Josh Stevenson was only 14 years old when he started working at his favorite hangout spot in Oakdale – Blue Ribbon Bait & Tackle. “I worked in the shop and as a guide to fund my fishing habit,” says Josh. A Tartan High School and University of Minnesota graduate, Josh was planning to continue with graduate school and pursue a career in teaching, when the owner of Blue Ribbon approached him about buying the store. In 2004, Josh’s career took a turn as he assumed ownership.
Blue Ribbon Bait & Tackle has a fun and open atmosphere with an extensive line of tackle, live bait, and fishing guide services. Their goal for every angler is to feel well prepared and equipped. Josh’s passion for fishing also landed him his wife, Laura, whom he met on a guided fishing trip. Aside from caring for their three children, Laura, who also enjoys fishing – is involved in the business. “She is the behind-the-scenes person”, says Josh. “She handles the website and bookkeeping for the store so I can focus on running the business day-to-day.”
When it came time to do a major parking lot renovation project, Josh was referred to Lake Elmo Bank where he was able to take advantage of a business improvement loan, which is part of an initiative sponsored by LEB and the City of Oakdale. “My initial meeting with JoAn Hoffmann at LEB sold me,” recalls Josh. “She was more than a loan officer. She was there every step of the way. She was patient at every turn and made me feel comfortable throughout the process.”
Every good angler has a fish tale…but for Josh, these tales are true. In 1999, he caught the state record Tiger Musky in Lake Elmo – measuring 34 pounds and 12 ounces. Successful fishing tales such as this landed him a phone call and guided trip with Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker. “I enjoy connecting people with big fish...especially icons within the music industry,” says Josh.
If your business is in need of improvements, you may qualify for this program. Contact JoAn Hoffmann at [email protected] or 651.773.4727.
