PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
What a busy couple of months our club has had!
In April we enjoyed a very pleasant monthly run to Keepit Dam. The weather was wonderful,
with the sun shimmering across the water providing the backdrop to a relaxed day.
We commenced May with the Quirindi Heritage Village Fair. The event was very well
supported and I thank our members who brought their cars along for the Saturday morning
parade. Also in May the annual Rotary Club Shannon’s Display was held at the TREC. Three
of our members displayed their cars- Michael Jeanes Rolls Royce; Greg & Margaret Campbell
Vanguard Ute; and Paul & Nerida Boyd Chevrolet Impala Convertible. Paul & Nerida were
awarded the Meguiars’ Trophy, which I’m sure you would all agree, is a very fitting
acknowledgement of the high standard of the restoration. Greg & Margaret stole the limelight,
in my opinion, for their Vanguard information stand. I think that Graeme Faulkner has been
finally upstaged. Now all that Greg needs is a pair of dangling dice. I wonder if you can buy
them in two shades of green?
Our May run was to Calala Cottage. The historic village provided a wonderful backdrop for us
to display our cars on National Motoring Heritage Day at the end of the two week National
Heritage Festival.
Our June Pie Run to Currabubula Hotel was also very well supported. The fixed price pie, chips
and gravy menu seems to work well for most. It enables us to keep the price down and to
receive quick service. The service and hospitality extended by Kath and her staff was very
welcoming. The Currabubula Hotel would like us to schedule two pie runs each year there.
As we hosted the annual North West Hub Rally of the June long weekend, it was decided that
this would take the place of our June run. Although the numbers were a little down on previous
years, it was none-the-less a very successful rally, enjoyed by all participants. A massive
thankyou is due to our Rally Convenor, Gwen Bridge. Without her leadership we would not
have had such a successful rally. Of course she was supported by a hard working committee of
Lionel Bridge, Michael Jeanes, Cliff & Phyliss Bird, Arthur & Kay Ramsey and Karen & Ian
Duprez. I’m not sure that I approve of the second chorus of the Saturday night sing-along,
although working my way through a Model A Ford, it certainly may have had an element of
truth to it!
On the sick list in the last month has been our club stalwart Beryl Casson. We certainly hope
that Beryl is able to join us again soon.

MAY 2017 RUN TO KEEPIT DAM
We always seem to start these
commentaries off with bulltwang about
the weather, and in this case it is fully
warranted. It was perfect for a picnic on
the foreshores of Lake Keepit. Warm with
some sun but not enough to get burnt, no
wind, no flies or mozzies. After a
blistering summer and some colder days
ahead, this was magic. Have a look at
these to prove it:

HORSE DRAWN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT
MANILLA ON 30 APRIL 2017
We accepted Tamworth Regional Horse
Drawn Clubs invitation to attend their
championships at Manilla which was very
interesting. Unlike old cars which can sit
around idle for days, weeks or months,
horses need to be fed every day and also
trained on a regular basis. This, together
with the immaculate way the buggies are
presented, requires immense dedication.

Attending were: Alan & Maree – Dodge,
Greg & Margeret - Vanguard Ute, Brian
& Phillip – Morris Minor, and Peter in the

Oh what a lovely day for a picnic

MAY PIE RUN TO KOOTINGAL
The venue was the Yellow Café who
provided 3 set menus at quite modest
prices. The pies came with heaps of veges
and jugs of gravy, and they all slid down
very well.
The larger eaters, aka gutsers, had no
sooner finished their meal and were
looking around for dessert, so out came
the home-made sweets. All very nice, as
was the congenial company and beautiful
sunny warm weather.

Also attending were: Carl & Beryl – Holden,

Michael in the Jag.
QUIRINDI RURAL HERITAGE RALLY
6 MAY 2017
This was our Clubs 3rd
run this week
following the Manilla Horse Drawn
Championships and a Pie Run to
Kootingal. All provided a diverse range of
entertainment and enjoyment. This was
the day of tractors and trucks and
stationery engines, and a range of cars
supplemented the heavy stuff.
After the street procession the rural
museum area provided a good opportunity
to show off our new windscreen banners
so here are some individual and group
photos:

Cliff & Phyllis’ Chrysler
Note how good the new club windscreen
banners look – a great initiative

Plenty of tractors, trucks, small engines
and stalls of every variety
Additional entertainment included a band,
sheep shearing, blacksmith
demonstration, miniature railway rides
and tractor pull.

21st May
National Motoring Heritage Day –
Shannons at TRECC
Three TVCC members exhibited at this
event; Paul & Nerida Boyd with their
newly restored 1958 Chevrolet Impala
Convertible, which won the prestigious
Maguires Trophy.
The Boyd’s 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
Greg and Margaret Campbell also
displayed their recently completed 1957
Vanguard utility (and its equally
outstanding information board – they
truly do have a talented son in Andrew,
who was involved in both projects)
The Campbell’s 1957 Vanguard Utility and
Information board
Michael Jeanes displayed his 1969 Rolls-Royce
which had the distinction of being parked next to
the Shannons Choice, Peter and Kate Colwell’s
1961 Rover 110.
Michael Jeanes’ 1969 Rolls-Royce (and Pommy
friend)
This was a most enjoyable event and by
all accounts the most successful one yet.
21st May
National Motoring Heritage Day –
Calal Cottage
As well as the Shannons Show at TRECC
the club’s principal display was at Calala
Cottage, in conjunction with the National
Trust Heritage celebrations.
A number of the older cars were
displayed within the grounds, with the
later models parked out the front.

Some of the older cars, including a rare
outing for Max Russell’s Whippet
Calala Cottage and its environs are a
delight for the history enthusiast and are
kept in wonderful condition by the active
group of volunteers. The site was open to
the public and the TVCC provided a
sausage sizzle for the members and
public.
Cars and a sausage sizzle – what could
be better?

good company, plenty of local history and

The British Are Coming! And looking
good!
1st June Pie run to the
Currabubula Hotel After a -3deg morning it turned out to be
a lovely sunny day for a run to the
popular Currabubula Hotel for a pie, chips
and gravy lunch (although some chose
from the regular menu) which was
arranged for us by Michael Crawley.
Jockeying for position in the dining area
Not only did Kath and her staff provide
this value lunch option ($10) but we were
also seated in the welcome warmth of a
private room. Kath has said that she
Page | 11
would be happy to have the club attend at
least twice a year, suggesting a $12
hamburger and chips for next time –
yummo.

Feature Article
As a school boy, long time member
Michael Crawley attended St Stanislaus
College in Bathurst. As it was impractical
for Michael to travel back to Tamworth
for the Easter holidays Michael was able
to attend the races at Mt Panorama. As a
car mad boy (which he still is) with a
particular interest in racing, this was a
worthwhile sacrifice.
Armed with his trusty camera, a gift from
his mother, he was able to take photos of
famous cars and racing identities. These
photos are a rare glimpse into racing at
the time. A selection of these photos has
been chosen for exhibition at the Mt
Panorama Museum – an indication not
only of the historic value but also of the
keen eye and skill of this junior
photographer.
