The times in my crazy life when I’m the most grounded is when I’m making and eating soup. Some soups, like some days, are simple and comforting. Other soups are rich and complex, like days filled with unexpected events and magical creatures!
There are times when a soup does not work, no matter what ingredients are added or how the flavors are adjusted. These are “Bad Soup Days,” where nothing seems to go right.
This first zine and the others that will follow is a glimpse of my life. Soup reveals the “soup du jour” for every day I have drawn. As you are read-ing it, I’m inviting you to come to my table and share some soup with me.
Be sure to look for the next issue of Soup, and share your favorite soup recipes with me.
Happy readingand soup-slurping,

Carrot Ginger Soup8-10 carrots, large dice2 onions, medium dice2 cloves of garlic, minceda 1 inch piece of ginger, grated1-2 Tbsp white miso (or to taste)1-2 Bay leaves or lime leavessalt to taste
In a large pot, saute onion in oil or water for 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and saute for 1-2 minutes. Add car-rots, water to cover, and a few lime/bay leaves. Bring to a boil, then simmer until carrots are soft when poked with a knife. Ladle some of the liquid into a small bowl with the miso and mash miso with a spoon until blended. Add this back into the soup. Peel ginger, grate fiffiinely, and squeeze the juice from the blob of ginger into the soup. Finally, blend the soup in batches in a blender, or blend in the pot with a hand-held blender (a food-mill will also work for this). For a creamier soup add cream or coconut milk (or vegetarian milk of your choice). For a thinner soup, add more water.
Garnish with scallions and home-made croutons, if de-sired. Add some crusty bread for a simple, hearty meal.
