“Jesus stood up and exclaimed; ‘Let anyone who thirsts come to Me and drink. As Scripture says: Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in Me.’ He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe were to receive.”

The great event in Jerusalem, marked by wind, noise and fire, was a moment of fulfillment and at the same time of beginning for the life of the church. The signs and wonders of Pentecost are so familiar surrounding the radical change which took place in the upper room. Jesus speaks to us today, leading me to ask myself: Do I thirst for the Lord? When we are thirsty we long for a drink, for refreshment, to be renewed. The reading from John, who always speaks about belief and believers, reminds me to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’ in the events of my daily life. I am thirsty for the Lord, yes or no. The Spirit is part of my family life, of my home and work. The Spirit leads and guides me, but only if I ask and give in. Speaking of thirst, remember the words on the lips of Jesus at Calvary, ‘I thirst’. He thirsts still for you and for your Spirit filled life.

A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy;

Act in me O Holy Spirit that my works, too,

may be holy;

Draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I love

but what is holy;

Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend

that is holy;

Guard me then O Holy Spirit

that I always may be holy.

Amen.

MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH: Pope Francis recently added a Memorial for “The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church” to the General Roman Calendar. It will be celebrated each year on the Monday after Pentecost. This year that will fall on May 21. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Divine Worship has now posted in-formation on the USCCB website about the readings and orations for Mass. It also provides information about the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours on this new Memorial. The new Memorial supersedes the rubric at the end of the Pentecost Mass that suggests that a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost. Please note that the readings will be proper to the day, not optional. They are slightly different than what is in the Lectionary for Mass (Lectionary Number 1002- I). The Secretariat has produced a PDF of the readings which may be found at the above link.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE Inside the main doors of St. John Bosco Church is a bulletin board dedicated to those Men and Women currently serving in the Armed Forces. It needs to be updated. If you have a son/daughter, grandson/daughter or member of your family currently serving anywhere in the world in the United states Military (Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard) please send us a picture, his/her name, branch of service and where they are currently serving. We would like to update our board and to occasionally announce their names in the bulletin asking for continued prayers for those who serve and protect the freedom that we enjoy as Americans. Perhaps we could change the board three times a year (focusing on those currently serving, those who are veterans and those who have died serving our country). ALSO, IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO ORGANIZE THIS BOARD PLEASE LET FR. RIC KNOW, 570-788-1997, Ext 3 or 4.

From Faith Formation . . .

May 19-20, 2018

Dear Parishioners,

The 2017-2018 Faith Formation year is in the books, and we couldn't be happier with all of the faith filled experiences that we have been able to enjoy with the young people of our parish this year. Before long, the school year will be winding down as well, and family vacations will begin for many. It is especially important during these summer months to continue to model our faith as parents to our children by not only continuing to attend weekly mass here at St. John Bosco or elsewhere in our community, but also when we travel on vacation as well. This is not always easy to do, especially when days and nights on vacation are action packed! It is, however, a great opportunity to not only pause and thank God for the gift of a family vacation, but also to check out what goes on in other parishes and churches! Sure, mass will be the same; you'll have readings, a gospel, a homily, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, but each church and parish has features that differ and are unique. Some of these features are aesthetic, and some are the ways that the songs, ministries, and other aspects of the church reflect the parish community.

Growing up, whenever we went on vacation, the first thing that my mother did was to look up the closest Catholic church. I remember feeling a little weird going to a church that wasn't "my own", but often enjoyed looking around and noticing what was different and what was the

same. As I got older (most likely the teen years), I am fairly certain that I did a lot of eye rolling when it came time to find the Catholic church, and wondering why we had to stop our vacation to do something that we always do at home. It was during this time that we were at Disney World, and the Catholic mass that my mother was able to find was held in the Polynesian Village Resort. I remember standing at mass, surrounded by tiki torches and palm trees and thinking that this wasn't so bad! Looking back, I am grateful that my family made sure that we had these experiences.

Just because school is out or we are on vacation, church and mass are still there. God doesn’t take a vacation, so why should we take a vacation from God? While there are certainly many wonderful ways to "be the face of Christ" outside of the walls of the church, I encourage all families to make that time this summer, whether on vacation or in your own backyard, to keep coming to mass and celebrating all that God has given. When you do explore those vacation churches, be sure to bring back a bulletin and a postcard, so that we may share them on our "Summer Faith Adventures" bulletin board in the Faith Formation hallway. You never know . . . your experience may help another family to find a church to attend on their own vacation this summer! Happy travels to all!

May God bless you and your families,

Carla Bednar Director, Youth Faith Formation

CROSS CATHOLIC OUTREACH The following note was received from Fr. Dennis Rausch, an Outreach Priest, who visited our parish the weekend of April 7-8 and offered coverage for Mass, Confession and Emergency sick calls while I was on the required Convocation of Diocesan Priests.

Thank you, Father Richard, for inviting Cross Catholic Outreach to your parish. I had a wonderful experience that week and was very happy to help you out and would be again.

You will be receiving a financial statement from the office in a few weeks letting you know the total offering that was donated.

It was also great having a couple of meals and relaxing together.

Thank you also for your very generous personal donation for the days I was covering the parish.

May you and your parishioners continue to walk in the footprints of Jesus.

GOOD NEWS UPDATE This is to inform you of a change in the 2019 schedule at Sight & Sound Theater in Lancaster. The response to “Jesus” this year has been overwhelming!!! Because of this they are thrilled to share that they are extending the show into 2019. This replaces their original plan to run “Noah” next year. While they were excited for “Noah” to return to the stage, they are passionate about the message of “Jesus” returning in 2019.

The GOOD NEWS is that we will be sponsoring another bus trip to see “Jesus”. This will be on Friday, April 26, 2019. Please make your reservations early by calling Marie Guza at (570) 455-3874. It is an awesome production, the best that we have seen yet at Sight & Sound Theater. We look forward to all that next year has to offer!!!

THE "TRAVELING VOCATION CHALICE" We received the following note from a St. John Bosco parishioner on the spiritual blessing received by hosting the Vocation Chalice in their home.

Dear Father Ric and Deacon Maurice,

Thank you so much for letting me share the Vocation Chalice in my home. It truly was such a rewarding experience. I placed the chalice next to my "Blessed Mother." It was so easy to ask Our Lord to encourage both men and women to search and follow God's call in their lives. I will continue to pray that God will hear my prayers. Thank you so much "for six days of Heaven.”

Marie Cook

We encourage you to pray for Church Vocations to the Priesthood, Religious Life and Diaconate. It is very simple to host the Traveling Chalice.

1. Sign up for the week that you desire. Call the Office: 570-788-1997, Ext. 3 2. Pick up the Chalice and Prayer Cards at weekend Mass. 3. Place in a prominent place in your home. 4. Offer a prayer for Church Vocations each day. (Samples are included in the kit) 5. Return Chalice and kit on the following weekend in the sacristy.

I know that you will find hosting the Chalice and praying for vocations to be a spiritual blessing. The Church is in need of faithful men and women to serve God's people. Pray that they might be quiet enough to hear and discern God's call and have the spiritual courage to respond.

We are in need of individuals and/or families to host the Traveling Chalice on the following weeks: May 27; all weeks in June, July and August.
