Temple Beth El Cantor’s Message As summer arrives, some of us take the opportunity presented by some additional leisure time to catch up on reading we have meant to do. Sometimes folks are committed to reading, but don’t have any specific books in mind. In light of such a possibility, I am using my space to suggest a few books of Jewish content for your perusal. They range in age, tone and seriousness. If none of these grabs your attention, there are many others you might want to look into. The Promise by Chaim Potok This is the sequel to his first novel, The Chosen, which most people are familiar with. In The Promise, we find Danny and Reuven, the main characters of The Chosen, as young adults dealing with trying to make one’s mark in the world. Potok, ever the keen observer, portrays how the choices these characters make affect the dynamics within their families. It is one of the books that I keep on my headboard, so that I may occasionally reread favorite sections. The Joys of Yiddish, by Leo Rosten Known primarily as a novelist and screenwriter, Rosten proved himself to be a capable lexicographer with this effort. It is a thorough (although, of course, not totally comprehensive) introduction to Yiddish where most entries are illustrated by means of a joke. More than a few of the jokes have been referenced by other writers, ranging from Harlan Ellison to Neil Gaiman to John Updike. How else could you be expected to know that when one-upping someone complaining of their tsuris, you should tell them that you have gehokte tsuris? A Treasury of Jewish Folklore by Nathan Ausubel I consider this compendium nothing less than indispensable (my wife and I made a point of presenting a copy to each of our children). It is buffet-as-feast. Its stories, parables, jokes, legends and songs capture

the spectrum of Jewish sensibilities. I cannot count how many times I have quoted something from this book, not just in my capacity as a Cantor, but in my day-to-day life. An example:
Two old men sat silently over their glasses of tea for what might have been, or at any rate seemed, hours. At last, one spoke: “Oy veh!” The other said: “You’re telling me!”
The Grammar of God by Aviya Kushner This is by far the most recent entry on this list. Kushner grew up in a Hebrew-speaking household, assuming that every family spent dinner time discussing the ramifications of grammatical details in the Tanach. When she went to graduate school to study writing, her professor informed the class that they would be studying the King James version of the bible. Kushner, deeply knowledgeable about the Hebrew incarnation but unfamiliar with the English, was struck by the differences between the two. Some were as a result of inaccurate translation, and some were things that even a skilled translator could not have conveyed. Please do not think that this is a dry, scholastic tome. Kushner presents the texts she studies in Hebrew and multiple English translations, leavened with personal reflections. This is My God by Herman Wouk Wouk is an observant Orthodox Jew who, as of this writing, is still alive at the age of 103. He wrote gags for radio in the 1940’s, ultimately turning to novels. His first, The Caine Mutiny, based on his time in the US Navy, became a hit Broadway play and movie. He went on to write Winds of War as well as War and Remembrance, which were both made into successful TV mini-series. This Is My God is an introduction to Judaism. In fact, when non-Jews (or Jews, for that matter) ask me for a book to give them an overview of our faith, this is the one I typically
Page 3
recommend. Although Wouk has a definite point of view in terms of his Orthodoxy, he is profoundly even-handed in talking about the different expressions of Judaism. It quickly becomes evident that you are in the hands of someone who is both a knowledgeable guide and a skilled writer. There are more I could have listed, but I think this list will provide a mixture of edification and enjoyment. I wish all of you a summer of health, happiness and good reading. Cantor Socolof
Temple Beth El President’s Message On June 13th, we held our annual congregational meeting and I appreciate those members that put aside the time to attend. Thank you to Missy Kowalsky and Cecily Eidelhoch for serving on the board these past few years. The remaining board members remain the same and I thank them for caring about Temple Beth El. I would like to thank the lay leaders that have filled in on Shabbat while Cantor took some vacation time. A shout out to those congregants who will lead our Erev Shabbat summer services. Thank you for stepping up to the Bimah. Please check the schedule in this issue of the Temple Times and join us on Friday nights. The “future committee” will meet in the next few weeks to discuss the direction of Temple Beth El going forward. If you would like to participate, please let me know. The ritual committee will meet to organize the high holiday services. If you would like to partake in the Yom Kippur Torah readings, please contact Mundy to let her know. Cantor has prepared the portions on CD’s to help you study.

Temple Beth El Executive Director’s Message
Dear Friends, Summer is here, it is now time for our 2 month bulletin. We have had a busy year. We have shared services with temple Emanu-El, the Schwartz Kallah and Rabbi Waldman weekend were shared and enjoyed by members of both Temples. It was a great learning experience, very nostalgic. The title of the weekend was The Jewish Community of Utica from Start to Finish and was a great success. I’m sure we will continue to find interesting, meaningful subjects to share learn from and enjoy, as the years go on. Our Board did a great job, Temple is moving ahead, and our religious school is growing with happy students. We have had a Bat and Bar Mitzvah over the last 2 years with more to be held over the next few years. We are very happy to see Temple Beth El move forward.
The Temple Times
We look forward to another year after having a happy, relaxed summer. Please keep Temple in mind between lovely summer days, catching up on your reading. Let’s all revitalize for the coming year. Good days to all, Mundy

Spring Cleaning at
Temple Beth El Cemetery House of Israel Cemetery Shaarei Tefillah Cemetery
Mason Road Cemetery Jonathan Lodge Cemetery
It is time to think about cleaning headstones and footstones at our cemeteries. Last year we cut down trees, repaired some of the fencing (there is lots more to do), had stone work done at the front entrance, reset some stones that were tipping, and did extensive yard work beyond the usual mowing. In the past 3 years we have cleaned more than 200 headstones and footstones and what a difference it made. Our cemeteries are beginning to look so beautiful and well cared for. We are so proud of the effort that many families made to beautify their cemetery plots. However there are many more stones that need our tender loving care. The cost is very reasonable:
Headstones $50.00 Footstones $35.00
If you are planning to have your family plot cleaned send a note, send an email or give us a call and we will take care of the rest.
Perhaps you could even send a little extra and have a headstone or footstone cleaned for someone who has no family left to care for their
plot.
Future Planning Cemetery Plots
As many of you know we now own 5 cemeteries that we are responsible for. We do this to maintain the dignity and memories of our ancestors.
One of the results of this increase in responsibility is increased maintenance costs. In order to continue our policy of Perpetual Care we need to increase the cost of new graves and plots.
The new costs are as follows and apply to all Cemeteries owned by The Temple Beth El Cemetery Corporation.
Effective August 1, 2018
One Grave Plot - $600.00 Two Grave Plot - $1100.00 Four Grave Plot - $2000.00 Eight Grave Plot - $3800.00
In order to purchase a plot or grave in The Temple Beth El Cemetery, the purchaser must be a member in good standing of Temple Beth El.
If you are purchasing a new grave the deed will be issued after the full payment is made.
HELP US LOCATE FAMILY’S
If you know anyone who has family
buried in any of our cemeteries listed
above that have family members who
have gravestones in disrepair please ask
them to contact us or simply send us
their address and we will contact them.
This way when they come to visit their
loved ones they will be greeted with a
clean well maintained monument.
