Establish routines and monitor progress

4. Create termly or yearly Objective Lists for each group In order to use Accelerated Maths, you must first create an Objective List for each group within your class. We recommend the first objectives that you add be something that has been covered recently with the students, and then adding more objectives as you go along. Will you be adding objectives to follow the content of your lessons or will you be adding objectives to reinforce and review topics done previously? Please note, that although objectives can be deleted from a List at any time, the information in the Accelerated Maths reports is only shown for student progress on objectives currently within the List.

Tip: We recommend adding 10 objectives to start with, and add the subsequent objectives in multiples of 10 as and when required.

2. Schedule time for STAR Maths assessments Regular STAR Maths testing is important in tracking the growth and progress of your students. We recommend screening all students a minimum of four times a year, but consider whether more regular testing, such as every half-term or even every 3-4 weeks, would allow for more detailed progress monitoring for those students in intervention. Plan your testing ahead of time and set your STAR screening dates in the software.

3. Analysing STAR Maths data.Make sure to monitor the STAR Maths reports immediately following administering the assessment to ensure students are being assigned suitable objectives for their ability within AM. We recommend grouping each class for AM based on the STAR Maths results along with your own professional judgment. Also, regular monitoring of STAR Maths information will allow you to organise additional support for intervention students as and when required.

Get started

1. Understand Accelerated MathsTM (AMTM) and STAR MathsTM

Know what software you have and how it works. Have you identified the students you plan to use Accelerated Maths with? Are you using AM as a teaching tool in your maths lessons or as a specific lesson? Will you be using AM across one year group or across multiple years or just for certain students as an intervention?

Tip: Pilot with one class first.

6. Understand the Assignment TypesAccelerated Maths contains four main assignments that can be generated for students. We recommend starting out by assigning the relevant objectives to your students and then generating the Practice assignment as this will produce work at a suitable level of difficulty and pace for each student. Practices are personalised and generated automatically requiring minimal work from teachers. Once students show success on their Practices, you can introduce regular Test assignments to ensure they fully understand the topics. Exercises and Diagnostic tests can then be introduced further along your implementation.

Tip: We recommend you generate small Practices to start with and schedule regular testing, generally after every 3 or 4 Practices.

7. The student area in Accelerated Maths Once online work has been generated for the student, they will be able to access it using their login for Accelerated Maths, from within Renaissance Place. Each current assignment will be shown and must have every question answered before being marked and immediate feedback given. Assignments can be paused and resumed at any time before being reviewed and submitted for marking, and peer help can be accessed for any objective the student is currently working on, which can help with those students experiencing problems on certain objectives.

5. Prepare your classroomIf you plan on students completing their work online then you will need to think about scheduling regular time for them with tablets, computers or laptops. If you intend to print out the assignments as worksheets then you will need to think about access to a printer, as well as providing students with folders to store their work. In addition to this, paper assignments also require marking online, so some access to computers will still be required for these. Regardless of which method you use, think about providing each student with an exercise book for their working out, which can be referred back to in case of problems.

Monitoring

9. Analyse Accelerated Maths DataMake time to review both the Accelerated Maths Status of the Class and Diagnostic reports regularly. The Status of the Class report will show how each student is performing, and also if certain objectives are causing problems for a number of students. The Diagnostic report will detail the quality and quantity of each student’s maths practice across all assignments and objectives they have been working on.

10. Home Connect If you activate Home Connect for Accelerated Maths, then your students will be able to access any Practices or Exercises you have generated for them from home, as well as allowing them to view their progress. Parents can also review the students’ progress, whilst being kept informed of their child’s day-to-day success through the automated email feature.

8. Monitor the Assignment BookCheck the Assignment Book regularly as it will alert you to students who have run out of work, those who need testing, those who need intervention, and those who are falling behind. A student needs work? Generate them a new assignment. A student is ready to test on an objective? Generate a Test as soon as possible. A student is flagged for Intervention? Identify the topic and deliver one-to-one or group help, and generate an assignment on that specific objective to check their understanding. The Assignment Book also contains quick links to the most useful reports.

Renaissance Certification

Renaissance Certification guides successful implementation of Accelerated Maths at classroom and school levels.

Classes and schools can certify first for annual Model then Master status, acknowledging their success in implementing AM effectively using proven best practices. Those earning certification receive a letter to their Head Teacher, and a printed certificate to mark their achievement. A range of free resources (such as student incentives, posters and discounts) are also available.
