THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGNGayle Evans, Capital Campaign Coordinator

Our Capital Campaign fundraising continues to go well and our focus is now on "The

World Heritage Visitors Centre Endowment Fund" to fund the Centre's opera-

tions and "Phase 2 Restorations of The World Heritage Visitors Centre" to fund

the interior design of the Centre. We would like to thank all those who have donated

to date. Your support is greatly appreciated.

On Friday 2nd December we teamed up with The Bermuda National Trust for their

annual Walkabout in St. George's. The World Heritage Visitors Centre became the

primary starting point for the evening's activities along with the popular snacks and

beverages offered by the National Trust and their maps showing those activities tak-

ing place in the Town that evening.

Once again, we received positive feedback from the many people who had not

previously had the opportunity to view the Centre. We estimate some 2500 people

came through the Centre that evening!

If you have not seen the Centre for yourself why not give us a call on 297-3370

the next time you are in St. George's and I will gladly show you around.

The Centre is also available for rent for private functions such as weddings and

business receptions. If you are interested in receiving further details please

e-mail me at [email protected].

THE FRIEND’S OF ST. PETER’SThanks to the efforts of

the Reverend W. David

Raths and the Vestry of St

Peter's, "The Friends of

St Peters" was established

under the patronage of His

Royal Highness the Duke of York, KVCO, ADC to

support the preservation and promotion of

St Peter's Church in the Town of St. George.

The launching of "The Friends of St Peter's" will

take place at 6pm on 24th February 2006 with

a commemoration service for Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale USN, the last casu-

alty of the war of 1812, with a brief service at his grave in St. Peter's Graveyard. All

are welcome to join us and further announcements will appear in The Royal Gazette

in due course.

A reception and dinner will follow at The World Heritage Visitors Centre on Penno's

Wharf. The Guest Speaker will be Dr. Edward Harris, of the Bermuda Maritime

Museum.

The cost is $75.00 per person

and anyone wishing to

attend should call

St Peter's Church Office

on 297-2459 or e-mail

OH...WHAT A DAY!

FUNDAY SUNDAY, November 5, 2005

Barbara Holmes Simon, Event Coordinator

If you missed it – you missed a really good time. A really special family day. What fun we had.

It was a beautiful day weatherwise and a great day all around. An estimated 2,500 people

came to St. George's to see their World Heritage Visitors Centre and to have fun!

Train rides, a glass bottom boat ride, a sandwich making competition, story reading, raffles, a

Guy Fawkes creation contest, face-painting, performances by Dottie the Clown, even Mr. Guy

Fawkes was enjoying the sunshine! We showed our film "A Stroll Through St. George's", the

kids loved the Fun Castle, we served delicious soup, sandwiches and popcorn, etc. etc. All of

it was enjoyed by those that turned out. We ended the day with a bonfire and a burning of a

Guy Fawkes effigy. A great end to a Bermudaful Day!

Numerous prizes and raffles were donated and we are grateful to the corporate community

for their overwhelming generosity.

Sincere thanks are extended to the event organizing committee and all

the volunteers who worked tirelessly – especially during the day on

Funday Sunday.

And...we are going to do it all over again on November 6th, 2006

NEWS FROM THE Education OfficerLeondra Burchall, Education Officer

Days into the Education Officer post I was conducting research and com-

piling questions for the first annual Heritage Hunt. The Heritage Hunt

is the collaborative effort of the Annual Exhibition, The St. George’s

Foundation and Look Bermuda. It is an intellectual and physical scavenger

hunt featuring an interactive map. The Hunt is open to all Bermuda

schools and covers all nine parishes.

The Heritage Hunt, along with The St. George’s Foundation, was featured

in the Ministry of the Environment’s Annual Exhibition newsletter distrib-

uted to schools island-wide and our collaborative team conducted teacher

workshops for all participating schools. I am pleased to announce twelve

schools are registered for this project designed to increase knowledge of

Bermuda’s heritage and culture.

I ask that all St. George’s Foundation members attend the Annual

Exhibition and look for the interactive map featuring the participating

schools and all the Hunt questions and answers. Also, be sure to pick up

a catalog where we have a full-page feature on page 4.

Once the questions and graphics were compiled I set out for a weeklong

conference in Providence, Rhode Island. I attended the Oral History

Association Annual Meeting where I focused on workshops and presenta-

tions relating to oral history in the classroom and digital technology as I

was set to give a workshop at the Bermuda Union of Teacher’s Annual

EDUCATION UPDATE

Conference on the subject. I wanted to provide Bermuda’s teachers the

most current information regarding materials, digital technology and oral

history.

Both the conference, and the BUT workshop held November 8, 2005

at CedarBridge Academy, were a success. I, along with Jennifer Hind of

Newspapers in Education, conducted the workshop on oral history in the

classroom. I provided basic instruction and guidelines while Jennifer

provided a vehicle for the oral testimony in the Royal Gazette’s Milestone

of a Millenium Series which features stories written by middle and high

school students on a Bermudian or a significant aspect of Bermudian his-

tory. Teachers were asked that classes participate in the Milestones essay

competition and to encourage students to use oral history in their submis-

sion. The deadline is just prior to Easter term break.

Temporarily off the workshop circuit I was embroiled in discussions for a

children’s exhibit in the World Heritage Visitor’s Centre. Advocates for

Bermuda’s Children (ABC) have donated funds for a children’s exhibit. I,

along with Sharon Jacobs, Paul Shapiro of Brimstone Media, and Conchita

Ming of ABC met to discuss options. Currently research is underway and

we are scheduled to meet in February.

As you can see much has taken place since my appointment and I am con-

tinuing to ingratiate myself in the community of education officers, histor-

ical agencies, our partners, and with the Town and people of St. George’s

through both formal meetings and informal gatherings. The wonderful

publicity on my appointment has generated considerable interest and sup-

port as this month I was asked to participate in a meeting of non-govern-

mental education officers (NGO’s) to discuss how we can better reach

and deliver materials to teachers, for input on the East End Community

Education and Development Programme’s tour guide course, and to con-

duct an oral history workshop for middle school teachers in March.

Meetings are being planned, projects are developing and ‘history is com-ing to life in St. George’s.’ Stay tuned....much more is to come.
