We at the Varsity Shop are the most experienced retailer in Oxford having been selling gowns for over 168 years. We can help you with all matters relating to college ‘life’ whether its caps and gowns or college attire, we do it all!

Sub-Fusc is instructed as follows; a dark suit with dark socks or a dark skirt with black stockings or trousers with dark socks and an optional dark coat or jacket. Black shoes, plain white collared shirt or blouse, a black long tie, a black or white bow tie, or a black ribbon tie. All dress should be as might be worn for formal occasions. Any candidates serving in the HM Forces are permitted to wear uniform together with the appropriate gown. The uniform cap is worn in the street but carried indoors.

Your academic dress requirements will be: Both postgraduates and undergraduates are required to wear their appropriate cap and gown in the prescence of the; Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and other officers of the University in their official capacity, at; Matriculation, Examinations and formal college events. In addition, Sub-Fusc must be worn under the gown at all of the events mentioned above.

Wearing of Mortar Boards and Soft Caps. Prior to graduation, Mortar Boards may not be worn indoors; however they may be worn outdoors. Soft caps may be worn both indoors and out. So in both cases it’s very important that they fit correctly, along with the gowns which should be the correct length. Our staff will ensure this is the case and any issues we will be pleased to answer and try and address.
