Peter writes about being on the Mount of Transfiguration as he, James, and John were privileged to have a special vision of the Lord Jesus Christ. He states: “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to Him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,’ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with Him on the holy mountain” (2 Peter 1:16b–18). Today, through the words of Scripture, we, too, become eyewitnesses and are given a glimpse of glory in the vision of our transfigured Lord! WELCOME We’re glad you’re here! All in attendance in the sanctuary are asked to please complete the Connect card located in the pew rack and drop it in the offering plate. Also, please read the statement concerning the reception of the Lord’s Supper found on the Worship card. Prayer cards will be picked up by a volunteer during the sermon hymn.

AS WE GATHER There is nothing quite like being an eyewitness, giving a special perspective to share on the event.

WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN “Beautiful Savior” LSB 537

Tune and text: Public domain

PREPARATION (please stand) INVOCATION ☩ The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us

from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on the Word of God and our sinful condition.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned

against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as

Page 3: the T R A N SF I G U R A T I ON o f O U R L OR D F e b r u

ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

SERVICE of the WORD  PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray.

O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen. (please be seated)

OLD TESTAMENT Exodus 34:29–35 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai,

with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount

Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

Whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 3:12–13; 4:1–6 Since we have such a hope, we are very

bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. . . .

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend

Page 4: the T R A N SF I G U R A T I ON o f O U R L OR D F e b r u

ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ

as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

COMMON ALLELUIA AND VERSE (please stand) John 6:68

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:2–9

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And

a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Page 5: the T R A N SF I G U R A T I ON o f O U R L OR D F e b r u

was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ☩ everlasting. Amen. (please be seated)

During the SERMON HYMN, you may submit prayer requests. Those present may fill out a Prayer card. Those worshiping online may post in the chat PRAYER REQUEST in all capital letters, followed by your request. Our volunteers will gather them to be offered up during the Prayer of the Church.

OFFERING Please place your offering in the plate as you leave at the conclusion of worship or as you come forward for communion.

OFFERTORY Psalm 116:12–13, 17–19

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (please stand) P In peace, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

P For the baptized, that we would heed our heavenly Father’s admonition to listen to His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, as He speaks to us through His Holy Word and Sacraments; and that we would, by grace through faith, behold Him in His glory as He continues to tabernacle among us, delivering forgiveness, life and salvation through the same, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P For those who are called and ordained to serve in Christ’s stead and by His command, that all their preaching and teaching would flow from the right understanding that all Holy Scripture testifies of Christ and all that He has done, and continues to do, for our eternal salvation, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

Page 7: the T R A N SF I G U R A T I ON o f O U R L OR D F e b r u

P For parents in every Christian home, that they would pass on the faith to their children by word and deed, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P For all those who have been placed in authority over us, that they would serve with integrity and honor, having the welfare of all in mind; and for our country, that division, conflict and strife would give way to unity, peace and quietness, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P For the Lord’s flock here at St. Paul Lutheran Church, that we would be granted faithfulness, humility and patience in our various vocations, striving to love God and neighbor in all that we say and do, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P For all those who are sick, hospitalized, recovering, enduring ongoing treatment or suffering in any way, [especially

_______,] that they would know Your peace and receive healing and relief according to Your gracious will; and for those who mourn, [especially _______,] that they would be comforted by the sure and certain hope of the resurrection, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P For those who come to the holy altar this day to the Holy Communion of Christ’s true body and blood, that receiving the forgiveness of sins, they would be strengthened in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

P All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through Him, with Him and in Him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is Yours, forever and ever.

C Amen.

9:00AM - BENEDICTION P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to

you. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. C Amen. P Go in peace and serve the Lord.
