It is with mixed thoughts and emotions that I write a last “pastor’s

page” for the Chimes newsletter. I’ve written about 200 over the past 18

years to encourage and/or challenge the church in its ministry and

mission. How effective I have been is an unanswerable question.

I have seen wonderful, amazing works of our Lord through his

people here at 1st Pres. I’ve also experienced frustration when things that

God began were left undone or unfulfilled.

Just a quick glance at Chimes articles give a beautiful array of

people, programs, and accomplishments of our church life together.

Special annual experiences of Christmas, Easter, and the Kirkin’ stand out

in my mind and heart. Choir concerts, all-church activities, Bible study

and prayer groups added so much to our people’s lives. Countless

sermons, children’s messages, Vacation Bible Schools, community service

projects all made this church an active, vibrant one.

For me, best of all were (and are) the relationships, the friendships,

the mutual support and care we shared in the midst of it all. As a pastor, I

was privileged to be invited into the lives of so many for the joy of

weddings, baptisms, and family celebrations as well as in times of grief

and loss, problems in life and faith. I count all of these as most precious.

As I retire from full-time pastoral work, I’m wondering how

anything can take the place of all of you, the people of 1st Presbyterian

Church. But I’m sure that God has plans for me and for you in the days to

come.

With love for each one of you

In the Lord Jesus Christ,

Pastor Mike

In 2016 David Butts wrote a book titled The Devil Goes to Church: Combating the Everyday Attacks of Satan. In this book he explores the ways in which Satan attacks the church. Paul warned about this in his letter to the Ephesians (6:12). “ For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Jesus himself, when he prayed for his disciples and for us in John 17, specifically prayed for our protection from Satan. Verse 15; “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”

In David Butts’ book he looks at the very real ways that the devil does come to church and attack. And one of the times Satan is especially likely to attack churches is when they are in transitions of leadership. The good news is that Satan uses the same tactics over and over again. The same Satan that tempted Jesus in the wilderness is the same Satan that will try to make our church fail. So if we are aware of what these tactics are, we can be on the lookout for Satan disrupting our church. The biggest danger is being unaware of what Satan is doing in our midst. C.S. Lewis wrote about this in the Screwtape Letters. In this book Satan’s character writes the following; “One of our great allies at present is the Church itself. Do not misunderstand me. I do not mean the Church as we see her spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners. That I confess, is a spectacle which makes our boldest tempters uneasy. But fortunately, it is quite invisible to these humans.”

Therefore, we need to be aware of the ways Satan will tempt our church. There are four primary ways Satan tries to weaken the church. They are 1. Doubt, 2. Deception, 3. Discouragement, and 4. Division. Doubt is the oldest of Satan’s tactics. He uses it with Eve in the Garden of Eden. And Satan still sows doubt today. Sometimes it is doubting the Bible being true. Sometimes it is doubting God will have the power to do something. Sometimes it is more personal, causing us to doubt that God really loves us or is there for us. All of these are areas where Satan can use doubt. The next one is deception. Jesus himself called Satan a liar. And one of the ways Satan lies to us is he convinces us that we are OK the way we are. We are fine. We don’t really need

to change or repent. If you think you have being a Christian all figured out and together, you are being lied to.

The third attack is discouragement. Hebrews 10:24-25 says “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” This passage points out the importance of not just meeting together, but encouraging one another. The moment we think being “a bit down” is just normal, we are giving in to the devil’s old ways. That is why it is so important to be encouraged by God’s Word and each other. Lastly, one of the most dangerous attacks from Satan in the church is division. Satan loves to divide us over Bible interpretation, how to do the sacraments, politics, social issues, or even choosing the new color to paint the classrooms. Beware of division! Francis Fragipane wrote “If there ever was a false doctrine that was so widespread, so accepted in the body of Christ, yet so contrary to the heart and teachings of Christ, it is the tradition of division within the Church.”

So as we enter a transition to a new pastor, let’s remember that we enter it together. Will there be times Satan tempts us with doubt and deception and discouragement and possible division? Absolutely. I can almost guarantee we will see all four of these show up in the coming year. We must meet regularly together, pray regularly together, care for each other. And continually seek God’s power and direction. Take the time to pray this prayer that David Butts offers in his book:

“Lord, I know how much You love Your Church. Because of that great love, help us to wake up and begin to understand the schemes of the enemy against Your people. Give us insight into the spiritual attacks against the Bride of Christ. Show us how to pray in a way that sets the devil to flight and brings the overcoming power of Your victory into our congregation, amen.”

Blessings, Pastor Chris

Summer Curriculum

This summer, we will continue to look at the

warnings of the Old Testament prophets. They

warned God’s people to turn away from the evil

things they were doing, but they also preached

hope. One day, a Savior would come who would

make everything sad untrue. Jesus’ death and

resurrection were foretold hundreds of years

before he was born! Take a look at the following

story from the Jesus Storybook Bible, by Sally Lloyd-Jones in preparation for our Summer Curriculum:

from PC(USA) congregations and their friends; rising 6th

grade — class of 2019 seniors.

What? Join us as we spend the day serving our neighbors

hunt. We’ll end up back at First Pres for more pizza than

you can handle, worship, and a rager of a dance party and

build-your-own ice cream sundae station.

When? This will just be a one day, all day event.

However, if you are coming from afar and need a place to

stay, FPC is able to host some folks who want to make a

weekend out of it. Crash at the church the night before, or

the night after (or both if you want to hang out and

worship with the FPC SLC congregation on Sunday!).

Cost? $10. Please make checks out to the Presbytery of

Utah. As always, if cost is an issue, reach out to Adam at

[email protected] for scholarship information.

On July 10-15, 22 students and adults will be heading up

for handicapped veterans, and working in their Re-Store.

We will be camping at a local KOA and have devotions

in the morning and evening. Please be in prayer as this

will be the first mission trip that we will be going on that

is only our group.

If you would like to volunteer for any student events,

service projects, or open your house to a bible study

please don’t hesitate to email or give me a call. Our

calendar of projects/events can be found on the bulletin

As you know Pastor Mike’s last

Sunday with us will be June 16th.

After that he leaves for a well-

deserved break on the Jersey

Shore. You may be asking “then

what?” Well, our interim search

committee is working hard to find

an interim pastor to work with us.

It is reasonable to hope that we will

have an interim here by the Fall, if

not sooner. Until then? Well, here

is a short summary of the plan for

the summer. I will preach about as

often as I normally do. The other

Sundays we will have some guest

preachers. I have already lined up

quite a few good ones! Session and

members are being asked to take on

additional responsibilities such as

planning outdoor worship,

planning and teaching adult

Sunday school, all-church activities

like the Bees game, hosting outside

groups that use the building, and

some of the house keeping around

the building. This will allow me to

keep up with pastoral care, staff,

session, deacons, worship planning,

etc. All of the usual ministries of

our church in the summer will

continue. We will still have

community outreach at Ronald

McDonald House and St. Vincent’s

DePaul every month. We will still

have weekly prayer groups and

Bible studies. We will still have a

full-time child development center.

The Youth will go on their mission

trip July10-15th. VBS will be here

July 29th-August 2nd. We will

enjoy some additional outdoor

worship services. In short, First

Pres will continue to be a great

place to worship God and serve. If

you would like to help us through

the summer in any way, please let

me know. I need all the help I can

get. And I will continue to enjoy

being your associate pastor.

Looking forward to a great

summer!

Pastor Chris

A MESSAGE FROM THE SESSION

DEAR FRIENDS,

Summer brings exciting adventures

for many of us. As a church

community we are embarking on a

collective adventure as well. As we

say bon voyage to Pastor Mike, we

also say hello to the future. The

excitement of what lies ahead of us

is truly in the hands of the Lord as

He unfolds His path for our church.

In this period of pastoral transition

the Session will focus on a few

important roles, including the

following:

⬧ Help to fill roles in our church

community to ensure that the

ministries of First Pres continue

without stretching the staff too

thin.

⬧ Determine the makeup of the

Interim Pastoral Committee and

the Pastor Nominating

Committee (PNC).

⬧ Be the “listening group” for the

congregation to share feedback,

express concerns, and stay up to

date.

Pastor Chris will remain as the

constant and unwavering

Associate Pastor that she is and

has been, but some of her roles

and responsibilities will adjust in

Retirement Celebrations for Pastor Mike

Sunday June 9th: Celebrate 18 years with Pastor Mike. There will be a fellowship time between

services from 10-11 am. Pastor Mike will be offered recognition during the worship services. After the

11:00 am service we will celebrate at the church picnic. Location, Lindsay Garden Park at the top of M

Street. Please bring a dish to share. First Pres will provide burgers and hot dogs.

Sunday, June 16th: Pastor Mikes last Sunday worship and sermon at 1st Pres.

this transition. Refer to her

supplemental letter for some of

the ways that we need church

members to serve. The

nominating committee, co-

chaired by Christine Gibbs and

Craig Britter from Session, is

reaching out to members to

assist with these tasks, and if you

feel called to support, let us

know. There is always more

need for volunteers, and no

special skills are required!

The Interim Pastoral Committee,

chaired by Doug Gould, is

working quickly and efficiently to

move forward in the process of

accepting applications,

conducting interviews, and

assessing prospective applicants.

Session hopes to have an Interim

Pastor in place in the near future

and will keep the congregation

informed as this moves closer to

fruition.

After an Interim Pastor is in

place, our congregation will

participate in a review of who we

are and what is important to us as

a church community, led by the

Interim Pastor. After this study,

the Session will determine the

structure of the Pastoral

Nominating Committee, or PNC,

and the members of it are elected

by the congregation. The PNC

will conduct the search,

interviews, and assessment for

the permanent head Pastor, with

guidance from the Interim Pastor.

It is important to note that this

entire process typically takes 1 to

2 years, and we will be providing

more information and details as

we approach different stages.

Session is also the “listening

group” in our church community.

Anyone can ask questions, raise

concerns and offer suggestions to

any member of Session at any

time. If a member would like to

be heard formally by the Session,

submit a request to the Clerk of

Session, Elizabeth Duszak, via e-

mail at

[email protected].

There is A LOT to accomplish in

this transition period and Session

needs good ideas and extra hands

from our church family to ensure

the best possible outcome for our

church and ministries. There will

be many ways to contribute in

this transition for our church

community. Everyone who would

like, will have an opportunity to

be involved in some way. Until

we talk again soon, eat well, sleep

long and pray often.

Very Respectfully Yours,

Session Elders (Christine Gibbs,

Craig Britter, Doug Gould,

Elizabeth Duszak, Jan Nixon,

Kambiz, Pezeshki, Karla Miller,

Cub Scout Pack 3034 has been very

busy over the last few months.

January Cub Scout Winter Camp

was a problem for most Cubs

Scouts because of the weather and

only three of the Cub Scouts were

able to make it up the canyon so we

rescheduled for February for those

who were not able to make it in

January.

Also in February, Pack 3034

participated in Scout Sunday

(February 10th) and had their

annual Blue and Gold Banquet.

Our big March activity was the

annual Pinewood Derby race with

first-place going to Gabe Baker,

second-place to Ezra Lubbers, and

tied for third place was Nash

Goodick and Xander Roper.

Cub Master Susan Bland receive

the “Silver Beaver” award, which is

the highest award you can receive

from the council for her many years

and dedication to the scouting

program.

April pack meeting included a show

put on by scales and tails, the show

included tarantulas, scorpions,

lizard, snakes, Turtles and several

other desert animals, some of the

scouts was able to hold some of the

creatures and had a great time at

the show, including some of the

parents.

Upcoming events include service

project for Memorial Day flagging

Salt Lake Cemetery on May 25 and

De-flagging Cemetery on May 30th.

June 11th will be the graduation for

the Cub Scouts to advance to the

next rank and on June 28th and

29th will be the summer camp for

the Cub Scouts.

SERVICE

OPPORTUNITIES

TROOP 34 Troop 34 is maintaining its 103 years of Scouting activities while

chartered with First Presbyterian Church.

The 33 Scouts have been working hard on merit badge and rank

advancement. All the hard work will be recognized on May 29th, with

the year-end Court of Honor at Lindsey Garden.

Two Scouts are actively working on their Eagle Rank service projects.

One has been diligently leading groups in

filling sand bags to thwart the rising

waters of Emigration Creek. The other is

organizing a project to update fading

house numbers painted on the curbs of

houses in the Avenues, so that first

responders have an easier time finding

locations of those in need of help.

Other service projects have been Scouting

for Food, crewing an aid station at the Salt

Lake City Marathon, the

upcoming placement of

American flags on the grave

markers of veterans buried

at Salt Lake City cemetery,

and the annual Memory

Grove cleanup.

Our Troop prides itself on

regular adventurous trips

to the outdoors. In April, a

large contingent traveled to

Escalante to hike through

the picturesque slot canyons.

In May, another group braved the cool spring

weather on an overnight fishing trip to

Strawberry Reservoir. Summer trips are

always the highlight of the year and this year

is no exception. For the fourth year in a row,

a large group will be traveling to the council

camp in the High Uintas. And we are all excited for the return of the

highly regarded multi-day trip on the Adventuress, a 133-foot working

research schooner based in the Puget Sound. Lastly, we are preparing

for our first 12-day backpacking itinerary to Philmont Scout Ranch in

2020.

The Troop meets during the school year every Wednesday at 7:00 pm in

the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian.

All who are interested can contact Scoutmaster

Brian Bevin at [email protected].

furnished by Pastor Mike

from his large collection.

There's plenty of room for additional guys who

enjoy a good breakfast and Christian fellowship/

discussion. It's a great way to start your day.

Thursday's Men's Group Study:

The Men's Group Study currently

meets every Tuesday afternoon

from 6:30-8:00 PM in the

Library at FPC. We are currently

finishing our discussion of the

Gospel of John. If you are

interested in joining us, contact Chuck Britter or

just show up. We will be discontinuing this Group

Study for the summer and restarting in September

2019.

Men's Activities:

We are looking at conducting several activities this

year which may include a Celebrity Dinner in the

fall, our 2nd "Hitting The Mark" at a local gun range

is being planned for in late June or July, a canyon

barbeque will be held in August, and others time

permitting and availability of help in planning and

conducting the events. If you would like to help out

planning our Men's Ministry Program for 2019 and

we are looking for a few good men, Please contact

Chuck Britter at 801-631-1911.

Men's Retreat: Living In Freedom

The Men's Retreat will be is being rescheduled for

this fall. It will be held again at Big Canyon Ranch

Christian Retreat Center in Wanship, Utah. We are

waiting to hear back from BCR on either September

13, 14 & 15 or October 11, 12 & 13. We will be

sharing the camp with another men's group. This

meaning that we would share meal times but not

meetings or recreation activities. We would have

separate meeting sites at the camp. If anyone is

interested in helping with planning the retreat

activities, please contact Chuck Britter at 801-631-

1911 or email at [email protected].

Flower Bed Volunteers:

We are looking to sign-up volunteers to maintain

sections of our flowerbeds at FPC this coming

season. These sections will be

small portions of the

existing flowerbeds

around the church.

Larger beds will be

divided into sections

so that care time

would not become

excessive. Each

volunteer would be

responsible for the planting,

fertilizing, weeding and general care of the selected

flowerbed. Many of the flowerbeds are already

planted and would require only weeding, trimming

and fertilizing on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. If

you are interested, we will be having a short meeting

following the 11:00AM service on June 16th in the

office area conference room. Contact Chuck Britter

if you are interested in helping out at 801-631-1911

or email at [email protected]
