In The Spotlight – The Math Department

The Math Department continues to work hard individually, as collaborative learning teams, and as a department to make math

accessible and to help our students succeed. We have a particular focus of ensuring that students are able to apply mathematical

concepts and understand meaningful mathematical relationships. We do this across the curriculum and specifically with our One to

the World/Project Based Learning Projects. Our teachers have come up with some great projects including the city designer project,

conic sections in the community, optimization of the containers you use, trigonometric regression in the real world, and quarterback

comparison using statistics and modeling. You can see examples of these on the Math page of the website.

Computer Science Highlights: The AP Computer Science classes continue to benefit from Adam Leff and Brett Schoppert --

volunteers with the TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools www.tealsk12.org) program. They are professional

software developers who volunteer in the classroom two or three times each week to mentor students and provide practical applications

to the programming concepts taught in class.

Students in both Computer Math and AP Computer Science recently went on a field trip to iFly, an indoor skydiving simulator.

Students learned about the engineering and design of the building, which helps skydivers stay afloat inside a wind tunnel. They made

connections to computer science as they learned how many models and simulations were needed to occur before the building and wind

tunnel could even be constructed. Computer Science students are planning another field trip to Escape Room Ashburn to experience

problem solving, puzzles, and team building. The owner of Escape Room Ashburn, Ali Ibrahim, has a Computer Science degree and

will give the students a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and explain how he applied computer science concepts when he created

the puzzles and challenges in each room.

December 4 – 8 is Computer Science week and there is a worldwide effort to convince everyone to participate in the Hour of

Code. A handful of Stone Bridge students will go to Belmont Station and Cedar Lane Elementaries to assist the teachers and students

participating in the Hour of Code.

Programming & Robotics Club Highlights: In their first competition of the season, the VEX Robotics team finished in second

place. They have two more competitions scheduled in December and January. Any team alliance that wins a competition automatically

advances to the State competition. An alliance consists of three teams. The club has three cyber security teams competing in this

year’s CyberPatriot national competition, where teams attempt to secure various Windows and Ubuntu operating systems. All three

teams had strong performances in the first round. The second round of the competition is in December. Girls Who Code are learning

the basics of programming and are planning to develop a Virtual Reality app that simulates environmental issues. The Programming

& Robotics Club meets Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 pm in L406. The club’s sponsors are Mrs. Bond and Mr. Poland.

Mu Alpha Theta: Mu Alpha Theta is the national Mathematics honor society. SBHS has approximately 90 members who volunteer

as peer tutors in the mornings before school. They are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:30 – 9 AM in

room L400. Mrs. Adams and Ms. Linsley are this year’s sponsors.

Best wishes to Mr. Ausel as he takes on a new position in LCPS. We will miss him!

We hope that everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable winter break.

Minute of Silence Virginia Law requires schools to start the day

with a ‘minute of silence’. The law allows for different

uses of the minute so that “each pupil may, in the exercise

of his or her individual choice, meditate, pray, or engage

in any other silent activity which does not interfere with,

distract, or impede other pupils in the exercise of their

individual choice.” The law also specifies “all pupils

remain seated and silent and make no distracting

display…” We begin our announcements with the

following statement, “As we begin another day, let us

pause for a minute of silence.” Following the minute of

silence, we conclude with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Please discuss this law with your students and help them

understand that the expectation is for students to remain

quiet.

Change of Address You must provide a form and proof of residency

to the Counseling Office. The Change of Address form

is located on the website under the Counseling Office.

This form and proof of residency must be submitted as

soon as possible. Proof of residency consists of a signed

lease, deed, settlement papers, mortgage statement or

deed of trust and a current utility bill.

Updates to Phone/Email Contacts

Please submit the update request online through

ParentVue. Once the request has been submitted, school staff will review it before updating the record.

Bell Schedule

Regular, Advisory Day, 1-Hour and 2-Hour

Delay bell schedules are listed on a full page towards the

end of this newsletter. Please refer to this should LCPS

adjust the school day due to weather.

Food Deliveries to School

Students may not order restaurant delivery. If

parents deliver lunch, please avoid drinks in paper cups.

The risk of a spill in the front office is too great!

Parking Lot Information Student Drop Off/Pick Up – For everyone’s

safety, we ask that you drop students off and pick them

up only in the front parking lot. Please do not drop

students off in the back of the school, as this area is not

designed for that purpose.

Extended parking is not permitted in the bus

loop at any time before or after the school day.

According to the Fire Marshall, the Bus Loop is

considered a roadway and parking is not

allowed. Exemptions are buses and emergency vehicles.

Visitors should park in designated visitor spaces

only. Student lot spaces belong to students who have

paid for those spaces.

Please do not park in the surrounding

neighborhoods. Towing is a very possible consequence.

Parking Permits All applications must have complete car

information, parent signature, and payment via cash or

check at the time of submission. Online payments must

also have an application turned in to the front office. The

fee for a parking permit is $200.00 for the school year or

$100.00 per semester. Parking fees are not prorated. A

few daily passes are available for a small fee per day.

Again this year, specific parking spaces will not

be assigned. Parking is on a first come/first served basis

within the student lot each day. This worked very well

last year as it eliminated problems that occur when

students park in incorrect spaces, or when snow buries

some spaces for days.

Parking is a privilege and students must remain

in good standing to remain eligible to drive to school.

Notes from the Bookkeeper A $10 fee is assessed for returned checks.

and stay safe. The party is held at school graduation night

from 11:30pm – 5:00am and is attended by close to 80%

of the graduating class. There are games, raffles, prizes

and even a casino! Feedback from seniors has

consistently described the party as one of the best times

they’ve ever had at SBHS!

We need Freshman, Sophomore and Junior

parents to help with the planning. To make the party a

success, the committee meets monthly throughout the

year to plan fresh ideas for each graduating class. We are

in search of folks to serve on committees, help with

fundraising, volunteer for set-up, chaperoning, and clean

up after the party. See the website for more information.

PTSO Who are we?

Stone Bridge High School Parent-Teacher-Student

Organization (SBHS PTSO), a 501 (3)(c), is the

supportive arm of the SBHS Administration. It is made up

of volunteers.

What does the PTSO do?

We coordinate many events including an Orientation Picnic

for students, various teacher gifts including the beginning of

school, a cookie exchange in December, Valentine’s Day

treats, Staff Appreciation Week luncheon and fundraisers.

100% of the funds we raise through dues and fundraisers

support the students and staff at Stone Bridge, and are

returned to the students in programs such as Senior

Scholarships and school improvements. So far this year we

have contributed money to the library to purchase books for

the Bulldog Readers Book Club; donated funds to the

Robotics Club and assisted them in obtaining funds and

materials from local businesses and parents; donated funds

to the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Team,

The Sunshine Committee and the ID/MD Program to help

them start up a coffee cart business.

How do I get involved?

The first thing is to become a member! Your dues and

donations help support these programs. Log onto

https://www.lcps.org/Page/191441 for the parent

membership form. You can pay by check or on Paypal.

We still have some positions to fill if you would like to help.

We are looking for a Communications Chair, as well as a

representative to attend LEAP Meetings (Loudoun

Education Alliance of Parents).

Meeting:

We usually meet on the first Tuesday at 6:30 in the library.

Our next meeting will be December 5. Please join us!

Upcoming Events

- We are excited to treat the SBHS staff on December 14th

with a “Make Your Holiday Sweet” treat party. Parents

are asked to bake or buy cookies, muffins or other treats.

Staff members come during their lunch break and grab a

snack to eat now and to fill a small bag to take with them.

We can’t do this without a lot of help from our parents!

We need bakers as well as help with set-up and clean-up.

Let us know if you can pitch in! Sign up at

[email protected].

Library News Hours: 8 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. Mon. – Thurs.

8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Fridays during the school year.

December fun – This month students can stop in for

some winter fun. We have our “When Will Wayde Call”

Snow Day contest, our makerspace with some winter

themed projects, and some “reindeer games” available

for students to take a stress break from academics.

Bulldog Readers – students interested in reading and

discussing books with their peers are invited to join the

Bulldog Readers on the last Wednesday of each month.

The January meeting will be on the 31st and students will

discuss either Invictus by Ryan Graudin or Forest of a

Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao. Students can pick up

a copy in the library. This is not the same club as Battle

of the Books.

Your trash is our treasure – If you have any of the

following items to donate, the library would love to have

them for projects, library updates, and fundraisers:

• used fiction books

• café height tables and chairs

• used flat screen television

• hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, nuts

and bolts

• art supplies such as paint brushes and tarps

Are you an Eagle Scout in search of a project? We

have some ideas for projects that would enhance the

learning environment for our students. If you are a

current or soon-to-be Eagle Scout and are looking for a

project, please contact us.

Homegrown Heroes

The front hall of the school showcases a mural

dedicated to our SBHS Homegrown Heroes. Plaques on

this wall list the names of alumni who serve in the

military or teach in the Loudoun County Public School

system. If you know of someone whose name does not

appear, please let us know!

The Flea Market (aka: School Store) Home of official

Bulldog clothing, spirit

items, school supplies and

much more! Located in

Room 401 and open daily

during the school year from

8:40am-9:10am or by

appointment at 571-252-

2200 (ext: 82032).

During some sporting events,

the Spirit Wear trailer sells other Stone Bridge gear.

The Writing Center

This is the third year of operations of the

Bulldog Writing Center, an elective class whose mission

is to collaborate with fellow students to develop great

writers at Stone Bridge. In collaboration with the English

Department faculty, students visit the Center during their

lunches on “B” days and work with trained student tutors

to draft, revise, and polish essays. Senior and Junior-class

Tutors, selected by the English faculty, completed a

rigorous “Boot Camp” devoted to review of grammar,

mechanics, and common modes of writing. Upon

completion of the Camp, the Center opened in early

October. Results to date have been record setting. Our

sixteen tutors tripled last year’s 1st Quarter results,

conducting over 300 sessions with fellow students who

sought assistance on a broad scope of writing

assignments and college essays. In early December, the Writing Center staff will

attend the Capital Area Peer Tutoring Association

(CAPTA) conference at GMU. Two Bulldogs, Tara

Soltani and Laura Tutko, whose proposal to deliver a

presentation was accepted last Spring, are on the

conference program. Only one other Loudoun County

Sports Programs Stone Bridge is a member of the Virginia High

School League (VHSL), Potomac District Conference 14

and Region 5C North. The Potomac District includes

Tuscarora, Potomac Falls, Broad Run, Briar Woods, John

Champe, Freedom, Rock Ridge, and Stone Bridge.

Eligibility • For participation this year, students must pass a

sports physical given after May 1, 2017. VHSL

Physical Forms are available online or in the office.

• Students in grades 10 through 12 for this year (or

who were in high school this past year) must have

been enrolled in at least 5 subjects and must have

passed at least 5 subjects. Summer school can count

toward the 5 subjects. Note: A subject for which

credit has previously been granted may not be

repeated, or be used by any student to satisfy the

requirement of the rule.

• Students entering high school for the first time will

be eligible.

• After 9th grade, students must not have been enrolled

in or been eligible for enrollment in high school for

eight consecutive semesters.

• Athletes who arrive after 9:15am must have a

doctor, dental, or court appointment notice to

participate in practice or games after school.

Forms Needed Prior to Tryouts We have moved to an online registration process. The

only paper document you will submit is the VHSL

physical form. The completed VHSL physical form will

need to be turned in to the Athletic Office after the

physical is obtained (this must be after May 1, 2017). All

other paperwork should be completed on the Stone Bridge

Sports Registration page. You will first need to create a

family account, then you can register each of your student-

athletes by sport. If your student-athlete participates in

multiple sports, you will just need to update the paperwork

online before each tryout date. The forms include:

• Completed VHSL Physical Form

• Signed Training Rules

• Signed Concussion Form

• Warning and Acknowledgement of Risk Form

• Emergency Card

• All paperwork must be complete prior to

tryouts.

Athletic Boosters The Athletic Booster Club supports initiatives that

provide our student athletes, athletic department, school, and community opportunities to remain competitive. We

• provided almost $23,000 to the coaching staffs last year in coaches requests alone;

• provided $10,000 to refurbish the weight room; • provided over $6,500 to the fall teams this year,

including uniforms and warm-ups for our newest team, Field Hockey;

• supports and organizes fundraisers for each season to help teams raise money for their sport;

We are a not-for-profit organization, operated solely by volunteers, and we provide more support to the school (labor and finances) than any other program in Loudoun County. Those who volunteer in the concession stands and ticket offices “earn” $10 per 2-hour shift for the team of their choice. This money goes directly to the coach, who can use it for program related expenseS. Sign up for shifts on the Boosters page at www.stonebridgesports.org

We are currently in need of a Board Secretary to finish out the term through June 2018. Please email the Board President at [email protected]

We invite you to join the Athletic Booster Club; annual family memberships start at $25. To join, go to http://www.stonebridgehs.rschoolteams.com/page/3065

Attendance Policies 2017-2018 All absences and tardies must be called in to

the attendance hotline: 571-252-2202. This is a 24-hour

line that takes messages only. Please call each and every

time your student(s) will be out of school or tardy.

Excused Absences: Excused absences include

personal illness, death in family, medical or dental

appointments, court obligations, and religious holidays.

Prearranged Absences: Must be approved by the

administration (ex: college visits or family vacations).

Forms can be picked up from the attendance office.

Early Dismissals: Please send in a note with your

student prior to the dismissal time. The student should

take this to the attendance window to receive a pass to

leave class at the approved time.

• Parents are expected to call if a student is going

to be absent or tardy to school. The number for

the hotline is 571-252-2202.

• The attendance office will call parents to verify

absences, tardies, and early dismissals.

• When students accumulate five unexcused

absences during the school year, a parent

conference will be held.

• When students are absent from school six

unexcused days, the students will be required to

submit a doctor’s note for additional absences for

the remainder of the school year.

• When students are absent from school seven or

more unexcused days, the parent and student will

be referred to the Truancy Officer.

schedule doctor appointments for their ISR dates.

Students scheduled in ISR are not allowed to participate in

any extracurricular activities until the day after they are

released from ISR.

Tardy Policy to School: Students are expected to be on

administrative options, loss of parking permit.

Early Dismissals: Early dismissals will be granted in the

event that a student must leave school to go on a verified

doctor, dental, or other medical, counseling or court

appointment. A note from home is required stating why

the student must leave school, what time the student needs

to leave, and a telephone number for the parent approving

the dismissal. The student’s name, grade, and student ID

should also be clearly stated on the note.

Calls will be made to verify all notes. If your

child has an on-going medical condition which will

require frequent dismissals from school, please call your

student’s counselor and/or contact

Mrs. King in the attendance office.

Frequent dismissals without a

medical explanation will be under

review by the attendance office and

Guarding Against The Flu The flu vaccine is available at pharmacies,

military clinics, the Health Department or from your

doctor. Remember that it can take up to 2 weeks for the flu

vaccine to become effective. According to the CDC, flu

activity is normally low, but outbreaks of flu can happen

as early as October.

Take 3 steps to protect yourself against the flu.

1. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the best way

to protect against flu.

2. Everyday preventative actions like covering your

cough, staying away from people who are sick and

washing your hands often can help prevent the spread of

respiratory viruses like the flu.

3. See your doctor within 48hrs.of flu onset. Influenza

antiviral medications are an important second line of

defense against the flu.

Medication Drop Off Parents, the clinic is a very busy place within our

school. If you need to keep medication in the clinic, or if

you need to speak with the health center regarding your

student’s health care needs during the school day, please

call to make an appointment at 571-252-2215.

Please remember that all medication must be

brought to the clinic by the parent in its original container.

ALL prescribed medications must have the Authorization

for Medication form completed by the prescribing

provider and signed by the parent. For more information

regarding medications, Allergy Action Plans, Asthma

Action Plans and other forms needed, go to the website

LCPS.org, click under the Parents tab, select Medication

at School, scroll down to Health Forms for Medical

Needs.

Clinic Information • The clinic’s direct line is (571) 252-2215

• If your student has any significant medical needs, please

notify the nurse even if the school has been notified in

previous school years. If your child has diabetes,

seizures, life-threatening allergies, asthma or uses an

inhaler, you should pick up forms for you and your

physician to complete so the school can understand and

address your student’s needs.

• A parent or guardian must deliver any medication

(prescription or non-prescription) to the school office

or clinic. Students should not transport any

medication to or from school. Parents are responsible

for picking up unused medication. If a student

mistakenly brings medication, he should turn it in to the

clinic immediately.

• The nurse must have written instructions from the

physician in order to administer prescription

medication.

These instructions should include:

• Student’s name.

• Name and purpose of the medication.

• Dosage and time of administration.

• Possible side effects and measures to take if they

should occur.

• End date for administering the medication.

• Parent signature giving permission to administer

medicine and to contact student’s Physician.

• Physician’s signature.

• A copy of the special “Medication Form” that should be

used appears later in this newsletter.

• All prescription medicine must be in the original

pharmacy bottle with the proper label containing the

name of the student, dosage, and instructions for

administration. If you ask, the pharmacy will give you

an extra bottle with the proper amount of medication for

school.

• If the nurse needs to give non-prescription medication, it

must be in original packaging with the name of the

medicine and instructions.

• The nurse must have a note from the parent regarding

when and how much medicine to administer.

• The nurse will only give the amount listed on the

package for your student’s age and weight and for the

recommended length of time, the student should receive

the medicine unless she has doctor’s orders on a

medication form that indicates otherwise.

• The nurse cannot administer medicine that is not in its

original container.

• Students who have fevers should be kept at home until

free of fever for 24 hours.

• All 10th graders and students new to Loudoun County

Public Schools will be screened for vision and hearing

during the first two months of school. Parents will be

notified of any concerns.

Be sure to keep the “Emergency Information” up-to-date

so that we can reach you if your student is ill or injured.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the only medication

supplied by the school. The nurse must have written parental

permission in order to administer this medication. Please be

sure that the Tylenol permission information on the

emergency card is complete and that your signature is on the

form. Because Acetaminophen, in large amounts, over a

period of time, can cause liver damage, the nurse will give

only 4 doses in a 4 week period. Before a fifth dose is given,

the parent will be contacted.
