Almost 500 people attended the Voorhees branch celebration, which was held on June 23rd. The event featured food, face painters, a balloon artist, a magician, and a juggler. The Merchantville staff welcomed Colette Boogie and her traveling petting zoo to their kick-off party on June 14th. Haddon Township welcomed over 175 people to their party featuring a petting zoo, a balloon artist, and temporary tattoos. Over 250 Gloucester Township residents enjoyed a puppet show presented by the Lakeland Fire Department, a balloon artist, face painting and ice cream courtesy of Friendly’s. The South County Branch celebrated with Miss Collette’s Amazing Animal Show, which featured a motorcycle riding parrot. Sam Spino from Camden County’s Traffic Safety Department raffled off tickets to the RiverSharks. Crafts, games, food and drinks, provided by the Berlin ShopRite and the Atco Murphy’s, were enjoyed by 228 attendees. When I worked as a reference librarian at the Voorhees branch ten years ago, Sept- ember signaled the beginning of the homework assignment season. We anticipated the same homework questions at various times of year and kept clipping files and books in preparation for students’ questions. While September still heralds the start of another busy homework season, a lot has changed in the past ten years! Although the questions are often the same, the resources that we have to offer are very different. Our website provides 24/7 access to a large variety of online databases. These resources offer full text magazine, newspaper and journal articles, literary criticisms, critical information on hot topics and current issues, and a multitude of encyclopedias and reference sources for many different subject areas. Students can still continue to count on the personal assistance of our staff. The girls with their instructors, Jeanne Sevast and Andrea Cline, proudly model their creations!

Be a Fashionista Program...A Huge Success at Voorhees! As a team effort, the Children's and Adult Services

departments designed a sewing program fortweens and their moms. Andrea Cline in the

Children’s Department and Jeanne Sevast of Adult Services decided to guide pre-teen girls in their first sewing experience.

The project was to create and hand-sew a summer dress from materialthe library supplied. The excitement from the girls was so infectious that itwas decided to have a fashion show to display each girl’s creation.

As a result of this first time experience, there will be more sewing programs like this. Our next sewing adventure will be working with jeans.Using old jeans, we will be sewing a book cover and a lunch bag. You supply an old pair of jeans, we’ll supply the rest!

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, andnow live just outside the city with my wife. Iattended the University of Texas, where I stud-ied English, but I really learned to write as anadvertising copywriter, a career I began while a sophomore in college. I never planned to be a writer; I more or less stumbled into it. Glad I did, because I have no other marketable skills!

I was always a big reader, as is true of most writers, almost strictly fiction. I remember, back in grade school, there was some sort of program in which we could orderbooks and have them delivered to the school. My momnever put a limit on the number of books she’d allow meto order. The more, the better, she seemed to think. Icouldn’t wait for those books to arrive, and I can stillremember how the boxes of fresh books smelled. I probably waited for those books with the same sense of anticipation thattoday’s kids wait for the latest video game. Then I’d read them in a matter of days and have to wait for the next go-round.

We lived a good distance from the library, but we still drove in regularly.Getting my first library card was a big thrill. I remember thinking, “They’lljust let me borrow whatever I want? Really?” What a great concept. At eightor nine years old, I was reading Encyclopedia Brown (an early start on crime fiction, I guess), then the Hardy Boys, then some classics like Old Yeller andCall of the Wild. I loved Mark Twain, too.

Libraries, by their nature, place reading above everything else. They makeyou realize how important reading and writing are. This sounds corny, but eventoday, when I visit the library, all I can think about is how much potential iscontained within these walls—great stories that can take you around the world,to different times, or introduce you to fascinating characters. Without libraries,it’s entirely possible I never would’ve fallen in love with reading, and subse-quently with writing. Of course, I still read a lot, and a good percentage of thebooks I read come from libraries. I carry two library cards in my wallet, and

only one picture of my dog, so you can see that I have mypriorities straight.

Libraries also play a role in helping to spread mywork to a broader readership. Libraries, and Friends of theLibrary groups, are amazingly supportive of writers. I speakto these groups frequently, and attend library conventions, and I meet a lot of new readers this way. Many of these people, by the way, don’t have access to the mega-book-

stores, or they simply prefer libraries (which are understandable), so I’m reach-ing some people I’d never meet at a chain bookstore. There’s always a sense ofcommunity within a library, and that appeals to me as an author.
