Abstract

This project is a translation of eye witnesses' testimonies on massacres committed during the last aggressive war launched on Gaza Strip on 27th Dec 2008 and led to over 1400 martyrs and 5500 injured people on the human level. The material was collected from some interviews with people who witnessed those massacres and it was documented at Oral History Center at Islamic University - Gaza.

As a political-informational translation for real serious situations and events, the method applied for translating this project is represented in drawing the whole image of every single tragic event conveying the hard feelings, pains, and horribleness resulting from the massacres carried out by the Israeli occupation. As a Palestinian, the translator was loyal to the Palestinian case morals in translating. Persistently, she tried, as much as she could, to disclose the Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian civilians and to point out the amounts of the entire destruction and demolition.

Technically, the translator compiled the different techniques that accommodate with the register of this text e.g. adding, deleting, shifting, paraphrasing, and, many others were employed as possible to build up a consistent text.

As a Palestinian, the translator found herself absent from many details mentioned in the source text that she never knew about before reading this material, so it's imaginable the case with non-Palestinians. Thus, the project is not limited to academic goals but it goes beyond to convey the truth no matter how painful it is.

Gaza! The town of death and life, sadness and happiness, pain and pleasure, sank in a bloody twenty-three days where the life was stolen from. On 27th Dec 2008, the Israeli military occupation forces launched a cruel overall attack against the unarmed people

of Gaza Strip, where the sky went gray and land became red committing ceaselessly a massacre after another. Like some, I was empty-handed but to pray for an end. When it was gone, I knew that it's the time to play a role in that war by revealing the truth and transferring the real 3D picture to the whole world adding to it the fourth dimension of blood smell, so that world can see through it.

Background: As one of the extremely Israeli aggressive serials, Israel launched ruthlessly a war against Gaza Strip on 27th Dec. 2008. It continued for 23 days where nothing got untouched; killing people, shelling houses and official departments, destroying roads and schools, sweeping lands, bombing ambulances, and imposing poverty where no food, water, medicine, electricity, or safe place. The most atrocious was when a man, a woman, or a child witnessed the crime of killing his family in front of them in a brutal way.

According to the report of United Nations: Rights expert calls for expert inquiry into Gaza war crimes - By Kanaga Raja, some results of the war are as follow:

“-- A total of 1,434 Palestinians were killed. Of these, 235 were combatants. 960 civilians reportedly lost their lives, including 288 children and 121 women. 239 police officers were also killed; the majority (235) in air strikes carried out on the first day. 5,303 Palestinians were injured, including 1,606 children and 828 women (namely 1 in every 225 Gazans was killed or injured, not counting mental injury, which must be assumed to be extensive);

-- Homes and public infrastructure throughout Gaza, especially in Gaza City, sustained extensive damage, including several United Nations facilities; an estimated 21,000 homes were either totally destroyed or badly damaged; and

-- A total of 51,000 people were internally displaced in makeshift shelters that provided minimal protection, while others fled to homes of friends and relatives that seemed slightly safer”.

Goals: In this respect, the goals of project are classified into three groups:

First: Patriotic goals, 1- Contributing to defending the Palestinian country and rights against the

occupation forces as an obligatory duty. 2- Spilling the beans about the occupation non-stop crimes against the unarmed

Palestinian people. 3- Transferring the painful message of Gaza Strip people who have suffered the

woes of not only the war, but also the siege imposed over them for so long. 4- Facing the fake Israeli media which always reverses the image for its own

interest. 5- Publishing the project on Islamic University website.

Second: academic goals,

1- Completing a diploma graduating project to fulfill the requirements of graduation.

2- Measuring the translator's level of progress in translation achieved at the end of the professional translation diploma.

3- Seeking excellence to be a meritorious contestant in this field of study.

Third: professional goals,

1- Working as a translator for any reliable institution or being freelance. 2- Enhancing the translator's experience in any position.

Type of project: It's a translation of eyewitnesses on the Israeli crimes committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip during the last war. It's like a political-informational translation for real serious situations and events.

Adopted method: The method applied for translating this project is represented in drawing the whole image of every single tragic event conveying the hard feelings, pains, and horribleness resulting from the massacres carried out by the Israeli occupation. As a Palestinian, the translator was loyal to the Palestinian case morals in translating. Persistently, she tried, as much as she could, to disclose the Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian civilians and to point out the amounts of destruction and demolition caused.

Obstacles:

1- Psychological: it's a hard work for the translator as she lived the experience of war and suffered from its psychological consequences. Translating the project is like a returning to live the war again but with more cruelty as she stopped at every story of death.

2- Occupational: the total engagement to the work prevented the translator from translating the project quickly.

A last word: Palestinian translators could play a role as great as soldiers towards the Palestinian issue by translating the Israeli murders and crimes into the world's different languages to show them the reality of the Zionist entity. The translator does believe that it's the weakest of faith.

The area conditions during the air strikes and land shelling

Q. How was the condition in your area before the Israeli overland military invasion?

It was too serious; heavy random shelling of outspread areas. Once I woke up that morning, my younger brother told me “Your brother, Salem, was martyred”. I went with my father to the venue, and we took my brother’s body, then we buried him in Al Salatin area. ICRC staff asked us to leave the place, so we went to the Bedouins’ area. We were about 50 people. Once we arrived, we knew that my cousin was martyred too in front of her house while she was making tea. Another person from Abu Hasheesh family was martyred as well. The tanks and military vehicles were located in front of our house. At 16:00, my uncle received a call from my brother Mahmoud telling him that his son was martyred, and Mahmoud was injured by fragmentation bombs. Consequently, we went there and buried the martyr, then we took Mahmoud to the hospital but later he was transferred to Egypt because of his serious injury.

Returning with a Deep Heartbreak

Q. Describe the scene after returning?

I saw three female martyrs. Om Talal was divided into two parts. We covered her and took her by the ambulance. Om Khalil’s body was torn and swept away with the house by an Israeli bulldozer. I went back home, I found it completely destroyed; spotted clothes with blood, and broken doors, windows, and beds.

Q. Did the Israeli forces arrest anybody in your area?

Yes. They arrested a woman who belongs to Hassouna family with her son and her neighbor. They put her in isolated place with a bottle of water only throughout the war.

The beginning of the war against Gaza

Q. How was the beginning of the war against Gaza?

On 27/12/2008, the warplanes shelled the governmental Saraya where a training course was being conducted. My brothers including my brother Samih Al Na’oq were working there, but that day he did not go to the work as he came to my house in order to congratulate my two sons for their marriage. They got married three days before.

I was saddened by the big number of martyrs on that day. The air strikes continued for many days. Then, the Israeli army started the ground invasion starting with Jabalia. They shelled houses including ours with two rockets targeting Samih’s place. We thought it as a warning for us, so all of us got out the house to a nearby one.

Moreover, my uncle’s house in Jabalia was threatened to be shelled by the Israeli warplanes. Therefore, we went to see them, but my niece was hysterically terrified. So we took her to her grandparents’ house. My father asked me how bad the situation was. I told him that the whole world is against us, but he replied that victory comes only from Allah.

On that day, my father was sitting with Samih, Abd Allatif, Mohammad Al Zamlia, Fadi Abdullah, and Rajab O’lwan. I saw my mother waiting for a car to go to my uncle’s house. Both my two sons waited with her till the car arrived. I was about to get in the car when suddenly we heard a huge bomb blast. I felt like I was shattered into two halves and died due to the severity of injury.

At 11:00 am, an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft shelled the place where my father and brothers were sitting. I was taken to the hospital. I was extremely astonished and my brain stopped thinking. Later, I knew that six of them were martyred at once; my father, my brother Samih, Abd Allatif, Mohammad Abdullah, but Fadi had remained injured till he was martyred after being transferred to Egypt hospitals.

The martyrs' area

Q. What do you know about the martyr “Mohammad Atef Abu Hasna”?

He was my cousin. He lived in Jabalia town, Gaza old St. He was martyred by a fragment that struck him in chest when the Israeli soldiers shelled Al Rayes Mountain. He was mainly responsible for his family since he was 11 – 12 years old because of his father’s illness.

Q. What do you know about the martyr “Mohammad Fareed Abdullah”?

He was my cousin. He and his group ambushed at a house in the estate of Abd Rabouh. They could explode an Israeli tank when the Israeli ground forces invaded the area. They also killed a dog and an Israeli soldier besides kidnapping his corpse. They clashed with the Israeli army for many hours, so the army sent one of the area inhabitants to negotiate with them for surrendering but they refused and had a remarkable battle there. Consequently, the Israeli occupation forces shelled the house where they were by reconnaissance aircraft missile, and they all died.

Q. What do you know about the heroic incidents in your area?

1- Eyad Al Banna and Fayez Abu Warda were martyred during a fire clash with an Israeli special force. They fought bravely till they were shelled as they refused to surrender.

2- Ibrahim Olwan was a heroic legend. He completely refused to surrender and resisted till he was martyred. 

3- Jebril Abu Hasna was a well known hero. He was martyred with his Egyptian companion Ramzy Okasha in outpost in the east area. They heroically stood fast till the last minute especially when they succeeded to catch an Israeli soldier's corpse. The body contained a GPS tracking equipment, so the Israeli forces could locate their position and shell them.

هذا الشهيد هو ابن خالي ، يسكن شارع غزة القديم في جباليا البلد، والحدث الذي نتج عنه استشهاده هو يوم ض جبل الريس للقصف ، ضربته شظية من صاروخ في صدره ، وهو االبن الذي يعتبره والده عمود أن تعر

.سنة 12-11البيت ، ألن والده آان مريضا ال يقدر على تلبية حاجات األسرة ويبلغ من العمر

ماذا تعرف عن الشهيد محمد فريد العبد اهللا ؟. س

ئه في منطقة عزبة عبد ربه عندما دخلت القوات البرية على هذا الشهيد ابن خالتي تحصن لليهود مع زمالالمنطقة، نجحوا في تفجير دبابة، وقتلوا جندي صهيوني وخطفوه وقتلوا آلبهم، واشتبكوا مع الجيش لعدة ساعات وجاء الجيش بأحد سكان المنطقة ليفاوضوهم على أن يسلموا أنفسهم ، لكنهم أبو االستسالم لليهود

Beginning of the aggression

Q. How was it when the war began?

The air strikes continued for about ten days. It was heavy and indiscriminate and targeted centers, houses, lands, and everything at all. The overland invasion was preceded by heavy shelling in order to cover the sound of tanks. Our house was one of those which were shelled, so we decided to leave it. The Special Forces were in front of the house, thus we could not move. When the shelling continued increasingly, we persisted to get out, but the Israeli forces prevented us saying “Stay home. We asked you to leave your homes before but you insisted to steadfast. So, Steadfast! ” Next day, another Israeli group came and told us to get out. They made us to stand beside the wall. I was sure that they were going to kill or arrest me, so I saw off my mother telling her that I could never be back. They took me and put me aside. My mother yelled but in vain. Then, they notified the people to leave the area within fifteen minutes.

Arrested and tortured

Q. What happened after the Israeli forces had arrested you?

In the beginning, they asked me about my job. I said I don't have any. The officer asked me if I belonged to any faction, but I replied that I did not either. He slapped me on the face and said “we know that you belong to Islamic Jihad”. I repeated my answer I did not. Later about 02:00 am, they released everyone who was younger than 17. We were about 70. When it was my turn to leave, the officer insulted me calling me “Dog! Go back to Jabalia”. When I arrived to my uncle’s house, I passed out and was transferred to Al-Shifa Hospital.

Martyrdom and Devastation

Q. How was Shawqi Al Atar martyred?

He saw our house burning while he was looking through the window. In the same time he did not know about the existence of occupation forces in the area, so he yelled saying “Abu Taha! Your house! Your house!”. Then the Israeli forces shot and killed him. His body remained three days on the ground. His wife was so upset and talked angrily to an Israeli soldier, but he answered her that he had killed her husband because he was yelling. Tragically, the family departed the house leaving the body in as they could not take it.

Q. How were Om Talal and Om Khalil martyred?

Om Khalil persisted to return back home after leaving it with her children in order to take the money and golden jewels they had left. When she found no Israeli soldiers, she stayed at home. Later, the occupation forces killed her and destroyed the house upon her.

Om Talal disappeared after she had left with some people. Afterwards, she was found shattered into halves by a bomb.

Q. Describe the houses devastation you saw.

We found the soldiers’ garbage everywhere inside the houses. They were telling the detainees that they had got into and destroyed their homes.

Q. Who were killed in the tunnels?

Three members belonging to Sobuh family were resisting the occupation forces and bombing tanks. They stayed in the tunnel six days planning to explode a tank, but the reconnaissance plane could observe them. It shelled the tunnel with a gas bomb, and they died. Fifteen days later, their bodies were taken out of the tunnel.

The condition at war beginning

Q. How was it when the war began?

Shelling, killing, destroying, sweeping, assassinating, demolishing to police stations, large number of martyrs, and fearing of explosions and bombs sound. Many places were bombed and totally destroyed such as; 17 Forces Headquarter, Al Mashtel, military locations in Jabalia Camp, and Al Jawazat Police Headquarter in Gaza. There were lots of martyrs like Islam Al Sammar, Sha’lan Abdalsalm, and others.

Massacres and victims

Q. Talk about the massacre which caused to falling nine victims.

On Dec, 29th 2009, the Israeli forces shelled a house beside the smithery of Samour family. Firstly it was thought that the smithery was targeted, so some members of the family went there to check out the place. When arriving, they tried to take some tools out of it. At 04:20 pm while many young men were gathering around the smithery, a reconnaissance plane shelled the smithery directly with few missiles so many of different families were killed at once; Samour, Abu Al Khair, Al Dabagh, Ghabayen, and Al Rakhaway. There was a huge explosion especially with the presence of oxygen cylinders and gasoline. Moreover, ambulances couldn’t reach the area which was declared a military zone. Martyrs’ bodies were badly charred, unidentifiable and transferred to the hospital by civil cars.

Q. How did you know about your brother’s martyrdom?

At 04:30 pm we knew that Imad Samour was martyred, so my brother asked me to call our brother Ashraf so as to reassure on him, but we couldn't. We went to Kamal Odwan hospital to see him but there we knew that he was in Al-Shifa hospital. After Isha'a prayer, the night-time daily prayer recited by practising Muslims, we got informed that he died. Ashraf, 28 years old, was married for two months only. He always asked his wife to remarry if he was martyred.

Q. How was the martyrs' funeral?

The funeral started from Kamal Odwan hospital to the houses of martyrs' families. We prayed for them at Beir Al Sabe'a mosque. Huge numbers of all factions participated in the funeral ceremony. May Allah have mercy upon the martyrs and replace them His paradise.

Massacres and victims

Q. You are one of the witnesses on a massacre that caused nine victims. Please explain.

I was working with Yasser Ghabayen when his cousin called telling him that Samour's smithery was bombed. We quickened to the place and found that it was a house beside the smithery which had been bombed. There were a lot of young men who decided to take some tools out of the smithery. While that, the warplanes shelled the smithery and the van. Consequently, many were martyred.

Q. Describe the martyrs' state.

It was seriously bad. The presence of oxygen cylinders led to charring the martyrs' bodies. They stayed a half hour on the ground until the ambulances came and took them to the hospital. My nephew was one of them.

Q. Tell us about your martyred nephew.

His name is Mohammad Ka'ber, 17 years old. He was kind-hearted and loved to defend his country against the Israeli occupation since he was a child, in-so-much he bought a knife.

Q. Precisely, how many martyrs are from your area?

They are ten; nine of them were martyred at once; the last one, the owner of the house targeted beside the smithery, belongs to Hamdan family and was found martyred on the third day of offering condolences.

Q. where were they buried?

We prayed for them at Beir Al Sabe'a mosque then we buried them in Al Saftawy graveyard.

The conditions in Gaza before the war

Q. How were your conditions before the aggressive war against Gaza?

We are the sons of Mohammad Mohammad Al Na'ouq "Abu Nabil". We are eleven. My father worked in the education field for forty years. He was eager to educate and teach us, so you find the engineer, teacher, and accountant among us. We were brought up with the value of loving Allah, his messenger, and our country.

As a result of oppression practiced on the Palestinians people, all of us participated in the first Intifada of 1987 and we got detained in the Israeli occupation prisons. Also in Al Aqsa Intifada, our condition was the same as the Palestinian people's, so we partook to defend our homeland.

On Nov. 4th 2006, my brothers Isaa and Ali left home to defend some of resistants who were surrounded inside Al Nasser mosque in Jabalia. They clashed with the occupation forces in the battle of Arbitral Ambush till they were martyred. The aggressive Israeli forces admitted that some soldiers were injured. The Israeli army revenged not only by shelling and completely destroying our house in that area, but also by re-shelling the house again in the last holocaust of Jabalia after we had rebuilt it.

With this respect, we call upon the so-called Israel that whatever crimes they do, they will not uproot our will and principles we have absorbed since childhood. They will not be safe in Palestine.

Shelling the house

Q. Please tell us about your experience during the last war against Gaza.

We left work and went west immediately after we had heard the explosions sound. The smoke was rising from the government, security, and police stations which were targeted by the enemy warplanes. My father had minor injuries and left the hospital quickly.

The operations of air strikes continued. On Jan. 4th 2009, the fourth and fifth floors of our house were shelled by the Israeli missiles. Wherefore, we had to evacuate the house but my father persisted to stay till we could convince him to go to a close place.

Our residence was two buildings dwelling a thousand members of our family and my uncle's. We were going there every day to serve my father as he was an ill person.

Q. which places were targeted in the area during the air strikes operation?

No place was out of shelling reach; Abu Saed Hammad's house was completely destroyed, Abu Ahmed Abd Rabouh's house was bombed and his three children were martyred while sleeping, an empty piece of land beside our house where children play was also targeted, an empty garden of the building and a store for manufacturing cars and doors locks were shelled, too.

Q. How were your brother and father martyred?

On Jan. 15th 2009 sunny morning, my brother Samih and I gave our father breakfast, and we sat talking to him. Then, he asked us to sit beside his friend Abu Ahmed near the house.

There were my father, Samih, Mohammad Al Zamlia, and my cousin Abd Allatif who my father took care of because he was an orphan. About 11:00 pm, we heard an explosion sound. We found them all martyred in the same place. My brother, Samih, was taking the position of kneeling to Al Kiblah like he was praying smilingly. I hanged, kissed, and covered him then the ambulance took them to the hospital. I'm still keeping his picture on the mobile.

I just want to mention that my father was taking care of a little cat. It had never left him till it died with him. Glory to Allah! Their souls have stepped up to complain of the oppression to Allah.

Q Who were martyred in this massacre?

- My father, Abu Nabil Al Na'oq, 73, concerned all about creating an educated generation in this country as he always believed that education is a powerful weapon to face the enemy.

- My father's friend, Mohammad Abdullah Al Zamlia, 65, who was my uncle.

- Fadi Abdullah, who was studying engineering at Islamic University and our neighbor, was very ambitious and was seeking for worships.

- Samih Al Na'oq, Abu Mohammad, 39, was working at Abu Al Khair mosque.

- Fadi Taiseer Abdullah, 23, was martyred in Egypt, where he had had treatment.

- My elder brother, Nabil Al Na'oq, and his two sons who got married three days before the war.

- My mother, Om Nabil.

Q. In brief, how was your brother's Samih Al Na'oq life?

Samih was born in 1970. He studied at Jabalia Primary, Jabaila Preparatory, and then Al Faloja high school. He got the admission to study in the Egyptian universities/science college. On his way to Egypt, the Israeli army arrested him for 6 months; afterwards he got arrested for several times and could not join the university.

After he had been released, he was enrolled to engineering college in Islamic University. Yet, the Israeli forces exiled the all lecturers of Islamic University especially those of engineering college. So, Samih joined the science college – mathematics and he superiorly achieved the third level.

A ceremony was held honoring him in the presence of Hanan Ashrawi. Samih refused to shake hands with her and she got upset thinking that was a religious discrimination. He explained to her the Islamic point of view in such situation by placing his hand on his chest as a way of greeting her and she understood. He got arrested by the preventive security forces in Gaza for he disagreed the so-called peace process with Israel which was assigned by our leaders. He was ridiculously accused of supporting resistance.

I was calling Samih the quiet persevering man as he made his way throughout difficulties. The government rejected to assign him as a teacher, so he worked at Dar Al-Arqam private school. Afterwards, he could work at the governmental schools after he had been recommended by the instructors for his great performance.

He taught in many schools; one in Shijaia district, Yafa School, then Zumo Martyrs School. After Hamas had taken control of Gaza, the government in Ramallah cut off his salary. Later, he worked in the Internal Security Service since he was intelligent and persevering.

Samih, may Allah have mercy upon him, and his friend Abu Baker were visiting the poor in the area and serving at Abu Al Khair mosque. They were teaching the Muslim young to worship and love Allah and his messenger. All that became good memories.

He was taking care of all the family affairs and solving any problems. Moreover, he was giving money to poor families. After he had been martyred, we told them that they would continue taking this money every month in the name of Samih.

Q. Talk about Abu Al Khair mosque.

This mosque included many martyrs. Some of them fell in Al Furkan Battle such as; Abdullah Owda Sha'ban; Ibrahim Rayan, the son of Pro Nizar Rayan; and Mohammad Faryd, Abdulla Obied and Eyad Hassan Obied who were martyred through confrontation with the enemy in Abd Rabouh. They could kidnap an Israeli soldier and kill a dog. The Israeli soldiers sent them one of the area people who negotiated them for 24 hours without avail. So, the Israeli occupation forces shelled the house where they were fortifying.

Q. what miracles did you hear that it had happened during Al Furkan battle?

The Furkan Battle has a strategic dimension that some may not realize; the occupation forces started a war of 23 days without achieving firstly their current goals of stopping the missiles and preventing the resistance from being armed; secondly their long-range goals of making the Palestinian people to rebel against the leadership in Gaza and to seek making peace with the occupation.

One of the miracles is that the Israeli army announced retreating while they have already retreated a half hour before the announcement. In addition, it was easy to find the martyrs' bodies quickly, though the Israeli army was destroying the houses

completely above their dwellers. For example, 18 martyrs were pulled out from the debris of the martyr Nizar Rayan's house, releasing musky smell, in only a half hour.

Al Sifa, an agricultural area to the north of Beit Lahia, is bordered by sea to the west, Suboh and Ma’roof families and Biet Lahia to the east, occupation settlements to the north, and Al Attatra and Al Salatin areas to the south.

War conditions

The war against Gaza started by aerial shelling to many sites such as the northern area, which belongs to different families; Hamada, Halima, Al Salatin, Al Attatra, Al Da’or, and Abu Khosa, three locations for the authority forces, and Al Sudanya area on the sea. We left the farm and ran away our homes once the attack happened.

At evening, the occupation started shelling the farms and greenhouses by battery and military vehicles. This war was too serious and unexpected if compared to previous invasions over the area. On Saturday at 09:00 pm, the warplanes shelling continued to midnight, and the occupation landed troops at farms and free areas. Northern and western farms such as Abu Hamada Al Da’or’s, Abu Halima’s, and Abu Khosa’s were targeted. Houses belonging to Abu Rajab Al Zahar, Emran, Sa’d Allah Abu Halima, Abu Ali Abu Halima, and others were also targeted by phosphoric bombs causing harmful stinky black smoke.

Overland invasion

On 4th Jan. 2009 – Sunday, 03:30 pm, we were at home when three bombs hit the house and leading to the martyrdom of Sa’d Allah Abu Halima and his son Zaid, Hamza, Shahd, and Ghada Abu Halima as the phosphoric bombs burnt their bodies,

and for sorry, we didn’t know how to relieve them and extinguish the fire. Moreover, the cruel occupation forces opened fire against ambulances and prevented them from transferring the martyrs, so they were transferred by a farm vehicle.

The martyrs are:

- Sa’d Allah Abu Halima, 45, farmer.

- Ghada Abu Halima, 20, her daughter Farah, 3 years old, is injured.

- Hamza Abu Halima, 10.

- Abd Al Rahim Abu Halima, 13.

- Zaid Abu Halima, 12.

- Shahd Abu Halima, 16 months old.

Later, the occupation forces opened fire on the vehicle near Omar Ben Al Khatab School. It was damaged and the drivers, Mohammad and Mattar Abu Halima, were martyred while their bother, Omar, was injured in his left hand. We ran away with the bleeding injured, as fast as we could, leaving the martyrs behind. The occupation army prevented us from transferring the bodies, so they stayed 18 days in open air. Dogs exhumed the legs of Shahd Abu Halima. Two days before the withdrawal, ICRC could transfer the martyrs to Kamal Odwan Hospital.

The house was inflamed by phosphor. There were writings on the walls like “We are coming back, Gaza!” and drawings for the so-called Israel flag in addition to Palestine map with two blue stars written in the middle of it. The farms with all they contained; wells, trees, poultry and ranches, were completely destroyed.

A massacre committed in the area

At 01:00 am, the house of Al Zahar Ramadan Abu Halima was shelled by a rocket and three bombs. The house, which is located in Al Sifa area, Al Attatra, beside Al Da’or’s, was seriously damaged and the owners, Al zahar, Mohammad Al Zahar Abu Halima, 45, and his son, 18, were critically injured. They were transferred to the hospital by a cart horse since it wasn’t possible for ambulances to get them.

Another crime

The blind and sick 55 lady, Ghanima Abu Halima, was executed by shooting her 10 bullets in head while she was in her bed. She remained 20 days till the war ended.

On Sunday 04th Jan. 2009, he was targeted with his friends by a reconnaissance plane while they were just sitting and talking beside their house door, so he died and his friends were severely injured. That was at 10:00 am.

The geographic features:

The sea is to the west. The occupation settlements are to the north. Gaza is to the south, and Beit Lahia is to east.

War conditions

The invasion began in parallel to shelling many sites less than 500 meters far from our house, especially the agricultural areas that belong to Al Da’or, Hamada, Abu Khousa, Ma’roof, and Suboh. The shelling was accompanied with heavy flying of reconnaissance warplanes. The occupation forces dropped leaflets asking people to leave the place, but we decided to stay home. The family members were eighteen. We prepared ourselves and the vital needs for the hard invasion.

The massacre

At 04:00 pm, our house, which is 300m² and located near Al Omra mosque, was targeted directly by three phosphoric bombs. My father and my brothers were martyred. My wife was injured but three months later she died. My mother, Sabah Salama Suliman Abu Halima, 45, and my daughter, Farah, suffered burns.

The area became a closed military zone. No ambulances could arrive, so we had to transfer the martyrs’ bodies by a tractor. Beside Omar Ben Al Khatab School, the occupation soldiers opened fire directly on us, so the drivers, Mohammad Hekmet Abu Halima and Mattar Sa’d Abu Halima, were martyred. The others ran away lest the fire shooting. However, Omar Abu Halima, 18, who kept running with his mother, was injured in his hand.

After 300 m, the occupation forces asked me to take off my clothes for checking. They threw sand in my face and opened fire. I was taking the burned injuries; my daughter, my sister, my wife, and my sister Shahd, 18 months. The soldiers took Shahd and put her down on the ground, and I could take my wife and my daughter by car, where 200 people were on it. The car belongs to Ayman Abu Halima.

The bodies that were left:

There were the bodies of Shahd Sa’d Allah Abu Halima, Mattar and Mohammad Abu Halima. The bulldozer passed over their bodies. Dogs exhumed the legs of Shahd Abu Halima. They were left 12 days in open air. Later, the occupation forces let ICRC take the burnt bodies which had no features, (Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of Affairs).

Mohammad Abu Halima and Mattar Abu Halima, the tractor drivers who were transferring the injured people, were executed by shooting them intensively and directly. My daughter and my wife, who had a severe second-degree burn all over her body, were transferred to Egypt to get the medical care. Though, my wife was martyred three months later while my daughter Farah was cured.

Symptoms resulting from exposure to phosphor:

- Shortness of breath because of the stinky smell released when it’s fired.

- Strong itching and skin redness.

Returning back & Damages

• The house didn’t fit for living because of what the phosphoric bombs had done of burning and devastating.

• The occupation forces stole an amount of NIS 30.000 stored in the wardrobe.

• The occupation forces pissed everywhere at home like beasts.

• The occupation forces swept away the all plant and animal farms in the northern and eastern areas which belong to Sa’d Allah Abu Halima, Abu Ayman Abu Halima, Mattar Abu Halima, Nizar Abu Halima, and Ahmed Abu Halima.

• The occupation forces destroyed a lot of tools and instruments used in planting and they killed the livestock and chickens. They destroyed the green houses and wells.

Killing a woman inside her house

Ghanima Mas’od Abu Halima was a 55 old blind woman. She had suffered cancer for 10 years. She was executed inside her house, located beside Al Omra mosque, by shooting her in the head while she was sleeping. I didn’t see this crime myself as I was in Egypt with my wife and my daughter for treatment.

At 01:30 pm, Lu’ai Yahia Abu Halima and his friends, Ibrahim Redwan Abu Halima, Harb Ibrahim Abu Halima, and Ryad Rabi’a, were targeted by a reconnaissance warplane. Lu’ai was martyred and his friends had serious injuries such as dismemberment. Their ages were 18-20.

The destroyed houses include

- A totally destroyed house belongs to Ahmed Khudiar.

- An almost entirely destroyed house belongs to Sa’d Allah Abu Halima.

- Partially destroyed houses belong to Omar Abd Al Karim Al Sabe’a Abu Halima and Zeyad Abu Halima. All these houses were shelled by phosphoric bombs, warplanes rockets, and military vehicles bombs, thus it became a sad ghost town.

It’s a border area whose peaceful people work in planting. They don’t work within any faction and their land wasn’t used for digging tunnels as the occupation claimed.

War beginning

The first day

On Saturday, they started the overland invasion to the area. People left their homes and ran away in fear of the indiscriminate cruel bombs and explosive shells. Children were scared to death. Mothers screamed for help. Electricity and contact lines were cut off. The occupation forces announced that the area became a closed military zone, and they landed troops in the western area which is an agricultural area, including Doghit settlement, inhabited by the Khousa family.

People thought that the occupation forces wouldn’t come close if they lighted the houses. Hence, my brother Mohammad and I went home to do this, but unexpectedly our house was bombed and we had no wound.

In that time, we heard the military vehicles sound beside the borders, so we thought we were safe. But actually, they were in the area and it seemed that they used silencers.

After we prayed Al Maghreb, my uncle Sa’ed, his aunt, and I went out leaving the house, yet on midway they stopped saying that they wouldn’t repeat the 1984 Nakba. I continued walking to the house of Abu Khader Allouh, where my mother and Mohammad were living.

In the same time, a young man told us that disguised Special Forces in Arab clothes surrounded the area killing and destroying whatever and whoever they saw.

I left Abu Khader Allouh’s house heading to my married sister’s house. I kept calling my mother and Mohammad till the contacts broke down. Later, the house of Abu Ali Al Zahar was shelled by a phosphoric bomb causing injuries.

The second day:

The aggressive Zionist shelling intensified in particular over the American University and the agricultural areas. The occupation forces sat atop high buildings to cover eyesight extending to Omar Ben Al Khatab School. People did not feel their moves since the warplanes had a huge sound besides the children screaming.

The third day:

The shelling became more and more aggressive. We heard a lot of cruel massacre stories thereon everyone left his house and property for dear life.

During the truce imposed by the occupation forces, my mother and Mohammad went back home. Yet, the area was surrounded and the shelling intensified. My mother got a bullet in her flank while she was feeding the birds, so Mohammad couldn’t get out the house.

Massacres:

When the occupation army retreated on 18th Jan 2009, we got back and started moving out the martyrs. My mother and my brother were executed beside the house door. They were shot three meters far. A bullet entered my mother’s abdomen and existed through her back. She got also seven bullets in different places of the body.

My brother, Mohammad, got four bullets in his chest, one down his back, and another one in his head. We saw signs of torture on their bodies as they were checked and stripped of their clothes. Blood was around the house pointing that they pulled Mohammad around while he was injured. I think that this crime took place at 02:00, but I am not sure whether it was am or pm as the wall clock wasn't working because a bullet hit it at 02:20.

I kissed my mother and my brother (May Allah Have mercy on them) and transferred them by a cart horse because ambulances couldn’t go into such a devastated area. The house was partially demolished by shells and bombs.

My mother is, 60, called Jamila Abd Al Aziz Al Da’or. She was born in 1948 from the occupied Herbia town 1948. My brother, 31, is called Mohammad Ahmed Mohammad Al Da’or (Abu Ahmed). He was married and a father of a boy and three girls. He was a farmer.

Some martyrs’ names:

• Fatima Fayez Al Haw, 19.

• Randa Al Haw, 36. She was married and mother of nine children. At 02:00 am their house, located beside Abu Al Qumsan towers in the north of Gaza Strip, was targeted by a warplane missile. Yet, nobody got hurt, and they ran to a safe place inside the house or as they thought. One hour later, the place, where they were, was targeted directly and their bodies were scattered. The martyrs, Fatima, Randa, and some of her children, were buried in the Beit Lahia cemetery.

• Om Barakat, a sick and blind 70 years old woman, was executed by shooting her directly in head. Her son departed the house leaving her behind for his severe fear.

During the first days of war:

The house of Sa’ed Abu Halima was shelled by two phosphoric bombs. Sa’ed and his sons were martyred and then transferred by a farm vehicle. Another vehicle was transferring eighty persons when the occupation forces stopped it in Al Attatra and opened fire against the car. The vehicle, which was moving away the martyrs, was destroyed, and the driver got killed. Moreover, dogs exhumed one of the martyrs’ bodies. The driver of the second vehicle was targeted too, and the eighty persons were detained in the stores of Abu Ashraf Suboh. The occupation forces used dogs to catch anybody.

Martyrs:

Ahmed Khudair was martyred when a phosphoric bomb hit his house and many got injured.

Women were unclothed, ravished, and subjected for execution with their husbands in Beit Lahya – Al Attatra.

We saw gallows in Omar Ben Al Khatab School, where the ground was full of blood.

One of the war remains:

Three months after war, a man was cultivating his farm when a phosphoric bomb came out the sand and fired, so his leg got burnt to bone. Trees turned yellow and spent.

Heading toward Khoza’a

Q. Why did you go to Khoza’a?

There was intensive shelling, and we got informed about the falling of some injuries. So, I went there at 07:30 and brought up one of the injuries to the hospital. While I was at the hospital at 08:00 am, I was informed about an injured woman called Rawhia Al Najar. I answered the call and moved to the place directly. When I was getting in the road where the injured woman was, Israeli Special Forces opened fire straightly against the ambulance, so I turned right to a blocked side road. The occupation forces kept opening fire against the house beside me, so I called the emergency department at Nasser Hospital and the Palestinian Red Crescent in order to coordinate with ICRC to get me out. It took us 45 minutes while I was in the ambulance with one of the injured woman’s relatives.

Seriousness of the situation

Q. How were the circumstances pending your existence in the ambulance?

There were huge and intensive terrifying shelling and shooting fire. It was incredibly serious, therefore I asked the owners of the house beside to let me in. When I was about to do so, the occupation forces opened fire violently leading to the explosion of oxygen cylinder beside the house door. Some of the house members fell fainted because of the smell. I tried to relieve them, but the situation was getting worse. I called back the PRC and emergency department to report how serious it became. A little while, a reporter of Al Quds channel called me and I provided him with the situation details on air, and so did I with many local radios that called. One of the calling was a private number for somebody who identified himself as “Abu Ramy” from “Beit Salem” – Jerusalem. He asked me a lot about the situation and the people I was with. Also, he asked me not to worry as he would make some contacts with the Israeli army trying to get me out of the area. A few minutes later, I got another call from an Israeli one as I thought. He asked me different questions from the previous ones like if I were in or out the ambulance, how many floors the house was, and how many injuries were there. I told him there had been fainting and suffocating cases caused by the phosphoric bombs. He asked me if there were any armed persons at the house and I denied. He ended the call saying that he would call again after a while, and indeed he called back three minutes later. He said that the Israeli army had claimed that armed persons were existing at the house.

I answered him that he could hear nothing but screaming of women and children, fire shooting, and bombing. He wondered twice if I would get out alone or with the children and the women who had been suffocated. I told him that I would get out by ICRC vehicle. He said that there was somebody wanted for Israel and if I told him about his place, he would get me out of the area. Hence, I was sure that he was an Israeli intelligence agent and I gave him the full name and the identity no. of the house owner to point out that it wasn’t the person they were looking for. After that call, I got another one from an Israeli number “032”. It was an Israeli woman claiming that she worked for a medical organization. After informing her about what exactly happened, she clarified that she did not work for the Israeli intelligence. But suddenly while we were talking, a huge explosion occurred, so I lost her. I tried to recall PRC and emergency department once again as the situation was getting harder.

Call for help

We made a call for help while talking to Aljazeera Channel showing how serious the situation was in Khoza’a. In addition, we made some contacts with the neighboring houses wondering about the tanks movement, and they reported that the tanks had withdrewn. They kept trying to get me out and making calls, but ICRC couldn’t answer as there was no coordination with the Israeli side at night.

At the house there were some men who insisted to explore what was going on. They asked for stretcher when they found the martyr “Rawhia Al Najar” who had remained for twelve hours bleeding to death on the ground.

Q. What’s your word for the world?

I call upon the world, human rights organizations, ICRC, and the international associations which work for protecting humans to see how Israel treats the medical staffs so badly and illegally. I was exposed for shooting several times when I was transferring injured people or martyrs in Gaza Strip. I’ve never seen that medical staffs are treated in such way in any place in the world.

Q. How were the conditions in your area in the beginning of the war?

The war started on 27th Dec. 2008, Saturday morning. On that day, I was doing my work as usual at school when we heard a huge explosion sound. Firstly, we thought it breaking of the sound barrier done by a plane, but we saw that fragments scattered over the school. The shelling targeted the civil administration which is 300 meter far from the school, so, nobody stayed at it. At 01:00 pm, we heard a shocking explosion sound, and the targeted house was for Al Ghoul family. I was extremely worried about my youthful sons, so I sent them to Jabalia Camp. Eight of the family members remained at home including me, my wife, and my children.

Q. Were any leaflets thrown over your area?

No, but when I went to school I found some of them asking people for leaving.

The beginning of overland invasion

Q. How was it at the beginning of overland invasion?

Our neighbors decided to leave their homes making big noises. Also my wife wanted to take the children and to go to Jabalia, but I refused and persisted to stay home.

Invasion & martyrdom

Q. How did you know that the occupation forces got in your area?

We knew that from the massacres they committed and from everything they destroyed. I went to stay at my brother’s home upon his request. But, shelling and bombing continued increasingly and intensively. Later, ICRC staff told us that it was urgent to leave the house, so my brother asked them if they could guarantee the way

We regretted that we hadn’t got the children out of the house especially when the situation got too serious and the tanks centered in front of the house. We felt death so close. In those moments we saw smog coming out of the kitchen where my daughter and my nieces were. The house was bombed again while we were in the hall unable to make a move. I broke the kitchen's closed door and I could take out only the first girl. Bombing intensified badly, so we left the house without taking the other martyred girls. Some young men helped us taking them out to Khadamat Club in Jabalia. I was injured all that time, so I got transferred to the hospital to take off the fragments. Later, we arranged a funeral for the martyrs.

Q. What are the martyrs’ names?

Q. Describe the damages in your house.

It was partially and completely destroyed. The southern side was burnt. Doors and windows were broken. Furniture and computers were ruined. Everything was gone.

Q. Talk about your martyred daughter.

Nour was distinguished in everything. She was cheerful and had good manners, and people loved her. She was one of the top at her school, May Allah have mercy on her and bring her into His paradise.

Q. Has your area ever been invaded?

It always happens. The IOF and their commandos invade the area for killing. They come with their tanks and bulldozers to destroy nothing but everything despite their claims that their army is the best and good mannered, but it’s clearly the opposite. Maneuvers always happen in the northern area.

Q. How many times has the area been invaded before?

Many times! Two years ago, they invaded Al Sifa area from the northern side where Abu Halima family lives. Last time, they got in through the sea side killing many people belonging to Al Attar and Khudair families. They want land without people, but that could happen only in their dreams. We are going not to leave our homes however dangerous they are.

The area condition during the aerial shelling

Q. How was the condition before the overland invasion?

The war started on 27th Dec. 2008 when eighty warplanes attacked and destroyed all sites including the civil police forces that protect people. The warplanes kept targeting everything throughout the war to destroy the infrastructure. The sky was full of dark bleeding clouds. The IOF used the whole military facilities in this war; warplanes, submarines, tanks, military vehicles, and the internationally banned phosphoric bombs which left severe impacts on those afflicted with.

Q. How did you deal with the aerial shelling during the first ten days?

Nothing but horror, fear, and worry! Nobody supports us even the Islamic countries that left us alone when we needed them badly. We are unarmed civilians. Our fighters don’t have anti-aircraft or anti-tank and their tools are too simple.

Q. How did you respond to leaflets throwing?

Before 27th Dec. 2008, the warplanes dropped leaflets over Jabalia town asking us to leave our homes on border. Similar to Al-Nakba of 1984, they want to replace us with Zionist Jewish. We have no place but our land and leaving it means the death itself.

The beginning of overland invasion

Q. when did the overland invasion get started?

It stated on Saturday evening in the beginning of January. Tanks shot smoke shells, so we couldn’t see anything. Land forces of 5000 soldiers entered from every side and some parachuted over the houses roofs.

Q. When did you know about the land forces existence in the area?

We know about them on Saturday night. By Sunday morning they were centered in many locations. They entered the schools, dug holes and buried the tanks in so as not to be seen. They used rocket launchers against us “the civilians”. It was said that Israel spent all its ammunition in this war against unarmed civil people as if they fought a powerful country.

Q. How did you deal with the Zionist overland existence in the area?

It was too serious. They targeted water tanks and demolished houses. They broke into my house. The scene was extremely horrifying. The house of Mattar Abu Halima was targeted by a phosphoric bomb killing five of his children, his daughter-in-law, and one of his relatives. The family went out to bury their martyrs, but the occupation forces opened fire against them. Four got injured, and we relieved them. About 08:00 am, 500 of the occupation forces or more broke into Omar Ben Al Khatab School, and 200 tanks centered in the west, south, and north. They shelled our house while hundred persons were in including some of the Abu Halima family. We felt stones scatter and women and children screamed. The tanks kept launching bombs, so some men broke the wall allowing us to get out under fire. Then, we went to the downtown which was full of soldiers, so we intended to Al Salatin area then to UNRWA schools.

Q. Please, talk about the tractor massacre as I was informed that you had witnessed it.

Right, I’ve already said that the occupation forces shelled the house of Mattar Abu Halima leading to five persons killed. His daughter-in-law was still alive, so her husband’s cousin took her quickly on a tractor. The Zionist soldiers who were in Omar Ben Al Khatab School opened fire against them and killed the relievers. They put down the bleeding woman on the ground, and an Israeli bulldozer wept away the tractor including the men. The woman was transferred to a hospital out of the country, yet she was martyred later.

The way to the UNRWA school

Q. How was your way to the UNRWA school?

We went to a school beside Al-Swaidy on 6th Jan. 2009. It was the beginning of dispersion. We went there with nothing but our clothes on us. Classes were full of desks and chairs. The weather was so cold and the day was rich of sadness and sorrow as everyone lost a dear. Neighbors brought us food, water, and blankets. We stayed there from 6th to 17th Jan. 2009.

Q. How did you spend your time at the school?

We were totally scared as the occupation forces were shelling even the UNRWA schools, and three persons from Al Salatin were martyred. But the most dangerous was the shelling of the UNRWA headquarters.

Q. What relief did UNRWA offer to the people?

UNRWA didn’t offer sufficient relief. We got help from neighbors and from UAE charity association. There were 1400 persons at the school and 60 in the class. We spent three days without blankets. UNRWA was late to offer help.

Q. What was the news you were hearing about your area?

It was too bad as the Zionist forces destroyed everything. But in the same time, the fighters were resisting fiercely, so the occupation forces couldn’t make a step forward. They feared the fighters’ showing up from the tunnels. One of the detained said that an Israeli soldier declined to go forward in fear of meeting one of Ezzdeen Al-Qassam

brigades. The detained swore that he heard the soldier talking about ghosts dressed in white fighting them, by Grace of Allah.

Q. Did the Zionist soldiers get in your house?

Yes, the house is totally burned. Walls are full of holes, and columns are broken. My son’s house is completely destroyed and unfit for living. It’s the same with my second son’s, Reziq, and my brother’s.

The area condition after withdrawal

Q. What did you find in your house after the withdrawal?

We found a lot of bullets. Also, their rubbish and diapers were everywhere. The house was totally burned. They stole the whole medicine and drugs which were in my son’s pharmacy. What they did denies their claims of having good manners. Their cruelty is represented in killing a poor 100-year-old woman by an Israeli officer when his soldiers refused to do that. They killed Mohammad Al Da’oor and his mother. Moreover, they killed a sleeping women belonging to Abu Halima family on her bed. They have no manners as far apart as sky and earth.

Q. For whom the destroyed houses belong?

The totally destroyed houses are about 1400 belonging to me, Sami Suboh, Khalil Al Attar, Jammal Al Attar, Ahmed Al Attar, and Mahmoud Miqat whose house was of four floors, and more. These houses became unfit for inhabitation.

Q. Did the occupation forces sweep away the agriculture lands and wells?

Sure, they swept it all; a dunam and a half greenhouse and two dunams of mine planted with strawberry and onions, two dunams planted with potatoes belonging to Zaki Suboh, vast lands belonging to Abu Halima Family. The non swept lands and wells were destroyed by phosphoric bombs aiming at destructing the infrastructure and forcing us to leave our land. This is not going to be happened Inshallah (God Willing).

They did. They also put the slogans of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Popular Jabha to fake people.

Q. Did a lot of the occupation forces get killed?

Yes, but they don’t admit that. As a proof, the occupation soldiers forced an old woman and her family to leave her house, but when she couldn’t walk, they allowed her to get back. Hence, she found three killed soldiers at her house and she thought that they were fighters, so she said “sleep my son. The army is still here.” The occupation put their killed soldiers’ corpses in morgue then announces that they were killed in road accidents.

Q. What were the slogans done on walls by the Zionist soldiers?

They were frightening slogans like “We’re coming back to destroy everything”. That has badly affected children and women. People are still worried about their coming back. They claim that the Natzi committed crimes and massacres against them, but indeed they do against us.

Q. You witnessed the massacre committed against your son, Mustafa Hussain Eid, and your brother, Sami Abdrabouh. Please talk about it.

The Zionist warplanes started shelling everywhere using phosphoric bombs. I suffer from a heart disease, and I found difficulty in breathing so I ran away with my husband and my family. It was about 50-60 planes flying above us. Next morning I went back to the house holding a white flag to take some stuff. I asked the grocer who was with us to open his store as I wanted to buy some food for my children. It was so risky to get out especially without a certain time of the truce, but I had to. I took the food and went home to prepare breakfast but my son and my brother stayed there at the store. At 11:00 am, the store was targeted by a rocket, so I hurried there where I was the first to arrive. The place was like a pool of blood and the scattered flesh swam in it. I saw a large-scale killing of people everywhere including one called Sufian Abdrabouh. I started looking for my son who was still dressing the sleepwear. When I found him, I removed dust from his face but he was gone! I saw my brother holding my leg. I yelled for help but nobody answered. I started running and shouting “Allah is greater! Allah is greater!” as I was seriously shocked.

Some people put the martyrs on a cart horse but the warplane targeted them again so they left them. Later, they could transfer the martyrs to the hospital. Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.

Q. How did you get injured on the war first day?

I was on my way home from my school, Ein Al-Helwa, walking with my friends and teachers. When we separated, the air strikes got started. Suddenly I fell on the ground without knowing where I was. Somebody covered me thinking that I was martyred. I was injured, so some people picked me up and took me to the hospital where my uncle, Ahmed Al Sinwar, and his two injured daughters were receiving treatment for their injuries.

Q. What did you see while you were at Al-Shifa Hospital?

I saw terrifying scenes; martyrs without heads, legs, and huge injuries. While I was lying on the bed, another severely injured one beside me looked at me then he died at once. Thus, I covered my face.

Q. How did you feel when you knew about your younger brother’s martyrdom?

I was so sad when I came back home and knew about him. My family cried while

they were bidding farewell to him. Also I did and wanted to go with the family to bury

him but my father refused because of my injury. Later, my health deteriorated and I

was transferred to the Red Crescent in Khan Younis for medication.

Project Report

It gives me pleasure to translate eyewitness testimonies of the Israeli aggressive

war against Gaza, mainly the massacres, as I see the goal of this work goes

beyond any academic fulfillment. With every single story I was planted in to

live its woes. Many Palestinians were killed. Homes, houses, and entire farms

were totally destroyed. Hospitals were flooded with serious unfamiliar injuries.

The so called Israel launched its war using internationally prohibited weapons

against unarmed single people committing endless series of massacres.

Palestinians’ suffering goes on to prove to the whole world that the alleged

democratic state of Israel is just a pack of lies.

Initially, it was hard for me to do such task since I had some trauma after the

Israeli war, yet this experience taught me that pain could be sometimes turned

into trenchant weapon. As a translator, I intended to employ those feelings to

make the text speakable as much as possible as a kind of emotional translation.

That brings me to tackle the considerable translation strategies and techniques

that I acquired during the diploma and which I effortfully tried to apply where

possible. Some of them are clarified hereinafter this introductory part.

Once the targeted material became clear for me to translate, I firstly read it to

come out with an initial classifying step. It's rather like diagnostic process for

the text to determine the type of it, internationally and commonly used terms for

such type of language, source language (SL) phrasing weakness, ambiguous

meaning, and many others. To demonstrate how I dealt with each case, I bring

you some examples below:

• Paraphrasing the SL

One of the SL problems I faced was the weak phrasing as it is eye witness

testimony of simple people expressing events inconsistently, so it required

paraphrasing the SL firstly in order to translate it into the TL easily, as

shown in the table: (Witness 4, narrated by Mohammad Al Dabagh, Q2)

• Addition

Some points needed to add more information in TL to avoid

misunderstanding and to clarify the meaning as the case with (Witness 5,

narrated by Abu Saqer, Q4).

consolation. At first glance, the reader of the SL understands that the talk is about the owner

of the house where the consolation was being conducted while it's not true, so it

was necessary to add some clarifying information to avoid such confusion.

• Non literal translation

In some places, it was preferable not to translate literally to accommodate with

meaning required to reflect. In "Witness 6, narrated by Mo'een Mohammad

Mohammad Al Na'oq, Q1" I found it better to translate (تربينا) into (we have

absorbed) as children are like sponge that absorb anything comes by.

TL SL With this respect, we stress for the so called Israel that whatever crimes they do, they will not uproot our will and principles we have absorbed since childhood. They will not be safe in Palestine.

• Verifying some information

I had to call one witness to remove the ambiguity of some point he mentioned so I could translate it correctly regarding whom he informed about his name and identity no.; was he the wanted one or the house owner?, as shown in the table: (Witness 10, Meeting with ambulance officer, Q1)

• Being loyal to the authentic text

As a translator, I did my best to be loyal to the authentic text, while in the

same time I kept my moral as a Palestinian towards our case. I used words

and terms that perfectly serve the meaning as the original text reflects a

catastrophic and tragic events committed mercilessly by the aggressive

occupation forces. Hence, I felt it's my duty to show the contradictory status

of this Zionist entity when it alleges democracy and obeying laws while it

commits crimes against the unarmed single people in Gaza Strip. So, I

translated (اسرائيل) into (so called Israel), and (اليهود) into (Zionist Jewish) to

make sure that we don't mean any Jewish person, just only those who occupy

our Palestinian land.

• Helping tools and sources

In order to accomplish a solid translation as much as I can, I got vantages

from every possible resource I had in my hand. For example, I used internet

in general surfing certain websites in regard to my project topics in

particular, besides some English-English and Arabic-English software

dictionaries e.g.:

- Google search engine

- Babylon software dictionary

- www.thefreedictionary.com

- www.wikipedia.com

- Other websites

• Contacting my supervisor

I kept in touch with my project supervisor, Dr. Ayman Al Halaq, via the

electronic email after he suggested me the material that I translated. When I

finished translating the whole project, I sent it to Dr. Ayman. One week later, he

sent it back to me with some notes and slight modifications that I applied them

all.

Generally speaking, I enjoyed translating this project despite the difficulties I

faced represented in the traumatic case I suffered from as a Palestinian who

lived the war days, not committing to time as I work most of the day, the poor

source language phrasing, and others. I see this project as not only an area

throughout I prove my skills as a translator, but also it's the truth that the whole

world should know to realize how brutish the occupation is.
