National Youth Jazz OrchestraThe National Youth Jazz Orchestra is one ofBritain’s longest-running ensembles for youngpeople under 25 playing big-band jazz. Nowcelebrating 50 years of existence NYJO featuressome of the best, most gifted and talented of thenext generation of UK jazz musicians and willbe performing a concert at Stafford GatehouseTheatre this May.

NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase forthe country’s best young musicians. Since NYJO’sfounding, by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of thecurrent generation of top British jazz musicians haverisen through its ranks, often becoming establishedjazz stars whilst still playing with the band. Oneof NYJO’s aims is to share the talents of excitingyoung players with as wide a potential audience aspossible.

Classics from the big band canon sit alongside

specially commissioned new arrangements by bandmembers and leading contemporary UKcomposers. From hard-swinging rhythm section toa raft of hugely talented young soloists, this is a bigband in fine form.

NYJO features 23 musicians and vocalists fromaround the country, most of whom go on to becomeprofessional musicians. Beth England, aged 13, and a Year8 student at Walton High Schoolstarted Kickboxing in November2013 and competed for the firsttime in November 2014.

In her first competition, Beth took asilver medal and was spotted by LeeMatthews, owner of Lee MatthewsBritish Military Martial Arts. Leeacknowledged Beth’s potential andwas very impressed with her ability.

He suggested to Beths Sensei, Tony Anderton, owner ofRugeley Martial Arts and Fitness Centre, to put her onhis competition squad, Team SAS. This gave Bethpartial Sponsorship (which covers one free trainingsession per week and her training kit). She received herplace on the squad at the Christmas Kickboxing AwardsEvening.

Since November Beth has gone on to fight at theWatford Open in January, where there were fightersfrom all over the world, fighting one of the HungarianNational Team. She also competed in The Gold Rushleague in Manchester in February where she tookBronze and Telford interclub where she took two silverand one bronze.

Beth’s latest achievement was being awarded a Silverin the intermediate category for 16 years and under andGold in her Novice category. Beth is also competing inEdinburgh the first weekend in May.

Beth alongside her fellow Team SAS members will beattending trials for the England Squad competing inthe 2015 World Martial Kombat Federation (WMKF)World Championships to be held in Malta in November,with the view of making the team and representingtheir country on the world stage. Some of which will bedefending their current world titlesattained in Tunisia during 2014.

Stafford based KatharineHouse Hospice is urging localpeople and businesses to helpsupport its vital work in thecommunity by sponsoring anhour of nursing care at theHospice.

The Hospice is calling on localpeople to sponsor an hour ormore of a nurses’ time in thecare of local people at KatharineHouse Hospice. The Hospiceexists largely because of thesupport of local people – theSponsor a Nurse appeal is oneexample of how people can helpthe Hospice.

The face of this year’s appealis Advanced Nurse PractitionerCathy Browning, of the DayTherapies Unit. Cathy said “Allof the nurses at Katharine HouseHospice are second to none.It’s hard to imagine that theknowledge, care and compassionthat they have could be foundanywhere else. We all strive togive the best possible care to ourpatients and their families,nothing is too much trouble. Allof us will go the extra mile andthe extra special things that wedo for our patients is the norm tous, it’s just part of the day”.

Hospice Head of Fundraising,Sarah Hulson-Beech says “just£15.00 will help nurses provideone hour of care at Katharine

House. Our nurses achieve a lotwithin an hour – helping ourpatients to live their lives to thefull in the time they have left.From symptom relief tosupporting families, our nursesprovide around the clock care, 7days a week in the in-patient unit– and a range of services for daycare patients, carers and families.All of our services are providedcompletely free of charge. Ournurses can only carry on caringbecause of the kindness andgenerosity of local people; weask that our supporters give whatthey can to support the appeal”.
