Proposed hotel purchase prompts oppositionneighborhoods and schools, the Austin City Coun-cil’s proposed action also prompted protest from area residents and business lead-ers.

“We’re not just objecting to the Candlewood. We’re going to give the city a better plan,” said Rupal Chaudhari CFO for the two hotels that share parking and a street entrance with the Candlewood.

the $9.5 million. Community First Village

is a 51-acre master planned community on Hog Eye Road in northeast Austin near the Travis County Ex-position Center. The com-munity provides affordable, permanent housing for peo-ple coming out of chronic homelessness.

City of Austin staff said the Candlewood hotel will become permanent, sup-portive housing for disabled homeless. Staff indicated the project will have case managers, a food pantry, a laundry, an exercise room and a desk clerk at night for security. Those to be housed will sign leases, pay

reduced rent and be held ac-countable to the terms.

The proposed homeless residence project near Pe-can Park “will have a big impact on businesses, res-idences, and schools,” Wil-liamson County resident Yalin Wang told commis-sioners at the court’s Feb. 2 meeting.

Mr. Wang and Bianca Ro-driguez said tent encamp-ments and squatters have been in nearby vacant lots for months. They said resi-dents in that neighborhood have experienced squat-ters conduct home and car break-ins as well as leaving rubbish, excrement and drug paraphernalia in the

streets and yards.At the same time, there is

support for Austin’s efforts to provide housing to the unsheltered.

Austinite Christopher D’Urso said the accusations of crime, drugs and prosti-tution among the homeless “is the worst scapegoating imaginable.”

The Candlewood Suites, where the City of Austin wants to house homeless citizens, sits next to Freda’s Seafood Grille and shares parking with two other hotels. Single-family housing neighborhoods, schools and an eight-lane highway are also within a mile.
