EIT RawMaterialsLighthouse on

Raw Materials and Circular Societies

(societal challenge)

Optimize the efficient discovery, characterization, processing and flow of materials across the environment to move towards ‘zero waste’, a core

target of circular economy

Circular Societies

3

Strategic Actions

• Initiate and strengthen collaboration with Industrial associations (e.g., Sustainable Process Industry through Resource andEnergy Efficiency (SPIRE), Factories of the Future (FoF)) on Circular Economy

• Initiate contacts with European Cities associations to define possible ways of collaboration; facilitate synergy workshop series.Strengthen the existing collaboration with the European Commission (DG Grow (including the Executive Agency for SMEs -EASME), DG Environment, DG RTD, DG Regio) on Circular Cities. Organise an Impact Assessment workshop bringing togetherprojects from Horizon 2020 and EIT regarding Circular Cities

• Integrate existing and new databases on Circular Economy in the RM InfoCenter

• Create a cross-KIC working group on Circular Cities for a possible joint call

• Advisory Board to support EIT RawMaterials in discussion groups, policy groups, working groups

Operational Actions

• Networking activities within the KIC to identify complementarities and facilitate the creation of large consortia; identify gapsand develop and implement strategies to fill them

• Specific Start-Up booster call on Circular Business models (e.g., repair, reuse, products to services)

• Lighthouse topics across the value chain included in the next KAVA call

Raw Materials and Circular Societies Lighthouse implementation

4

Raw Materials and Circular Societies Lighthouse – KAVA topics

1. Demonstration of modelling tools to ensure economic and

environmental relevance of products’ circularity

2. Demonstration of data gathering/material flow analysis tools

3. Demonstration of new design approaches for circularity

4. Demonstration of technological and non-technological solutions

to support Industrial Symbiosis (materials and water), including

tailings valorization

5. Recycling of end-of-life consumer products (including collection,

pre-treatment and recovery technologies)

SUPRIM (Upscaling)

SUstainable Management of PRIMary Raw Materials through a better approach in Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment

• Why: Reliable datasets and adequate assessment methodologies are required to assure and assess the sustainability of raw materials’ supply.

• Theme: Circular Economy

• Duration: 2017-2019• Partners: 8 partners

• Ghent University (lead); Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation; Tecnalia Ventures; Boliden Mineral AB; Cobre las Cruces, S.A.; EUROMINES; Leiden University; Lulea university of Technology.

SUPRIM will provide unique value and method to strengthen the role of the primary raw materials sector in the broader society, e.g., academia (students better familiar with the sector and well-trained in the subject), the sustainability assessment and LCA community (improved sustainability impact models; improved data sets) and policymakers (better policy supporting information)

SUPRIM

To develop an efficient, objective and robust assessment tool to meet the societal demands of sustainable resource use and to enhance the image of the (European) Primary Production Sector (and consequently of other economic sectors). Specific added-values include:

a. SUPRIM targets the issue of ‘Resource Depletion’ (or Scarcity or Availability or other associated terminology) for metals and minerals, an important yet hotly debated issue within the LCA community, mining sector and the geoscience community. SUPRIM will promote an open discussion with different stakeholders to identify and agree on a (few) problem definition(s) and create a more harmonized LCIA method for resource use. Thus, it will deliver a new LCIA-method will be state-of-art and the most reliable of its kind thanks to a unique consortium with top expertise.

b. SUPRIM is the first critical step to understand: (1) How to approach mining companies and mining sites (local management), e.g., which social, cultural and other (soft) skills are needed? (2) What are the challenges and roadblocks, and how to deal with them? (3) What is the technical expertise needed

c. The SUPRIM team will build an extensive data collection method, including a tool or roadmap. SUPRIM will thus develop a unique data collection expertise, a major competitive advantage for European stakeholders. On top of that, mining companies welcome a cost-efficient solution to retrieve environmental data from their activities in function of environmental assessment of their products through LCA, anticipating a growing interest from downstream users and final users and consumers

Stupid questions from an volcanologist

Where do you start and stop LCIAs – cradle to grave, material, product?

NZ Ministry for the Environmenthttps://www.mfe.govt.nz/waste/circular-economy

Stupid questions by an educated volcanologist

Inequality? Security? Poverty? Conflict?

Who?

and who sets the rules of the game?

What for? What do we want to reduce?

Water, energy, mass of material, CO2 emissions?

presented by S. Bringezu, UniKassel

When, and over what timeframe?

THANK YOU!
