TATUM SURGICAL PROMISED POSITIVE CHANGES… AND WE ARE DELIVERING!
In the March issue of The Tatum Times, we promised that each newsletter in 2012 would be dedicated to a new concept that has been added to our repertoire. Due to Dr. Chuck Wylie’s perseverance and dedication to Tatum Surgical, we now have retrievable prosthetic options. Utilizing the 2.5 mm screw design from the original Unipost System this concept lends itself to the strength and stability our users have come to rely on. This system incorporates the lab friendly Tatum Transfers, Analogues, Non-indexing UCLA’s, and the strong retention screws. Please see page 3 for an example of this system using a hybrid denture.

AAID
and
Credentialing
The field of dentistry is vast and varied with all of the various disciplines within this great profession. Those of us who have chosen to be involved in the reconstructive and implant disciplines have accepted tremendous responsibility. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and its credentialing process are an unprecedented “Resource Oasis” for developing the skills and confidence to perform these life-changing procedures for our patients.
The AAID has two categories of credentialed membership, each of which require an examination.
“Associate Fellow,” the academy’s entry-level credential, is designed to determine whether a candidate displays a level of competence in both the surgical and the restorative phases of implant dentistry. Applicants for the two-part Associate Fellow examination must have completed at least 300 clock hours of advanced or continuing education in implant dentistry.
Part 1 is a written examination that includes 150 multiple-choice questions. These questions are about the basic sciences (anatomy, biomaterials, pharmacology and physiology), diagnostic examination (medical history and tests, dental history and oral examinations, radiology and diagnosis and treatment planning), implant prosthetics (biomaterials, biomechanics, components and techniques) and implant surgery (pre-surgical considerations, endosseous techniques, augmentations and membranes, postoperative and maintenance (root form implants and other modalities). Part 2 is an oral examination that includes five clinical scenarios and concludes with the candidate’s defense of the following three cases that he or she treated: a single tooth, an edentulous segment of two or more adjacent teeth and an edentulous arch. Each case must include the final restoration that has been in function for at least one year.

“Fellow,” is the second and more advanced level of AAID’s credentialed membership. This credential represents “mastery and expert level status,” not only within the academy but also in the entire field of implant dentistry. The examination candidate must demonstrate in-depth and advanced knowledge of all phases of dental implant care.
During the Fellow application process, applicants must document the following: at least 400 hours of education related to implant dentistry, i.e.: 100 more hours than that required for the Associate Fellowship; at least 50 arches of implant treatment. The candidates must also submit ten cases that meet the criteria specified in the Requirements for the Fellow Membership Examination. Then, they must prepare a written case report for three (3) of the “ten” cases that meet the following criteria: one (1) edentulous case with an implant-supported prosthesis for a patient with se-vere atrophy; one (1) unilateral (Kennedy Class II) or bilateral (Kennedy Class I) partially edentulous posterior maxilla case replaced with two (2) or more root-form implants without teeth between implants, and one (1) case of the candidate’s choice. The other seven cases are documented with radiographs.
During the oral examination, the Fellow candidates are tested about five clinical scenarios and defend the ten cases for which they provided both the surgical and prosthetic treatment. Fellow candidates must also meet the professional and lead-ership credentials requirement that includes presentations, publications, advanced education, and certifications related to implant dentistry and leadership roles in dental organizations.
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry is the sponsoring organization of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI), which it activated in 1989. This process provides board certification for the field of implant dentistry on par with the recognized dental specialty board within our profession. The Acad-emy’s vision in creating this board as well as the credentialed membership exami-nations that it began almost 60 years ago are indicative of its leadership in the field of implant dentistry.
