After a hot dry summer, we are back to usual fall weather, cool and wet. We are up and running with a good start. I’d like to begin by sharing several unsolicited compliments from several sources, one, from a visiting daytime custodian who was here to fill in for an illness. I greeted him as he was washing our outdoor windows heading out to the fields. I thanked him for working to keep our school clean. He responded by saying that he really enjoyed being at our school. He said he has been at all of the other secondary schools as a casual day time custodian and that he immediately noticed that here at ATSS he found the students to be the most polite and respectful and they would even open the door for him. I said yes I know we have a great student body. Then on another occasion, one of our District Administrators after a presentation by several of our teachers on how they are working to implement both new BC curriculum and Standards-Based Grading, informed me that we are one of the best kept secrets in the district. I have to say both our students and our teachers deserve to be recognized for their achievement, dedication and conduct. We are so proud to be ATSS Titans and you can be proud as parents, for the great example your sons and daughters are demonstrating here at our school. We are fast approaching our mid term time and we will be forwarding a marks/assessment summary for your child in the next few weeks. We will be having a day for parent teacher conferences on Nov. 23. Please note this date as we will give further instructions for how to sign up for a conference with your son or daughter’s teachers. Our Gr. 11s are scheduled to be away this Fri. (today) for a great opportunity for fun, challenge and team building. I would like to remind parents that this is considered a regular school day and is not an optional day. It should not be a day for students to stay home and we do not have any activities planned for them at school. We take the time and pay the expense for our students to experience what we believe is a very worthwhile activity unique to us as a school. We expect all of our Gr. 11s to be involved. We have a busy week coming up with a First Nations Qualena presentation, taking place Mon. afternoon for all of our Gr 9s and 10s. This presentation is designed to help us understand the impact of Residential Schools in the past. Parents are certainly welcome if they would like to join us for this presentation. This will be followed on Wed. by a WE day field trip to Vancouver for our leadership students. Photo retakes and the Grad Cruise on Thurs. The week will end with a Non-Instructional day where teachers will be in attendance with their provincial professional associations. The following week Wed. Nov. 1 will be the province’s Take Your Kid to Work Day. It will be expected that all of our Gr. 9 students will be with parents, uncles or siblings at their job location learning about what careers are out there. On the athletic front, our senior girls’ volleyball team is experiencing great success under the direction of their coach, Mr. Muermann, thus far being undefeated in regular league play. Our other volleyball teams are up and running as well engaging a number of our athletes in energizing activity. A big thanks to our coaches, Ms. Hunt, Mr. Hannah and Mr. Domke for their contribution to our athletic program. Basketball tryouts are already in session in preparation for the upcoming season. If you have any questions about school activities or procedures don’t hesitate to contact the office or me personally.
