libby said: "I am grateful for, though some-

what daunted by, the confidence placed in me by the Diocese of Chester.

This is unexpected and very exciting. I am very conscious of all those who

have gone before me, women and men, who for decades have looked for-

ward to this moment. But most of all I am thankful to God.

"The Church of England is called to serve all the people of this country and,

being present in every community, we communicate our faith best when our

lives build up the lives of others, especially the most vulnerable. I am excited

by the possibilities and challenges ahead."

Libby Lane was ordained priest in 1994 and served a number of roles in the

North of England. She served her curacy in Blackburn Diocese and, in York

Diocese, served as a hospital chaplain and as a chaplain in further education.

Moving to the Diocese of Chester, Libby served as a team vicar in Stockport

before becoming Vicar of St Peter's Hale and St Elizabeth's Ashley, in 2007.

In 2013, Libby was elected by the North-West dioceses as one of the first

eight clergy women to sit as Participant Observers in the House of Bishops

of the Church of England. She also served as Family Life Officer in York and

as Chester’s Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands, advising and sup-

porting people thinking about ministry in the Church of England. January

2010 saw her take on the role of Dean of Women in Ministry in Chester

Diocese.

When the new Bishop of Stockport was announced, the Archbishop of

York predicted that Libby would “exercise her episcopal ministry with joy,

prayerfulness, and trust in God.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, said: "Her

Christ-centred life, calmness and clear determination to serve the church

and the community make her a wonderful choice."

The Bishop of Chester, the Rt. Revd Dr Peter Forster, who led the nomina-

tion process, confirmed: "As the first woman bishop in the Church of Eng-

land she will face many challenges as well as enjoying many opportunities to

be an ambassador for Jesus Christ. I have no doubt that she has the gifts and

determination to be an outstanding bishop.”

Bishop Libby succeeded the Rt. Revd Robert Atwell, now the Bishop of Exe-

ter. Her husband, George, with whom she was ordained in 1994, is Coordi-

nating Chaplain at Manchester Airport. They have two grown up children.

Between episcopal duties, she hopes to continue learning the saxophone,

supporting Manchester United and doing cryptic crosswords.

Prayer for the month of February O Lord Jesus Christ, you taught your disciples to

pray, to do good deeds and to fast cheerfully,

without hypocrisy or ostentation; help us as we

begin this season of Lent to use it sincerely for your

service, and discipline ourselves cheerfully for your sake; for

you died for us but now you live, for ever and ever, world

without end.

Winter the Huntsman

Through his iron glades

Rides Winter the Huntsman.

All colour fades

As his horn is heard sighing.

Far through the forest

His wild hooves crash and thunder

Till many a mighty branch

Is torn asunder.

And the red reynard creeps

To his hole near the river,

The copper leaves fall

And the bare trees shiver.

As night creeps from the ground

Hides each tree from its brother,

And each dying sound

Reveals yet another.

Is it Winter the Huntsman

Who gallops through his iron glades,

Cracking his cruel whip

To the gathering shades?

Osbert Sitwell

Saluting Free Trade This month (Feb) we can celebrate two decades of the Fairtrade movement,

founded back in 1995. Recent research showed that 78 per cent of the UK

public now recognise the Fairtrade Mark, which stands for the world’s larg-

est and most recognised fair-trade system. Its aim is to secure a better deal

for farmers and workers.

Based in Bonn, Germany, it sets international standards, organises support

for producers around the world and promotes trade justice internationally.

The work of building a market for fair-trade products is carried out by na-

tional Fairtrade organisations across the world. There are such organisa-

tions not only in Europe but also in India, South Korea, Hong Kong and

Kenya.

An independent company runs the Fairtrade certification system, ensuring

that the relevant social and environmental standards are met for new raw

materials and products. Here in the UK, the Fairtrade Foundation is an inde-

pendent organisation that provides independent certification that licenses

use of the Fairtrade Mark on products in the UK.

The Foundation was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam,

Traidcraft and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (to name just

a few).

ST THOMAS’S ORGAN FUND: COLLECTABLES PROJECT There is an old saying that goes “One man’s trash is another man’s treas-

ure”. This was the thought behind the Organ Fund Collectables pro-

ject. “Trash”? Well, not quite, more like unwanted household items with

collectable or antique qualities. The idea of collecting and selling on these

items is a winner on several levels. It gives you good people the opportuni-

ty to clear out unwanted items from your homes and know they are going

to support a great cause. In doing so, you are directly helping towards the

restoration of St Thomas’s historic organ, it is costing you nothing AND

you are getting rid of clutter and freeing up space!

So far the Collectables drive has raised well over £1500 towards the organ

fund, all due to the generosity of the donors. We have been given all kinds

of antiques, china, ornaments, curios, toys and “collectables”. Special men-

tion has to go to a full set of Maundy coins and a wonderful doll from

1895. Both were sold via auction and did very well. Although not exactly

what we were looking for, we have also been given (and sold!) an electric

golfer’s trolley, a variety of small electrical goods and even a small rocking

horse. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has donated!

Items that cannot be sold in auction or have not sold at antiques fairs are

put on the stall at the St Thomas’s Spring Fair and Christmas Fair. The stall

proves very popular. This Christmas we had a truly enjoyable afternoon

selling a wide variety of items all donated by you towards the fund. Nearly

£200 was raised on that day alone.

Now for a plea. We are in desperate need of new stock. Anyone who is

having a New Year clear out or is about to have a Spring Clean, please think

of the Collectables project. Everyone has a cupboard or bottom draw con-

taining items that are not really wanted but are kept because they may be of

use some day, well now is that day! What have you hidden away in the at-

tic?

If you have items that you would like to donate please call me on 07952

011543 in the evenings or e-mail me at [email protected] to arrange

local collection. Thank you.

See you at the Spring Fair! Dave Clarke
