From the President:

Hello and Happy Spring!

Here we are in the year 2020 and I hope your year is going well.

As usual, in my thoughts to convey from the President of your Club, above all else, membership continues to be of importance. Meet the Member—Robert Scholz

The Johns Hopkins Club has been a fixture in Robert Scholz’s life, from early childhood to today. Born and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Scholz re-members fondly his parents, both members here, bringing him and his brothers and sisters to the Club for dinners and events. The children loved to run to the third floor of the Club and look out of the hallway window that overlooks the Main Dining Room, waving down to their parents and friends.

Mr. Scholz attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated with a degree in Social and Behavioral Science in 1973. He enjoyed the traditional campus environment of Hopkins, different than most other universities of the 1970’s. While on campus Mr. Scholz served on the Honor Commission as well as played intramural lacrosse.

After graduating with a law degree from the University of Maryland, Mr. Scholz took an associate position at the law firm Niles, Barton & Wilmer LLP where he practiced for 38 years, serving as the Managing Partner for 15 of those years. He recently retired from service as Chief Legal Counsel to State of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a position he was appointed to in 2014.

Mr. Scholz has served the state and community as Chair of the Maryland State Ethics Commission and Chair of the Baltimore County Ethics Commission, as well as on GBC’s Public Safety Committee. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Calvert Institute for Policy and Research and of the B&O Railroad Roundhouse Museum.

In 2002 Mr. Scholz joined the Board of Governors here at the Johns Hopkins Club. He served on the Board from 2002 until 2009, and was President of the Board from 2006 to 2008. As President Mr. Scholz worked to engage the Club members in a variety of social and board activities, instituting our very popular Book Club. In his free time, Mr. Scholz is an avid reader of fiction and nonfic-tion and takes courses in the University’s Odyssey program. Someday soon he’s going to get around to writing a novel.

Mr. Scholz and his wife Rebecca love visiting the Club, and have brought their family here to many wonderful gatherings over the years. He’s seen his son and daughter waving down at him from the third floor window, just like he used to do as a child. His son Ben even worked as a busser in the Main Dining Room. Mr. Scholz’s brother and sister are also current members of the Club.

The Club is proud to have been a part of so many of Mr. Scholz’s lifetime of memo-ries, and we are very thankful for his service and dedication to our grand tradition.

MCKIM CENTERSince 1999 the Club has been collecting Christmas presents and donating them to the McKim Community Center in Baltimore City. Again this past Christmas, thanks to the generous donations from our members, we were able to deliver lots of gifts to the center for their annual Christmas party. We received a letter of thanks from Dwight Warren, the Center’s Executive Director who was most ap-preciative of the Club’s continued support. Thanks everyone!

A Moment with Chef Patrick

sOH SO YOUNG!It’s that time, after the long cold winter, when I can’t help but think of one of my favorite Sinatra tunes. Francis Albert could spin a lyric and I love You Make Me Feel So Young. “You make me feels so young, you make me feel so spring has sprung and every time I see you grin, I’m such a happy individual.”

With spring comes renewed energy, a renewed sense of self. The trees are budding and popping with blossoms. The Daffodils are sprouting about in sunshine yellow and of course it’s time to go and tend to our herb garden. With warmer days, the scent of rain and lilac and a new crop begins.

Crops of new potatoes, turnips, beets, asparagus, leeks, carrots, cabbage, rhubarb, squash blossoms, sugar peas, strawberries and spring greens delight.

A simple pleasure at the Club is tending to our herb garden. Look for pictures in upcoming editions of the Club Herald. We use our herbs for decorating, garnishing, flavoring butters and oils and for accent flavors in cooking and drinks. There is also the peaceful, calming effect it has in our back courtyard.

When spring has sprung, feel fresh, renewed and happy. We all need more hap-piness. Thanks for reading,

LUNCH & LECTURE

WATERFRONT MANHATTAN: From Henry Hudson to the High Line A book talk by Kurt C. Schlichting

Co-hosted by Johns Hopkins University Press Wednesday, March 25, 2020 12:30 pm

Much like in Baltimore, the waterfront was the key to New York City’s growth and prosperity. Historian Kurt Schlichting (author of popular JHU Press books on Grand Central Station) returns to the Club to tell the story of Manhattan’s waterfront as an epic struggle between public and private control. Through the mid-19th century, private interests monopolized waterfront access (sparking battles among shipping companies, railroads, and ferry lines). Pub-lic control returned when struggling maritime industries abandoned the waterfront under pressure from air travel and container shipping. Today, Manhattan is almost com-

pletely surrounded by waterfront parkland, luxury housing, and tourist attractions. Join us for a wide-ranging discussion that will dazzle anyone who is fascinated by this transformation of New York (and the fate of Baltimore’s own waterfront).

Reservations required. Cost: $24.00 plus surcharge and sales tax. We will begin promptly at 12:30 pm with Lunch including Beverage and Dessert, followed by the Lecture.

ODYSSEY LUNCH AND LECTURE

WHAT MADE HIM BRAHMS: Lunch, Lecture, and Piano Recital Saturday, April 18, 2020 12:00 pm

Music historian Jan Swafford writes, in his biography of Johannes Brahms, that the Romantic composer’s work displays the counterpoint of Bach, the archi-tecture of Beethoven, and the gentle lyricism of Schubert. The first half of this program explores these three powerful antecentents. The second half showcases Brahms in his autumnal years, as he unites the threads of his most compelling influences in a richly textured fabric of music that is expressive, progressive, and visionary. Join pianist and Steinway artist Lura Johnson for this exploration of Brahms’ Klavierstucke, Op. 118.

Pianist, Lura Johnson is a Steinway Artist and the Second Prizewinner of the 2015 International Johannes Brahms Competition Chamber Music Division. Equally comfortable as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician, she is Principal Pianist of the Delaware Symphony and Guest Pianist for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2007.

Reservations required. Cost: $57.00. Lunch at noon, program from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

LUNCH & LECTURE FACES OF CIVIL WAR NURSES A book talk by Ronald S. Coddington

Co-hosted by Johns Hopkins University Press Thursday, April 23, 2020 12:30 pm

With rare archival images and biographical sketches, Ron Coddington has recreated the lives of Civil War soldiers and sailors in several acclaimed books from JHU Press.

In Faces of Civil War Nurses, he turns his attention to the experiences of 77 dauntless women who served as nurses and caregivers during the Civil War. Their personal narratives are as unique as fingerprints: each provides a distinct entry point into the larger social history of this brutal and bloody conflict and its aftermath. Many of these women took on path-breaking roles in health care, charitable societies, and the suffrage movement. Ron

returns to the Club for an engaging talk that will appeal to anyone with an interest in the Civil War, women’s history, nursing, or photography.

Reservations required. Cost: $24.00 plus surcharge and sales tax. We will begin promptly at 12:30 pm with Lunch including Beverage and Dessert, followed by the Lecture.
