The REIPPPP is expanding into a world leading programme, with South Africa already exceeding the USA in the percentage of renewables in the grid. 2% may not seem like a lot, but this has been achieved in just 5 years, with the graph about to bend upwards as more and more projects connect. Add to this the diversity of technologies being rolled out: Solar, wind, CSP, co-generation, bio gas, hydro, gas, and geothermal projects are connected, under construction, or on the planning table. Renewable energy production for own use is the next wave. Listed property portfolios, large energy users, warehousing businesses, and households alike are scrambling to make sense of the economics of on-site generation. Led by roof top solar technologies, these developments are at the forefront of developing whole new markets for products and business models being invented as you read this. Energy Efficiency has become the norm in South Africa. For the most part new buildings, industrial plants, and mechanical devices are being produced as efficiently as is economically possible giving rise to a significant industry of professionals, manufacturers, importers, and installers. This supported by a mature measurement and monitoring sector merging fast with electronics and telecommunications businesses to create a new integrated smart energy sector.
