UPDATE ON ADVOCACY WORK
The SBIA published an open letter in the Vancouver Sun on October 29th outlining our concerns about the lack of consultation on the two proposed supervised injection service facilities in Strathcona and raising questions about how the other pillars of the four pillars drug strategy would be supported.
Subsequent to the letter, there was media coverage from Metro News, Roundhouse Radio, CKNW, CBC, AM730 and Daily Hive.
We have followed up this work with meetings with the City and are pleased that we have a number of improvements to be implemented in Strathcona including:
• A Strathcona Community Policing Centre
• Additional LED lighting for Oppenheimer Park
• Needle pick up and sweeps • Improved safety, security and
cleanliness and economic development opportunities for the DTES street market
Work will begin in January on implementation of these initiatives. Additionally, the SBIA will be meeting with the City later in the month to discuss further engineering improvements for the neighbourhood. More updates will be provided as they become available.
2017 IS SHAPING UP TO BE A VERY BUSY YEAR.
The City’s Renewal outreach will be concluding in January with the process going to Council for ratification in February.
The SBIA will be moving toward implementation of projects such as its advocacy work and co-hosting a community health dialogue on January 19, details of which can be found below. We will also be moving forward on the public art initiative following the November 28 workshop held at the Strathcona Beer Company, planning for year 4 of the Made In Strathcona campaign and working towards a transportation advocacy plan.
THE TEAM THAT BRING S YOU:
As always, the volunteer-based board of directors are working hard on behalf of members. At the most recent AGM in September 2016, we welcomed two new directors, Anu Kainth and Darryl Ray.
Anu is first generation born Canadian of Indian parents. She was raised in a business family and has lived in Vancouver her entire life. Currently, a self employed business consultant, Anu also manages properties in Strathcona, Gastown and Kitsilano.
Darryl is co-founder of the Butler Did It Catering Company. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the business, including marketing, sales, staffing and the coordination of the events.

HOLIDAY SOCIAL RECAP
THE HOLIDAY SOCIAL AT PAT’S PUB WAS A HUGE SUCCESS THIS YEAR.
Around 100 SBIA members and partners came out to enjoy some holiday cheer.
Attendees enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere created by Pat’s Pub, great beer from onsite Hastings Mill Brewing Company, yummy bites from Railtown Catering, and of course the great company of SBIA members and partners. It is safe to say we had the best prizes of any holiday party in town, generously donated by SBIA members. The grand prize quiz
tradition was back with a very difficult set of questions this year. Trumps Fine foods continued their lucky prize winning streak from previous years and did a sweep of the two grand prizes. Savoury Chef was the SBIA member winner of the Recycle In Strathcona gift certificate, and are excited to take advantage of some free recycling services. Thank you to all of our members and partners that came out to the holiday social this year, what an enjoyable time as always!
We would like to thank our vendors for the event Leona’s Florist, Pat’s Pub and Railtown Catering.
A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS FOR PROVIDING DOOR PRIZES FOR THE EVENT:
On behalf of all the staff and directors of the SBIA, thank you for your support and we look forward to continue working on your behalf!
