W hy would you want to speak to me?” teases Kamala Sukosol as she takes a break from her photoshoot to greet me in one of the grand art deco atriums that are a feature of The Siam Hotel in Bangkok. “I’m only a grandmother,” she laughs,

before gliding regally away to resume her position on the chaise longue for a fi nal round of shots.

That 72-year-old Kamala is a beloved fi gure for her family’s youngest generation is beyond debate — she talks animatedly of just having taken her grandchildren to see the latest Transformers movie. However, it is not her love of kid-centric outings that makes her compelling, but her maverick personality and status as one of the most dynamic businesswomen Thailand has ever produced.

Since being drafted — albeit somewhat reluctantly — by her father Kamol into the Sukosol family business in the early 1970s when he asked her to oversee the development of its fi rst hotel, the Siam Bayshore, in the coastal city of Pattaya, she has helped establish the group as one of Thailand’s strongest independent hospitality brands. Sukosol Hotels now counts fi ve properties in its portfolio: The Bayview, the Siam Bayshore and the Wave in Pattaya and The Sukosol and The Siam in Bangkok.

And all are highly regarded, especially The Siam — the luminous jewel in the Sukosol Hotels crown — which has been garlanded with awards from the travel press since opening back in 2011. The hotel, which was the brainchild of Kamala’s youngest son Krissada
