At The HelmCommodore J.C. Moore

June is a busy month...the end of spring...the beginning of summer. Our beach

springs to life with children on summer break and adults wishing that they were

too. The Thursday night dingy races have begun, and we expect to see some

participation from the Gamecock Sailing Team this year.

Youth Sailing Camp had a fast paced and fun four sessions with approximately

fifty five juniors sailing. Some even came to two sessions. It was great to see

the change in both skill and confidence between day 1 and day 5. These are our future sailors for life. All of

our organizers and instructors (the Brothers, the De Harts, the Dommels, etc.) and our wonderful group of

folks that worked to make this happen deserve our heartfelt thanks. A job well done!

The U.S. Women’s Double – Handed Championship is upon us. US Sailing thinks that the club is a

good place to have important events. We will do what is required to fulfill this thought. We have what it

takes. If you can help, contact Robert

Key or Jan Jenrnigan.

Land parking continues to be a

problem. As we go forward, there

will be fines that will be enforced for

breaking the Land Parking Rules.

Please read and obey the rules.

Here’s to a great summer!

CSCA’s May 16th Fiesta like there is no Mañana. The Margaritas and Taco Bar were fantastic! Muchas Gracias to Kim Milling, Davis and Pat and Bill Freeman, Beth and Bill Mathias, Alison Van Cleef, Kris Kenline, Marybeth Mahrer, Mary and Henry Roe, Mark Alexander, Gary Hodo, Amber Parshall, Mike Lambert, and all who helped make the evening so much fun. A top of the sombrero to all! You didn’t’ have to know a word of Spanish to enjoy the great food, flowing margaritas, photo booth, and a piñata! These food-fun-nights are always so much fun. If you’re not in the habit of attending CSCA food-n-fun nights - try one and discover what you’re missing! CSC’s New Member Party on June 12th was a success too. It’s safe to say a good time was had by all. Kudos to Joan Leamy, Elizabeth Selkinghaus, Commodore JC, Vice Commodore Andrew, Carolyn Tupper, Debra Kelly, “Mommadore” Carla Moore, Marybeth Mahrer, Kris and Brion Kenline, Donna Rone, Bob

and Jackie Meyer, Jane Webb, Jayne Boyle and all who helped, from set-up to clean-up, make the event go off without a hitch. Hats off, also, to the longtime members who came out and welcomed and socialized with the new members. Special thanks Scott Leamy and George Selkinghaus their special “liquid” concoction and all who brought tasty wonderful food. By the way, Judith Williams brought a cake to celebrate her husband’s and son’s birthday. A very happy and tasty touch!

CSC has been busy this month with Thursday Night Dinghy Racing, Youth Sailing Camp, our New Member Party, and the upcoming the US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship June 25-30. CSCA is involved in a great deal of club activity because that’s what we do. Right now we’re asking for volunteers to help prepare meals throughout the Junior Women’s Doublehanded regatta. If you’re able to pitch in, even if only for a day, please let me know.

The first two weeks of the Thursday night dinghy races are in the books, and both days were blessed

with a nice breeze that made the racing fun and the spectators comfortable. There are eight weeks left in

the racing series, so get out and participate, or just join the gang on the porch. It is a fun place to be on

Thursday nights.

I had the pleasure of attending the certificate awards ceremony after the first week of our Youth

Sailing Camp. Watching the excitement and enthusiasm of these young sailors after a full week on the

water was uplifting. Seeing them work together to put up the boats at the end of the day illustrates just how

important our Youth Camps are in teaching not only sailing skills, but the value of teamwork.

The camp instructors and safety boat crews deserve our sincere gratitude for their efforts and

withstanding the heat of a Columbia summer for two weeks. A huge thank you goes to Mike Brothers, Ryan

Hargrave, Dick Dommel, Bob Beauregard, and everyone else who helped out. Of course, camp organizer

Maria DeHart has done another excellent job of making the event a success.

Topping off the month of June is the US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship. I find it

amazing that young women from all over the country will come to Lake Murray to sail for a week. We all

know what a jewel we have with both our lake and our club. Sharing that with 80 girls will be a lifelong

memory for both them and us.

I can’t wait to talk with the girls from Hawaii to get their perspective. Perhaps they can teach us the

hula. Get your grass skirts out.

Aloha!
