The Sports Page: ANew Look

We have heard comment'! and opinion from variou~ people regarding their desire to !ICC a more expanded sports section than is now being printed . There have also IJccn remarks that the sports pc~ge has sh runk in ~ite relati ve tu the rest of the paper. We feel a number of point!! tan be cleared up hy explaining why the spon ing news may ha ve appeared 10 suffer a decrease in magnitude.

The paper, as it now stands, is comparable in size to th usc of past years. In the past. however. a number of techniques were employed which used more space on the page, but which did not allow publication ot any more s t oric~ than arc now being printed. A decorative maca. head. page wide headline~ . advertisements and notices. arc a lew of the rcasous why more p.tgc space was needed before.

In keeping with the genera l rormat of the rest of tlw paper, we have tried to eliminate unnecessary and spaceconsuming tri via which contrilHttcd noth ing to the cur· rent sporting news. We purposely have reduced the sin· of the headlines, and have tried to avoid the usc ol .tdvcrtiscments and notices, whcrt• possible. on the sports page. feel ing that in no way were tiH.'~c of any contributory nature.

One phallc or the page which h.t<; been lacking ren•ntlr i!l photo wveragc of the v.u ious events. With the administration 's decision to reno\,tte Sanlonl Riley Commons. the photo-developing farilitics. loc:ued in the bascntCIIl. were left tcmporaril.y without .t home. Arr:wgcmcn t~ for a new darkroom should be coutplctcd b}' ucxt fa ll . so that the paper wi ll agaiu have the equipmenl available lor its usc.

But as far as the sporting p.lgc it~cll i conccmed, Wl' .1re printing the bcM co\el.\g'l' ol Te<:h ~port that we can provide. Though it may nut h.wt• the 'amc cm.ttionalism au:u:hcd to it ,,, "ith p.t~c-widt• headlines. we I eel nevcrthclc ·~ that the coverage is complete, since. with the cx<.c ption ol the Chell" Cluh.
