Conference Overview Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. Despite concerted medical and public health efforts, disparities in breast cancer still prevail, especially for black and Hispanic women. Among minorities, breast cancer is more likely to be diagnosed at later stages of the disease, although their incidence of breast cancer is relatively low. These disparities are multifactorial, comprising genetic, sociocultural, and environmental variables. The resulting substandard quality of care for minority women poses numerous health and medical challenges. The purpose of this activity is to highlight the ongoing research programs and efforts (including community engagement programs) aimed at understanding the underlying causes of such disparities and devising innovative strategies to ultimately eliminate them. The goal of this activity is to explore gaps in the detection of breast cancer and methods for promoting equitable care in women. It seeks to provide a framework to coordinate health initiatives across the public health infrastructure and community system through prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. Conference Objectives Upon completion of this activity, attendees will have received information that should allow them to... Quantify disparities in breast cancer rates and treatment among minority women; List at least three specific reasons for these disparities; Propose ways for eliminating these disparities in the clinical setting; Evaluate the evidence-based research to develop and advocate for policies that reduce breast cancer disparities; and Establish a framework for ongoing dialogue and creation of partnerships to address disparities in health in all affected communities.
