November 2006 www.cowtownmopars.com

HEY COWTOWN MOPAR MEMBERS! October is over now and it was very busy. We did well at the Redline race. The Ennis race was cancelled because of rain and rescheduled for Nov. 4th. The Lone Star shootout was delayed some because of rain, but when they got underway the Cowtown Racers were well represented as always. Mike Miller will have the race and show results soon and will post them on the web site. In a few days we go to Kennedale for the next to last race of the year. Remember I set a lofty goal for us of 1000 points this year and WE can do it. I predict that WE WILL get more than 1000 points this year. Another first in the TMCCC, but we need your help, it is not to late. See ya at the track! In November instead of having our normal cruise night we would like to see as many club members as would like to go join the race team at the TMCCC banquet. It will be held at Texas Star Conference Center, 7:00pm, $11.00 a person and we will have BBQ. With the banquet on the second weekend we have moved the last cruise night of the year to the third weekend. We will meet at Bill Boon's, November 18th, 5:00pm, bring your favorite chili and stuff to go with it. The club will provide the drinks and stuff to eat with. A Cowtown Mopar Chili cook off, sounds cool!! We will have a grill there to warm up your chili if needed. Everyone will be expected to be at the November club meeting the next day too show you survived the assortment of chili digested. I will bring a sample race shirt to the November meeting. In December we will have our annual Toy Drive to benefit the Salvation Army. It will be at Huffines again this year, December 9th, 9:00am to 3:00pm. After the toy drive we will convoy to the Salvation Army with all the goodies we collect. We will also have an open car show with the entry being a toy. Be sure and tell all your non-Mopar buddies to join us at the toy drive and bring their old cars! For our December Club meeting we will have our annual Christmas Party with gift exchange. The club will pay $5 and you will pay $5 and we will eat a great meal provided by Billy Bob's. Then we will have the gift exchange. It is always a lot of fun to see gifts get stolen time and time again. Try and keep the price of your gift around $15. Hope to see you there! The latest update on the car show for next year is WE HAVE THE RAFFLE TICKETS. They are $5 each and I hope everyone buys a fist full. It is for a GREAT cause and we want to show the Charitable Heart of Cowtown Mopars! The other news is we need a couple of tier one sponsors($1500 to $2500). All the money will be directly added to the donation we will make the day of the show. Contact me or an-other board member if you or someone you know can help us out with a show spon-sorship. See ya soon! Beep!Beep! Mark Buchanan Cowtown Mopars President

From the Vice President

We will have a very special guest at our meeting in November. No, he isn't a real famous person or anything. But how many club members have their car selected to be a feature in a magazine. Better yet, how many have had to earn that chance? Randy Gunter really likes his Dart Sport. He saw that the Lone Star Shootout was having a street car shootout and de-cided to send his info and pics of his car in to see what happens. They were only going to select 8 cars from all of the entries so it would be a long shot. After several weeks of waiting he finally got the call he had been waiting for. His car had been selected for the shootout. Now all he had to do was clean the car, wax it, polish it, vacuum it out, polish some more. Make it really shine. He even had the bumpers re-plated. To give you a little history on the car, he had purchased it from a dealer that sold muscle cars. After the purchase he found out the car was a local car and in fact had belonged to a previous Cowtown Mopars member. He wanted to make the car a lot faster than it was so he had the motor rebuilt into a 408 stroker, the automatic overdrive trans that was in the car removed and a 727 put in it's place. He also had subframe connectors and ladder bars installed. He had a mis-sion. He wanted a fast Mopar and one that looked good doing it. He made the long journey down to Houston for the Lone Star Shootout. Remember all that waxing and polishing? It rained. Randy didn't whine, he just wiped the water off and took it to the show area for judging. He was up against some real tough competition too. Not sure how his car had done in the car show portion of the event he deep down inside felt confident about the performance side of things. Round one. No doubt about the way this car runs. No one was any closer than a half second. Round two...... Randy ran a blistering 11.41 to show what this car was made of. Pure Mopar Muscle. Next on the agenda was to sit and wait for the results. Later in the day on sunday, a photographer from Mopar Action came over and had Randy take his car to a large field for a photo shoot. "Did I win?" he asked the photographer. "I don't know. I was just told to shoot your car and have you fill this questionaire out". Was this a sign? Still sitting around waiting. Not a word. He went to the tower to ask. Phone calls were made, no one seemed to know. A few minutes later the promoter talked to someone else. "Who won the Mopar Action Shootout? OK..... OK.... Are you Randy Gunter?" Yup, that was him! Finally an an-swer. He had won the thing. After a year of work and a lot of blood sweat and tears, he did what he set out to do. He has a fast AND good looking Mopar. And he will have his 15 minutes of fame to boot! Great job Randy. A well deserved honor to a deserving club member. CMPT Club Information

From The Staging Lanes From The Staging Lanes October was a very busy race month. We had an excellent turn out at Redline and a long day of racing. We had to finish the Denton Slip`N’Slide Nationals and run a regular program also. We had several racers do well in each program Redline results Paul Brown-------Winner King muscle Mark Buchanan---Runner up Super muscle Kelly Hilla---------Semifinalist Street muscle Tommy Reynolds--Winner Stock muscle Denton Pro and Electronics results Gary Mitchell-----Semifinalist Electronics Tony Malone-----Winner Pro muscle Mike Miller-------Runner up Pro muscle Aaron Boon------Semifinalist Pro muscle The Ennis race was rescheduled due to rain so I will cover Kennedale and Ennis in December. Cowtown Mopars was well represented at the Lone Star Shootout in Houston. We had an excellent caravan down to Houston, we were able keep our group together all the way down. Several of us ran the Friday test and tune to acquaint ourselves with the track. We all watched the rain on Saturday. However late in the day they got the track dry enough to give everyone a test run. Sunday was much better with the air around 100ft above sea level most of the day. In NSS Frank Smith and Marty Robertson went out in the first round. In NMC Rick Marino went out first round and Mike Miller went out in the second round on a red light. I believe Kim Humphries went to the Semis in Super Pro. In Pro I went out in the second round due to napping at the line. Last and not at all least King Willie won the Truck class A job well done goes out to Willie. We did a carb transplant on his rig late Saturday. The carb swap seems to have given his truck the consistency needed to win. I believe he ran with in a few hundredths of his dial in all day. I hope to see all our racers at the Toy Drive and the Christmas Party Bryan Carpenter, Race Team Coordinator

This is the time of the year where one can look back and reflect the sum-mer of 2006....Yep… it was a hot one...pretty dry too. But the car shows, cruise nights, and racing program still went forward in spite of the heat. Car shows started in January with indoor competi-tion, February went the same direction, and finally March opened up the great outdoors in Shreveport at the famous American Rose Center. Many local shows were in the swing with Sonic, Fabulous 50's, Christian Classic Cruis-ers, and others hosting events that would have many CMPT members col-lecting trophies. The CMPT race team has been a dominate factor for 2006. In fact, the CMPT Race Team has been the dominate club in the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge for the past five years and will be five time winners as of 2006. One might say this has been a ban-ner year for the club. As the holiday fes-tivities approach, we still have a few events left for the year's end. Our No-vember cruise night, the annual toy drive and car show, annual Christmas Party, and next year's huge car show in April is just a quick list. Our website master Mike Miller keeps an accurate account on upcoming events and last minute changes and updates. Refer to the website often, it's your website. With 2006 coming to a close, Happy Holidays to all. Ken Angyal, CMPT Secretary

Car of the Month — November 2006 Bob Graham’s 1970 Plymouth Duster

This lemon-twist yellow Duster is a factory 340, 4-speed car. I restored it in 1997, and showed it in numerous events across Texas in 1998 and 1999. When I sold it, I had no idea that I would buy it back again 5 years later. Here are some highlights about the history of the car. Mike Connor originally purchased this car at Worthy Chrysler Plymouth in Fort Worth, in 1970. Mike moved to Virginia in 1997 and took the Duster with him. A mutual friend of ours told me about the car. After a couple of long-distance conversations, I arranged to buy it. Two friends and I headed to Virginia to seal the deal and trailer the Duster home. We com-pleted a 1250-mile trip in 53 hours, during the 4th of July weekend. I completed restorations dur-ing the winter of 1997, and the Duster made its debut at the 1998 Fort Worth Rod and Custom Car show. I showed the car in many events in 1998 and 1999. Then, I sold the Duster at the Houston Raceway Mopar Show, in October 1999. The buyer kept it for a few months, and sold it to a man living in Jacksonville, Texas. In September 2004, I went to the Mopar Mini-Nationals in Dallas and found the Duster “For Sale” once again. The car was still in the same excellent condition as it was when I had sold it. I knew that I couldn’t walk away from it a second time. So, our old friend made a full circle across Texas and came back to Fort Worth. Many Thanks! Bob
