No flashy, splashy signs announce the location of PBS NewsHour’s studios on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. There are no blow-up pictures of a smiling Jim Lehrer, no satellite trucks emblazoned with the show logo.

The boxy exterior is so bland that a news guest arriving in a cab may wonder if the driver has taken a very wrong turn. Taxis pull up at a

warehouse on a residential street of modest houses. But this is it, all right. And it fits. A low-profile home for the beating heart of PBS NewsHour.

I’m visiting the studios with my PBS Hawaii colleague, Susan Yim, at the invitation of NewsHour’s head of Education, Leah Clapman. She’s heard about our Hiki N -o statewide

student news network, set to launch in Febru-ary, and wants to know more.Inside, we find a newsroom puls-ing with quiet, directed energy.

It’s an open space with rows of desks, and reporters and editors working their phones and computers. A few people are conferring over computer screens.

And here’s Jim Lehrer, in short sleeves, walking briskly through the newsroom as

air time approaches. He’s in a hurry, but he takes the time to welcome the two visitors from PBS Hawaii. Next, we hear, “You’re from Hawaii?” It’s Kate Gardiner, formerly of the Molokai Times, who coor-dinates social media for the NewsHour. Kate is a young woman with the job of broadening the audience of this news program, whose average viewer is over 55. She reaches out to interest new viewers/users in the online version of the television show. At the other side of the room, News Summary Correspondent Hari Sreenivasan also has Hawaii con-nections and an online mission. parts of the world—at negligible cost. It’s online-only content. Hari tells us he still keeps in touch with several classmates from the islands who attended the University of Puget Sound with him in Washington State.Hari and his boss, NewsHour Executive Producer Linda Winslow, ask the scope of Hiki N -o and how it taps into the power of the Web. We also speak briefly with Senior Correspondents Margaret Warner, Judy Woodruff, and Jeffrey Brown.

Now it’s on to the Control Room to watch the live television newscast—with a director calling out camera moves, sometimes punctuating her commands by chopping the air with her hand.

As the journalists present their stories on air, I think of how NewsHour staffers have taken time to ask excellent questions of us, and they’ve shown real interest in what far-away PBS Hawaii is developing in student media. Certainly they could have spoken only of their own important national television reach, covering world issues of the day.

Afterward, Sue and I get together with staffers at a neighborhood restaurant. The conversation is all about discovery, seeking what comes next.

PBS NewsHour, with its brown-warehouse wrapper and matter-of-fact news delivery, isn’t flashy. It’s better than that. Instead, NewsHour offers a love of exploration, an understanding of people and systems, and the drive and intellect to bring viewers/users the best information possible.

The Tenth Inning

Thousands of bats, three home run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series BASEBALL. Now Burns and co-director Lynn Novick bring the series to the present with THE TENTH INNING.

THE TENTH INNING tells the tumultuous story of America’s national pastime from the early 1990s to the present day, introducing an unforgettable array of players, teams and fans, celebrating the game’s resilience and enduring appeal, and showcasing both extraordinary accomplishments — and devastating losses and disappointments.

The film highlights dramatic developments that transformed the game: the crippling 1994 strike that left many fans disillusioned with their heroes; the increasing dominance of Latino and Asian players who turned baseball into a truly international game; baseball’s skyrocketing profits, thanks to new stadiums, interleague play, and the wild card; the rise of a new Yankee Dynasty; the Red Sox’ historic World Series victory; the astonishing feats of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds; and the revelations about performance-enhancing drugs that cast a shadow on many of the era’s greatest stars and their accomplishments.

Combining extraordinary highlights, stunning still photographs, popular music of the period, and insightful commentary by players, managers, experts and fans, THE TENTH INNING interweaves the story of the national pastime with the story of America. In an age of globalization, deregulation and speculation, the film demonstrates that baseball has continued to be a mirror of the country — at its best and at its worst. The film also movingly shows that when America felt most threatened, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, baseball offered common ground, providing Americans with solace, distraction, and the hope that things could one day return to normal. The film will air 16 years after the original Emmy Award-winning, nine-part documen-tary series BASEBALL debuted in 1994 during the players’ strike. The original series was seen by more than 43 million viewers, making it the most-watched program in PBS history.

A number of familiar faces from the first nine installments of the series add their welcome perspectives on events of the last 15 years, including writers Roger Angell, John Thorn, George Will, Gerald Early and Doris Kearns Goodwin, and broadcaster Bob Costas. The film also features revealing in-terviews with Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, managers Felipe Alou and Joe Torre, players Pedro Martinez, Omar Vizquel and Ichiro Suzuki, broadcaster Keith Olbermann, writers Marcos Breton, Tom Verducci, Selena Roberts, Mike Barnicle and Howard Bryant, and other players, writers and fans from across the country, and overseas.

Fans of the series will be able to explore even more of THE TENTH INNING by watching online video (pbs.org/tenthinning); traveling with Ken Burns on an interactive Google map as he treks to ballparks around the country this summer; downloading lesson plans; and sharing their own baseball stories. Fans can also connect to Burns and Novick on Facebook (facebook.com/kenburnspbs) and Twitter (twitter.com/kenburnspbs) for behind-the-scenes footage.

PBS Hawaii PROGRAM LISTINGS September 2010

Moments before his death, Stevie Ray Vaughn talked to Robert M. Knight, legend-ary rock photographer, one last time. “If anything ever happens to me,” he said, “you’ll know me when you hear me.” In the wake of tragedy, Knight would remember those haunting words, as they fueled his unyielding passion to find the next great guitarist.

Knight has spent the last forty years capturing the im-ages of some of the biggest names in rock and roll, many of whom appear in the film, including Jeff Beck, Slash, Steve Vai, Santana, Billy Gibbons, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and more.

In his humble beginnings in Hawaii, where he was raised by strict, religious parents, Knight sought out the “cool” crowd, but was shunned for not being artistic enough. But as the classic outsider looking in, he launched

his improbable career in 1968 with a line-up of now legendary acts as his first three subjects: Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin.

Shedding a light on what he calls the “archetypes of rock and roll guitar players,” the photography of Robert Knight reveals his subjects in all manner of simple human and sonically superhuman endeavors. As he overcomes his self-doubt and fights to maintain his relevance, we become immersed in his own story of professional survival and

private redemption.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Chester brings us a wide-eyed, ear-popping experience that takes us behind the ropes, beyond the green room, through the eyes of a conflicted photographer turned rock n’ roll sage. With unexpected turns and transcen-dent performances, we are taken on a wild, joyous, and surprisingly touching ride.

Great (a city that he named not for himself, but for Saint Peter). St. Petersburg is a city of palaces, and Fleming and Hvorostovsky take in three of the most memorable, all of them on the water. First is the Winter Palace, also known as the Hermitage, built with one entire facade facing the Neva River. Next on the tour is the Yusupov Palace (the scene of Rasputin’s murder); and lastly, the Peterhof with its fantastic fountains on the Gulf of Finland. In each location, they sing arias and duets by Verdi and Tchaikovsky, as well as the Russian songs of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.9:30 The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition: A Surprise in Texas See sidebar, this page.11:00 Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox John Clark (HD)11:30 Leahey & Leahey (e)Cable OnlyMidnight Charlie Rose1:00 CARRIER Get Home-itis 2:00 NOVA Becoming Human “First Steps”

The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition: A Surprise in Texas

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1 | 9:30PM & SATURDAY, SEPT. 4 | 8PM

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has been called “the most prestigious classical piano contest in the world” by the Chicago Tribune and “the musical Olympics of the western world” by the Milwaukee Journal. PBS presents The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition: A Surprise in Texas, featuring the finalists vying for the 2009 competition’s coveted gold medal.

Twenty-nine of the world’s best young pianists hailing from fourteen countries converged in Fort Worth, Texas, in May

2009 for a once-in-a-lifetime chance at gold in the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Emmy Award®-winning director Peter Rosen followed these distinctive personalities during a rigorous three-week competition—through intense rehearsals, introspective moments, preconcert rituals and endearing celebrations. With performances of Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and other composers setting the impassioned tone, the result is an intricate view into the inner workings of the world’s most prestigious piano competition, and a heartwarming story that proves to be a momentous surprise in Texas.

Few dreamers have had more impact on the American city than Daniel Hudson Burnham. He built some of the first skyscrapers in the world; directed construction of the World’s Columbian Expo-sition that helped inspire the City Beautiful Movement in towns across America; and created urban plans for San Francisco, Washington, DC, Chicago, Cleveland and Manila and Baguio City in the Philippines all before the modern profession of urban planning existed. P.O.V. In The Matter of Cha Jung HeeTUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 | 10PMHer passport said she was Cha Jung Hee. She knew she was not. So began a 40-year deception for a Korean adoptee who came to the United States in 1966. Told to keep her true identity secret from her new American family, the eight-year-old girl quickly forgot she had ever been anyone else. But why had her identity been switched? And who was the real Cha Jung Hee? This is the search to find the answers, as acclaimed filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem (POV “First Person Plural,” 2000)*, returns to her native Korea to find her “double,” the mysterious girl whose place she took in America.

*Tuesday, September 14 at 9PMPictured: Deann Borshay Liem examines a photo of the girl she was supposed to be.

AMERICAN MASTERS Cachao: Uno MasMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 | 9PM

AMERICAN MASTERS takes a fascinating look at the Grammy-winning bassist Israel “Cachao” Lopez, who died in March 2008 in Coral Gables, Florida. The film is produced and narrated by friend and ardent fan, actor Andy Garcia, who helped reinvigorate Cachao’s career in the 1990s. A maestro of legendary status on the world stage, Cachao is considered one of the greatest Afro-Cuban musicians of all time. Together with his brother Orestes, he revolutionized the heart of Cuban music — first in the late 1930s, literally inventing the mambo. Their spontane-ous improvisations and innovations established the basis for, and the influence of, contemporary Latin jazz and salsa, rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues.
