November 11, 2018

Dear Parishioners,

November is traditionally the month when we pray about and reflect on the gift of Stewardship. The United States Catholic Bishops have stated, “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10). What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.”

I believe that this definition of Stewardship strikes at the heart of what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus, to share God’s gifts and goodness in justice with others and then to return them with increase to the Lord, that really should be our goal, what we strive to do. All registered families in our parish community will soon receive the 2019 Annual Renewal of Treasure. This is the yearly opportunity all of us have to pray and consider once again our response to Christian Stewardship here in Saint Joseph Parish. You know far better than I do how many wonderful volunteers it takes to help make this parish a true reflection of our faith in Jesus. The time, talent and yes the treasure that each of us is prepared to invest in our parish is a sign of our belief that we are all called to give back to God and our community of faith of the blessings that God has given to us.

I am asking each of you, after prayer and reflection and discussion that you review your goodness to this parish family

and decide how best you can continue to support the work we do here at St. Joseph’s as a family of faith. I do understand that

our parish has been asked to endure a great deal recently and I am aware of what I am asking of you. The only way that we

can continue to do the work of the Lord here in Downingtown and beyond is through your goodness and your witness of faith.

I appreciate and give thanks for all of you and for your joy and your commitment to our parish. I try each and every day to

never take for granted the goodness you share with this family of faith. May God bless you and your families and may the

example of Saint Joseph our patron help to draw us closer to Jesus our brother and Savior.

Peace,

Fr. Steve Leva

11-21-18 - No gathering. Happy Thanksgiving!

RCIA is for those who have never been baptized, baptized in another denomination, or completing reception of the Sacraments of Initiation if already baptized a Catholic. Contact Kathy Thomas for more information at: ([email protected] or 610-873-8798).

Rite of Acceptance Sunday, November 11th at the 10:30 AM Mass

We gather the RCIA catechumens and candidates publicly for the first time to declare their intention to the Church, and the Church accepts them as persons who intend to become her members. God’s grace is bestowed on each person. This takes place after the homily so the entire community of believers is represented. Sponsors present each catechumen and candidate to the Church. Each is embraced by the Church as her own, with a mother’s love and concern. The Church will continue to nourish them with the Word of God and sustain them by means of her liturgical celebrations. They will receive additional blessings as we journey toward Easter to help them remain strong in their desire to receive the sacraments of Baptism and/or Confirmation and Eucharist. This year’s catechumens (those not yet baptized) include: Shawn Carretta, Ryan Chacanias, Iona Inthaphone, Abby Lopez, Emily Savattieri, and Jayden Valentine. Our candidates for full communion of the Catholic Church (those baptized into another ecclesial denomination) are: Lindsay Angstadt, Darryl Forster, Noell Lemmen, Brandon Rogenmusser, Stephanie Salvatore, Aaron White, and Marsha Wickes. Candidates who are baptized Catholics seeking to complete reception of the Sacraments of Initiation are: Ana Adorno, Luke Mastrorilli, and Kyle Rheiner.

Lend a hand to help Safe Harbor

On the first Friday of every month, St. Joseph parishioners prepare, deliver, and serve dinner to 25 women residents at Safe Harbor in West Chester. Would you like to be part of this fulfilling – and needed – outreach?

We need volunteers to: • Prepare one of the components of the meal – a main dish, a vegetable, a starch, a salad, and a dessert. • Be part of the team that delivers and serves the meal.

We arrive at Safe Harbor at 4 p.m., serve between 4:30 and 5 p.m., then go home. If you are interested in volunteering on a rotating schedule or if you would like to learn more, please contact parishioner Elizabeth Sokol at [email protected].

The Loaves & Fishes Project

With the Loaves and Fishes Project, giving is as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-perishable

item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass. 2. Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet

on your right as you come into church. 3. Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team delivers the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, once a year - anytime. As a church family, we can make a much appreciated

contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week. Please contact Nancy Farrington at [email protected] or 610-620-3619 for more info.
